When Unity Feels Hard: A Kingdom Lens on White Shame, Repentance, and Healing

EP 13 - In this episode, I’m answering some of the big, tender questions that often come up in conversations around biblical unity and justice—questions about white shame, how to disciple our kids through cultural confusion, and what it means to navigate politics and repentance through a kingdom lens.Chris Masters, Co-Director of The School of Discipleship in Smyrna, GA, and I talk about how shame doesn’t come from God, how corporate sin affects us all, not just those who caused it, and why sin, not racism, is the real enemy of the global church. I also share personal stories, moments of healing, and practical ways I’ve learned to respond when unity feels hard or even impossible. If you’ve ever asked:How do I teach my kids without passing on shame? What do I do with my pain from past church divisions? How can I repent for something my ancestors or community did? What does biblical justice really look like in today’s world?…then this episode is for you.Connect with the UpRising MinistryA Prayer to Reflect God’s Heart in Hard InteractionsBecome a part of The Needle Mover’s Effect Communityneedlemovers.org/connectJoin Us in Building Beautiful Justice!Partner with us to create more impactful formation resources by becoming a Financial Friend of the Beautiful Justice Podcast. Hope, Groaning, and Justice: Walking Out Biblical Unity

EP 12 - In today’s episode, I’m diving deeper into a recent Q&A session I recorded after teaching a workshop on Biblical justice and the Bible and race. Grounded in Romans 8:18–26, we explore what it means to live in the tension of the "now and not yet"—a world where creation groans, we groan, and yet, we hope. Here are three takeaways I want you to sit with as you listen:Justice begins with formation – Real change doesn't start with good intentions or quick solutions; it starts with allowing God to shape your heart through Scripture and relationships that challenge and grow you.Relationships are the bridge – We can't talk about racial healing without talking about proximity. Building deep, cross-cultural relationships is where transformation takes root and where we begin to look more like the Kingdom. The Holy Spirit helps us when the work feels too hard – Whether you're afraid of saying the wrong thing or feeling discouraged by resistance, the Spirit has given us what we need to keep pursuing unity with love, humility, and hope.I’ll also share practical steps for walking this out in your community, thoughts on nations progressing in racial healing, and a personal prayer to close. No matter your background, I believe God is inviting each of us to live more fully into His justice and unity—your next step might be closer than you think.Download my Prayer of Hope in the Work of ReconciliationBecome a part of The Needle Mover’s Effect Communityneedlemovers.org/connectJoin Us in Building Beautiful Justice!Partner with us to create more impactful formation resources by becoming a Financial Friend of the Beautiful Justice Podcast. When Language Divides, the Spirit Unites

EP 11 - While different languages were part of God’s original design, the confusion of language came as a judgment of sin. But in Acts 2, when the Holy Spirit came, the very first sign of His presence was the ability to understand one another. It was a clear picture of how the Spirit empowers us to live in unity—even across language barriers. In this episode, I reflect on how this call to unity isn’t just for the dominant culture; it’s for everyone who follows the Way of Jesus. We’re all invited to embody humility and love, lifting others before ourselves. Recognize the role of the Holy Spirit in overcoming cultural and language barriers.Reflect on a personal invitation to pursue unity with those who are different from you.Discern how your church can take meaningful steps toward a multi-ethnic, Spirit-led community.I'll also offer two invitations for reflection—one personal, one corporate—and close the episode with a prayer I wrote for a multi-ethnic church, which you can download using the link below.A Prayer for God's Divine Multi-Ethnic ChurchWhat is Biblical Unity? When Language Divides: God’s Original Plan for Communication

