You don’t have a networking problem

Most people think they need to get better at networking.Maybe more events, conversations or connections. This should do the trick right? NOPE. That’s not the problem. You don’t have a networking problem. You have a strategy problem.I recently recorded this ConquerCast episode with Stacy Brooks, and after it ended, three things became very clear to me.If you get these right, your entire approach to networking, business development and even career growthchanges. NETWORKING IS A STRATEGIC SPORT: If you’re showing up to events just to “see what happens”… you’re already behind.YOUR REFERRALS ARE YOUR REPUTATION: Every time you introduce someone… you’re putting your name on the line.STOP COLLECTING CONTACTS. START BUILDING LEVERAGE: A big network doesn’t mean a strong network. You don’t need 50 weak connections. You need a few strong ones.Listen to this episode of ConquerCast through this lens, you’ll hear it differently.Subscribe now to receive weekly leadership development and growth lessons right to your inbox. Holistic leadership isn't soft!

In this episode of ConquerCast episode, I sat down with Dr. Manjeet Prewal (owner of Kartar Health) to unpackwhat holistic leadership actually looks like in real life. Here’s one core idea that stayed with me:💥 When leaders don’t do the inner work, it shows up in how they lead others .. especially in their energy, presence, and decision-making.Chronic stress doesn’t stay hidden. It leaks into decisions, tone or reactions when things go wrong, which ultimately leads to burnout! We talked about, why:self-leadership isn’t selfish.filling your cup isn’t optional.bringing your best self to work matters more than bringing your full self. One of my favourite moments was redefining what it means to be “alpha”.💥 Not dominance, ego or beating your chest. But self-awareness, which is rooted in emotional intelligence! This conversation challenges how we think about strength, success, and sustainable leadership.Learn more about Kartar Health here:Facebook LinkedInInstagramSubscribe now to receive weekly leadership development and growth lessons right to your inbox. Canadian healthcare: Leading under pressure

In this episode, Dr. Ravinder Singh, General and Minimally Invasive Surgeon at North Bay Regional Health Centre, walks through what leadership looks like in surgical environments.Whether it’s building trust with patients to guiding teams through crisis and making decisions when resources are limited. We talked about accountability, communication, patient-centered care, and what’s actually wrong with our healthcare system.Hot topic right? And yes, a few bro-in-law moments made it in too .. mainly gym talk! Great leadership under pressure comes back to clarity, humility, and keeping the main thing the MAIN THING!When leaders communicate well, stay focused, and create environments built on trust, the outcomes get better, whether in healthcare or any other industry. Here are some of my personal highlights:What “effective leadership” looks like when quality, cost, and patient outcomes collideHow trust is built through communication, humility, and consistent performanceLeading teams through staffing shortages, resource pressure, and constant changeWhy accountability is the missing link in healthcare, not just fundingWhat “conquer your potential” means to someone who operates in life-and-death moments (talk about mega pressure)At the coreGreat leadership under pressure comes back to clarity, humility, and keeping the main thing the MAIN THING!When leaders communicate well, stay focused, and create environments built on trust, the outcomes get better, whether in healthcare or any other industry. Here are some of my personal highlights:What “effective leadership” looks like when quality, cost, and patient outcomes collideHow trust is built through communication, humility, and consistent performanceLeading teams through staffing shortages, resource pressure, and constant changeWhy accountability is the missing link in healthcare, not just fundingWhat “conquer your potential” means to someone who operates in life-and-death moments (talk about mega pressure)Subscribe now to receive weekly leadership development and growth lessons right to your inbox. Sales skills are people skills

Ever notice how the best salespeople aren’t “selling” at all?  They’re connecting.Listening.Asking questions that make you think. Not just about their product, but about your own possibilities. That’s what my guest, Anna Granic, and I explored on this episode of ConquerCast.Anna’s a powerhouse in sales, motivation, and LinkedIn strategy. Her story’s one of grit and growth .. moving from health/fitness to sales leadership to becoming a sought-after speaker. We talked about how sales skills are really people skills .. and why trust isn’t built in a sales conversation. It’s built in the space between. Because in business .. and in leadership .. connection is the currency! THREE BIG IDEAS Anna shared how presence, consistency, and personal growth fuel every great conversation. We also unpacked three powerful ideas: ✅ Sales skills are people skills. The more you understand people, the easier the sales part becomes. ✅ Connection always comes before conversion. When you genuinely connect .. whether on LinkedIn, in a meeting, or during a follow-up .. relationships form. And relationships lead to opportunity. ✅ You’ll never reach “the top”. There’s always another level. The mountain keeps growing as you do. Each stage of growth demands new habits, skills, and questions. Essentially .. Leadership isn’t a destination!

