“You're Beginning to Look A Lot Like Jesus” 2 Corinthians 3:17-18 KJV 17Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. 18But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord. You remember that song, “It’s beginning to Look a Lot like Christmas,” by Bing Crosby.  While this song was reportedly released a few times by various artists, first recorded and released by Perry Como and The Fontane Sisters with Mitchell Ayres & His Orchestra in September 1951 and there was also a version released by Michael Buble’ in 2011, however, the version I heard was the version performed by Bing Crosby. As the title hints, “It’s beginning to Look a Lot like Christmas,” is a song that romanticizes the pagan holiday known as Christmas and the signs you’ll see that indicates that time of the year is near. Some of the signs outlined in the lyrics are is the carol that you’ll sing, the toys in every store and the prettiest sight to see, is the holly that will be on your own front door.  Very evocative and festive song that really puts you in the mood for egg nog and Christmas cookies, but when I heard it in my spirit was right after I asked the Lord this one question, what is with all the spiritual warfare I am encountering?  This is when I heard you’re beginning to look a lot like Jesus and the way I heard it reminded me of the song, “It’s beginning to Look a Lot like Christmas.” I was like huh?

Oh, The Horror – War of the Worlds 2 Thessalonians 2:6-12 6And now ye know what withholdeth that he might be revealed in his time. 7For the mystery of iniquity doth already work: only he who now letteth will let, until he be taken out of the way. 8And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming: 9Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders, 10And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved. 11And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie: 12That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness. Ah yes, the one that took deception to a whole new level. While technically the one I am speaking of, directed by Orson Welles was a radio broadcast adaptation of H.G. Wells’ novel and not a film, I just had to add it for this Oh, The Horror message because of the wisdom, my heavenly Father recently spoke to me concerning this. The War of the Worlds, directed and narrated by Orson Welles in 1938 was presented as a series of mock news bulletins that caused pandemonium because listeners mistook this fake news about a Martian invasion as the real thing, sound familiar.  I could drop the mic right there, but there is so much more to this message than that.

Oh, The Horror – The Stuff 1 Samuel 8:17-22 KJV 17He will take the tenth of your sheep: and ye shall be his servants. 18And ye shall cry out in that day because of your king which ye shall have chosen you; and the LORD will not hear you in that day. 19Nevertheless the people refused to obey the voice of Samuel; and they said, Nay; but we will have a king over us; 20That we also may be like all the nations; and that our king may judge us, and go out before us, and fight our battles. 21And Samuel heard all the words of the people, and he rehearsed them in the ears of the LORD. 22And the LORD said to Samuel, Hearken unto their voice, and make them a king. One of the reasons I included this movie as a part of this seasons, Oh The Horror, is because it’s not just a horror film, but it speaks to the power of advertising and consumerism, a metaphorical representation, if you will, of the dangers of blindly following trends and consuming products without question.  The deeper meaning here is that we so want to fit in, be like everyone else to the point where we don’t care if the thing we’re consuming, using, following, is harmful to us, whether psychologically, emotionally, physically or spiritually, we just don’t want to be seen as different.  Some such recent examples would be our obsession with cellphones, the COVID vaccines and now yes, AI.

Oh, The Horror – Weapons 1 Peter 5:8 KJV Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: Seeking whom he may devour, catch that.  This means that the one seeking, the devil, our adversary, seeks to devour. However, the word tells us that it is a hunt and he can’t devour everyone. This is why he goes around seeking, looking, searching, testing, trying.  Is it you? Is it them? Is it me…                                                                                            This sounds like the disciples when Jesus tells them, during the Passover meal, one of you will betray me. It is at that time, they all begin to inquire of Jesus, ‘Is it I?’

Oh, The Horror – Let the Right One In 2 John 1:7-11 KJV 7For many deceivers are entered into the world, who confess not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh. This is a deceiver and an antichrist. 8Look to yourselves, that we lose not those things which we have wrought, but that we receive a full reward. 9Whosoever transgresseth, and abideth not in the doctrine of Christ, hath not God. He that abideth in the doctrine of Christ, he hath both the Father and the Son. 10If there come any unto you, and bring not this doctrine, receive him not into your house, neither bid him God speed: 11For he that biddeth him God speed is partaker of his evil deeds. Having seen both versions of the film, I must say the original was the winner in this battle. Touted as a chilling story of prepubescent love between a boy and a vampire, we will examine how this movie is a cautionary tale of what happens when we aren’t sensitive to the warnings concerning who we choose to love and those that we allow into our lives. We must also understand that there are those that you should let in, The Right Ones and if there are the Right Ones, there are certainly, The Wrong Ones.  We have a choice here, a decision to make, a one or the other, so to speak, there is no middle ground.

