208: WHAT STRATEGY WINS IN CONTEST PREP? PREP PLAYOFFS PART 2
Podbean Caption: Welcome back to Part 2 of the Comp Prep Playoffs! We pick up right where we left off, diving into the quarter finals, semis and ultimately crowning a winner. The people have spoken and zero cardio has been sent packing, so with the final eight locked in, the bracket really heats up. Refeeds versus coaching, high protein versus low stress, quality training versus the meal plan, and carb loading versus food noise control all go head to head before the semis deliver some genuinely tough calls. There are some interesting tangents along the way, including how low protein would need to drop before you accept higher stress, whether food noise actually changes outcomes for disciplined athletes, and whether a great coach essentially renders every other variable redundant. We also celebrate 4 years of BDU, a massive milestone and one we certainly don't take for granted. Thank you to everyone who has been along for the ride. Enjoy! 207: RANKING CONTEST PREP VARIABLES & WHAT MATTERS MOST (PART 1)
Welcome to Episode 207 of the Bodybuilding Down Under podcast! In this episode, we run a contest prep playoffs, putting key bodybuilding strategies head-to-head to determine what actually matters most across a successful prep. We work through a range of common approaches used by competitors and coaches, comparing how different strategies stack up in practice and where they may (or may not) make a meaningful difference. Each matchup is assessed based on real-world application, coaching experience, and overall impact on physique outcomes. This is Part 1 of the playoffs, we move through the opening rounds and quarter finals, with the remaining matchups and final decisions to come in Part 2! 206: HOW TO BECOME AN ELITE ATHLETE FT. RICHARD COLLINS
Welcome to Episode 206 of the Bodybuilding Down Under Podcast! This week we are joined by special guest Richard Collins, a coach whose background spans basketball, football and strength and conditioning across semi-professional and professional sport before transitioning into the bodybuilding and body composition world. Richard breaks down a concept he's developed around categorising athletes as either developmental or performance-based, borrowing directly from how traditional sports structure their coaching at junior versus elite levels, and explains why so many bodybuilders who never played competitive sport may be missing foundational skills around competing, handling losses and staying process-driven. We also dig into what really separates a pro card holder from a truly elite athlete, why composure and emotional regulation are probably the most underrated traits in the sport, and how coaches can build those skills in the off season rather than waiting for stage day to expose the gaps. Richard also touches on the importance of rewarding effort over outcome, not letting athletes attach their identity to a single result, and how the best competitors across all sports tend to thrive on challenge rather than crumble under pressure. 205: HOW TO ACTUALLY PEAK AS A NATURAL BODYBUILDER
Welcome to Episode 205 of the Bodybuilding Down Under Podcast! This week, we are back to break down one of the most talked-about topics in competitive bodybuilding: peak week. The conversation opens with what a good peak week actually looks like and why the goal for most athletes should be a refreshed, recovered physique rather than a last-minute push for extra conditioning. From there, we dive into the key loading strategies, front load, mid load, and back load, covering the pros, cons, and trade-offs of each, and how your condition heading into the week should dictate which approach you deploy. The discussion also explores how the level of detail in a peak week should match the athlete in front of you, from first-time bikini competitors keeping things simple to advanced bodybuilders tracking sodium and potassium to the milligram. We also get into check-in frequency during peak week, how to read tightness and fullness in real time on show day, and the subtle adjustments to carbohydrate and sodium dosing that separate a good peak from a great one. To wrap things up, each of us shares our number one piece of advice for aspiring coaches, from being a good human to finding your unique voice, to spending real time in the game before opening up spots. 204: WHAT IT ACTUALLY TAKES TO WIN A WORLD TITLE FT. CLIFF WILSON
Welcome to Episode 204 of the Bodybuilding Down Under Podcast! This week, we are joined by one of the most respected coaches in natural bodybuilding, Cliff Wilson. With No. 1 and No. 3 in the world at the most recent WNBF World Championships, Cliff's track record speaks for itself. Cliff shares how he got his start in coaching, why he felt disappointed in both the bro science and evidence-based camps early on, and why he eventually stopped debating and decided to let results do the talking. From there, the conversation dives into common contest prep mistakes most coaches don't talk about, the gas pedal analogy for managing intensity across a prep, and why letting bodybuilding consume your entire identity is one of the biggest risks to your success on stage. We also get a detailed look at Cliff's famous rapid backload protocol — how it was born, how it's evolved, and why peak week is far more individualised than most people assume. The episode also covers Cliff's experience coaching Will Tennyson to his pro card, working with Doug Miller, and some incredible stories from the most stacked lineups he's ever witnessed. To wrap things up, Cliff shares his philosophy on handling wins and losses across a career, and why emotional regulation is the mark of a true champion. Enjoy! 203: SHOULD YOU CUT FOOD OR ADD STEPS IN PREP? MANAGING APPETITE LOSS IN A GAINING PHASE & SUPPLEMENT TIER LIST
Welcome to episode 203 of the Bodybuilding Down Under Podcast! This week we open with some updates going into season A and what the final weeks of prep really look like from a coaching perspective. From there, we tackle a listener question: in prep, is it better to run higher calories with higher output, or lower calories with lower output? We break down energy flux, hunger management, step counts, diminishing returns, and why athletes almost always choose more steps over less food. We also look at the other side of the coin, losing appetite during a gaining phase. Is it a red flag or just the cost of doing business? To close out, we run through a full bodybuilding supplement tier list from S to D. 202: DO YOU REALLY NEED ADVANCED TECHNIQUES? VOLUME, FATIGUE & MISTAKES WE ALL MAKE EARLY ON
Welcome to Episode 202 of the Bodybuilding Down Under Podcast! This week we are unpacking some of the most common early training mistakes and how their programming has evolved over the past decade. The conversation kicks off with DY's experience training at a new gym on the Sunshine Coast, featuring full Citadel, Strive and Cybex setups, and what it's like to finally get hands on some of the best equipment in the world. From there, we dive into the meat of the episode, reflecting on the days of running 30+ sets per muscle group and why that style of training eventually had to change. We discuss the interplay between volume and intensity, why not all sets carry equal fatigue, and how strategic exercise selection can allow for more productive volume without blowing out recovery. The discussion also explores a nuanced take on stimulus to fatigue ratio, why it's a useful concept but shouldn't become a reason to avoid training hard as well as how soreness, recovery and performance actually relate once you're years deep into training.

