Es miembro del Comité Internacional Permanente de Lingüistas de la Unesco y de El Colegio Nacional. Ha dirigido el Diccionario del español usual en México, publicado por El Colegio de México; el Diccionario básico del español de México (1986); y ha publicado Teoría del diccionario monolingüe (1997).
