In this first episode of Adventures in Grace on EXCUSES, we expose the lie many Christians believe — that God's acceptance is something we must earn. Too often, performance-based Christianity and the orphan mindset keep us stuck in excuses, shame, and striving. But the Bible says in Ephesians 1, Romans 8, and John 8 that God's love and adoption were His plan from the beginning, and the truth sets us free. Discover how to stop making excuses, embrace your identity in Christ, and live from God's unconditional love and grace.

#139 - Hyper-Grace ... Hyper-Mean: The Rise of the Grace Pharisee
In Episode 139 of "Adventures in Grace," titled "Hyper-Grace, Hyper-Mean: The Rise of the Grace Pharisee," we delve into the unsettling trend of hostility within the hyper-grace movement. Despite its foundation in the liberating message of grace, recent personal attacks by key figures, including a publisher, reveal a disconcerting shift toward exclusivity and condemnation reminiscent of the Pharisees' behavior that Jesus confronted. Our host shares personal experiences of being on the receiving end of such attacks, highlighting the irony of grace advocates displaying ungracious behavior. This episode challenges the notion of spirituality and how it's demonstrated in our treatment of others, especially those who oppose or annoy us. It contrasts the loving and inclusive approach of Jesus with the judgmental and elitist attitude of the Pharisees, prompting a reflection on what true grace looks like in action. The discussion extends to the broader community of grace preachers and warns of the potential pitfalls of aligning with those who may preach grace but exhibit mean-spiritedness. Listeners are guided through a thoughtful examination of influential figures in the modern grace movement, drawing attention to those who embody the genuine spirit of grace, like Malcolm Smith, Paul Young, Brad Jersak, Father Aidan Kimmel, and Tom Wright. The episode encourages support for these ministers while advising caution elsewhere, particularly with certain grace ministers and publishing companies. Tune into "Hyper-Grace, Hyper-Mean: The Rise of the Grace Pharisee" for a compelling discussion on the true essence of grace, the importance of authentic spiritual encounters over mere teachings, and the recognition of those who truly walk in grace's path. #134 - Classic Christianity by Bob George (Chp 12 - Freedom in Dependency)
Podcast Notes: Freedom in Dependency George's Story: George, blind due to diabetes, struggled emotionally, feeling rejected by God. He was taught that faith's size determines God's response to prayers. His church emphasized faith as a means to healing, blaming individuals for their ailments. George internalized this, believing God hated him for his "little faith." Misconceptions of Faith: Faith is Not a Feeling: Emotional responses in religious settings are not faith. Faith is Not Intellectual Agreement: Knowing doctrine doesn't equate to faith. Faith is Not a Power to Manipulate God: Presumption, not faith, tries to control God. True Nature of Faith: Faith's value lies in its object, not in itself. Faith involves dependency and action based on belief. The size of faith isn't crucial; the will of God and responding to His word is. Jesus: The Perfect Example of Faith: Jesus lived as the perfect man, dependent on the Father. His miracles were God's work through Him. He demonstrated total dependency and obedience. Living by Faith: Faith involves love for God, resulting in dependency and obedience. True obedience stems from love and dependency, not just adherence to rules. Dependency is expressed through surrender and renewal of the mind. The Role of Thankfulness: Surrendering personal rights is essential for a thankful spirit. Thankfulness is a concrete expression of faith in God's goodness. It leads to peace and freedom, even in adversity. George's Transformation: George found peace by surrendering to God and being thankful. His last 18 months were fulfilling, demonstrating the power of true faith. Conclusion: Faith is about dependency on God, not about controlling outcomes. True faith leads to freedom, peace, and a fulfilling relationship with God.

