I will be with you always!

I will be with you always! The celebration of the Ascension of the Lord marks the end of an era. Jesus is no longer with us. The Gospel of Luke and the Acts of the Apostles tell of a departure of Jesus through an ascension. But the Gospel of Matthew reads this period between Jesus' presence and his final return differently: It will be a time when he will be with us. He is Lord of all, calling all nations into a community of the baptised, attempting to observe everything that Jesus has taught them. He may no longer be with us physically, but he will be with us to the end of time. Presented by world-renowned biblical scholar Rev. Professor Francis J. Moloney SDB AM, Audio Divina, is a Lectio-Divina styled reflection on the gospel for Ascension Sunday, Year A. To love Jesus and to keep the commandment of love

To love Jesus and to keep the commandment of love: Anyone who claims to love Jesus must live according to his commandments. We all hope to love Jesus, but wonder if we can keep the commandments. But we are not alone. As Jesus was the "first Advocate," teaching and showing us what love is all about, his return to the Father will lead to the gift of "another Paraclete who will equally journey with us as we attempt to live the single commandment that lies at the heart of all the commandments: "This is my commandment, that you love one another" (John 15:17). To love as Jesus loved seems impossible. But with thro the gift of the guidance of the Spirit, God makes all things possible. Presented by world-renowned biblical scholar Rev. Professor Francis J. I am the way, the truth, and the life - 5th Sunday of Easter

I am the way, the truth, and the life: Last week, we heard Jesus present himself as "the gate," and now we hear why - he is the way, the truth, and the life. On the night before he died he delivers a long discourse to the disciples. He is about to leave them, and they must continue on in the world in his absence, calling on them to have faith so that they might continue his "way" in the world, until such time that he returns. Jesus points out, however, that we cannot simply go on doing what Jesus did; we must maintain our union with Jesus and his Father so we may do "even greater things" that respond to the needs of our times. Presented by world-renowned biblical scholar Rev. Professor Francis J. Moloney SDB AM, Audio Divina, is a Lectio-Divina styled reflection on the gospel for 5th Sunday of Easter, Year A. I am the gate!

I am the gate!: The tenth chapter of the Gospel of John eventually identifies Jesus as the Good Shepherd, as do other passages in the Gospels (see John 10:11-18; Luke 15:3-7; Matthew 18:12-14). However, the opening ten verses to John 10 that we use in the Liturgy today do not identify Jesus as the Good Shepherd. He is presented as the gate. This is surprising, but the Gospel passage on Jesus as the Good Shepherd, first of all insists that all who wish to nourish and guide God's people must do so by passing through the gate who is Jesus. As Jesus says at another place of the Gospel of John: "I am the way, the truth, and the light" (14:6). Presented by world-renowned biblical scholar Rev. Professor Francis J. Moloney SDB AM, Audio Divina, is a Lectio-Divina styled reflection on the gospel for 4th Sunday of Easter, Year A. From Jerusalem to Emmaus, and back again!

From Jerusalem to Emmaus, and back again!: For Luke, the centre-point of God's saving presence among us is Jerusalem. There all the Paschal events take place. There the community will begin. But two disillusioned disciples have had enough. They walk away from Jerusalem. The risen Jesus sets out to journey with them. They know everything, but they do not see Jesus. By explaining the Scriptures and breaking bread with these weak disciples, Jesus brings them back to the home they should never have left: Jerusalem. Presented by world-renowned biblical scholar Rev. Professor Francis J. Moloney SDB AM, Audio Divina, is a Lectio-Divina styled reflection on the gospel for 3rd Sunday of Easter, Year A. Blessed are Those Who do not See, Yet Believe

Blessed are those who do not see, yet believe: Today's reading focuses upon the risen Jesus' gift of peace to his frightened disciples. Most importantly, it blesses all subsequent disciples who, unlike the first disciples and Thomas, believe without seeing. John wrote his Gospel for these subsequent disciples. Presented by world-renowned biblical scholar Rev. Professor Francis J. Moloney SDB AM, Audio Divina, is a Lectio-Divina styled reflection on the gospel for 2nd Sunday of Easter, Year A. The Birth of Easter Faith