Oh, The Horror – Hell House LLC: Lineage Proverbs 25:28 KJV 28He that hath no rule over his own spirit is like a city that is broken down, and without walls.

Oh, The Horror  – The Bye Bye Man Proverbs 13:1-3 KJV 1A wise son heareth his father's instruction: but a scorner heareth not rebuke. 2A man shall eat good by the fruit of his mouth: but the soul of the transgressors shall eat violence. 3He that keepeth his mouth keepeth his life: but he that openeth wide his lips shall have destruction. Bearing the tagline, Don’t Speak it. Don’t Say It, tells the story of three college friends whose move into a house unleashes a supernatural entity named The Bye Bye Man, a demon that preys on anyone who says or even thinks of his name, causing them to hallucinate and commit violent acts.  They soon discover, the only way to save themselves and those around them, is to keep his name a secret. We will examine this film to see how urban legends, taboo avoidance and superstition are used to create the perfect environment to strike fear that goes beyond an individual, but can affect communities. As one of satan’s favorite weapons in his quest for keeping all of humanity in bondage, this spirit known as fear is also his delivery system to bring about chaos and confusion where there was once peace and order.  But as the Bible reminds us, as children of God and therefore joint heirs with Christ, our armor against this spirit is love.

Oh, The Horror – LongLegs 2 Corinthians 2:11 KJV 11Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices. Set in the 1990’s, LongLegs tells the story of FBI agent Lee Harker, played by Maika Monroe of It Follows fame who is tasked with tracking down an occultist serial killer known as Longlegs, played by Nicholas Cage of Face Off and Con Air, who is responsible for murdering multiple families throughout Oregon. However, in the course of her investigation, she discovers she has a personal connection to the killer and must stop him before he strikes again. What really did it for me was, this movie really delved into the realty that there is a type that satan looks for.  I mean he is willing to take anyone he can, you know, seeking whom he may devour, but he does have a type, those ones that truly light up to him like a Christmas tree.  This is why you must keep watch at all times and pray.

Mark 3:23-27 KJV 23And he called them unto him, and said unto them in parables, How can Satan cast out Satan? 24And if a kingdom be divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand. 25And if a house be divided against itself, that house cannot stand. 26And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end. 27No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strong man; and then he will spoil his house. You know in my research concerning the definition for strongman, as stated in scripture, can refer to satan as well as an actual man of strength.  In the articles that I read, it stated that what was meant when Jesus spoke of the strongman, he was speaking about satan and Jesus, being stronger than satan, can hold him captive and take all that he has, including all those he has kept bound.

So, you know what that means, its time for another hellorific Halloween where we, here at Supping with Jesus, take a look at 6 of the cringe worthiest in scary movies that may have once haunted your dreams, but now Jesus has entered the building. It’s Oh, the Horror for the ’25, where we illuminate the truths in these films concerning the teachings of the Kingdom of God.   Now, I know, we must again address the naysayers, how can violence, gore and such depravities glorify God?  It doesn’t it illuminates Him.  How do you know that you are dwelling in darkness if you’re never introduced to the light. How will you know to seek a physician, if you don’t know what sickness looks like and see yourself through its lens?

Let Us Not Be Derelict Matthew 9:34-38 KJV 34But the Pharisees said, He casteth out devils through the prince of the devils. 35And Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every sickness and every disease among the people. 36But when he saw the multitudes, he was moved with compassion on them, because they fainted, and were scattered abroad, as sheep having no shepherd. 37Then saith he unto his disciples, The harvest truly is plenteous, but the labourers are few; 38Pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he will send forth labourers into his harvest.

Acts 19:11-17 KJV 11And God wrought special miracles by the hands of Paul: 12So that from his body were brought unto the sick handkerchiefs or aprons, and the diseases departed from them, and the evil spirits went out of them. 13Then certain of the vagabond Jews, exorcists, took upon them to call over them which had evil spirits the name of the Lord Jesus, saying, We adjure you by Jesus whom Paul preacheth. 14And there were seven sons of one Sceva, a Jew, and chief of the priests, which did so. 15And the evil spirit answered and said, Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are ye? 16And the man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on them, and overcame them, and prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded. 17And this was known to all the Jews and Greeks also dwelling at Ephesus; and fear fell on them all, and the name of the Lord Jesus was magnified.

The harsh reality is, this is going to be a nightmare come true for many believers, those that thought they were on the narrow road, but realized too late that somewhere, around the way, they lost their way. They didn’t realize they were in a pot set to boil because their compromise was just little by little and before they knew it, their conscience became so seared, they couldn’t find their direction anymore because they had allowed satan’s voice to drown out God’s.

