    Quiet hope | Matthew 1:18-25

Send us Fan MailAs Christmas approaches, it’s easy to rush ahead to the familiar themes of joy and celebration. But Advent asks us to slow down — to wait, to prepare, and to hope.In this sermon, we focus on the often-overlooked figure of Joseph, the quiet, righteous man through whom God prepares the way for the Son of David. We’ll reflect on what Advent hope really looks like, and how God keeps his promises, honours the hopeful, and works through ordinary faithfulness to bring salvation. Repent on repeat | Matthew 3:1-12

Send us Fan MailThis week for the second Sunday in Advent, Phil takes us into the wilderness with John the Baptist and the unsettling but life-giving call to repentance. We explore what it means to prepare for Christ’s coming—not with fear or self-righteousness, but with a humble, honest, and sincere heart.Along the way we’ll hear how repentance frees us from presumption, opens us to God’s truth, and leads us into a life that’s not performed for others but shaped quietly by the Spirit. If you’ve ever wrestled with whether your faith is “real,” or wondered how to keep going when you feel like you’re starting again, this sermon offers hope. Advent doesn’t ask us to prove ourselves—it invites us to make room for the One who comes with grace. Famous last words | 2 Timothy 4:6-22

Send us Fan MailWhat does it take to live a good life? Is it possible to live in a way that means we'll look back and say, 'I did everything I was put here to do'? In these final verses of 2 Timothy, Paul seems to have plenty of unfinished business. And yet he also confidently says that he has fought the good fight, kept the faith, and is finishing the race. How is it possible to hold these two things together? Join us as we explore how to finish well - no matter how far in life we still have to go. Practice makes proficient | 2 Timothy 3:14-4:5

Send us Fan MailIn cricket, a batter has less than half a second to decide what to do with a 140km/h ball. No time to think. Only muscle memory. Only reflex.Paul says discipleship often works the same way. This week we’re in 2 Timothy 3:14–4:5, where Paul reminds Timothy—and us—that Christianity isn’t a set of ideas to nod along with, but an apprenticeship under Jesus. And every apprentice needs practice. Serious practice. The kind of formation that shapes our instincts, our reflexes, our split-second choices. We’ll look at why Scripture is the Spirit’s tool for training us in righteousness, why we need real mentors and not just digital discipleship, and why every generation tries to reinvent Christianity into something easier, softer, or more comfortable.Tune in as we explore what that means for your prayer life, your family relationships, and your daily walk with Jesus. Haters gonna hate | 2 Timothy 3:1-13

Send us Fan MailIn this episode, we look at one of the most confronting but clarifying passages in the New Testament: Paul’s warning to Timothy that the “last days” — the time between Jesus’ victory at the cross and his return — will be brutal, deceptive, and distressing. Why? Because evil is defeated, but it hasn’t stopped fighting. We’ll explore why our culture’s obsession with self-love leaves us distorted, how love of money and pride twist our behaviour, and why family breakdowns and cultural chaos shouldn’t shock us. And we’ll talk honestly about the dangers inside the church — about counterfeit godliness, manipulation, and the harm done when appearance matters more than repentance. But Paul doesn’t leave us anxious. He lifts our eyes to something stronger: the last days may be fierce, but for those who belong to Christ, they are ultimately harmless. The war is already won. The King is already risen. And he will return.Join us as we walk through 2 Timothy 3 and learn how to stay alert, stay steady, and stay confident in the only One who can rescue, vindicate, and keep his people to the end. Watch out for word games | 2 Timothy 2:14-26

Send us Fan MailWhen life gets complicated, it’s tempting to make faith simpler by changing the words — to make the gospel sound more believable. But in 2 Timothy 2, Paul warns that “wrangling over words” doesn’t save the gospel — it ruins it. In this message, Phil Rademaker explores how redefining the gospel empties it of power — and why we don’t need to rescue Christianity because it already has a Saviour. Eyes on the prize | 2 Timothy 2:1-13

