The account of Israel's fall into idolatry at Sinai with the Golden Calf offers sobering lessons and warnings for us today. The Apostle Paul cites this story as a caution to believers in 1 Corinthians chapter 10. Let us beware lest we also fall!

Israel faces another test in this section of Exodus. The key to understanding this passage is found in verse 25 – "and there he proved them". One of the major purposes of God in the wilderness journeyings was to test His people. So, there is much to be learned about trials and testings in the walk of faith from this passage. The word 'Marah' means "bitterness" so we can also learn something about bitter experiences in the Christian life and how to overcome them by God's grace.

After the Divine intervention at the Red Sea, Moses and Israel sung a glorious hymn of praise to God for His deliverance. There is much to be learned about true, God honoring praise from this song of Moses.

We come now to the tenth and final plague. The first 9 plagues were delivered in series of three but the final plague stands alone on account of its severity. In these verses we reach the summit, the climax of this great victory chapter. Having climbed out of the valley of defeat in chapter 7, we commence the climb heavenward in chapter 8. In these final verses we find ourselves surrounded by the pure light of our Sovereign God, streaming down upon us from the throne of God.