#133 - Classic Christianity by Bob George (Chp 11 - Living By a Higher Law
Understanding Legalism in Christian Life: Legalism often refers to imposing extra conditions for salvation or Christian living, beyond what's taught in the Bible. It's not about the actions (e.g., Bible study, witnessing) but the motive behind them. Legalism involves doing these actions out of a sense of obligation or to earn God's acceptance, rather than out of love and gratitude. Motivation and Source of Life: Actions can be identical, but the motive determines if it's legalism or genuine faith. Legalism is self-driven and about outward performance; genuine faith is about Christ living within and guiding actions. The analogy: Two people can perform the same action (like tapping to music), but one responds naturally to hearing music (genuine faith), while the other only imitates the actions without hearing (legalism). Living by the Spirit: Being filled with the Spirit isn't about a mystical experience but understanding and accepting God's love and grace. It's about letting this understanding of God's love control your actions and attitudes, much like being drunk with wine influences behavior. Experiencing God's Love: Understanding God's love is transformative; it changes how you view yourself and others. It's not about following rules but responding to the "music" of God's love and grace. This love is patient, kind, not self-seeking, keeps no record of wrongs, and always perseveres (referencing 1 Corinthians 13). Practical Implications: Understanding God's love affects every area of life, especially relationships. Misunderstanding God's love leads to problems in personal and family life. We treat others the way we perceive God treats us. If we see God as harsh and demanding, we'll likely treat others the same way. The Power of the Holy Spirit: The Holy Spirit empowers believers not just for supernatural acts, but more so to comprehend and accept the profound depths of God's love. This understanding is what fills believers with the fullness of God (referencing Ephesians 3:14-21). Love in Action: God's love isn't abstract; it's meant to be lived out in relationships. Real-life example: Bob George's realization of how he was hurting his relationship with his son over something trivial (the cost of a deluxe cheeseburger) and his decision to prioritize love and relationship over frugality. The Higher Law of Christ: Christians are not without standards after being freed from the law; they're under the "law of Christ" or "law of liberty," which is a higher standard. This law is about serving one another in love, which fulfills the entire law (referencing Galatians 5:13-14 and Romans 13:10). Love is the defining mark of Jesus' disciples, and it's possible only when believers first receive and are filled with God's love (referencing John 13:34-35).

#131 - Classic Christianity by Bob George (Chp 10 - Free from the Yoke of Slavery)
FREE FROM THE YOKE OF SLAVERY Misconception Addressed: Preaching God's love and acceptance might give people a license to sin. Paul's Letters to the Romans: Emphasizes that understanding God's love and grace makes sinning under grace seem absurd. Illustrations: Highlights the irrationality of returning to sin when presented with God's abundant love. Christian World's Obsession with Sin: Criticizes the focus on sin rather than knowing Christ. The goal of the Christian life is to know Christ, not just to avoid sin. Arguments Against Legalism: The law can expose sin but can't provide a solution. Law's limitations: Incites sin. Deals only with external actions. Involves human effort. Cannot change the heart. Conclusion: Importance of standing firm in grace. Avoid falling back into legalism. Embrace the abundant life offered by Jesus Christ. The overarching message is that Christians should focus on the abundant love and grace of Jesus Christ rather than getting entangled in legalistic views and practices.

#130 - Classic Christianity by Bob George (Chp 9 - The Ministry of Condemnation)
Here is a summary of this chapter: 1. The Standard of Perfection The law demands perfection, and even a single failure results in being guilty of breaking the entire law. Summary: The text references James 2:10, emphasizing that if one stumbles at just one point of the law, they are guilty of breaking all of it. This sets an incredibly high standard, which is perfection throughout one's entire life. 2. The Curse of the Law Relying on observing the law results in a curse, as the law's standard is total perfection. Summary: Paul, in Galatians 3:10, states that those who rely on the law are under a curse. This curse arises not because the law is flawed, but because humans cannot meet its perfect standards. Jesus further magnifies the law's demands, emphasizing its spirit and meaning. 3. Law vs. Grace The law requires man to make himself acceptable to God through works, while grace offers acceptance as a gift through Jesus Christ. Summary: Under the law, acceptance is based on actions, often identified by the condition "if." In contrast, under grace, acceptance is a gift given through faith in Jesus Christ. Ephesians 2:8-9 emphasizes salvation by grace through faith, not by works. 4. The Old vs. the New Covenant The Old Covenant, or the law, had specific conditions for acceptance, while the New Covenant offers a relationship based on grace. Summary: The early church recognized the distinction between the Old and New Covenants. The Old Covenant was based on laws and conditions, while the New Covenant emphasizes a relationship with God based on grace and faith in Jesus Christ. 5. The True Purpose of the Law The law was never meant to make a person right with God but to make sin (independent living) more apparent. Summary: The law acts as a mirror, showing imperfections but not providing a solution. It sets a standard of perfection, and any deviation results in judgment. The law makes individuals conscious of their sins but doesn't offer redemption. In essence, the chapter delves into the differences between the law and grace, emphasizing the challenges of living under the law's demands and the freedom offered by grace through Jesus Christ. The recurring theme is the transformative power of understanding one's relationship with God under the New Covenant, which is rooted in grace and faith.

