Rapidly Rotating Records 78 RPM Show – 8 October 2000
Welcome to Glenn Robison’s Rapidly Rotating Records, bringing you vintage music to which you can’t *not* tap your toes, from rapidly rotating 78 RPM records of the 1920s and ’30s. On this evenings show we’re going to have a vocabulary lesson, indulge in some wishful thinking about what’s in the air, ponder if etiquette is nuts, and hear some automatic player pianos. Enjoy the show! Here’s the complete playlist: Segment 1: CruciverbalistI came across a new word the other day, and so we’re going to start off the show with a vocabulary lesson: cruciverbalist. A cruciverbalist is someone who writes, or is an aficionado of…crossword puzzles. I don’t know if any of these will be of any help when you’re working your next crossword puzzle, but here we’ve got some songs about…words. Words – Bernie Cummins AHO One Little Word Led to Another – Charlie Palloy AHO I Can’t Write the Words – The New Yorkers / The Boswell Sisters, v. Three Little Words – Django Reinhardt & Stephane Grapelli / The Quintet of the Hot Club of France Segment 2: Wishful ThinkingListener Fred in La Crescent requested “If I Had a Girl Like You” by Henny Hendrickson’s Louisville Serenaders. Unfortunately, I don’t have it, but I can grant half of Fred’s request. I do have a recording of “If I had a Girl Like You”, but it’s by Rudy Vallee, which is going to start off a set of wishful thinking songs. If I Had a Girl Like You – Rudy Vallee If I Had a Talking Picture of You – Johnny Hamp’s Kentucky Serenaders If I Had You – Fred Elizalde and His Anglo-American Band If I Didn’t Have You – Albert Brunies and His Halfway House Orch Segment 3:What’s In The AirOctober 2 in 1937, 26 year old Ronald Reagan made his acting debut in Warner Bros’“Love Is In The Air” Well, love is in the air again. Love is in the Air again – Henry Hall and the BBC Dance Orchestra / Kitty Masters, v. There’s Something in the Air – Ruth Etting It’s In The Air – George Formby Segment 4: EtiquetteOctober 3 in 1872, Emily Price was born. You know her better as Emily Post, THE authority on etiquette. I just love this next record, and you hear a reference to it in every edition of the show, appropriately. Etiquette Blues – Bob Pierce Segment 5: NutsOctober 2 marked the debut in 1950 of the comic strip, Peanuts, created by Charles Schultz. So here to commemorate “Peanuts”, are some songs about “peanuts” Peanuts the nut, not peanuts the comic strip. The Peanut Vendor – Louis Armstrong and His Sebastian New Cotton Club Orchestra I Found a Peanut – Snooks Friedman and His Memphis Stompers / Snooks Friedman , Oscar Groan, v. Segment 6: Automatic Player Piano October 4 in 1881, Edward H. Leveaux of Surrey, England received a U.S. patent for his completely automatic player piano. I just love player pianos. And as a matter of fact, my wife and I met at the home of a mutual friend who had a player piano. Coaxin’ the Piano – Zez Confrey The Old Piano Roll Band – Zez Confrey THANKS FOR LISTENING!
