Disco F*cks! You've probably heard the phrase "disco sucks!" thrown around when people start talking about disco or macho rock culture from the 70's. Disco is rooted in black and latinx culture and music, and was huge in gay nightclubs, so, the hatred of disco was wrapped up in racism and homophobia. The youth are leading climate action globally, and right now all eyes are on Greta Thunberg following her address to UN climate action summit. Thunberg is right to centre Indigenous activists in the movement, as they have been raising these issues and mobilizing for years before the world was paying attention. I also talk about Enby Party, a music label, festival, and collective by and for non-binary artists.

On August 4th, an all queer lineup of local bands are playing at Red Gate for Pride! All through the month of July I've invited artists playing Pride at Red GAYte to take over the show with their playlists. Episode 13 is the Trolls! Sled Island Music Festival happens in Calgary this week! This week's episode features bands playing the fest.

RIP Marsh P. Johnson, 1945-1992This year marks 50 years since the Stonewall Riots in NYC, widely acknowledged to have kicked off the modern LGBTQIA2S+ rights movement. I was in Brooklyn and NYC at the beginning of June, and was lucky to see some of the art, exhibition, and history honouring 50 years of Pride. Marsha P. Johnson is famous for her participation in the Stonewall riots, and her activism in the LGBTQ community for the entirety of her short life. She is quoted talking about her activism and presence in the LGBTQ+ community as saying "What's the point of complaining? It don't get you nowhere. I may be crazy but that don't make me wrong. Nobody promised you tomorrow." This quote is on my mind heading into Pride in Vancouver. We have so much to be grateful to our queer elders for, and so much left to fight for. Starting out with a shout out to my own Mom, but keeping in mind that biological Mom's are not always the Mom's we need. So sending love to all of the "mom's" who are siblings, friends, aunties, grandmas, Trans or Non-binary parents and caregivers, and everyone in between.

Bands to watch at Sled Island Music Festival!

This week it's all about new music and MUSIC WASTE! Started in 1994 in response to a more corporate Vancouver festival called “Music West”, Music Waste is entirely DIY, volunteer run, and features over 70 local bands. In the last few years the way the festival is organized has changed to make sure they’re including a broader range of genres and voices, though the majority is still punk, indie, rock, pop, and electronic. The festival takes place at venues across Vancouver from June 7-10th, with showcases of DIY Art, Poetry, and for the first time EVER, DRAG Waste! It’s hands down my favourite event in the city, check it out.

May 17th is International Day Against Transphobia, Biphobia and Homophobia, so this episode is extra queer and features music ONLY by LGBTQ+ folks. Stay safe out there, flamers