The key is to reject these lies and rely on the truth of one's identity in Christ. 2. New Identity in Christ Embracing a new identity in Christ is essential for spiritual growth and overcoming personal challenges, such as sinful temptations. The Power of God's Love and Grace The gospel's message is not just about future salvation but also about the power and life it brings in the present. Summary: The gospel is described as a message of love, acceptance, and life, offering believers the power to live victoriously in the present. This power is rooted in the believer's new identity in Christ. 4. Safety from Wrath Believers are shielded from the wrath we have created in our independent living due to the sacrifice of Jesus Christ, ensuring they are seen as righteous in God's eyes. Summary: The text emphasizes that Christ took upon Himself all of our wages of sin and subsequent wrath at the cross. As a result, believers are now hidden within His righteousness, ensuring they are safe from our created wrath. 5. The Practical Power of New Identity Understanding one's new identity in Christ has profound practical implications, especially when dealing with deep-seated issues. Summary: The narrative delves into the story of Lee, who, despite being a Christian, grapples with his desires. The solution presented is not merely a change in behavior but a complete embrace of a new identity in Christ. In essence, the chapter underscores the transformative power of understanding and embracing one's new identity in Christ. Through personal stories and theological insights, the author highlights the practical implications of this new identity, emphasizing the freedom and power it brings to believers in their daily lives.

#128 - Classic Christianity by Bob George (Chp 7 - Loved and Accepted)
Here is a summary of this chapter: 1. Love vs. Acceptance The distinction between love and acceptance is explored through a personal story involving the author and his son, Bobby. While love is often assured, acceptance can be more elusive. Summary: Bobby, after struggling to find a job post-college, expresses to his father that while he always felt loved, he wasn't sure if he was accepted, especially in terms of his career choices. This highlights the profound difference between feeling loved and feeling genuinely accepted for who one is. 2. Righteousness in Christ The concept of righteousness and acceptance in the eyes of God is discussed, emphasizing that true Christians are as righteous as Jesus Christ. Summary: The author challenges us with the idea that if they are true Christians, they are as righteous and acceptable in God's sight as Jesus Christ. This bold statement underscores the transformative power of faith and the depth of God's acceptance. 3. The Power of Unconditional Love Christianity uniquely offers the message of God's unconditional love and acceptance, contrasting with other religions that often focus on appeasing deities. Summary: The narrative emphasizes that while many religions are based on conditional love and the need to appease deities, Christianity stands out by offering unconditional love and acceptance through Jesus Christ. This powerful message has the potential to change lives. 4. Jean's Encounter with God's Love A story of a woman named Jean illustrates the transformative power of God's love and acceptance. Summary: Jean, who struggled with depression and multiple suicide attempts, finds solace and transformation after attending a home Bible study. Her journey underscores the healing and redemptive power of understanding God's unconditional love and acceptance. 5. The Impact of Conditional vs. Unconditional Acceptance The text delves into the destructive force of conditional love and acceptance, contrasting it with the life-changing power of unconditional love. Summary: Conditional love and acceptance can lead to feelings of inadequacy and despair. In contrast, understanding and experiencing God's unconditional love and acceptance can bring about profound positive change in an individual's life. In essence, this chapter emphasizes the transformative power of understanding one's unconditional acceptance in the eyes of God. Through personal stories and theological insights, the author underscores the importance of distinguishing between love and genuine acceptance, highlighting the profound impact this understanding can have on an individual's life.

