Der Einsatz von nicht-invasiven Pränataltests (NIPT) hat in Deutschland deutlich zugenommen. Etwa jede zweite Frau entschied sich 2024 für einen solchen Test. Mithilfe einer Blutprobe soll so das Risiko eingeschätzt werden, dass das noch ungeborene Kind mit dem Gendefekt Trisomie auf die Welt kommt. Aber es gibt Kritik: Der Test würde Eltern eine falsche Gewissheit vermitteln und andere Untersuchungen verdrängen. Wie ist aus dem ursprünglich für Einzelfälle gedachten Test ein Massenphänomen geworden? Diese und weitere Fragen beantwortet Clara Hellner, Gesundheitsredakteurin der ZEIT.
