Too often in schools our teams of educational professionals use subjectivity as a means to make decisions about which supports (if any) we will offer to youth who are struggling with problem behaviors. Using data to make decisions about which youth to support, which supports to offer, and if our supports are being done with fidelity takes all of the guesswork, subjectivity, and emotionality out of the decision making process. Using data is the most effective way to make decisions, and the PBIS framework is already set up to help do this effectively.

The move towards more renewables in our energy systems complicates matters even further, requiring the development of an integrated power grid and continuous and steady transformation of the UK power system. Network flows must be managed reliably under uncertain demands, uncertain supply, emerging network technologies and possible failures and, further, prices in related markets can be highly volatile. Mathematicians working with engineers and economists, can make significant contributions to address such issues, by helping to develop fit-for-purpose models for next generation energy systems.
