Rapidly Rotating Records 78 RPM Show – 1 June 2003

from Rapidly Rotating Records

Welcome to Glenn Robison’s Rapidly Rotating Records, bringing you vintage music to which you can’t *not* tap your toes, from rapidly rotating 78 RPM records of the 1920s and ’30s. On this evening’s show, we’ll go down some alleys, have a safety lesson, and celebrate the month of June and the birthday of a state. Enjoy the show! Here’s the complete playlist: Segment 1: Driving SafetyA couple of weeks ago I was involved in a car accident. Fortunately, there were no injuries, and relatively minor damage, but as I went to pull off to the side of the road, the other driver got on the freeway and took off. Of course, mine wasn’t the first traffic accident ever to take place. That happened last week, on May 30 in 1896, when the first automobile accident in the US occurred in New York City. A Duryea Motor Wagon, driven by Henry Wells from Springfield, MA collided with a bicycle ridden by Evylyn Thomas of NYC. So here to commemorate Henry and Evelyn’s collision, are some driving safety tips. The Kerb Step – Jack Hylton AHO Stop, Look and Listen – Tommy Dorsey AHO Stay on the Right Side of the Road – Ray Noble/Al Bowlly Segment 2: AlleysMay 31 marked the birth in 1894 in Cambridge, Massachusetts, of John Florence Sullivan. You may know him as comedian, radio star and satirist Fred Allen. One of the Fred Allen Show’s most popular features was “Allen’s Alley,” in which Allen traded witticisms with regulars. So here to in honor of Fred Allen and “Allen’s Alley” are some songs about alleys Down in Our Alley Blues – Washingtonians In the Alley Blues – Lovie Austin’s Serenaders She Lives Down in Our Alley – Irving Kaufman Segment 3: JuneWell, this being the first show in June, here is a set of rapidly rotating records about June. Give Me a Night in June – Ipana Troubadors I’m Crooning a Tune About June – Sunshine Boys We’ll Be Married in June – Adrian Schubert’s DO / Irving Kaufman Segment 4: WisconsinMay 29 in 1848, the 30th state joined the United States of America. The 30th state is…..OK,I’ll give you a hint. It’s name is the Chippewa Indian word for “grassy place”. That’s right! Wisconsin. Hello, Wisonsin – Eddie Cantor Postage Stomp – Wisconsin U Skyrockets There’s Everything Sweet About You – Wisconsin Roof Orch Segment 5: MarriageMay 29 marked the debut in 1939 on CBS radio of the serial drama “When a Girl Marries”, and played for 18 years. So here to commemorate “When a Girl Marries”, are some songs about marriage. Wedding Bells – Fred Rich AHO / The Rollickers What a Wonderful Wedding That Will Be – Rhythmic Eight Under the Honey Moon – Coney Island Jazz Band THANKS FOR LISTENING!  If you enjoy the show, please let us know by leaving a comment on the website or the Facebook page or sending an email to [email protected] And remember, your requests and topic segments are always welcome.RRR is also available as a podcast on iTunes, Spotify, Stitcher, TuneIn and Google Play Music.
