Rapidly Rotating Records 78 RPM Show – 7 September 2003

from Rapidly Rotating Records

Welcome to Glenn Robison’s Rapidly Rotating Records, bringing you vintage music to which you can’t *not* tap your toes, from rapidly rotating 78 RPM records of the 1920s and ’30s. Usually, the playlist for the show is based on historical events, or composers or artists birthdays, or some piece of trivia. But this week’s playlist is based entirely upon one recent event. That event is the great Mid-Atlantic blackout of 2003, which took place on August 14, and I hope none of you were adversely impacted by the blackout. Well, we’re going to have our own blackout of sorts on the show as tonight’s records all have to do with black. Enjoy the show! Here’s the complete playlist: Segment 1: Gone BlackNow they may be able to black out the mid-atlantic, but they can’t black out the moon. They Can’t Black Out the Moon – Carroll Gibbons AHO / Anne Lenner/Eric Whitley Small Black – Bennie Moten’s Kansas City Orchestra Black Rag – Original Tuxedo Orch Segment 2: BlackoutContinuing this evening’s “blackout”Best Black – McKenzie’s Candy Kids Blackin’ Blues – Jack Gardner’s Orch / Stanton Crocker Black Eyed Susan Brown – The Four Blackbirds Segment 3: Black BottomThis segment of the show has to do with a dance called the Black Bottom. Predominately danced on the “Off Beat”, it was the prototype for modern Tap dance phrasing, it eventually became more refined and entered the ballroom with couples doing the dance. Black Bottom – Howard Lanin AHO / Frank Harris Black Bottom Stomp – The Red Heads Don’t Take That Black Bottom Away – Warner’s Seven Aces Segment 4: Black Bandana Babies – Lew Leslie’s Blackbird Orch Where’s That Rainbow – Frank Black AHO / Unknown, v. Sing Another Chorus Please – Ted Black AHO, Tom Brown, v. Segment 5: BlackbirdsFor some reason, there seem to be a lot of songs of the 20s and 30s having to do with blackbirds and bluebirds. Bye Bye Blackbird – George Olsen ah Music I’m a Broken Hearted Blackbird – Leroy Smith AHO My Blackbird are Bluebirds Now – The Bostonians So the Bluebirds and the Blackbirds Got Together – Rhythm Boys THANKS FOR LISTENING!  If you enjoy the show, please let us know by leaving a comment on the website or the Facebook page or sending an email to [email protected] And remember, your requests and topic segments are always welcome.RRR is also available as a podcast on iTunes, Spotify, Stitcher, TuneIn and Google Play Music.
