"Pride is the posture of the devil." As we continue our series on Luke 14, we work through Jesus's parable about the consequences of pride and the recognition of humility. Pride is a perilous condition and a barrier to grace, as Scripture repeatedly tells us: "God is opposed to the proud, but gives grace to the humble."

What happened when the Pharisees invited Jesus to lunch? How does He turn this meal into a lesson about compassion & self-righteousness? Luke 14 confronts us with the peril of clinging to extra-biblical commandments, as we're asked whether we see our own bondage to trusting in everything we have (or haven't) done.

"All of these stories drive us to the fact that in the Kingdom, I recognize, as a very core principle of my citizenship, that I am forgiven of a magnitude of sin that I cannot comprehend." In Luke 15, we witness God welcoming sinners and showing generosity to the undeserving. In the same chapter, we find the Old Testament story of Jacob & Esau -- a story Jesus uses to teach us about compassion, forgiveness, and acceptance.