#127 - Classic Christianity by Bob George (Chp 6 - Toward a Proper Self-Image)
1. It's a Matter of Relationship: The foundation of our self-image should be built on our relationship with God. Our worth isn't determined by achievements or possessions, but by God's unconditional love. Deep understanding of this relationship can significantly transform our self-perception. 2. Looking in the Wrong Places: Many seek validation in wealth, popularity, or achievements. These external validations are fleeting and don't provide lasting contentment. True contentment and self-worth come from understanding our intrinsic value in God's eyes. 3. Trapped by Labels: Society often labels individuals based on appearances, backgrounds, or mistakes. These labels can confine us, limiting our understanding of our true potential. By breaking free from these worldly labels, we recognize our true identity in Christ. 4. Focused on Failure: Obsessing over past mistakes can warp our self-image. God's grace means we're forgiven, and He doesn't view us through the lens of our failures. Recognizing this allows us to move forward with confidence and hope. 5. The Two Kinds of Human Beings: There are those who are still searching for their purpose and identity in worldly things. And those who have found their identity in Christ and live from that understanding. Recognizing which category we fall into helps guide our journey and growth. 6. Total Identification: It's crucial to totally identify with Christ to realize our true worth. This means seeing ourselves as God sees us – redeemed, cherished, and with a purpose. This identification eradicates worldly misconceptions and empowers us. 7. What Will You Do with the New You?: Understanding our worth in Christ gives birth to a 'new' individual, free from past misconceptions. This new identity calls for a life in alignment with God's purpose and values. It's an invitation to embrace this new self, to live with purpose, love, and true fulfillment.

#125 - Classic Christianity by Bob George (Chp 4 - Forgiven to be Filled)
God's Forgiveness and the Power of Christ's Resurrection Edward's Struggle: The chapter opens with a story about Edward, a man deeply rooted in his faith but tormented by a past sin. Despite believing in Christ, he can't accept God's forgiveness, symbolizing the internal battles many Christians face. Bondage of Past Mistakes: Many believers are trapped by past errors, preventing them from fully experiencing Christ's indwelling life. This bondage hinders spiritual growth and maturity. Key Quote: "Until you rest in the finality of the cross, you will never experience the reality of the resurrection." 2 Peter 1:3-9 Insights: This passage emphasizes that everything needed for a spiritual life is already provided in Christ. Yet, many Christians search for something "deeper," not realizing that true spiritual depth is about discovering more within Christ. Key Quote: "Christian maturity is...discovering more and more of what we already have in Him." Old vs. New Testament Forgiveness: Old Testament: Introduced the concept of atonement, which means a covering. Sacrifices covered sins but didn't remove them. New Testament: Focuses on Christ's sacrifice, which removes sins once and for all. It contrasts the repetitive nature of Old Testament sacrifices with the finality of Christ's sacrifice. Key Quote: "Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!" (John 1:29). Present Reality of Forgiveness: The chapter underscores that forgiveness isn't just about future salvation but is a present reality. This understanding allows believers to walk daily with a God who loves and accepts them, free from the shackles of past mistakes. The chapter provides a profound exploration of forgiveness, emphasizing the need for believers to recognize and embrace the complete forgiveness offered through Christ's sacrifice.

#124 - Classic Christianity by Bob George (Chp 3 - Man Alive! The Neglected Half of the Gospel)
Chapter 3 of "Classic Christianity" by George Bob is titled "Man Alive! The Neglected Half of the Gospel." The chapter emphasizes a crucial but often overlooked aspect of the gospel message. It highlights that Christianity is not only about salvation and forgiveness, but also about the restoration of humanity's true identity and purpose. The author argues that a significant portion of Christianity's transformative power lies in recognizing the inherent value of humanity and our role as God's beloved creation. Through biblical references and theological insights, the chapter explores how the gospel brings renewal to every aspect of human existence—spiritually, emotionally, and physically. It urges readers to move beyond a narrow focus on sin and redemption and embrace the holistic message of the gospel that leads to a flourishing life. The neglected half of the gospel, according to the author, involves understanding our God-given potential, our unique gifts, and our responsibility to steward the world around us. In essence, the chapter advocates for a comprehensive understanding of Christianity that encompasses both the forgiveness of sins and the revitalization of human purpose, resulting in a deeper and more fulfilling relationship with God.