Send us Fan MailWhen life gets noisy, it’s easy to forget why we started following Jesus in the first place. In 2 Timothy 2, Paul reminds us to keep our eyes on the prize:to remember who we are—soldiers, athletes, farmers; to remember why we signed up—because Jesus first loved us; and to remember what he promised—life, purpose, and a share in his glory. In this message, Phil Rademaker explores how endurance, focus, and love keep us steady in the long obedience of faith—especially when we’re tired, distracted, or tempted to take shortcuts. Don't be ashamed | 2 Timothy 1:8-18

Send us Fan MailIn this episode, Phil unpacks 2 Timothy 1:8–18 and challenges the idea that faith is a private matter. From Caesar’s Rome to modern-day Canberra, declaring that Jesus is Lord has always been a public act — one that inevitably clashes with the powers that be.Paul writes to Timothy from prison, urging him not to be ashamed of the gospel or of those who suffer for it. Phil explores how shame still operates today — not through persecution, but through social pressure, comfort, and distraction. While these pressures can seem overwhelming, God makes a way for us to resist. In cross and resurrection, Jesus overturns our categories of honour and shame. This episode invites listeners to see the gospel not as a private comfort, but as a public allegiance — and to stand unashamed in a world that prizes reputation over loyalty to Christ. Fire up | 2 Timothy 1.1-7

Send us Fan MailIn today’s message, we’re looking at 2 Timothy chapter 1, where Paul reminds a young and timid Timothy that the Great Commission comes with a Great Provision — the Holy Spirit, who gives us power, love, and self-discipline.Whether you’re feeling confident or hesitant in faith right now, this passage reminds us that God gives us exactly what we need to carry out his call. I'll live with you | Exodus 25-40

Send us Fan MailExodus chapters 25–40 are all about the tabernacle—the tent God asked his people to build in the wilderness. At first glance, it can seem like endless details about curtains, lampstands, and priestly robes. But in fact, these chapters reveal the very heart of God’s plan for the world. The tabernacle shows us that God doesn’t stand at a distance. He moves in. He sets up his home with his people. In this sermon we’ll explore three movements of that story: Eden in a tent, Eden in Christ, and Eden in us. And we’ll see how all of this points us forward to the day when Eden will be everywhere, when heaven and earth are fully reunited in Jesus. So let’s listen together, and be reminded: God moves in, so we can move closer. The Invitation | Exodus 19-20

Send us Fan MailA mountaintop experience. A deeply spiritual moment. A meaningful, tangible experience of God. These are not what most of us think of when we think of the 10 commandments. And yet, this is what God was inviting the Israelites to when he gave them. What is the point of the commandments? What, if anything, do they have to do with experiencing God's presence? Learning to live free | Exodus 16

Send us Fan MailWe live in a culture that never stops—always hustling, always busy, always on. In Exodus 16, Israel faced the same temptation in the wilderness: to act as if survival depended on constant striving. But God gave them manna, not just to feed them, but to teach them how to be free. In this sermon, we see how trust in God breaks the chains of control, how His daily provision trains us in true freedom, and how rest in Christ releases us to live as His children.  Check out our website at christchurchhawker.org.auFind us on Facebook at facebook.com/ChristChurchHawkerACTVisit us at 196 Hawker Pl, Hawker ACT 2614

    I thought we had a deal | Exodus 14

Send us Fan MailWhen we read the book of Acts, it feels like the glossy brochure for Christianity—miracles, healing, thousands coming to faith. But then we look at our own lives, and it’s not quite the same. Following Jesus often feels confusing, costly, even dangerous. In this sermon from Exodus 14, we see that redemption isn’t just about being rescued—it’s about being remade. God doesn’t only clear obstacles out of our path; he leads us through the waters, through places that feel like death, to form us into people who trust him.Along the way, we’ll discover the false “deals” we often assume God has made with us, and how he patiently drowns them so that we can find real freedom in Christ. Marked with the blood of the lamb | Exodus 11-12

