In the past year, a boat and the Red Sea became my third living room under the open skies, on turquoise waters, among sandy islands, with dolphin loving dogs and an incomparable captain and adventurer of the deep (in the truest sense). It is the living room where I had the chance to, at least on a couple of occasions literally, flow musically through the winds and waves in the last year. Sunday 1 March 2020. 16:30 - 18:00 Revolver Upstairs - b2b with @spicysriracha My musical connection with Sriracha started on the dusty plains of the Rainbow Serpent Festival in 2019, where I stumbled upon a crowd of people dancing around a circus train. I thought 'who the hell is this chick playing half my playlist?' We connected soon after and by the time I left Melbourne, I had an incredible new musical soul family. Fast forward to Summer 2019, and The Monastery that made us cross paths yet again--this time on my home turf in a way, at the Gardens of Babylon. A fiery, and some dare say deep, musical bond was forged in the Kloster Café that Saturday night after I cheekily asked her if she had her USBs on her shortly after I was asked to play spontaneously at the Not-So-Secret Stage. Next thing she knew, she had her impromptu debut at one of the most beautiful and beloved musical gatherings around. That night and the follow-on adventure at Garbicz and Berlin were probably among the two unforgettable weeks of 2019, and one that left us certain that we were kindred spirits of sorts, somehow each other's spirit animals. Fast forward again to March 2020, when I snuck off for my yearly visit to Melbourne and was graciously invited to stay at a spaceship, and woken up on a Sunday morning with the news that Sriracha was suddenly left without a b2b partner, so she walked into my room and cheekily asked if I had my USBs on me. Next thing I know, we were back to continue that musical bond and write another incredible little chapter together. It has been a somewhat surreal start to the new decade, and one clouded in much uncertainty and soul searching, but one thing is certain: Yelena and I have many more chapters and adventures to write together. Werkstatt - Anomalie Art Club Berlin - Sat 12 October 2019 03:00 - 05:00 As a tremendous year of adventures music and 'find your tribe' comes to a close, I look back to one of my favourite nights of this year, where I had the chance to once again co-create a beautiful oasis with my beautiful ZERZURA family and expand beyond our Kiez Burn borders to connect with the Berlin and German Burner community. Shortly before taking over the decks, Jae & I had a look around the steamy, sweaty sea of people swaying and dancing the night away in the Werkstatt, and Jae asked me what I was in the mood for tonight. I thought about it for a second, and I said, "Well, we have a steamy sauna in front of us, with sweat dripping down the knobs and faders, so let's do these people a favour and help them get naked by the end of the night!' It was truly a night of many firsts. It was the first time Jae and I played a gig together (and definitely not for the last time!). However, the most unforgettable first among them, was getting to see a podium full of dancing naked goddesses in raptures to our music. We were truly humbled, and are so happy we can finally relive that incendiary Burn Night again. Looking forward to returning home in the scorching summer heat is a typical Australian summer, especially when the skies in Europe stay dark and grey for unnervingly long stretches. In 2019 I got to finally find myself joining this beautiful and welcoming family that is Rainbow and truly experience one of the best sounding stages in the world in person and feast my senses. It was made even more special by the fact that it was the first time in almost a decade I felt at home again in Melbourne again since leaving in 2008. This summer, I was fortunate enough to connect with a new beautiful musical family who came over to sample the upper echelons of the European doof season. After an unforgettable time across the Monastery to the Forest Wonderland known as Garbicz, I hope to come full circle to where it all begin, and reunite with my family in the dust at Rainbow Serpent 2020, except if I got to do that from the DJ booth as well..well, that would rather pleasant. Deep Playa, Tuesday Night, Dragomi Art Car | Black Rock City, NV | 29 August 2018 As that 'magical time of the year' comes around yet again and so many of my friends and wonderful connections around the world converge for That Thing in the Desert, I actually look forward to slowing down a little after a rather ambitious 8 months personal sabbatical mainly involving galavanting around the globe and finding my tribe. Looking back to 1 year ago and my first burn, and everything I have encountered there and since, mostly I am grateful, and so thankful to have surrounded myself with so many bright, beautiful, and downright brilliant humans from all walks of life. Our time with the Dragomi who we hosted at Camp DRIFT last year, was at times contentious as things can get in the heat and the dust, but overall it was a memorable time, and one of those special nights and mornings was following our debut of Franchise Freedom with luminous composer & pianist Joep Beving, with support from the mighty Mayan Warrior (incredible thanks to Pablo, Mauricio and the MW family) and Eelke Kleijn @eelke-kleijn. This spontaneous set cruising around after the first show was done and dusted was my way to coming down from the previous 5hrs' adrenaline rush supporting the sound production of our flying sculpture installation and piano performance while managing & curating the music on the Dragomi. The music has always been and will continue to be the drug that makes it possible. Thursday 20 June 2019, Underworld @ Kiez Burn - 20:00 - 22:00 It was the night that the camels of the Zerzura (@zerzura) oasis wandered over to the wild jungle of the Underworld, and I had the honour to play the sunset before the original Rebel der Träumer Elias Doré took the stage. Of course this was all during an Underworld staged a 'downtempo wegbassen' protest at Zerzura where the airwaves were hijacked with an onslaught of 150bpm+ tracks, so naturally it was our duty to show the Underworlders how we Zerzurians 'Give. Saturday sunrise 5 - 7AM, CobraCabana, Tankwa Town, AfrikaBurn 2019. Ubulahnti Peacocks Takeover w/ Veronika Fleyta, Joep Mencke, TantRut, Lev Tatarov, VANDER, Parallells, RAMMÖ Well where to start with this year's burn? Musically, it was one of challenges and growth and just learning to think on my feet. The theme of collaboration was certainly not lost with my Ubulahnti Peacock brothers and sisters, with whom I had the honour and sheer joy of taking over various camps and sound stages, including Javanesia, Bubbles & Bass, The Dung Beetle, WHY NOT, Dreamers, The Spirit Train and of course the inescapable vixen on the Playa this year: The seductive CobraCabana and its towering cobra head. After a week of sandstorms, crazy warm nights, the starry skies night in night out, the broken DJ controllers and misplaced USBs leading to 3 cancelled gigs, it finally came down to the mystical serpent. I had the honour of guiding her from the twilight into the final sunrise. Thank you to Maxime, Lucian and the entire CobraCabana family for giving so much to make this effigy and stage a reality (on their first attempt no less!). It was a magical night at Birgit&Bier reuniting with the Zerzura, Underworld & Süßkiez families after a summer full of adventures in dusty places, medieval monasteries, and magical metropolises. The vibe from the crowd was as electric as my time at the Monastery earlier this summer: open-hearted, vibrant and full of bliss. It was one of those rare occasions when a communion with the audience was built, and where I felt I was in musical dialogue through sweat, rhythm and palo santo.
