They work with over 70 food pantries and organizations. During 2017 their food will reach approximately 105,000 people, nearly half of whom are children. This non-profit was established in 2015 in memory of Brett Tashman, who succumbed to Desmoplastic Small Round Cell Tumor (DSRCT), a rare type of sarcoma, on September 29th of the same year. Brett was 33 years old; Brett had a heart of gold, a passion for life, and deeply impacted all who knew him. July 9th, 2017 - Create Now
Founder, Jill Gurr, taught a Screenwriting workshop at Optimist Youth Homes, a boys’ detention center in Eagle Rock, where she co-wrote a script with a group of incarcerated teens. Jill discovered that many of these boys were illiterate, but when her program ended, they had learned how to read and write, while others wanted to go back to school or enter college. One tough gang leader even had tattoos removed from his neck and hands. Seeing the incredible impact of this program, she initiated a second Screenwriting workshop at a co-ed detention facility and got the same results. July 9th, 2017 - Habitat For Humanity
Bridgett Mills, Director of Urban Planning and Program Design for Habitat for Humanity San Fernando and Santa Clarita Valleys, joined us on 5900 Wilshire. The California Department of Veterans Affairs (CalVet), Homes 4 Families™, and the City of Palmdale held a public ceremony on July 5th, to break ground on 56 new homes for low income veteran families. Sergio Oliva is the Director of National Programs for the Braille Institute of America, Inc. (BIA). Sergio manages the growth and development of regional and national programs, including The Braille Challenge, Special Collections. Sergio was part of developing the only national reading and writing contest in braille for students who are blind and visually impaired. The annual Braille Challenge finals academic competition took place at USC on June 17th.