201: PREP GREEN FLAGS, FLEXIBLE DIETNG & LIES ATHLETES TELL THEMSELVES
Welcome to episode 201 of the Bodybuilding Down Under Podcast! In this episode, we kick things off with a recap of the second BDU Lift & Greet before diving into some talking points. We explore where the line sits between self-improvement and self-obsession in bodybuilding, what green flags coaches look for before taking someone into a contest prep, and whether flexible dieting has ultimately helped or hurt athletes. We also get into when to adjust your program during prep, the biggest lies athletes tell themselves throughout the process, the long-term costs of repeated preps, and whether elite bodybuilding and long-term health can genuinely coexist. To wrap things up, we tackle the question of when a coach stops serving the athlete and starts serving the outcome. Coach, exercise scientist, reigning under-90s Queensland IFBB and NABBA Queensland champion, and brand new father. In this episode, Chris breaks down his case for bro splits, using frequency as a tool based on individual physique needs. We get into his relaxed post-show approach, why he monitors biometrics over the scale, and why he doesn't recommend it for everyone. We also cover how his prep approach has evolved since 2013, his take on competing naturally before making the jump to the enhanced side of the sport, and if peptides actually have application in prep. 199: WHAT ATHLETES GET WRONG ABOUT BODYBUILDING FT. DR. MARTIN REFALO
Welcome to Episode 199 of the Bodybuilding Down Under Podcast! This week we are joined by Dr. Martin Refalo, researcher, coach, and new WNBF Australia President for a wide-ranging conversation bridging the gap between science and the stage. Martin shares his own journey from old-school prep in 2016 to evidence-based bodybuilding, and why those two contrasting experiences shaped everything that followed. The conversation covers how to actually interpret and apply research, why looking at one training variable in isolation isn't practical and what his own protein meta-analysis really showed. The boys also dig into how coaches and athletes can identify trustworthy science communicators and why speaking in absolutes is a red flag worth paying attention to. Enjoy! The conversation dives into pre-prep phases, appropriate rates of loss, and the pros and cons of longer versus shorter prep timelines. We also explore when prep truly starts to feel like prep, how athletes typically respond to the dieting condition, and the role of mindset in navigating fatigue and hunger as the weeks progress. Finally, we share our personal experiences with diet foods during prep, why they can sometimes create more problems than they solve, and how simplifying nutrition can often make the entire process smoother. If you’re planning a contest prep or are currently in the middle of one, this episode provides practical insights to help you approach the process more effectively.