The Birth of Easter Faith: The empty tomb does not generate belief in Jesus as the Risen One for Mary Magdalene, nor for the two disciples, Simon Peter and the Beloved Disciple. But they are drawn to the tomb. There they see that God has been victorious over death. The clothes of death have been emptied. Even though he does not "see" the Risen Jesus, the Beloved Disciples sees God's victory, and believes. Easter faith has been born. Presented by world-renowned biblical scholar Rev. Professor Francis J. Moloney SDB AM, Audio Divina, is a Lectio-Divina styled reflection on the gospel for 7th Sunday of the Year, Year A. The Risen Jesus Promises a New Era in Galilee

The Risen Jesus Promises a New Era in Galilee: Matthew has already  reported earth-shattering events such as an earthquake, splitting of rocks and the resurrection of the dead at Jesus' death. He does the same in his account of the resurrection, marking the turning point of the ages. The women only find an empty tomb, are told to announce Jesus' resurrection and his future meeting with them all in Galilee. Because of Jesus' death and resurrection, nothing can be the same again. We gather as brothers and sisters of Jesus to form the new family of the Risen Lord. Presented by world-renowned biblical scholar Rev. Professor Francis J. The Death of Jesus, and the Birth of the Church

The death of Jesus, and the birth of a new era: John's story of Jesus' passion is unique. Jesus is in control at all times in the Garden, before Jewish authorities, before Pilate, on the Cross, and is buried as a king. At the centre of the story, Pilate proclaims him as a King, and on the Cross he comes to his final glory, perfecting the task given to him by his Father. In dying, he pours down the Spirit on the infant Church of his Mother and the Beloved Disciple. The blood and water of Eucharist and Baptism flow from his pierced side. Presented by world-renowned biblical scholar Rev. Professor Francis J. Moloney SDB AM, Audio Divina, is a Lectio-Divina styled reflection on the gospel for Good Friday, Year A. The Death of Jesus, and the Birth of a New Era

The Death of Jesus, and the Birth of a New Era:  Matthew's passion narrative tells the story of Jesus' last night with his disciples, his arrest, trials, and eventual execution. Through this account of Jesus' unjust and violent death Matthew has insinuated a message central to his understanding of what God has done for us in and through Jesus: he has opened the way to God for all nations as all the signs of the end of the world accompany his death. Heaven and earth pass away, but after he has been raised, the Gospel will be preached to all nations. Presented by world-renowned biblical scholar Rev. Professor Francis J. Moloney SDB AM, Audio Divina, is a Lectio-Divina styled reflection on the gospel for Passion Sunday, Year A. Do you believe this? - 5th Sunday of Lent - Year A

Do you believe this? Instruction on true faith continues. The sickness and death of Lazarus is not "unto death," but to manifest the glory of God and set in motion the glorification of Jesus, the Son of God. The disciples, Martha, Mary, and the Jewish people all struggle to cope with Jesus' claim to be the resurrection and the life. His restoration of Lazarus to life is a sign that his claim is true, but doubt and rejection surround his insistence that we see the life-giving power of his death and resurrection: Do you believe this? Many do not. Presented by world-renowned biblical scholar Rev. Professor Francis J. Moloney SDB AM, Audio Divina, is a Lectio-Divina styled reflection on the gospel for 5th Sunday of Lent, Year A. From blindness to sight - from sight to blindness - 4th Sunday of Lent

From blindness to sight - from sight to blindness: The story of the man born blind leads us further in our understanding of true faith. The man begins totally without sight. Gradually he comes to confess that "the man called Jesus" is a "prophet," possibly "from God," and falls before Jesus confessing that he is "the Son of Man." He has journeyed from blindness to sight. Another story is also told. It is of the gradual and increasing blindness of the Jewish leaders who begin by accepting that Jesus is a miracle worker, but who finish by rejecting Jesus as a sinner. They are judged to be blind. Presented by world-renowned biblical scholar Rev. Professor Francis J. Moloney SDB AM, Audio Divina, is a Lectio-Divina styled reflection on the gospel for 4th Sunday of Lent, Year A. The Saviour of the World - 3rd Sunday of Lent Year A

