043: What Should Christians Do With Anger and Desire? Direct, Lull, or Kill the Passions
Today we discuss a five-part article series by seminary professor David Maxwell on how Christians should understand anger and desire, contrasting Plato’s chariot image (directing the passions) with the Stoic goal of eliminating them. We trace how early church fathers split between Gregory of Nyssa, who argues passions entered through the fall but should be redirected for good, and Cyril of Alexandria, who views the Christian life as lulling passions to sleep toward an invincible, passionless state. We evaluate how Lutheran law/gospel language can imply a stoic “kill the passions” spirituality, while Luther’s writings, hymns, and the Formula of Concord’s distinction between human nature and sin suggest passions are corrupted but not identical with sin and can be constructively directed with confidence in Christ. 042: What Is Church For? Worship as Receiving God’s Gifts
Today we open with talking about our new running-water feature in our in office studio then dive into why people go to church after a congregational survey asked “What is church for?” We contrast common views of church as a place to worship, a family routine, a social club, a moral/learning center, a service or political action hub, or a source of good feelings, noting pros and limitations of each (including how COVID disrupted habitual attendance). Using the Book of Concord and the Augsburg Confession, we define the church as the assembly of believers where the Gospel is purely preached and the sacraments are rightly administered, emphasizing worship primarily as receiving God’s gifts (forgiveness, Word, Sacrament) and secondarily responding with thanks and praise.01:31 Why Talk Church04:49 Kids Ask Why Church07:26 What Is Church Really10:58 Why Worship Habit15:44 Church As Social Club25:00 Church As Life Coaching29:37 Sermon Feedback 35:22 Knowledge Limits Brains36:37 Service And Politics38:09 Church vs State Lanes39:18 Two Realms Explained42:23 Therapeutic Deism Trap44:14 Emotions Without Manipulation51:44 Book of Concord Basics55:34 Augsburg Confession on Church01:01:43 Worship as Receiving Gifts01:10:18 Why Gather Every Sunday01:12:08 Wrapping Up and Next TopicThank you for gathering around the well that is Jesus with us here at "Desert Well'! 041: Why Strategic Planning Matters for Churches with special guest Leah Abel
We return to an in-person format with special guest Leah Abel, who will lead Lamb of God’s 2026 strategic planning process. Leah shares her background as a DCE and ministry leader, her path from Iowa to serving in Florida and Colorado, and her current work in process facilitation and project management for churches and organizations. This conversation addresses common objections to “strategic planning” in church settings, framing it as stewardship of attention, time, and resources and as clarity about identity and purpose rather than “more stuff.” Leah explains the difference between consultants and facilitators, emphasizing that ownership of decisions increases implementation. She outlines a two-phase process: a “vision frame” (mission, values, strategies, outcomes) informed by congregational input, followed by a one-page “vision plan” for multi-year direction, highlighting that the power is in the process as much as the final product. 040: Introduction to Sermon Series: Myths of Stewardship
The conversation introduces an upcoming post-Easter sermon series, “The Five Myths of Stewardship,” aiming to shift from a law-heavy “you must” approach to a more gospel-centered perspective. Key ideas include living in a “received world” where everything belongs to God, stewardship extending beyond money to time, talents, possessions, home, food, and children, and the clarification that the Bible doesn’t obligate Christians to give a 10% tithe—though it may serve as a helpful benchmark—since giving is ultimately a heart issue. 039:Urgency Is Not Faithfulness: Practicing Patient, Non-Anxious Christianity