We begin our study of Bob George's "Classic Christianity" by looking at Chapter 1 "Busy and Barren". In this chapter Bog George discusses the frustration that many believers face as they replace relationship by religion. We discuss a foundational truth that will come up a lot in our study ... "The Truth sets you free" ... which means if truth sets us free, then error binds us.

#121 - Classic Christianity by Bob George (Introduction)
"Classic Christianity" by Bob George is a book that presents a profound exploration of the essential principles of the Christian faith. In this book, Bob George seeks to distill Christianity to its purest form, free from religious legalism and misconceptions. The book challenges readers to reexamine their beliefs, emphasizing the transformative power of God's grace and the simplicity of the gospel message. At the heart of "Classic Christianity," Bob George emphasizes that Christianity is not about following a set of rules or striving for self-righteousness. Instead, it centers on a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, founded on God's unmerited favor and love. The author highlights the significance of understanding and accepting God's grace as the foundation of one's faith, freeing believers from guilt and condemnation. Throughout the book, George delves into fundamental Christian doctrines, offering clear explanations of topics such as justification, sanctification, and the role of the Holy Spirit. He aims to provide readers with a fresh perspective on these doctrines, emphasizing that they are not theological concepts to grasp but living truths that profoundly impact believers' lives. Moreover, "Classic Christianity" addresses common misunderstandings that can hinder believers' growth, such as the notion that they must strive to earn God's love and approval. Bob George encourages readers to rest in the finished work of Christ on the cross, understanding that their righteousness comes through faith in Him, not through their own efforts. Furthermore, the book discusses the significance of genuine freedom in Christ. George challenges the idea that the Christian life is burdensome or joyless, advocating for the experience of true liberty in Christ. He emphasizes the importance of aligning our thoughts with God's truth, shedding the shackles of legalism and embracing a life guided by the Holy Spirit. In "Classic Christianity," Bob George's writing is accessible and heartfelt, aiming to connect with readers on a personal level and encourage them to embark on a journey of deeper faith. By presenting the core tenets of Christianity in a straightforward and relatable manner, the book seeks to inspire believers to experience the freedom, joy, and transformation that come from fully embracing God's grace and love.

#114 - Thinking about Inerrancy (Part 3)
In this episode, I summarize the last two episodes on Innerancy and give my own views of the topic. Be forwarned ... I do not in any way think my view is the "last word" on the topic. I might leave you with more questions than answers. But I feel this view checks off most of the boxes where I still see the Scripture as inerrant and inspired, but helps me see consistency with the love of God, Trinity yet still answers some of those problematic texts we read in the Old Testament.

#113 - Thinking about Inerrancy (Part 2)
We continue our look at inerrancy of Scripture this week by listening to a talk by Dr Jeannie Constantinou, Postdoctoral Teaching Fellow, Theology, and Religious Studies, University of San Diego and AFR podcaster (Search The Scriptures). I hope to interview Dr. Constantinou in the future, but for now, we will listen to an Eastern Orthodox perspective of this issue (although Brad Jersak is Eastern Orthodox as well). Next week, I will summary both views and talk through how I see this issue.

#110 - A More Christlike God (Chp 14 - The Gospel in Chairs)
In "A More Christlike God," Bradley Jersak uses the "Gospel in Chairs" illustration to effectively communicate the difference between a traditional, punitive understanding of the Gospel and a more Christlike, relational approach. This powerful analogy involves two chairs representing different views of the Gospel. In the first chair, labeled the "Traditional Gospel," a person represents humanity, and another person represents Jesus. Between them, there is a gulf symbolizing the divide between humanity and God due to sin. In this view, Jesus' role is to bridge that gap through his death on the cross, satisfying God's wrath and judgment. This portrayal emphasizes the legalistic and punitive aspects of the Gospel, focusing on humanity's sinfulness and the necessity of appeasing an angry God. In the second chair, labeled the "Christlike Gospel," a person again represents humanity, but this time, another person represents God the Father. In this illustration, the Father approaches the person, showing no distance or separation between them. Instead of focusing on the wrath of God, this portrayal emphasizes God's unchanging love, mercy, and desire for relationship with humanity. Jesus' role in the Christlike Gospel is to reveal God's true character, demonstrating his unconditional love and forgiveness. The "Gospel in Chairs" example effectively illustrates the stark contrast between the traditional, punitive understanding of the Gospel and a more Christlike, relational approach. By emphasizing God's unwavering love and desire for relationship with humanity, the Christlike Gospel offers a more beautiful and transformative message that is consistent with the life and teachings of Jesus.