Send us Fan MailIn this episode of Learning to Live Free, we open Exodus 11 and 12 and come face to face with the magnitude of God’s salvation. Pharaoh’s stubborn pride has turned Egypt into a land of death, and the plagues show that this is where human resistance to God always leads. Yet in the midst of judgment, God provides a way of escape: the blood of a substitute lamb. And as Israel departs from Egypt, God shows that salvation is not just about avoiding death, but about stepping into a brand new life with Him.Join Phil as he unpacks how the Passover points us to Jesus — the true Lamb of God — who takes our place, covers us with His blood, and calls us to leave behind sin’s Egypt for freedom in Him. What kind of God is this? | Exodus 7:8-25

Send us Fan MailCrises tend to reveal a person's character. When push comes to shove, we see who is selfish, who is calm, who lashes out, and who is sacrificial. The plagues of Egypt are a crisis, manufactured by God and they reveal a lot about his character. We see that he is pure in his justice, patient in his warnings, and full of pity for all people.  Check out our website at christchurchhawker.org.auFind us on Facebook at facebook.com/ChristChurchHawkerACTVisit us at 196 Hawker Pl, Hawker ACT 2614

Couldn't he just snap his fingers | Exodus 4:27-6:13

Send us Fan MailWhy is salvation such a long, messy, complicated story? Surely if God wanted to, he could snap his fingers and, hey presto, no more Pharaoh, Egypt or slavery. But that's not what happens. Likewise, if you've ever tried to change sinful behaviours, you may have felt trapped and wondered why? Why doesn't God change us instantly? In this sermon Phil explores the reasons for God's slow and deliberate salvation, and why it's good news for anyone who has ever felt stuck.   Check out our website at christchurchhawker.org.auFind us on Facebook at facebook.com/ChristChurchHawkerACTVisit us at 196 Hawker Pl, Hawker ACT 2614

God hears, God rescues, God sends | Exodus 2:11-4:17

Send us Fan MailHere I am, send someone else! Moses, like so many characters in the bible, is an unlikely hero. When given every assurance that God is powerful, willing, determined and dead set on rescuing his people, Moses tries to find every reason to avoid the part God has for him in the Exodus. Yet, it's through this faltering, failing human being that God announces his rescue. Which is great news for anyone who's felt unsure if they're up to the task of announcing God's even greater rescue - the gospel of Jesus. This sermon is all about how being sent to tell people about God's salvation is good news, even for people like Moses, you and me. Hope in the shadows | Exodus 1:1-2:10

Send us Fan MailIn this opening talk from our series on Exodus, we step into a story that doesn’t start with victory—but with pain, oppression, and silence. Israel is stuck in Egypt, suffering under a Pharaoh who sees God’s blessing as a threat. It’s a world that feels eerily familiar. We explore how Exodus gives us a pattern: that when God begins to bless, opposition always follows. And yet—this same pattern reveals something deeper. That God doesn't waste the suffering of his people. In fact, the very places of pain often become the places where God begins his rescue. If you've ever asked, "Where is God when it hurts?" — this message is for you. Singing | Church unpacked

Send us Fan MailWhy do we sing in church? It’s not just tradition — and it’s definitely not about performance. In this episode, we explore the deep, biblical reasons Christians sing together: to worship God, to let the gospel dwell in us, and to serve one another. From the Psalms to Paul’s letters, singing has a unique power to move our hearts and shape our faith. Communion | Church unpacked

Send us Fan MailHave you ever believed something in your head but struggled to feel it in your heart? In this week’s message, Phil explores how Holy Communion is God’s answer to that disconnection.Drawing on the Passover, the early church in Corinth, and the wedding feast still to come, this sermon unpacks how Communion reconnects us—to the cross where Jesus rescues us, to each other in a divided and lonely world, to God who gives himself to us, and to hope when we’re weary and longing for more. It’s not just a symbol. And it’s not a payment we offer to God. It’s a meal where God speaks to our whole selves—head, heart, and hands.Join us as we rediscover Communion as truth you can touch. Peace be with you | Church unpacked