Today we have set up a more natural on-camera conversation and as we discuss Thomas Anderson’s Christianity Today article “Urgency Is Not Faithfulness,” tying it to Holy Week and Christian discipleship. We reflect on internet-driven pressure for churches and pastors to issue immediate statements, noting how words are dissected for what they omit, and how anxiety spreads and elevates reactive voices. Using Exodus 34’s depiction of God as “slow to anger,” Jesus’ unhurried ministry, and Galatians 5’s patience (long-tempered) as a fruit of the Spirit, they contrast technological speed with “love’s speed,” emphasizing deliberate, faithful response rather than hot takes. We also consider Jesus writing in the dirt in John 8 and the need for non-anxious leadership that holds tension, forms discernment over time, and avoids echoing culture. In closing we discuss future episodes. We have attached this week's article discussed https://www.christianitytoday.com/2026/03/politics-christian-scandal-social-media-controversy-urgency-is-not-faithfulness/. 02:22 Choosing Article Topic04:19 Reading Begins News Cycle06:47 Faithfulness Over Urgency07:40 Pastor Pressure To Speak10:16 God Slow To Anger11:44 Hebrew Long Nostrils15:16 Patience Across History22:05 Three Mile An Hour God25:54 Modern Speed And AI29:01 Holy Week Slows Us30:36 If Jesus Came Today32:30 Church Addicted to Speed34:03 Patience in Greek36:26 Trends Not Moments39:37 Jesus Writes in Dirt41:30 Anxiety and Leadership48:23 Quietness and Trust53:24 Attention and Formation57:27 Wrapping Up and Next StepsThank you for joining us this week as we settle into our new podcast studio! 038: Removing Barriers So People Can Hear the Gospel
This week on 'Desert Well Podcast', we reflect on coming to faith, evidence and apologetics (including the book I Don’t Have Enough Faith to Be an Atheist, biblical archaeology via Expedition Bible, and visiting Israel), and share personal stories of faith formation without a single dramatic conversion moment. We explore obstacles that keep people from faith—personal pain and anger at God, societal pressures, hurt caused by Christians, and misconceptions about church—and connect this to Paul’s call in 1 Corinthians 9:19–23 to become “all things to all people” to gain a hearing for the gospel. Pastor Jared explains intentionally dressing and preaching in disarming ways to reduce barriers, invites feedback and listener stories, and notes the importance of context and humility.00:00 Podcast Updates and Setup02:43 Why Faith and Evidence Matter05:12 Blueberry Costume Explained07:27 Growing Up in the Faith13:17 Conversion Moments and Mission18:36 What Blocks People from Belief25:48 Becoming All Things to All30:58 Intentional Ministry Mindset33:02 Mission Over Preferences34:47 Comfort Zones and Change37:13 Disarming Pastor Barriers46:57 Small Seeds Over Time49:00 Meeting People Where They Are52:16 Context Matters in Approach55:57 Humility and Adaptation59:06 Final Challenge and FarewellThank you for joining us around the well! 037: Faith, Doubt, and the Trinity: Why Christianity Isn’t Blind Belief
In this episode, we have special guest Neil Grepke joining us as we discuss why God does not expect people to believeblindly and why asking “why” is not a problem. We acknowledge that some Christian doctrines, such as the Trinity, cannot be proven with scientific evidence and still require faith. At the same time, we argue that in today’sinternet culture, appeals like “because the Bible says so” are not persuasive to skeptics, so Christians should be able to explain why the Bible is trustworthy before moving into deeper, mysterious scriptural teachings. We emphasizethat people should feel free to admit doubts without guilt and connect this to conversations about law and gospel and who needs to hear what. Today we also compare modern believers with Abraham, noting that Abraham had direct, physical experiences of God speaking, unlike believers today who primarily receive God’s word through Scripture and worship. We have included the link to the Apologetics Resourcesthat Neil has provided to share with those that have further interest in today’s podcast https://docs.google.com/document/d/1IxgE9ncM12UCMy33D5Pl86Sx2osS0iBI/edit?usp=sharing&ouid=117086555907545152480&rtpof=true&sd=tru! 036: Holding Jesus’ Promises in a World of War, Death, and Doubt
