Hearing By God's Word - EP 50 - Life by the Spirit

from Hearing By God's Word · host Mary Mwakalu

Paul begins this chapter with a strong reminder: Christ has set us free, and we must not return to the bondage of the law (v. 1). He warns that relying on the law—like circumcision—for righteousness nullifies the grace of Christ (vv. 2–6). What truly matters is faith expressing itself through love.He urges believers not to be hindered by false teachings that promote legalism (vv. 7–12) and instead to use their freedom to serve one another humbly in love (v. 13). Paul points out that the entire law is fulfilled in the command to “love your neighbour as yourself” (v. 14).He then contrasts two ways of living:The flesh, which produces destructive behaviours like sexual immorality, jealousy, rage, selfish ambition, and more (vv. 19–21). These lead away from the Kingdom of God.The Spirit, which produces the fruit of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control (vv. 22–23). There is no law against these.Paul concludes by urging believers to crucify the flesh with its passions and desires and to live by the Spirit, staying in step with Him (vv. 24–25). He warns against pride, provocation, and envy (v. 26), which divide the body of Christ.Key Themes:True freedom is found in Christ—not in law or legalism.Love is the fulfilment of the law.Living by the Spirit transforms our character and produces godly fruit. The flesh and Spirit are in conflict; we must choose to walk in the Spirit daily.

The move towards more renewables in our energy systems complicates matters even further, requiring the development of an integrated power grid and continuous and steady transformation of the UK power system. Network flows must be managed reliably under uncertain demands, uncertain supply, emerging network technologies and possible failures and, further, prices in related markets can be highly volatile. Mathematicians working with engineers and economists, can make significant contributions to address such issues, by helping to develop fit-for-purpose models for next generation energy systems. These interdisciplinary approaches are looking to address a range of associated problems, including modelling, prediction, simulation, control, market and mechanism design and optimisation.