The Saviour of the World: Over the next weeks those to be baptised at Easter, and those of us already baptised, will be instructed on the nature of true Christian faith. The Samaritan woman is led by Jesus from total inability to accept his offer of waters that will produce eternal life, through the hope that he might be the Messiah. Summoned by their kinswoman, the Samaritan villagers come to Jesus, welcome them into their midst and go beyond the limited faith of the woman: Jesus is acclaimed as the saviour of the world. No Place to Pitch a Tent

No Place to Pitch a Tent: Today's Gospel reminds us who it is that we are following to a cross. The transfiguration indicates that the suffering Son of Man is also the Messiah, the Son of God. Chosen disciples are witness to this truth, and they would like to bring Jesus' journey to death to an end by making tents,to hold this moment. Christian life cannot just "pitch a tent" - the journey to Jerusalem, and to the glory of death and resurrection must be completed. Presented by world-renowned biblical scholar Rev. The testing of God's Son - 1st Sunday of Lent, Year A

The testing of God's Son: Our Lenten Gospels begin with Matthew's account of Jesus' temptation by Satan. Immediately prior to this passage, a voice from heaven cried out that Jesus is God's beloved Son so Satan tests whether or not this is true. Using Israel's Scriptures, he challenges Jesus: "If you are the Son of God ..." but Jesus rejects the temptations by using the Scriptures against Satan, driving him away. Until heaven and earth disappear - 6th Sunday of the Year

Until heaven and earth disappear: Jesus continues to reflect upon the Laws by reminding everyone of them. He interprets that law with the words, "But I say to you." On the authority of his own person and word he does not deny the value of the Law of Israel, but he asks we look deeper into the reasons for our obedience to God. The Law of Israel calls us to right living, and Jesus' interpretation of that Law brings it to perfection, by asking that we adopt a higher righteousness. Salt of the Earth and Light of the World - 5th Sunday of the Year

Salt of the earth and light of the world: As Jesus begins his famous sermon on the mount, he insists that Christian life must flow from deep internal faith and conviction. When that is the case, the lives of Christians will continue and perfect the function of the Law in Israel. Christian life will bring God's promises to perfection, shining forth like a city on a hill. It will give light and nourishment to the whole world. Presented by world-renowned biblical scholar Rev. Salvation for all the Nations

Salvation for all the Nations: Obedient to the Law of Israel, Jesus' parents present him in the Jerusalem Temple where Simeon, directed by the Spirit proclaims that a new age has arrived. All that Israels Scriptures expected has arrived: light for both Jew and Gentile yet there is more. This child will cause division, and even his Mother will feel the pain as his ministry leads to suffering and death. She does not withdraw from her mission; she treasures these things in her heart, waiting for God's plan for humankind to unfold. Presented by world-renowned biblical scholar Rev. Professor Francis J. Jesus ' ministry begins with power

Jesus ' ministry begins with power: The ministry of Jesus opens as that of John the Baptist comes to a close. His presence in Galilee recalls the promise of the Prophet Isaiah that light now dawns for both Israel and the Gentiles. Jesus proclaims the arrival of God's Kingdom, and shows the irresistible power of the Kingdom as he calls disciples and heals sickness and disease. Presented by world-renowned biblical scholar Rev. The Lamb of God and Son of God - 2nd Sunday of the Year, Year A

The Lamb of God and Son of God: Year A briefly turns away from Matthew's gospel to indicate the importance of John the Baptist in the revelation of Jesus to the world. John the Baptist sees Jesus passing but as the most reliable witness to Jesus, he can look upon Jesus and proclaim that he is the Lamb of God. He perfects the Jewish tradition of an expiatory lamb, making his own the task of freeing God's people from their sins. Such a universal saving action is only possible because of Jesus' oneness with God; he establishes God's way, among us. Presented by world-renowned biblical scholar Rev. Professor Francis J. All that Righteousness Demands - The Baptism of the Lord, Year A

