Starting with their college days, where Yazmin found Tijani loud and obnoxious, attributing it to his extroverted nature, while Tijani believes Yazmin's introverted nature colored her perception. Both grew up poor as first-generation immigrants, Yazmin from Veracruz, Mexico, and Tijani from West Africa, Sierra Leone, later becoming the first in their families to graduate college. Their relationship flourished through college, multiple jobs, and long-distance challenges when Yazmin pursued Teach for America in North Carolina.
