Many of us have heard of the proverb about the battle of two wolves inside of us all; a battle between “good and bad”, positive and negative, optimism vs cynicism. Who wins the battle….? Whichever one we feed .As First Responders and Emergency Services Members, given the nature of our roles and everything we can see during the course of our careers, we must be particularly intentional with the wolf we feed. Focusing on the good, leaning into kindness and compassion, seeking a positive perspective or switching our mindset to pursue happiness takes purposeful actions and choices, each and every day. Whether on shift, at home or out and about and I look forward to spending a couple of hours with you all. The move towards more renewables in our energy systems complicates matters even further, requiring the development of an integrated power grid and continuous and steady transformation of the UK power system. Network flows must be managed reliably under uncertain demands, uncertain supply, emerging network technologies and possible failures and, further, prices in related markets can be highly volatile. Mathematicians working with engineers and economists, can make significant contributions to address such issues, by helping to develop fit-for-purpose models for next generation energy systems. These interdisciplinary approaches are looking to address a range of associated problems, including modelling, prediction, simulation, control, market and mechanism design and optimisation.