#109 - A More Christlike God (Chp 13 - The Pauline Metaphors)
In Chapter 13 of A More Christlike God: A More Beautiful Gospel, titled "Unwrathing the Cross Part II: The Pauline Metaphors," author Bradley Jersak addresses the Apostle Paul's metaphors used to describe the crucifixion of Christ. These metaphors serve to highlight the self-giving love and grace of God through the cross. Jersak begins by emphasizing that Paul's metaphors are not meant to be taken as literal explanations of the crucifixion, but rather as illustrative language to help us understand God's love for humanity. He then explores several key metaphors that Paul uses in his writings. First, Jersak discusses the "Christus Victor" metaphor, which portrays Jesus as the victorious conqueror of sin, death, and evil. This metaphor emphasizes that the crucifixion was not about satisfying God's wrath but about defeating the powers that oppress humanity. Next, the "Ransom" metaphor is examined, where Jesus' death is viewed as a payment to redeem humanity from the bondage of sin. Jersak highlights that this metaphor should be understood in the context of freeing humanity from enslavement, rather than appeasing an angry God. Finally, the "Reconciliation" metaphor is explored, which emphasizes that the cross serves to restore the broken relationship between God and humanity. This metaphor underscores the idea that God's love and forgiveness are what bring about reconciliation, rather than punishment or retribution. In conclusion, Jersak's examination of the Pauline metaphors in this chapter emphasizes that the cross is ultimately about God's self-giving love and grace, which seek to heal and restore humanity.

#108 - A More Christlike God (Chp 12 - Divine Wrath as Giving Over)
In Chapter 12 of "A More Christlike God: A More Beautiful Gospel," Bradley Jersak tackles the traditional understanding of the crucifixion of Jesus and the implications of divine wrath in relation to the cross. He aims to dispel misconceptions about the crucifixion, primarily the idea that it represents God's wrath being poured out upon Jesus in place of humanity. Instead, Jersak offers alternative metaphors to better convey the true meaning of the cross and its connection to God's love and mercy. Jersak begins by discussing the various metaphors used in the Bible to describe the significance of Jesus' crucifixion. He highlights that these metaphors serve as lenses through which we can view the cross and understand its implications for our lives. However, he cautions against interpreting the cross solely through the lens of penal substitutionary atonement, which suggests that Jesus suffered God's wrath on our behalf to satisfy divine justice. Instead, Jersak proposes that we consider other metaphors from Scripture that portray the cross as an expression of God's love and self-sacrifice. For example, Jesus is depicted as the Passover Lamb, whose blood saves us from death and brings us into the covenant relationship with God. Additionally, Jesus is portrayed as the Suffering Servant, who willingly endures suffering and death to bring healing and redemption to humanity. By exploring these alternative metaphors, Jersak encourages readers to develop a more balanced and nuanced understanding of the cross. Rather than focusing on divine wrath and punishment, he argues that the crucifixion should be seen as a testament to God's love, grace, and commitment to the restoration of humanity. In this light, the cross becomes a powerful symbol of hope, redemption, and transformation. In summary, Chapter 12 of "A More Christlike God: A More Beautiful Gospel" challenges traditional interpretations of the crucifixion that emphasize divine wrath and punishment. Bradley Jersak offers alternative biblical metaphors that highlight the cross as an expression of God's love, self-sacrifice, and commitment to the restoration of humanity. By doing so, he helps readers develop a more balanced and Christlike understanding of the cross and its significance in the Christian faith.

