"The Cost of Accommodating" — When making room for others leaves no room for you
There's a difference between being considerate and being a doormat — and most men have blurred that line without even realizing it. In this episode of A Modern Man, we dig into the concept of problematic accommodation: what happens when making space for someone else's feelings starts crowding out your own values. We explore where healthy empathy ends and quiet self-betrayal begins, and what it actually looks like to hold your ground with integrityWhat areas of your life have you been accommodating?Host: JD FerrellProduced by: JD FerrellPresented by the Modern Podcast Network and themodernHQ.comFollow us on Instagram: @ThemoderntherapistJD & @theModernHQ

The Comfort of Avoiding: The Hidden Patterns That Keep Us Stuck
Avoidance isn’t laziness it is protection. In this episode, I explore avoidance not as laziness but as protection. The subtle ways we distance ourselves from hard conversations, from uncomfortable emotions, from risks that might expose us.I share how I’ve mistaken withdrawal for strength, intellectualizing for clarity, perfectionism for standards. How I’ve avoided anger. Avoided love. Avoided being seen before I felt ready.Avoidance works. That’s the problem. It gives relief. It buys time. It keeps us intact..This conversation isn’t about shame. It’s about awareness. About naming the pattern.About choosing discomfort in small, intentional doses. What are you Avoiding?Host: JD FerrellProduced by: JD FerrellPresented by the Modern Podcast Network and themodernHQ.comFollow us on Instagram: @ThemoderntherapistJD & @theModernHQ

From the Village, To Girl Dad, Through Covid with Scott DeRosa
On this episode of A Modern Man Podcast, I am joined by my friend Scott Derosa. Scott and I met playing volleyball this fall. He talks about his struggles growing up with a father of addiction in the panhandle of West Texas. He did not come from a diverse community, but the village that raised him taught him to love his neighbor regardless of who they are and what they look like. He then left the small town with big-city dreams just outside of Houston. He spent a few years there until he met his eventual wife. This led him to be a girl dad to 3 incredible young girls at such a young age. He made the commitment and moved to Oklahoma City in 2008, and he has been here ever since. After a decade of marriage, covid came. He thought he was changing careers and inevitably leaving Oklahoma, but the pandemic changed that. He was lucky enough to stay at his job for a few months longer than expected, but after that, he was unsure of his future. All he knows for sure is that he wants to be honest and respectful of everyone’s struggle and he understands we all need help sometimes.