All that Righteousness Demands: All Gospels record Jesus' Baptism; the moment he begins his public messianic ministry. Matthew alone records God has a plan, through Jesus' interactions with John the Baptist. Jesus' first words in Matthew's Gospel sets the agenda: God's will must be done so that all righteousness be fulfilled in Jesus' death and resurrection, the turning point of the ages. A Child Reveals God to the World - The Epiphany of the Lord Year A

A Child Reveals God to the World: Within the Christmas cycle we meet the wise men from the East who are not Jews but know that a King has been born. Their obedient journey brings them to Jerusalem, where they learn that the Scripture says the child will be born in Bethlehem. The wise men represent the world outside Israel who enter God's design, recognise and honour the newborn King. Obedience to the ways of God leads to the revelation of God to the whole world. The Man from Nazareth - The Holy Family - Year A

The Man from Nazareth: The birth of Jesus was accompanied by the murder of innocent Jewish children and a return from Egypt, fulfilling a prophecy that once applied to Moses: "Out of Egypt I have called my Son." However, the family must soon flee once again, fulfilling all the prophecies of the Messiah. Jesus will be known as a Nazarene, the messianic root of David yet his kingdom will not be built in glory but constructed by a wandering and persecuted figure who will be with us till the end of time. The Word became Flesh - Christmas Day Year A

The Word became Flesh: The Prologue to the Gospel of John is among the most profound passages in the Bible. It tells of the pre-existent union of love between God and the Word, the Word's saving gifts of light and life, and our ambiguous response. But the Word is Jesus Christ who dwelt among us, showing us the wonderful presence of God's saving truth. Those who accept that truth become children of God. Swaddling Clothes and a Manger on the Road: Luke's account of a birth of Jesus, as with the appearance of John the Baptist, is fixed in a given time and place. But it is surrounded by the symbols of swaddling clothes, only used for a king, a manger, from which Israel should be nourished, recognition by the simplest of people, the Shepherds, and the heavenly proclamation of God's glory. Jesus is born on a journey, for a journey. Presented by world-renowned biblical scholar Rev. Professor Francis J. Born of the Spirit, the Saviour and the Emmanuel - 4th Sunday of Advent Year A

Born of the Spirit, the Saviour and the Emmanuel: On this final Sunday of Advent we turn to the story of Jesus' birth; it contains a message full of wonderful promise. The puzzlement created by Mary's pregnancy is overcome by the angel's explanation because this child is "of the Spirit". Matthew's story of Jesus' first coming prepares us for a promise that the risen Jesus will make in the very last line of the Gospel: "I will be with you till the end of the ages". Are you the one who is to come? - 3rd Sunday of Advent Year A

Are you the one who is to come? From prison, John the Baptist asks an anxious question of Jesus: is he the one who is to come, or must we wait for another. Jesus responds by announcing that he is the fulfilment of the messianic prophecies. He then praises John the Baptist as the greatest figure to be born of a woman in the era before the coming of the Kingdom. Amazingly, he then points to the incredible dignity of those who have been blessed by entry into the kingdom. They are even greater that John the Baptist - This is indeed "good news." But what John is doing is only a preparation for the fiery immersion into the Spirit-filled baptism that the Jesus will bring; for Jesus is the true master whose sandals John is not worthy to untie. The Two Advents of Jesus - 1st Sunday of Advent, Year A

The Two Advents of Jesus Christmas celebrates the "first coming" of Jesus, in the incarnation of the Son of God. But the Advent Season also focusses upon the second coming of Jesus at the end of time. Advent is a time when we recognise that we live between the two comings of Jesus Christ. Towards the end of Matthew's Gospel, Jesus uses the story of Noah to teach us that the ordinary things go on as we live our Christian lives, rejoicing in what we were given at the first coming of Jesus at Christmas, yet watchful and awake as we wait for the second coming of Jesus. The Sadducees strike back - 32nd Sunday of the Year, Year C