If you think you “arrive” as a leader once you land the big role, think again. Do you know any leaders who believe that once they get the title, the corner office, or the fancy red sports care ..  that’s it. They’ve “made it.” ?Here’s the truth: leadership isn’t about arrival. It’s about growth. Stop growing, and you stop leading. This is exactly what Laura Johnston and I unpacked on this episode , where we dove into leadership development, authenticity and continuous growth!Laura’s leadership journey spans more than 15 years across small towns, mid-sized municipalities, and now one of Canada’s fastest-growing cities .. Brampton.Along the way she’s learned that:✅ Authentic leadership beats perfection.✅ Networking and mentorship matter more than you think.✅ Self-leadership and self-care isn’t optional. They’re leadership fuel.✅ And the best leaders? They never stop being curious. She shared how moving into bigger roles didn’t make her “complete.” Instead, it challenged her to double down on trust, team empowerment, and investing in others. One of my favourite takeaways? Laura’s reminder that leadership isn’t a final destination. It’s a daily practice. Subscribe now to receive weekly leadership development and growth lessons right to your inbox. This time, the tables were turned.Instead of me doing the interviewing, I was in the hot seat, joining Mansi, host of Elevate: A DBNC Leadership Podcast. Here’s the truth: newcomers often underestimate the leadership skills they already bring with them. But think about it .. when you’re new to a country, every single day requires courage and making decisions without certainty.🎧 Check out the full episode .. Future of Leadership = Radical Listening

Two leaders. Two worlds. One conversation that will change how you think about communication. When two Master of Communications Management (MCM) alumni share their stories … and one other MCM alumni layers in his perspective, you get more than theory. You get expert lessons you can use right away!In this ConquerCast episode, I speak with Eileen Marlowe and Sara Goldvine .. leaders in completely different sectors, united by a belief in purposeful, people-first communication! This is the good stuff .. and we cover a lot of ground in this episode. From building trust in Indigenous-government relations, to aligning large, distributed teams, to the leadership trends shaping the future of work. Both Eileen and Sara share candid lessons they’ve learned navigating complex systems, including:Why WHO’s in the room matters just as much as the decisions being made. How strategic communication can level the playing field and drive equity. The role of authenticity, humility, and curiosity in modern leadership. What stood out to me most was how often their experiences overlapped. Despite working in completely different contexts.“Trust and tone aren’t soft issues. They’re critical to project outcomes.”“If you can’t build connection with your people, what are the chances you’ll have influence and leadership with them?”I also include additional commentary, lessons and takeaways based on what I see working with leaders and teams. If you care about leading with purpose, communicating with clarity and creating meaningful change in your organization or community, this conversation is worth your time.Subscribe now to receive weekly leadership development and growth lessons right to your inbox. Flying High in Financial Services

Another episode of ConquerCast is out and we're focusing on retirement and un-retirement!   I'm excited to introduce to you all, Sonya Sokoliuk. After over 30 years in the airline industry, she didn’t just retire—she switched gears completely and re-hired herself in the mortgage and financial services world. 🚀 Talk about a career 180!   Sonya is now a mortgage agent and has teamed up with The Mortgage Coach, a brokerage led by people who are just as passionate about coaching as they are about finances. We had a chance to geek out together about leadership, mortgages, and big career moves.   The pandemic was a pivotal moment for Sonya, as it was for so many of us. She experienced what I like to call a "mid-life career change," not a mid-life crisis. It was a moment of clarity that led her to leave the airline industry—where she had been for over three decades—and step into the world of mortgages. She recognized that the financial industry, while completely different from her previous career, offered the challenge and intellectual growth she was looking for.   In our conversation, Sonya highlighted some key transferable skills from her airline days that serve her well in finance:  1️⃣ Accountability 2️⃣ Critical thinking 3️⃣ Communication 4️⃣ Self-leadership 5️⃣ Client-first mindset   And for anyone looking for a mortgage agent—Sonya shared three essential things to consider. Make sure you have a broker who listens to you, answers your questions with transparency, and helps you understand the full picture of what you’re signing up for. I had a blast speaking with my good friend, Harneak. He's the founder of HSB Visualz Inc. Harneak and I have done some coaching together and his entrepreneurship journey is truly inspiring!   During our conversation, Harneak shared how our coaching sessions helped him set clear goals and appreciate the power of human connection. He also offered practical advice for entrepreneurs on enhancing their online presence through unique, relevant, and consistent content. Not to mention, he made me blush pretty early in our conversation! You ever known a brown guy with a beard to blush that big?   Harneak embodies the essence of continuous growth which has helped him step out of his comfort zone! This is something we all struggle with, myself included. And quite often, as we're trying to break free of our comfort zone, imposter syndrome pops up.   Let's learn to get better at imposter syndrome. Not get rid of it. In Conversation on Communications

Up until a few years ago, I didn’t know another communications leader that looked like me.Then I met Rashpal Rai during a virtual conference hosted by the Master of Communications Management program (MCM). He had me at “hello” 😁. A few months ago I had the pleasure of having a very real and open conversation with Rashpal about our experiences as communication and PR leaders. From our initial inspiration to join the industry to strategies for gaining influence at the decision-making table, we share how our Sikh backgrounds have enriched our MCM journeys and professional careers. We also offer perspectives for overcoming feelings of marginalization in the workplace and discuss how organizations can elevate diverse voices for a more inclusive future. I don’t seem to have an issue talking about the work I do in leader development, team engagement and coaching. This topic is different – it brings in my Sikh faith, which plays an important and special role in my life. What I’m getting at is … this isn’t easy to share or openly talk about! As you watch/listen, I ask that you please do so with kindness. And share back how your background, faith or differentiation has impacted your life and career. Here’s what we discuss:What inspired us to get into PR and CommsHow we have further developed our communications skills to help get us a seat at the decision-making tableHow our unique background and perspectives impacted our MCM journey and professional careerAdvice/perspective for those who may feel challenged by a sense of marginalization in the professional worldHow organizations can do a better job of elevating diverse voices and perspectives 💥 Subscribe to the Conquer Leadership weekly email newsletter for the latest insights and tips on leadership development, team engagement and personal excellence!
