Benedict & Discernment
Living Discernment through the lens of prayer and community is the formation theme for GSE in 2026. To give some context for our theme we offer you, Listening, Thinking and Discernment – The Old and the New, a presentation by Dr Carmel Posa sgs. This deep engagement in understanding discernment was a keynote from our 2025 Triennial Conference, and is the perfect way to launch our year. Drawing on Chapter 3 of the Rule of Benedict, Carmel explores the practice of giving and receiving counsel in community, with discernment described as “the mother of all virtues.” Rooted in the monastic tradition and understood as a gift of the Spirit, discernment is presented not as a private exercise, but as a shared, relational practice that calls for humility, patience, and deep listening with the ear of the heart. In a world that often seems to have forgotten how to think—let alone listen—this keynote offers a timely and challenging reflection. What wisdom might Benedict’s teaching offer us as we journey into the future? As GSE celebrates its 15th anniversary in 2026, it is a question worth asking now more than ever.

Benedictine Listening
As 2022 begins to find its rhythm this bonus episode, is something completely different, giving you the opportunity to pause and truly listen with the ear of the heart and be open to what you are being called to respond to. Find a quiet place and give yourself permission for 10 minutes to retune your listening heart. Listening to God and listening to our neighbour are interrelated! When we make space to listen receptively to our God, we find our hearts gradually softened and converted into the ‘good soil’. We are thus made able to be attentive, to notice and to hear God speak in Scripture and in the ‘neighbour’ we encounter in our daily life. We are also made able to respond. As well, when we are attentive to our neighbour, in love or in listening, we hear God say, ’You do it to Me’. There is a wonderful double meaning in the urgent plea of Benedict ‘ to put the love of Christ before all else'. Are we being invited to give a eucharistic ‘AMEN’ to both the Divine Christ and to the Body of Christ? I find this deep connection between loving and listening to be powerful! - Carol Tomlinson sgs
