Just before dawn on August 3 in 1492, Christopher Columbus left Spain with his three ships to sail the ocean blue. And on August 3 in 1880, the American Canoe Association was formed at Lake George, New York. Roosevelt established the Women’s Reserve, known as “Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service” or more commonly by its acronym, the WAVES.
