Emma e la madre, giudicate inabili al lavoro nella selezione condotta all’arrivo ad Auschwitz, sono finite subito nella camera a gas; Angelica, un mese prima della fine della guerra, è stata sbranata dai cani per il divertimento delle SS. Solo Fatina è tornata, segnata da ferite profonde : ha assistito alla fine terribile di Angelica ed è stata sottoposta agli esperimenti  criminali del dottor Mengele.Alberto è sopravvissuto a varie selezioni, alla fame, alle torture, all’inverno, alle marce della morte.Dopo essere scampato ad un bombardamento, è stato liberato a Dora, il campo di lavori forzati nella Germania sud-orientale nell’aprile del 1945.