Welcome to Episode 197 of the Bodybuilding Down Under Podcast! In this episode, we take a different direction and explore the psychology behind bodybuilding ambition, unpacking the concept of mimetic desire and how our goals may be shaped more by influence and status than we realise. We discuss whether physique goals are truly internal or socially driven, how social media amplifies comparison, and why division standards continue to evolve year after year. The discussion also explores how our beliefs around training volume, food choices, bulking, and recovery have evolved over the years. 192: COMFORT VS. PROGRESS: THE REALITY OF HIGH LEVEL BODYBUILDING
Welcome to Episode 192 of the Bodybuilding Down Under Podcast! This week, we dive into a topic that sits at the core of the bodybuilding experience: discomfort, when it’s necessary, when it’s unavoidable, and when it’s often self-inflicted. The episode opens with a discussion around the idea that bodybuilding should feel hard at times. From brutally demanding training sessions to the realities of long build phases, calorie surpluses, and contest preparation, the boys unpack where discomfort is an essential part of driving adaptation, performance, and long-term physique progress. From there, the conversation becomes more nuanced, exploring whether certain phases of bodybuilding are made unnecessarily difficult through misinformation, poor expectations, or chasing extremes. The boys debate energy surplus size, bodyweight gain, maintenance phases, and whether progress truly requires constant discomfort, or simply better execution over time. The discussion also touches on athlete maturity, exposure to the process, and how experience changes what feels “hard,” alongside considerations around longevity, lifestyle stress, and setting athletes up for sustainable progress rather than short-term extremes. This episode is a grounded, honest look at the difference between productive discomfort and avoidable suffering, and how learning to tell the difference can shape better outcomes in both bodybuilding and life. Welcome to Episode 191 of the Bodybuilding Down Under Podcast! In the first episode of 2026, the boys kick things off with a wide-ranging Q&A discussion covering the realities of contest prep, natural bodybuilding, and where the sport may be heading this year. From lifestyle demands and expectations to placings, enjoyment of the process, and long-term goals, we unpack why contest prep tends to be a make-or-break experience. The conversation then shifts to natural bodybuilding integrity, including discussion around emerging peptides, appetite-modulating drugs, and where the line sits between recovery tools, unfair advantage, and the spirit of drug-tested sport. We also explore supplement quality, third-party testing, and the realities of contamination risk for natural athletes. To wrap up, the boys reflect on major fitness and bodybuilding trends from 2025, make some early predictions for 2026, and discuss individual training priorities, exercise selection, and performance goals moving into the new year. 185: NUTRITION & SUPPLEMENTATION FOR BODYBUILDERS
Welcome to episode 185 of the Bodybuilding Down Under podcast! It’s another two-man episode this week with Jack and DC holding things down while the boys are overseas and we dive into a full Q&A centred around training, injuries, nutrition, and the realities of bodybuilding across seasons. DC gives an update on getting back into training post-hernia surgery, how he’s managing load, and why smart progression can matter more than obsessing over injury fears. We also chat through common hernia misconceptions, the psychology of pain, and why catastrophizing your lifts is the quickest way to make them feel worse. From there, we get into prep nutrition: foods we limit, foods we keep in, why sugar-free products can be a slippery slope, and how micronutrient diversity matters even deep into a diet. We also cover the other side of the spectrum. Off-season eating, digestion, fibre targets, appetite, and why sometimes pushing calories means being strategic (not perfect) with food choices. Finally, we wrap up with our current supplement stacks, what’s actually useful, and some nuanced discussion around things like berberine, creatine, electrolytes, and sleep supplements. 173: MEAL TIMING SCIENCE, PEAK WEEK STRATEGIES, SHOW DAY TIPS & TRAINING AROUND GENETICS
In this week’s episode of Bodybuilding Down Under, the team dives into some of the most practical and evidence-based questions in bodybuilding, covering everything from nutrition timing in mini-cuts to the finer details of peak week and show day execution. We start by discussing meal timing in mini-cuts: does it really matter when you’re in a steep calorie deficit? Jack, Lawrence, and DY unpack the science around protein distribution, pre-workout fueling, and how timing can influence hunger, performance, and muscle retention during short aggressive dieting phases. Next, we break down the critical elements of peak week and show day preparation. DY shares his insights on the importance of structured routines, hydration, and recovery management, while Jack and Lawrence highlight practical strategies like early starts, using checklists, and having reliable carbohydrate sources on hand. We also tackle the challenge of prepping while travelling, contrasting the realities of trying to maintain contest shape overseas versus allowing more flexibility during the off-season. From there, the conversation shifts to training and genetics in bodybuilding. We explore clavicular width, waist size, and arm/lat/quad insertions, discussing how these genetic traits shape physique categories and what can realistically be influenced by training and posing. The hosts debate whether short biceps with long triceps or vice versa create a more favourable aesthetic, and weigh up the trade-offs between high lat and quad insertions. Finally, the team addresses exercise-induced headaches in training, with practical advice on identifying triggers, modifying exercise selection, and knowing when to seek professional help. This episode is packed with science-driven insights and practical strategies, perfect for anyone looking to refine their contest prep, optimise nutrition timing, or better understand how genetics and training interact in bodybuilding. Welcome to episode 159 of the Bodybuilding Down Under podcast! In this week’s episode, we tackle some of the big-picture questions and personal lessons from our time in the sport, from social media’s impact on natural bodybuilding to red flags in coaching, and the one myth we think needs to be buried for good. Here’s what we cover: 🔹 Instagram’s influence on natural bodybuilding – Has it helped the sport grow, or distorted it? 🔹 Choosing the right federation & division – Why this decision can make or break your competitive experience. 🔹 Red flags in online coaching – What to look out for when choosing a coach. 🔹 Bodybuilding myths that need to die – The one we’d eliminate first. 🔹 Advice we wish we followed earlier – Hard-earned wisdom we’d pass on to our younger selves. 🔹 Meal variety during comp prep – How often is too often to change things up? If you’re navigating your own bodybuilding journey or just enjoy hearing real perspectives from inside the sport, this one is full of practical insight and honest reflection.