EP 10 - In this episode, I’m sharing a personal experience that made me reflect on the power of language in building relationships. During a visit to Cuba, I attended a church service without an interpreter, and let me tell you, it was eye-opening. It made me realize how vital communication is for true connection, especially in the Kingdom of God.Together, we’ll dive into God’s original design for language, starting in Genesis. We’ll see how language was meant to foster unity and purpose, but how sin—and ultimately the Tower of Babel—turned it into a source of confusion and division.I’ll also explore what this means for us today, especially in multi-ethnic church settings. How can we overcome language barriers in worship, fellowship, and ministry? I’ll share practical strategies, from bilingual services to intentional community-building, so we can reflect the beauty of God’s diverse family while pursuing unity in Christ. What is Biblical Unity? Barriers to Biblical Unity - #1: Sin

EP 9 - In my last episode, I focused on defining Biblical unity: the intentional forging of a diverse community committed to mutual value, love, and acceptance. It’s not just an ideal—it’s a way of living, cultivated through spiritual discipline and transformation with Jesus. But if unity is so central to God’s design, why do we struggle so much to experience it?In this episode, I’m diving into what I believe is the greatest barrier to Biblical unity—sin. Sin separates us from dwelling with God and from one another. It’s not people who are the root cause of disunity; it’s the presence of sin in our hearts, communities, and systems. And because unity is a spiritual pursuit, our response to sin must also be spiritual.I’ll share stories that highlight the real challenges of multiracial unity in the church, unpack scriptural truths about the impact of sin, and offer a powerful action step to help us move toward healing and transformation.Join me as we begin this critical conversation—because unity isn’t just about being together. It’s about becoming a people where God’s Spirit dwells.I’ve also created a four-week beginner-level inductive Bible study called What is Biblical Unity? What is Biblical Unity?

EP 8 - Too often, we think of unity as an abstract, feel-good concept, but Scripture teaches us that unity is a practice—a spiritual discipline that requires intention, obedience, and transformation. In this episode, I unpack five key facets of Biblical Unity that help move us from an idealistic view to a real-life application. Episode 8 is the first in my series on unity. The series will examine what scripture says about unity, the barriers that keep us from practicing it, and the spiritual disciplines that cultivate it.I’ve also created a four-week beginner-level inductive Bible study called What is Biblical Unity? Singing the Lord's Song in a Foreign Land with Rachel Jeon

EP 7—In this episode, we explore Psalm 137, a raw and poignant lament born out of the Jewish exile after the destruction of Jerusalem in 586 BCE. As I reflect on this passage, I’m struck by its intensity and honesty—the anguish, rage, and longing expressed in its verses feel deeply human. Together with my guest and Biblical Scholar, Rachel Jeon, we unpack the historical and spiritual significance of this psalm and explore its themes of displacement, identity, and grief. We also discuss how Psalm 137 challenges us to embrace the full spectrum of emotions in our prayers, creating a safe space for our most vulnerable moments before God. Moving from the ancient exile to modern reflections, we explore what it means to live as a cultural or ethnic minority today. This conversation touches on the complex layers of identity, the experience of feeling both at home and displaced, and how the diversity of the U.S. shapes our understanding of culture and belonging. Join us as we navigate these profound questions, celebrating the beauty of scripture’s humanity and God’s deep understanding of His creation.Follow Rachel's OrganizationHouse of HesedBecome a part of The Needle Mover's Effect Communityneedlemovers.org/connectSupport The Beautiful Justice Podcast by becoming a Financial Friend.needlemovers.org/financialfriend

How Do We Walk Out Justice In Our Daily Lives?

EP 6 - How do we know if we're addressing injustices in our city? What does addressing injustice look like practically for the average person? How do we move from recognizing an injustice is happening to taking helpful action?Biblical justice isn’t just an abstract concept; it’s central to God’s character and a call for us to bring His beauty, healing, and wholeness to the brokenness caused by sin—both personal and systemic. Justice is relational, and at its core, it’s about "making things right."Using a fictional case study of a family navigating life in a new church community, together, we’ll talk through the justice facets of:Relational Proximity – Building relationships that honor the image of God in one another and cultivate unity. Relief – Meeting urgent needs that arise from an injustice. Development – Committing to long-term transformation for both the helper and the helped. Reform – Addressing the systemic issues that perpetuate injustice and partnering with others to create meaningful change. These principles are grounded in Scripture and the belief that God invites us into justice work to reflect His kingdom on earth. This work isn’t fast or easy, but it’s worth it.Listen in as I take a simple walk through four facets of Biblical justice and what it looks like to live them out in our communities.

