Once again, for about the 15th time, Rita and I were in Rancho Cordova, California the week-end before Thanksgiving for the 39th Annual West Coast Ragtime Festival, put on thanks to the tireless efforts of many volunteers from the West Coast Ragtime Society. We had a fabulous time as always, seeing old friends, musicians and non, making new friends, listening to wonderful music performed by some of the finest musicians in the world, and enjoying plenty of fine food and drink. A “Ross Turner” Edition of RRR # 1,320 Nov. 2, 2025
Welcome to Glenn Robison’s Rapidly Rotating Records, bringing you vintage music to which you can’t not tap your toes, from rapidly rotating 78 RPM records of the 1920s and ’30s. Do you know who this fellow is? His name is Ross Turner. He’s not a composer, lyricist or instrumentalist, so you may wonder why his photograph is featured on this week’s playlist. Well, Ross was my boss (he hated the term!) for the 25 years I worked at Guided Discoveries until my retirement a few years ago. Ross passed away unexpectedly on October 9 and as my feeble attempt at a tribute and message to the family, the final segment of this week’s show is dedicated to him. If you’re not familiar with Ross and Kristi Turner and Guided Discoveries, after listening to the show I encourage you to find out more about them at the website gdi dot org. In other segments, we’ll hear some records that are just “ducky,” we’ll visit some dance halls, enjoy some musical chocolate and hear about some good girls. There’s lots of great music and interesting information so set aside an hour with your favorite beverage and prepare to be transported back to a different–and we think better–musical era. Just click the link above to listen streaming online and/or download for listening at your convenience. THANKS FOR LISTENING! ENJOY THE SHOW! An “On the Fritz” Edition of RRR # 1,315 September 28, 2025
Welcome to Glenn Robison’s Rapidly Rotating Records, bringing you vintage music to which you can’t not tap your toes, from rapidly rotating 78 RPM records of the 1920s and ’30s. If you play Wordle, you know that one of last week’s words was “fritz.” Many people were upset by that choice because they thought its only meaning was as a proper noun, which Wordle does not use. (Wordle doesn’t use plurals, either, by the way.) In the final segment of this week’s show, you’ll find out where the phrase “on the fritz” likely originated. We also have two birthday salutes this week. One is that of trombonist Joe Harris and you’ll hear three of Joe Harris’ records to start off the show. The other birthday is not of a composer or artist, but of the modern railroad, celebrating its 200th birthday. The drawing above is of George Stephenson’s steam locomotive and cars of the Stockton and Darlington Railway, which opened 200 years ago on September 27, 1825. We’ll also have another episode of “One Thing in Common.” And get out your dancing shoes because we’ll have not one, not two, but three records by the Van Eps Dance Orchestra. Really. For sure this time! A “Hot Stuff ” Edition of RRR # 1,313 Sept. 14, 2025
Hooghuys Fairground Organ c. 1905-1910 Welcome to Glenn Robison’s Rapidly Rotating Records, bringing you vintage music to which you can’t not tap your toes, from rapidly rotating 78 RPM records of the 1920s and ’30s. This is a photograph of a c. 1905-1910 Carousel Organ manufactured by Louis Francois Hooghuys in Belgium. The Hooghuys family built some of the world’s finest classical church organs, beginning in the late 1700s, but Louis Francois decided to branch out and began making barrel organs, and organs for fairground and dance halls. So why is a photograph of a fairground organ featured in the playlist of a show which plays 78 RPM records from the 1920s and ’30s? Well because I wanted to play Old Faithful March by Abe Holzmann, but could only find a couple of cylinder recordings of it which were nowhere near broadcast quality. I did, however, find a recording of the tune played on a 70-Key Hooghuys Fair Organ and you’ll hear it in the second segment of this week’s show which is all about faithfulness. In other segments, we’ll try to identify some things and hear some hot stuff. We’ll also don couple of disguises. A “Numeric” Edition of RRR # 1,298 June 1, 2025
Welcome to Glenn Robison’s Rapidly Rotating Records, bringing you vintage music to which you can’t not tap your toes, from rapidly rotating 78 RPM records of the 1920s and ’30s. Listeners of a certain age==that is to say my age–may recognize this figure as the personification of the famous “bouncing ball.” The bouncing ball is a virtual device used in motion picture films and video recordings to visually indicate the rhythm of a song, helping audiences to sing along with live or prerecorded music. As the song’s lyrics are displayed on the screen in a lower third of projected or character-generated text, an animated ball bounces across the top of the words, landing on each syllable when it is to be sung. The bouncing ball technique was invented by Max Fleischer originally for the “Ko-Ko” Song Car-Tunes (1924–1927) and revised in 1929 as Screen Songs (1929–1938) for Paramount. It was introduced in March 1924 with the film Come Take a Trip in My Airship. So why tell you this? Because in the second segment of this week’s show, we’re going to do some bouncing, introduced by some information about the term “86.” In other segments, we’ll have some songs about the number 5, we’ll go in search of some things, hear from New Orleans Willie Jackson and take a lunch break. Welcome to Glenn Robison’s Rapidly Rotating Records, bringing you vintage music to which you can’t not tap your toes, from rapidly rotating 78 RPM records of the 1920s and ’30s. Do you know who this cartoon character is? Many of my fellow Baby Boomers will recognize him as the evil “Master Cylinder” from Felix The Cat cartoons. But why in the world has he taken over the RRR playlist? Well because the Pathe phonograph company had a recording system unique to the industry which they called the “Master Cylinder.” It allowed the recordings to be dubbed onto various disc and cylinder formats, and in the second segment of this week’s show– celebrating Harry Barth’s birthday–you’ll hear a recording which was issued on both Pathe Sapphire and Needle Cut discs. In other segments we’ll celebrate William H. Tyers’ birthday, we’ll hear three from Billy Fazioli, we’ll take a musical trip to Panama and make a couple of correction. You’ll also hear an acoustical recording from 2022. No, that’s not a typo. There’s lots of great music and interesting information so set aside an hour with your favorite beverage and prepare to be transported back to a different–and we think better–musical era.