The Sadducees strike back: Having arrived in Jerusalem, Jesus preaches in the Temple. The Sadducees attempt to discredit his teaching, based on their understanding of the Law. Jesus shows them that they neither understand the power of the resurrection, nor the Word of God. Presented by world-renowned biblical scholar Rev. Professor Francis J. Jesus and the tax-collector: As Jesus passes through Jericho, nearing Jerusalem, a tax-collector is prepared to make a fool of himself to see him. The Pharisee and the tax collector - 30th Sunday of the Year, Year C

The Pharisee and the tax collector: Jesus tells his famous parable about a Pharisee who thinks he is a good person, and a tax-collector who is aware of his failures. This situation endures today. We are all called to approach God humbly in prayer, to be given the good gifts that only God can give. Presented by world-renowned biblical scholar Rev. Professor Francis J. Faith and prayer - 29th Sunday of the Year - Year C

Faith and prayer:  Wicked and unjust judges can be persuaded to render justice if it serves their own ends, so how much more would our gracious God give hope and satisfaction to those who turn to him? But we must believe that God actually cares for us. When the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth? Presented by world-renowned biblical scholar Rev. Professor Francis J. Moloney SDB AM, Audio Divina, is a Lectio-Divina styled reflection on the gospel for the Twenty-Ninth Sunday of the Year, Year C. Gospel Reading: Luke 18:1-8 This week's readers are Br. The faith of a Samaritan - 28th Sunday of the Year - Year C

The faith of a Samaritan: Jesus' journey to Jerusalem goes on, and he encounters ten lepers. Asked to fulfill the legal requirements to re-enter Jewish society through the approval of the priest, they set off, only to find that they have been cured while on their journey. But only one "turns back" to Jesus. Presented by world-renowned biblical scholar Rev. Professor Francis J. The Faith of a Servant

The Faith of a Servant: As Jesus' instruction of his disciples nears the end, he focuses upon the need for faith. Jesus instructs them that even with very little faith, they will work miracles. Faithful servants receive everything they have as a gift from God and we are called to administer these gifts as servants and in this way, we will have only done our duty. Presented by world-renowned biblical scholar Rev. Professor Francis J. Moloney SDB AM, Audio Divina, is a Lectio-Divina styled reflection on the gospel for the twenty-seventh Sunday of the Year, Year C. What if someone should rise from the dead?

What if someone should rise from the dead?  Jesus' parable of the rich man and Lazarus is told entirely in the light of Jewish folk-lore. As their situations are reversed, the rich man speaks to Abraham, seeking comfort for himself, and light for his brothers. Abraham refuses both these requests. The gulf between Lazarus, in the bosom of Abraham, and the rich man "in the earth," cannot be crossed. As the parable ends, the challenge of the Christian Gospel emerges: not even someone who rises from the dead can convince those who do not see the sufferings of the poor at their door. Presented by world-renowned biblical scholar Rev. Professor Francis J. Moloney SDB AM, Audio Divina, is a Lectio-Divina styled reflection on the gospel for the Twenty-sixth Sunday of the Year, Year C. Jesus praises the cunning steward

Jesus praises the cunning steward: Today's Gospel is puzzling. The rich man's steward seems to be a thief, yet Jesus praises him. The Jewish law against making interest on a loan lies behind the steward's actions, and the master must praise him for his cunning ability to make friends through his actions. Jesus then turns to his followers and instructs them on the need to use the material possessions of this world honestly in order to be part of the friendship of the children of the light in the Kingdom. There was a man who had two sons

There was a father who had two sons: The God who brings fire on earth in and through Jesus, who sends us to the broken, and asks that we place first things first may seem demanding. But that same God is the Father who gives his children the freedom to make mistakes, and who welcomes them back when they fail. The parable of the father with the two sons ends with the Father out in the dark, trying to save his second lost son. This is the God of compassion made known to us by his son, Jesus of Nazareth. Everything he has is ours. Presented by world-renowned biblical scholar Rev. Professor Francis J. Moloney SDB AM, Audio Divina, is a Lectio-Divina styled reflection on the gospel for the Twenty-fourth Sunday of the Year, Year C. The Cost of Discipleship