Send us Fan MailWhat if the most radical thing you do at church this week… is shake someone’s hand?In this sermon, we unpack the greeting of peace—not as a throwaway moment or a liturgical stretch break, but as a powerful, gospel-driven act of reconciliation. We’ll explore how Jesus’ first post-resurrection words—“Peace be with you”—aren’t just comforting, they’re commissioning. You’ll hear why real peace isn’t a vibe, it’s a victory. Why saying “peace be with you” might matter more than a protest or a mission trip. And why this small moment in church could be one of the most compelling signs of God’s kingdom in a divided world. Praying together | Church upacked

Send us Fan MailJesus prayed often. He prayed alone, with others, at night, during the day, before major events in his ministry. His very last words were a prayer. In short, Jesus' life was saturated with prayer. When his disciples finally ask him to teach them to pray, what he says is remarkably short but it is packed with meaning. It's also full of 'us' language. In this sermon, Fiona unpacks why we pray together at church and why, when we can use all sorts of words for prayer, the Lord's prayer is still our ultimate guide.  Check out our website at christchurchhawker.org.auFind us on Facebook at facebook.com/ChristChurchHawkerACTVisit us at 196 Hawker Pl, Hawker ACT 2614

    Preaching | Church unpacked

Send us Fan MailIf the bible is God's word, why do we need to hear another word when we gather as a church? Since the earliest days of the church, preaching has been a central part of worship but what exactly is it supposed to do? Is it just explaining the bible? Is it a personal reflection? Or is it just the chance for the minister to enjoy the sound of their own voice? The bible has an answer, and it's none of the above. As we'll see, the bible's insistence on preaching is based on the conviction that Holy Spirit uses faithful preaching to speak his word into the lives of his people where they are. Preaching, when it springs from God's word, is God addressing us here and now.  Check out our website at christchurchhawker.org.auFind us on Facebook at facebook.com/ChristChurchHawkerACTVisit us at 196 Hawker Pl, Hawker ACT 2614

Public Bible reading | Church unpacked

Send us Fan MailIn an age of noise, splintered opinions, and endless commentary, is there still power in simply reading the Bible aloud together? In this episode, we explore the ancient yet vital practice of public Scripture reading and why it remains central to Christian worship. Drawing on passages like 1 Timothy 4, John 5, and Nehemiah 8, we’ll see how this practice reminds us that God still speaks, has the final word, and shapes both our story and our spiritual appetite. We’ll reflect on how communal Bible reading pushes back against cultural fragmentation and recentres us on truth, unity, and grace. Whether you’ve grown up hearing the Bible in church or are just beginning to explore faith, this episode invites you to listen afresh to God's word. Rock solid investments | Matthew 6:19-34

Send us Fan MailMoney has a powerful influence over our lives, often in ways we don’t recognize. It shapes our decisions, relationships, and even our sense of security. Many assume greed is only about wanting more, but it can also show up as anxiety, overwork, or an obsession with financial stability. In the sermon on the mount, Jesus calls out money as an idol, promising happiness and control but never truly satisfying. It deceives us by making us believe we are in control, when in reality, it drives our fears and desires. We justify our financial choices without questioning whether money is shaping our hearts.True freedom comes when we stop treating money as our ultimate security and invest our hopes in God instead. In this episode we consider how Jesus makes that possible, even if money's empty promises have captured our hearts Check out our website at christchurchhawker.org.auFind us on Facebook at facebook.com/ChristChurchHawkerACTVisit us at 196 Hawker Pl, Hawker ACT 2614

The honour trap | Matthew 6:1-18

Send us Fan MailWe in the West don't do honour and shame, we're a guilt and innocence culture. Or so we've been told. It seems like common sense until we take a look at how much time we spend chasing likes, retweets, and even just kudos from the people around us. Many of us care about what other people think of us, and we know that this can be a trap. So, the answer is simple right? Just stop caring what other people think, right? Give up on the whole honour/shame game and be free to live your life dancing like nobody's watching. Except that if you do that, chances are you'll go viral for all the wrong reasons. It turns out Jesus has a better answer, a way for us to find the honour we seek, and to leave behind the shame we carry. And it's all about following his path. Making peace | Matthew 5:33-48

