Bronwyn Wright: Papua New Guinea’s First Women’s Health Hub - Cervical Cancer Screening for K20
In this episode, I sit down with Bronwyn Wright, CEO of the Sir Brian Bell Foundation, a proud wife and mother, and a huge influence in my journey beyond NRL. She’s helped me see Papua New Guinea in a whole new way: with empathy, purpose, and hope.We talk about her family’s deep roots in PNG, the legacy of Sir Brian Bell, and why improving women’s health through Her Health Hub, is a mission close to her heart. We also unpack the January 10 crisis. How it shook the country and businesses like Brian Bell. But more importantly, how it brought out resilience, unity, and true leadership. It was an opportunity to “Build Back Better”. Brian Bell has been part of PNG since 1958, more than 67 years of building a business and supporting communities across the country. This episode is about leading with heart, rising through tough times and showing up when it matters most.Recorded with five minutes' notice in the Brian Bell boardroom in Port Moresby — no script, no prep, just two Rode mics, an iPhone, and Bron casually dropping wisdom like it was a TED Talk. Real, raw, and straight from the heart. Big thanks to Bron for rolling with it like a pro!To get in touch with Bron and the team visit:LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/bronwyn-wright-6a03368/https://www.facebook.com/herhealthhubpng/Her Health Hub, located at Stop & Shop Badili in Port Moresby, is a pioneering women's health clinic dedicated to providing affordable and accessible cervical cancer screening services in Papua New Guinea. Established through a partnership between the Sir Brian Bell Foundation and the CPL Foundation, the clinic offers same-day HPV and cervical cancer testing for just K20, utilising WHO-endorsed GeneXpert diagnostic technology. This initiative addresses a critical health need, as cervical cancer is the second most common cancer among women in PNG, with high incidence and mortality rates. By facilitating early detection and immediate referrals to Port Moresby General Hospital's Obstetrics & Gynaecology Clinic, Her Health Hub plays a vital role in improving women's health outcomes.Beyond clinical services, Her Health Hub also engages in broader awareness and education campaigns aimed at reducing the stigma around reproductive health care, encouraging more women to seek regular screenings, and ultimately lowering cervical cancer rates across PNG.https://sirbrianbellfoundation.org.pg/The Sir Brian Bell Foundation is a family driven organisation dedicated to supporting the people of Papua New Guinea through health, education, and community programs. Led by CEO Bronwyn Wright, the Foundation has proudly operated for 9 years, staying true to the values of the Sir Brian Bell family legacy. In that time, it has contributed over 50 million kina to projects across the country, helping to build a stronger, healthier, and more hopeful PNG.The new "Beyond the Field" branding was proudly developed in collaboration with Colony Group — bringing the vision and identity of this new chapter to life. Lee Cheesman: Tumour found in brain after hit by car, Healing through Ayahuasca, Breathing
Lee Cheesman shares a story of how a near death experience to be something that saved her life, literally. Getting hit by a car while crossing the road. It was because of this event that doctors found a lime-sized tumour in her head while she was in hospital. The tumour was affecting an optic nerve which meant her sight wasn’t clear. As a result she was hit by a car she ‘didn’t see’. After nine months of chemo and two operations she has been clear since 2013. She shares what helped her through that period.Lee works for Pacific Labour Facility - a program which helps people from the Pacific Islands to get work into a currently in-demand industry. Many people (mainly from PNG) have messaged me on social media channels asking to help them to get jobs in this space. Please go to the Labour Mobility Units within the country. That is the only way to connect with the employers in Australia.Go to www.palm.gov.au This conversation covers many interesting and different fields: Ayahuasca - uncovering memories as a child; the meaning behind them. This is something that I personally want to experience. Delouise Hoeter: Elite Athlete Wellbeing, Family, Respect, Strength of Vulnerability
Delouise has had a different path to NRL than most. Seven years between first grade games and plenty of speed bumps along the way. We speak about what is was like to move countries from Tonga to New Zealand and then from New Zealand to Australia, and what the best tips are for handling that transition. Being held accountable at a young age by his older brother helped him to stay on the right path. Fear of letting others down was one way of staying on track. Young guys in rugby league should make the most out of the education grants that the game provides. How external pressures can be better managed by athletes. Lucy Loko: PNG, Education, Volunteer Work, Changing Mindset, Rotary Benefits