#107 - A More Christlike God (Chp 11 - Divine Wrath as Giving Over)
In Chapter 11 of "A More Christlike God: A More Beautiful Gospel," author Bradley Jersak examines the concept of divine wrath and how it is often misunderstood. He argues that this misunderstanding has led to a distorted perception of God, characterized by anger, punishment, and vengeance. Jersak challenges this image by offering an alternative understanding of divine wrath as "giving over" or allowing the natural consequences of human choices to unfold. Jersak begins by pointing out that the Bible contains numerous passages that describe God as angry or wrathful. However, these depictions are often misinterpreted as God actively punishing or seeking revenge on people. This image of a vengeful, angry God is a construct based on human projections of what divine justice should look like, and it overlooks the broader context and meaning of biblical wrath. To offer a more nuanced perspective, Jersak explores the idea of divine wrath as "giving over" or "handing over." In this view, God's wrath is not an expression of His anger or desire to punish, but rather a process in which He allows humans to experience the consequences of their actions. This is based on the principle of free will, which suggests that humans have the ability to make choices and must bear the responsibility for those choices, even if they lead to negative outcomes. Drawing from biblical examples, Jersak shows that divine wrath is not an arbitrary punishment imposed by God, but rather the natural consequences that follow when individuals or communities turn away from God's love and guidance. For instance, when Israel rejected God's guidance and turned to idols, they experienced the consequences of their choices in the form of war, famine, and exile. In these instances, God's wrath is manifested as His withdrawal and allowing the natural outcomes of human actions to take place. Jersak emphasizes that divine wrath as "giving over" is not a passive or indifferent act on God's part. Rather, it is a painful and heartbreaking decision for God, who desires good for His creation but respects the choices made by humans. He explains that God's ultimate goal is not to punish or inflict suffering, but to bring about redemption and transformation in the lives of individuals and communities. In this light, Jersak proposes that understanding divine wrath as "giving over" can help to reconcile the seemingly contradictory aspects of God's nature—His love and justice. By allowing people to experience the consequences of their actions, God demonstrates His commitment to justice while also offering an opportunity for repentance, growth, and transformation. Furthermore, Jersak argues that this understanding of divine wrath is more consistent with the character of Jesus, who is often depicted as the embodiment of God's love, mercy, and compassion. Jesus' teachings and actions consistently reflect a God who is not vengeful or punitive, but one who desires mercy, forgiveness, and restoration. By reinterpreting divine wrath as "giving over," we can reconcile the image of God in the Old Testament with the more compassionate and loving portrayal of Jesus in the New Testament. In conclusion, Bradley Jersak's Chapter 11, "Divine Wrath as Giving Over," challenges the common perception of God as a wrathful, punishing figure by offering an alternative understanding of divine wrath as allowing the natural consequences of human choices to unfold. This view not only helps to reconcile the seemingly contradictory aspects of God's nature but also brings us closer to a more Christlike image of God—one that is defined by love, mercy, and the desire for redemption and transformation.

#106 - A More Christlike God (Chp 10 - Love and Wrath as Consent)
In this episode, we begin to tackle the issue of the "wrath of God". We can't deny that "wrath" is all over the Bible. We begin looking at this issue in this episode.

#103 - A More Christlike God (Chp 8 - The Cross as Divine Participation)
Brad Jersak explores the meaning of the cross and its significance for Christian faith. Jersak argues that the cross is not only a demonstration of God's love for humanity, but it is also a revelation of God's nature and character. Jersak explains that on the cross, God enters into the depths of human suffering and participates fully in the human experience. Through Jesus, God experiences the pain, injustice, and oppression of the world, and in doing so, God brings redemption and healing to all humanity. Jersak emphasizes that the cross is not an act of divine punishment or wrath, but it is an act of divine solidarity with humanity. On the cross, God identifies with the brokenness of humanity and offers hope, healing, and restoration. Jersak concludes the chapter by stressing that the cross is not only a historical event but also an ongoing reality in the lives of believers. As Christians participate in the cross, they too enter into the suffering of the world and become agents of God's love and compassion. This message of "Christ in you" is a really important message that I don't hear among ministers today.