Send us Fan MailWelcome to today’s episode, where we dive into one of Jesus’ most radical teachings from the Sermon on the Mount—his call to peace in the face of conflict. We all experience conflict—at home, at work, online. The natural response? Fight back or walk away. But Jesus offers a third way: a path of honesty, dignity, and grace that transforms relationships and communities. We explore:🔹 Showing your hand – Jesus calls us to be truthful in our words and motives (Matthew 5:33-37). Honesty builds trust and prevents manipulation.🔹 Raising your head – When mistreated, Jesus doesn’t tell us to cower or retaliate. Instead, he calls us to stand firm, refusing to be degraded while rejecting revenge (Matthew 5:38-40).🔹 Redefining your friends – More than just passive resistance, Jesus teaches us to actively reclaim power through unexpected generosity and love, even for our enemies (Matthew 5:41-48).We also look at real-life examples, including the civil rights movement, and how we can live out these principles today—in our workplaces, families, and daily interactions.Jesus' way of peace is active, creative, and powerful. How to fix a broken heart | Matthew 5:27-32

Send us Fan MailWelcome to today’s episode, where we dive into a cultural mantra: Follow your heart. It’s everywhere—on posters, in movies, in self-help books. But is it true? Does your heart really know the way to the Good Life?Jesus challenges that idea in the Sermon on the Mount. He says our hearts can actually deceive us, leading us into patterns that harm both ourselves and others. He pinpoints two symptoms—wandering eyes and broken relationships—that reveal the deeper problem: a heart that’s not aligned with God’s vision for human flourishing. But here’s the good news: Jesus isn’t just diagnosing the problem; he’s offering a cure. And it’s not about extreme self-discipline or cutting out distractions—it’s about something far more radical.Join us as we explore what it means to truly see others as God does, and how Jesus’ invitation to a new heart leads us into real, life-giving relationships. If you've ever wrestled with the tension between desire, culture, and faith, this episode is for you. More righteous than righteous | Matthew 5:17-25

Send us Fan MailWhat if simply getting angry could put you in the same danger as murder? What if someone a fool could make you guilty before God? Sounds extreme, right? But in Matthew 5:17-26, Jesus raises the bar on righteousness—way higher than we’d expect.Jesus said, "Unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.” The Pharisees were the most devout rule-followers of their time—so what hope do we have? Here’s the game-changer: Jesus didn’t come to abolish the law but to fulfil it. The righteousness we need isn’t something we achieve—it’s something we receive. Through His life, death, and resurrection, Jesus gives us His perfect righteousness. It’s not about religious performance; it’s about grace. In this sermon, Paul Sampson explores what all this means for us today.  Check out our website at christchurchhawker.org.auFind us on Facebook at facebook.com/ChristChurchHawkerACTVisit us at 196 Hawker Pl, Hawker ACT 2614

The Good Life | Matthew 5:1-16

Send us Fan MailWhat does it really mean to live the good life? In this episode, we dive into Jesus’ radical definition in the Sermon on the Mount. While the world chases wealth, comfort, and success, Jesus says the truly blessed are the poor, the mourning, the meek, and the persecuted. We explore how the Beatitudes flip our expectations upside down and show us that the good life isn’t about circumstances—it’s about being part of God’s kingdom, even in the midst of struggle. But how do we hold onto this life? Jesus calls us to be salt and light—to stay distinct in our faith and let it shine in the world. We share real-life stories of Christians living this out, from Nigeria to London to our own church community, and reflect on how we can embody Jesus’ vision today.Join us as we rethink success, embrace the good life Jesus offers, and seek to be a people shaped by his kingdom. Send us Fan MailHave you ever been reading the bible and come away scratching your head?
