With this same humility, Jesus gathered with his disciples in servanthood and compassion, faced his accusers, and hung on a cross with criminals.But today, we focus not on the end of the journey, but the entry into Jerusalem at the beginning of holy week. "HOPE BEGINS in the dark." - Anne Lamott When we’re in seasons of darkness and despair, we can often think; Is there anything that could bring this back to life? And there’s so much in our world to despair about these days - it's got many of us asking; is there any hope? Psalm 130 opens with this honest prayer: “Help, God—I’ve hit rock bottom! …hear my cry for help! Listen hard! Open your ears! Listen to my cries for mercy.” Hope is not only a life and death matter, hope is a life in death matter. Hope finds its greatest challenge, and shines its greatest light, when life stands in the face of death and affirms that God remains trustworthy. Ezekiel is called to prophesy this kind of hope in a valley of dried bones and lost dreams. The psalmist proclaims hope from the depths, as one who waits for the gift of a morning yet to dawn. And Jesus, stricken with a grief born of love, speaks hope into Lazarus’s tomb, calling his friend forth as a sign of God’s glory and of our hope. This Sunday, we'll get reminded that God is famous for resurrecting hopeless situations, for bringing things that seemed totally dead BACK TO LIFE - that’s His specialty! We live in a culture of IMAGE. We spend our lives polishing our "look"; the impressive resume, the glossy social media posts, our latest fit, even the "I’m fine" mask at church.But deep down, there’s a darkness we can't quite navigate. We feel like we’re stumbling in the "valley of the shadow" (like Psalm 23 says), trying to look like we know the way when we’re actually lost.Isn’t it exhausting trying to look like you have it all together when you’re actually stumbling in the dark?We assume we see clearly, that we judge correctly, that we know what success looks like, know who’s “in” and who’s “out.” But we misread people. How often are we tempted to think a certain thing, behavior, or experience will enhance our lives, make things better, soothe the ache, or help us escape, when the opposite ends up being true; we feel worse - guilty and full of shame. NEW YEAR RESOLUTIONS sometimes feel like trying to grab smoke.We make big plans, set some goals, create a chart or two, but somehow it ends up slipping through our fingers. John lived his life as a “warning” to “prepare the way” for Jesus, and this ancient book we’re going to look at these next few weeks, Ecclesiastes, was written 1,000 years before Jesus was born; and it’s a warning; it prepares us to receive Jesus by pointing out the absolute futility and emptiness of everything else.Most of us hate the idea of wasting a day, or an afternoon, or a weekend, or God forbid; your life. Life moves too quick! It’s just a mist! A vapor! A breath! Smoke! "DON'T BE AFRAID"Every time an angel steps into the Christmas story, they always open with that line; "Don't be afraid..." And that's exactly how Zechariah hears it as he encounters his divine moment. It's an assurance of love and care - and it's coupled with the peace of God in the midst of uncertainty.Most of us want peace, but in our noisy, chaotic world, we rarely stay quiet long enough to receive it. We’re living in the loudest generation in history. Constant noise, constant distraction, constant movement. And when life gets that loud, peace feels impossible. THIS SEASON has so much promise and joy to it, but there’s also a variety of emotions we experience. One of those is this nagging feeling of emptiness - the question; “Is this really it? GRATITUDE changes our perspective.As we look ahead to Christmas and the holidays, it's a great time to reflect on all that God has given us and to consider how He would want us to give in generous ways. What does it look like, practically?This first section of chapter 13 will challenge us in so many ways. It will remind us that JESUS IS BETTER than being selfish, in every area of our lives - that giving, not getting, is what brings real freedom. We have so much to celebrate as Branches crosses the three-year mark of meeting together every Sunday! Wow - what awesome things God has done! Could you even count the stories? It's like a tidal wave of Jesus' love and grace changing lives everywhere we look.This Sunday, we take some time to reflect and celebrate on these amazing three years together (with three faith-stories!), and we'll be challenged and encouraged to look ahead for more of what God has in store. Chapter 12 of Hebrews will remind us that God is building an "unshakable Kingdom" in and through us. It's not promised to be easy, though. There's no Lazy-Boy seats in the house; this is a long-distance race - a marathon. But it's WORTH IT!Jesus is better than sitting around in lazy comfort. He's got a mission and purpose for us all. FAITH in our culture’s view is something you acquire and develop within yourself. You know; “...gotta have faith, faith, faith!” Or, how about this cliche in positive thinking: “Trust in yourself, have faith!”But God invites us to a totally different reality; faith not in ourselves, but in something -or someone- outside of ourselves; faith that comes from Him as a gift.When we doubt, we’re welcomed through the grace of God to