For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were that believed not, and who should betray him. 65And he said, Therefore said I unto you, that no man can come unto me, except it were given unto him of my Father. 66From that time many of his disciples went back, and walked no more with him. 67Then said Jesus unto the twelve, Will ye also go away? 68Then Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life. 69And we believe and are sure that thou art that Christ, the Son of the living God. 70Jesus answered them, Have not I chosen you twelve, and one of you is a devil?

And they covenanted with him for thirty pieces of silver. Betray: to break someone’s trust, often by being disloyal, dishonest, or unfaithful, and causing them harm in the process. It involves a violation of the expectations and promises that form the foundation of a relationship or commitment.

John 10:10 KJV 10The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly. Remember the movie Die Hard, released in1988 starring Bruce Willis as the NYPD detective John McClane who becomes a one man army against a group of terrorists. Well in the movie, McClane is asked by the head terrorist in charge, Gruber, who are you then and he replies "Just a fly in the ointment, Hans. The monkey in the wrench. The pain in the…" This was his way of announcing his presence and warning Gruber of the problem he is about to become for him and his jolly band of criminals. Needless to say, Gruber was none too happy about this announcement and even more unhappy when his warning came to pass.  Because as he was soon to discover, once a fly has gotten in that ointment, you have to throw the whole thing out.

Luke 12:5 But I will forewarn you whom ye shall fear: Fear him, which after he hath killed hath power to cast into hell; yea, I say unto you, Fear him. Purgatory: : an intermediate state after death for expiatory purification   specifically : a place or state of punishment wherein according to Roman Catholic doctrine the souls of those who die in God's grace may make satisfaction for past sins and so become fit for heaven Hell: 1: a nether world in which the dead continue to exist (2) : the nether realm of the devil and the demons in which condemned people suffer everlasting punishment   You know, I have run into this discussion and it is amazing to me, no matter how much I try to explain to certain people that the very Bible their denomination supposedly patterns themselves after tells you specifically that hell is where you go if you die and aren’t “right” with God, they still choose not to believe me.

Acts 5:38-39 KJV 38And now I say unto you, Refrain from these men, and let them alone: for if this counsel or this work be of men, it will come to nought: 39But if it be of God, ye cannot overthrow it; lest haply ye be found even to fight against God. I want to illuminate the tactics of the devil and to get you to understand how he speaks and how you will hear that same foolishness from the mouth of people because they can be used by satan just like Peter, like Judas, the Sadducees, the passersby the Pharisees and even ourselves can be used by satan to stop us from reaching our destinies. So let not your eyes be found wide shut.

N. gonorrhoeae infects the mucous membranes of the reproductive tract, including the cervix, uterus, and fallopian tubes in women, and the urethra in women and men.

Oh, The Horror:  Is this, It? Isaiah 14:7-21 KJV 16They that see thee shall narrowly look upon thee, and consider thee, saying, Is this the man that made the earth to tremble, that did shake kingdoms; 17That made the world as a wilderness, and destroyed the cities thereof; that opened not the house of his prisoners? 18All the kings of the nations, even all of them, lie in glory, every one in his own house. 19But thou art cast out of thy grave like an abominable branch, and as the raiment of those that are slain, thrust through with a sword, that go down to the stones of the pit; as a carcase trodden under feet.   In 2016, US News and world reports broke down a list of the 10 most notable and as they described it often creepy clowns in pop culture.  A few of these you may have heard of I’m sure. Coming in at number one was Ronald Mcdonald who was the clown character used as the primary mascot of the McDonald's fast-food restaurant chain. 

Oh, The Horror – The Fog Psalms 34:4 4I sought the LORD, and he heard me, and delivered me from all my fears.

Oh, The Horror – Exorcismus  Matthew 11:15-17 KJV 15He that hath ears to hear, let him hear. 16But whereunto shall I liken this generation? It is like unto children sitting in the markets, and calling unto their fellows, 17And saying, We have piped unto you, and ye have not danced; we have mourned unto you, and ye have not lamented. The word "exorcism" comes from the Latin word exorcismus, and the earliest known use of the English word was around 1400. Exorcism is the religious or spiritual practice that involves evicting malevolent spirits from a person or place that is believed to be possessed. The practice is ancient and is part of the belief systems of many cultures and religions. 

One of the things we tend to do, when we see a movie that we find unsettling and disturbing, we try to convince ourselves that it’s just a movie, this could never happen to me.  This may seem like just a movie, but sexual curses are real. AIDS, Gonorrhea, Syphilis, HPV, Cancer and they do follow and some can kill and they can be transmitted to the next person you decide to lay down with and the first person to you.  How about a screaming baby when you have an unwanted pregnancy? How many of you know that this will surely follow you?