Today Jared and Derek discuss the tension between Jesus’ promises and lived reality, sparked by a question about praying for peace amid conflict in the Middle East. They explore what Jesus means by giving peace, emphasizing internal peace in Christ while acknowledging that wars and unrest will persist until Jesus returns, and they encourage praying with specificity while trusting God’s timing. The conversation also addresses death in light of Jesus’ words in John 11, noting that earthly death remains while eternal death is defeated, and urging honest grief paired with Christian hope in resurrection. They stress confronting doubts byreturning to God’s Word, and they add the saint-and-sinner tension as another common struggle, ending with brief music recommendations and an invitation for listener feedback. 00:00 Welcome And Setup00:27 Praying For Peace02:24 Peace Promise Tension03:30 What Jesus Meant06:37 How To Pray Peace11:20 Timing And Resurrection17:30 Sticker Break And Reset18:19 Confront Doubt With Word24:02 Dissecting Feelings25:33 What Matters Most27:49 God Blesses Our Effort28:35 Peace as a Command29:20 Facing Death in Lent29:53 Lazarus and Resurrection Hope34:30 Grief With Hope37:35 Peace Through Loss40:22 Saint and Sinner Tension46:30 Where Would I Be48:45 Praying for All in War50:31 Music Plug and FarewellThank you for joining us! 035: Relational Wellness: Friendship, Loneliness, and How to Build Deeper Connections
In this episode, we discuss relational wellness as part of a broader wellness focus, reflecting on loneliness and theneed for three kinds of connection: an intimate relationship, close friends, and a community of belonging. Derek shares how his closest friendships formed through proximity and shared interests, but were sustained by trust, reciprocity, and meaningful conversation, including examples of long-term friends showing up in hardship. They explore why deeper friendships often require vulnerability over time, why church and school communities create opportunities but don’t guarantee close relationships, and how large communities face limits like Dunbar’s number. Practically, they encourage taking bold action—inviting someone to dinner or coffee, immersing yourself in community, and establishing regular conversations—to create space for deeper connection, care, and living out faith together.00:00 Welcome and Updates01:24 Wellness Wheel Overview03:17 Relational Wellness Focus04:19 Loneliness and Three Connections06:00 Derek on Best Friends07:36 Friendship Stories and Support10:57 What Makes Friendships Deep15:42 Conversation and Reciprocity21:10 Commitment and Church Community24:30 Limits of Closeness26:26 Church as Connection29:50 Created for Relationship32:51 Practical Friendship Steps33:54 Invite and Share Time36:58 Bold Moves Matter41:16 Vulnerability Over Time44:20 Immerse in Community47:45 Meals and Incarnation49:54 Small Words Big Impact50:54 Final Takeaway and WrapThank you for joining us today! 034: Christian Meditation, Mindfulness, and Luther: Looking Outside Ourselves to Jesus
Today we return with another ‘Desert Well’ conversation around Jesus, reflecting on the humbling start of Lent after Ash Wednesday. We will connect the topic to widespread anxiety in both youth and adults, then discuss a Concordia Journal transcript from Concordia Seminary St. Louis’ “Tangible” podcast featuring Dr. Rick Mars and his work on Christ-centered Christian counseling. We explore common perceptions that meditation is mainly an Eastern/Buddhist practice, contrast inward-focused transcendental meditation with Christians meditating on Scripture, and explain “first article” (creation) gifts like breathing and muscle awareness as practical tools for anxiety without fear of adopting another religion. We will highlight research on how anxiety affects breathing and how calming techniques can help. The episode then turns to Martin Luther’s approach—Oratio, Meditatio, and Tentatio (prayer, meditation, and testing/struggle)—and describes meditation as “chewing the cud” on God’s external Word rather than seeking answers within. We discuss how spiritual attacks and life’s struggles can drive believers back to prayer and Scripture, and emphasize mutual consolation and bearing one another’s burdens, not leaving care only to pastors or trained ministers. Practical examples include pausing between petitions of the Lord’s Prayer to reflect and pray, an eight-step devotional practice (relaxation, imagery, breath, compassion, protection, intercession, offering anxieties to God, and closing), and noting the existence of Christian meditation apps while cautioning about doctrinal soundness. In this episode we explain what our format will beas we review important church reports once a month. Today we will look into The Unstuck Group's Q3 2025 Church Health Report. Through honest conversation, they unpack how even Christians can unknowingly worship false gods in their daily lives. This conversation challenges listeners to examine their hearts and consider what they're truly clinging to for hope, security, and meaning.
