Whales and humans might be worlds apart, but when it comes to how we structure our sounds, we’re surprisingly alike. In a new study, psychologist Inbal Arnon and her team found that humpback whale songs follow a core rule of human language known as Zipf’s law—a statistical pattern that predicts how often we use certain words.