Oh, The Horror - Nefarious 1 John 4:1 KJV 1Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world. One of the things about this movie, that I thought set it apart from others of its kind, was the scene where the priest comes to visit Brady before his execution. To a demon possessing a man, the last thing he wants to encounter is a man of the cloth. The reason being, a true man or woman of God is a threat to the demon possessing or influencing someone because that man or woman of God has the discernment to see it, the power to resist it and ultimately cast it out.

Oh, The Horror – Smile Matthew 6:22-23 KJV 22The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light. 23But if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness!

I know you remember the hit song ‘You Wanna be Startin’ Something’ by Michael Jackson. Written by Jackson, the song was said to be an attack on the tabloid press and those who hounded and tried to use and take advantage of him. These themes were evident in such lyrics as "They eat off of you, you're a vegetable." But, one day, as I was listening to this song, the Holy Spirit led me to, instead, see Jesus in the lyrics, his disciples and us as modern day followers of Christ.

What Does the Bible Say about Thou Shalt Not Covet Exodus 20:17-18 KJV 17Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbour's. 18And all the people saw the thunderings, and the lightnings, and the noise of the trumpet, and the mountain smoking: and when the people saw it, they removed, and stood afar off.

“When You’re Stuck on Stupid” Matthew 16:5-9 KJV 5And when his disciples were come to the other side, they had forgotten to take bread. 6Then Jesus said unto them, Take heed and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees. 7And they reasoned among themselves, saying, It is because we have taken no bread. 8Which when Jesus perceived, he said unto them, O ye of little faith, why reason ye among yourselves, because ye have brought no bread? 9Do ye not yet understand…?  According to the urban dictionary, “Stuck on stupid,” describes someone who is stuck in a cycle of endless stupidity when it comes to making decisions. As an adjective, it refers to a prolonged state of being completely clueless. When someone just doesn't get it, repeatedly; your mind draws a blank for the longest, this is also what it means to be stuck on stupid.

Matthew 13:19 KJV “When any one heareth the word of the kingdom, and understandeth it not, then cometh the wicked one, and catcheth away that which was sown in his heart. This is he which received seed by the way side.” In our anchor verse, we are given some insight by Jesus concerning one such characteristic of our adversary, that one thing that assures that satan is coming for you, when God has spoken a word over your life.

“I Dare You” Matthew 4:1-3 KJV 1Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil. 2And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward an hungred. 3And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread. “I dare you, I double dog dare you.” Have you ever had someone say that to you when they’re trying to bait you into doing something foolish?  “Truth or Dare,” don’t forget that game where they’d say I dare you to do this or that and then like a twit you’d go ahead and do it and be sorry later, saying I know I should’ve picked truth.

“Are You A Minister?” Matthew 9:36-38 KJV 36But when he saw the multitudes, he was moved with compassion on them, because they fainted, and were scattered abroad, as sheep having no shepherd. 37Then saith he unto his disciples, The harvest truly is plenteous, but the labourers are few; 38Pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he will send forth labourers into his harvest.

1 Timothy Chapter 4:1-2 1Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils; 2Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron; So, as it says your behavior waxes worse, because these demons want to gouge out your soul until there is nothing left, like this man at the tombs.  After having strayed so far from the Lord, you fall deeper and deeper into darkness.

James 1:21 – 24 21Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls. 22But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. 23For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass: 24For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was.

You know, I have some understanding of what happened to this man from the tombs because truth be told, I was once this man.  If we all tell the truth some of you were too and some of you are this man right now and others are about one demon from having your own legion.  But, at the time I had no understanding of what was happening to me, why I was acting the way I was or thinking the things I was thinking.  I just knew something was off because as I had once confided in a loved one, saying to them that something was wrong with me. As I described it, I was full of rage and lust.  I was crying out. You see, I had remembered the woman that I once was and the woman I was becoming wasn’t good. 

What is demon possession? Well according to the pocket bible dictionary; demon possession is described as an invasion and control of a person by evil spirits. In New Testament times these demons often cause disease, mental anguish and antisocial behavior. See these demons, these unclean spirits, they want to keep you ignorant. They want to keep you blind. They do this by separating you from the truth, the light, from God.  So, they do you like they did Eve, they find something inside you that they can use, that they can manipulate.  The serpent told Eve you shall be like God, this is why He, meaning God doesn’t want you to eat the fruit.  But that was a lie, as it is written they were already made in God’s image and in his likeness.