The Cost of Discipleship: Jesus' challenging words on discipleship now seem to become more than challenging: they are harsh. Anyone who wishes to be a disciple much reckon their deepest and most intimate relationships, and all their possessions, as lesser than their following of Jesus and the gift of God's reigning presence among us. But as we plan for our ultimate future, it is crucial that we put first things first. Jesus' own life, teaching, death and resurrection show us the way. Presented by world-renowned biblical scholar Rev. Professor Francis J. Moloney SDB AM, Audio Divina, is a Lectio-Divina styled reflection on the gospel for the Twenty-third Sunday of the Year, Year C. Whoever Exalts Himself will be Humbled

Whoever exalts himself will be humbled: Within the setting of one of Luke's favourite scenes, a meal-table, Jesus turns the value-system and the way of judging one another on its head. We expect honours and privileges to be given to the significant people in out society. As Jesus has shown in his loving self-gift for us, this is not the way things work in the kingdom of God. Seeking the lower places will lead to our advancement, and sharing with those who are most in need leads to the greatest of all honours: victory in our eventual experience of death and resurrection. We have heard you preach and shared your table

We have heard you preach and shared your table: When asked who will be saved, Jesus responds that we must work hard to enter the narrow door. Many who regard themselves as having a privileged place because they have shared a meal with Jesus and heard his word might find that the door is shut on them ... because they do not do their best to enter the narrow door. The simple, honest, loving, Christ-like person may well be the least in society, but he or she will be the first in the Kingdom. Those who are socially most significant may be the least. Fire on Earth

Fire on earth: A fire burnt in the life of Jesus, his unconditional acceptance of what his Father asked of him, and it dominated his life- to the Cross. The same fire burns in all of us who follow him. However, as we know, the passionate living of a Christian life of love and self giving, or care and goodness to others, directed by the Word of God and nourished by the Church and our fellow Christians, brings a fire that the world we live in does not want in its midst. We are called to be passionate about our faith, in the midst of division and rejection. Presented by world-renowned biblical scholar Rev. Professor Francis J. Servants of the Servant Messiah

Servants of the Servant Messiah: Jesus instructs his disciples on the need for them to be servants, ready for the return of their servant Messiah, so that he may serve them yet again. We only know that this moment will come. We do not know when that will be. Peter asks to whom this message is directed. Jesus responds by describing the qualities of the good and faithful servant, and the failure of the disciple who forgets to serve as the Master does not return. Those who have received so much are blessed; but their blessing must be seen in the ongoing quality of their service. Presented by world-renowned biblical scholar Rev. Professor Francis J. Moloney SDB AM, Audio Divina, is a Lectio-Divina styled reflection on the gospel for the Nineteenth Sunday of the Year, Year C. Storing up treasure

Storing up treasure: Jesus will not enter into a debate over who owns what. He insists that such concerns miss the point. It is important that we be good stewards of the treasures that come to us through our hard work, and our care for others. But the danger is that we come to thing that our lives are made secure by what we own. We know that this is not true, but we live as if it were. The parable of the unwise rich man drives this point home. Jesus' assessment of those who think and act like this man is that they are fools. Presented by world-renowned biblical scholar Rev. Teach us to pray

Teach us to pray: Our reflection on Luke's Gospel has instructed us to care for others, and to learn from the word of Jesus. Today's Gospel tells us how to respond to our God, who is our Father, as Jesus responded to his Father. This much loved prayer calls us to place God's name and God's kingdom first. How hard that can be. It also asks that we be forgiven as we forgive others. That is risky indeed. Yet Jesus' parables, that follow his teaching the disciples how to pray, promise us that our Father, whose care extends beyond that of all fathers, will hear and respond. To serve, to listen - or both?

To serve, to listen - or both?  The famous episode of Jesus' presence in the house of Martha, accompanied by her sister Mary, must be interpreted in the light of immediately before this account, Luke tells last week's parable: the Good Samaritan. It is crucial to care for others, as does Martha in today's Gospel. But we must also listen to the word of Jesus, as does Mary. Indeed, we are invited to do both: we must have a reason for our good actions, and only by listening to Jesus do we find the Christian motivation for our goodness to others.