bring Him our doubts and ask for His gift of faith to strengthen us. It’s not important how much faith you have (‘a mustard seed’ is all it takes!), the important thing is what you’re placing your faith in.Remember, JESUS IS BETTER than giving up!"Faith, is the firm foundation under everything that makes life worth living." (Hebrews 11:1)This Sunday, we arrive at Chapter 11 of Hebrews, the great “Hall of Faith”; a list of inspiring heroes, examples to look up to when we feel like quitting (which members of our church read aloud from their seats - and microphones couldn't pick up unfortunately). WE CAN BE TEMPTED to give up on faith when doubts and questions swirl around us. We can be tempted to give up on love when disappointment and rejection knock us down. We can be tempted to give up on hope when our situations are confusing and difficult. Whether you're a Christian, or just checking out church for the first time, you know that angels have actually gotten a lot of press throughout the centuries; statues, paintings, tattoos. In fact, the Devil himself was an angel at one time - one who rebelled (interesting story!). Humboldt County is a very “spiritual place". There’s all sorts of spiritual entities or transcendental experiences offered around here - just take a look at your favorite coffee shop bulletin board! THERE'S ANOTHER JUSTIN in the house...but this one's from Texas!Justin Gambino headlined Unity in the Community last Saturday AND, he agreed to be with us the next day; this Sunday morning!Raised in a Christian home, Justin Gambino rebelled in high school and was arrested for theft at the age of 18. His judge gave him the option of military service, and at 19, he began an 8 year enlistment in the Navy. While serving in Iraq, Justin was asked to lead worship on base, renewing his love of music. Upon returning stateside, he battled PTSD and anger issues, leading him to depression and despair. At the bottom, Justin cried out to God from his apartment floor, and a new journey of redemption, hope and purpose began. I sidestepped street-riots and water cannons in Sri Lanka with him, navigated washed out roads in Ecuador, and led worship as we walked into a primitive prison in Costa Rica to share the freedom found in Jesus! WE ALL UNDERSTAND the concept of gardening; we get out what we put in.In this last Sunday of the "Good & Beautiful Community" series, we consider once again this truth. And God uses it (and the analogy of sowing and reaping) in Paul’s letter to the Corinthians to talk about generosity: 2 Corinthians 9:5-6 reads, “So I thought I should send these brothers ahead of me to make sure the gift you promised is ready. But I want it to be a willing gift, not one given grudgingly. Remember this—a farmer who plants only a few seeds will get a small crop. But the one who plants generously will get a generous crop.”Giving, practicing generosity, identifying needs and meeting those needs with our resources, can be like gardening the perfect plot of land in all the best ways! THE VETS HALL STEPS have seen a LOT these last three years! There are so many memories to reflect on, God-enounters, and changed-lives walking up and down those steps. This Sunday will be our LAST time to worship, sing, pray, and learn together at this historic and special location.We'll take time to recognize the veterans for their service and hospitality to us, and we'll let their service inspire us once again to the service each of us is called to in following Jesus. Jesus came to SERVE, and in connecting with Him, receiving His Spirit, power, and friendship, we in turn get to be people who serve others and make a difference in our world.Our grand adventure as a Church is one of unselfishness generosity, of giving ourselves away so others can get blessed! BEING RICH AND FAMOUS was my ultimate goal in life! At the Arcata High Talent Show audition, my guitar playing demonstration was finally cut-off after ten minutes by an exhausted group of judges!Whether it's through fame, attention, manipulation, debt, or outsmarting the competition to win at all costs, there’s a big part of us that selfishly desires to have our own way; to get what we want - all the world can offer us! The "world" being our surrounding culture’s value system apart from God.But there's a problem with that, and James spells it out in Chapter 4; “Don’t you realize that friendship with the world makes you an enemy of God?"Whoa! What do we do? How should we then live? How to: Life?Could it be that depending on God in honesty and humility, rather than pride, arrogance, or even self-confidence is what truly leads us to wholeness? WORDS GIVE LIFEIsn’t that true? I can remember how powerful words were as I was growing up, words that were spoken to me, or words that I just overheard - that shaped me, changed me. I can also remember words I wished I would have said, and words I wish I could take back or say differently… don’t we all?Mother's Day gives us a poignant opportunity to consider how we are all "life-givers" to those around us. Are our words giving life to the loved ones we care about? The third chapter of James reminds us of the power of words and ends with this poetic picture; "...those who are peacemakers will plant seeds of peace and reap a harvest of righteousness.”Branches, let’s plant seeds of peace! Let’s be that kind of people!
