Rapidly Rotating Records 78 RPM Show – 12 November 2000
Welcome to Glenn Robison’s Rapidly Rotating Records, bringing you vintage music to which you can’t *not* tap your toes, from rapidly rotating 78 RPM records of the 1920s and ’30s. On this evening’s show, we’ll have a set of “insightful” songs, and we have three birthdays to commemorate. Enjoy the show! Here’s the complete playlist: Segment 1: MiraculousWilliam Franklin Graham, Jr., better known as Billy Graham was born November 7 in 1918, near Charlotte, NC. In 1934, evangelist Mordecai Fowler Ham began preaching at a series of revival meetings in Charlotte, and stirred up considerable controversy with his charges of moral laxity at the local high school. Graham was led, while listening to Ham’s preaching, to commit to becoming some sort of Christian worker. So we’re starting the show off with a miraculous set of songs Lawd, Lawd – Cecil Scott and His Bright Boys I Believe in Miracles – Fats Waller and His Rhythm Shades of Hades – Hod Williams AHO Temptation Rag – Rhythm Rascals Segment 2: Eyes November 8, in 1895, the first X-ray pictures were taken. Thinking of X-rays reminded me of Superman’s X-ray vision, and the Ray Milland movie, X:The Man with the X-Ray Eyes”, so here are some songs about…eyes. Be Careful with those eyes – Karl Radlach AHO Look in her eyes – Jack Payne and The BBC Dance Orchestra Them There Eyes – Gus Arnheim AHO You Can’t Pull the Wool Over My Eyes – The Swing Rhythm Boys / The Rhythm Rascals Segment 3: Listen To The StarsNovember 9 marked the birth in 1934 of author and astronomer Carl Sagan. Out of the billions and billions of records with songs having to do with stars, I’ve chosen four to share with you this evening. Counting the Stars Alone – California Ramblers Evening Star – Dorsey Bros. Orch / Scrappy Lambert, v. My Lucky Star – Jack Hylton AHO / Sam Browne, v. Star Dust – Irving Mills and His Hotsy Totsy Gang Segment 4: Criminal MusicY esterday marked the birth in 1821 of Fyodor Dostoyevesky, political revolutionary and author of The Brothers Karamazov, The Idiot and other light classics including “Crime and Punishment”. You wouldn’t think that dreaming would be a crime. But I guess it is. Guilty – Ruth Etting Big House Blues – Harlem Footwarmers I Surrender Dear – Sam Lanin’s Dance Ensemble / Paul Small, v. The Penalty of Love – Bubber Miley and His Mileage Makers THANKS FOR LISTENING!