The Justice of Lady Wisdom - A Proverb 31 Chat with Chanda Stegall

EP 5—In this episode, my friend and Bible Teacher Chanda Stegall and I discuss Proverb 31:1–20, a powerful and often misunderstood passage. Starting with the wisdom King Lemuel’s mother shared, we uncover timeless truths about justice, unity, and stewardship. We explore the contrast between using power to serve oneself versus using it to defend the rights of the poor and needy, as instructed in verses 8 and 9.We then transition to the "Ode to a Capable Wife," often seen as an unattainable checklist for women but, in reality, a poetic portrayal of Lady Wisdom in action. From her stewardship of time, materials, and family to her intentional care for the poor, this woman embodies a life shaped by the fear of the Lord.Join us as we unpack how this passage calls us to live lives of purpose, justice, and generosity. Together, let’s ask: How is God inviting us to stretch out our hands to those in need?Learn more about Chanda Stegall and her work at chandastegall.com.Resource Mentioned:Tyndale Bible DictionaryStay connected to The Needle Mover Effect community by visiting needlemovers.org/connect.

God Has a Plan for Your Pain

EP 4 - In this episode, I’m diving into a challenging topic—pain, particularly the kind that comes from relational and emotional wounds. From strained cross-cultural interactions and the isolation of being a minority to personal grief, I explore how God uses these painful experiences to shape our lives and relationships. I share some of my own struggles, including my journey in guiding my children’s ethnic and kingdom identities, and talk about how pain can often make us want to pull back from community and even from God.I unpack the idea that pain has a purpose beyond what we might realize. While the enemy tries to use our pain to disrupt our relationship with God and with each other, God’s plan is to transform our pain to deepen those very same relationships. Through scripture and real-life examples, I look at how God meets us in our suffering, helping us to endure, grow, and heal in ways that bring us closer to Him and into a loving community.

Beyond Human Authority with Emily Simons

EP 3 - In this episode, my friend and guest Emily Simons and I reflect on the limitations of placing hope in political leaders and human systems, pointing out that real solutions to societal issues cannot come solely from human authority. We explore the recurring theme of trusting in God as the ultimate source of justice and salvation, highlighting how Scripture calls out the transient nature of human power. Drawing connections between biblical stories, such as the deliverance of Israel, and modern-day concerns—like the justice system, poverty, and immigration—our scripture exploration emphasizes that while these issues matter deeply, God's authority is the only secure foundation for hope and change. You’ll be reminded that God's involvement spans past, present, and future, providing a comforting assurance of divine sovereignty over all aspects of life.needlemovers.org

What Do Flowers Have To Do With Justice?

EP 2 - At first glance, they may seem unrelated, but flowers have become a powerful symbol of justice, healing, and God's presence in our work. Host Deanna Mason shares a personal story of how a simple bouquet of flowers served as a divinely orchestrated message, encouraging her to continue her mission of unity, justice, and community despite challenges. We delve into the biblical significance of flowers, such as lilies, roses, and olive trees, and how they represent God's care, love, and restoration. Justice, much like tending to flowers, creates the conditions for people to thrive and flourish. This episode invites listeners to consider how small acts, like giving flowers, can build bridges between people, foster connections, and embody God's justice. You’ll explore practical ways to be a good neighbor, incorporate simple justice practices into your life rhythm, and spiritual disciplines such as prayer, scripture study, generosity, rest, and service so that you can make the consistent (but often not easy to find) room needed in your life for spiritual growth. You’ll also receive gentle invitations to heal from the pain–or shame–of oppression-related brokenness, which subversively keeps the church divided. Hit subscribe, and get ready to transform your heart.