This is one of the most important conversations I’ve had on the podcast — it speaks directly to my roots and where I hope to make the biggest impact. Lucy was born in Hula, Central Province PNG, in a village with no running water or electricity. After a tough start in Port Moresby, she moved to Melbourne for better opportunities. Unfulfilled in her career, she followed her passion and founded a project in memory of her late brother, Peter Nathan Loko — building classrooms in her home village, Lese Oalai in Gulf Province. We talk about the challenges of uniting a village, shifting mindsets, and the power of long-term thinking. Education takes time, but it’s the foundation for lasting change. Lucy also shares her experience with the Rotary Club and the value of volunteering — giving without expecting anything in return, knowing the true rewards will be seen in future generations.About David Mead:About David Mead:David played 14 years of professional rugby league, representing the Brisbane Broncos, Gold Coast Titans, Catalans Dragons, and captaining the PNG Kumuls. Kevin Gordon: Overcoming Shyness, Music, Rugby League, Confront Your Fears
Early Days at the Gold Coast Titans. The hardest part of professional rugby league. Taking the footy mentality and applying it to other parts of life. Rollerblading in Miami and Burleigh. Enlightening the world by being your weird self.A transition from professional rugby league to interest in acting. Being told by a nurse “There goes your acting career” was an inspiration to take on the acting. After performing his first monologue and earning a scholarship to go to America he felt a new world open up. “It was one of the scariest things I've ever done - auditioning.” “When something scares you it has power over you. Once you do it it feels like you are free and can do more with your life. That’s the lesson I got from it.” Kevin GordonOn producing music - doing a live show is the big goal. The road to the art world isn’t as straightforward as playing professional rugby league. In league there is a plan and if you follow it you have a chance of making it. It’s different in the artworld - you doing your own thing.Kev’s new album is out on all platforms now. The Deepening. “It’s about expressing yourself more in a deep way.”I purchased the album through Itunes after this conversation. I tried to pay close attention to the lyrics. A lot of it was freaking hilarious! There are a few songs you hear and think “these are pretty full on”. That is his goal - to make people think more about what’s happening around the world, especially with the mainstream media’s delivery of “news.” It is $12 on Itunes and although I thought at first I would purchase it just to support a friend but after listening I actually enjoyed the music.Connect with Kev and follow him on instagram: https://www.instagram.com/deepgordonAbout David Mead:David played 14 years of professional rugby league, representing the Brisbane Broncos, Gold Coast Titans, Catalans Dragons, and captaining the PNG Kumuls. Dave Donaghy: Leading the Broncos & How Small Actions Lead to Big Vision
Dave Donaghy is the CEO of the Brisbane Broncos — one of the most iconic sporting organisations in Australia. This past year has brought its challenges, but also strong results off the field and a clear long-term vision as Brisbane prepares for a golden decade leading into the Olympics. I asked Dave about how a vision is built — not just because I’m curious, but because I want the rugby league community in my home country in Papua New Guinea to hear how one of the biggest clubs in the world sets direction, stays focused, and gets results. What stood out is how simple the process can be when done well: “What do we need to start doing, stop doing, and keep doing?” “What’s worked? What hasn’t?” “Was the timing just not right?” “Listen to the people who’ve been here longer than you.” This episode reminds us that you don’t need a lot of resources to make progress — small actions like staying focused, asking the right questions, and committing to your vision day by day can take you a long way, no matter where you’re from. We also chat about procrastination, productivity, leadership, and stories from Dave’s journey — from Melbourne Storm to the Broncos. Dave is a proud supporter of the Carl Webb Foundation, helping raise awareness and support for Motor Neurone Disease (MND) — a condition affecting some of rugby league’s toughest players, including Carl Webb, my former PNG teammate Tu’u Maori, and the UK’s Rob Burrow. 👉 Learn more or donate: https://www.carlwebbfoundation.org Connect with Dave and follow him on: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/dave-donaghy-03795736/ About David Mead: David played 14 years of professional rugby league, representing the Brisbane Broncos, Gold Coast Titans, Catalans Dragons, and captaining the PNG Kumuls. Ben Ikin: State of Origin Youngest Ever & the Power of Doing the Job Well
Ben Ikin is the Head of Football at the Brisbane Broncos — one of Australia’s largest sporting organisations — and still holds the record as the youngest ever player to debut in State of Origin. In this episode, Ben reflects on his upbringing on the Gold Coast, a family full of sport, music and performance, and how that shaped the conversations and values he carried into rugby league. Marcus Bai: From PNG to Premiership Glory & Finding His Voice
“Rugby league is a team sport. It’s not about one person.” — Marcus Bai Marcus is one of the few players in rugby league history to win an NRL Premiership, a Super League title, and a World Club Challenge. He has created an incredible legacy. In this episode, Marcus shares powerful reflections on his journey from Papua New Guinea to the biggest stages in rugby league. When he first arrived in Australia, the language barrier made it hard to speak up. But that changed in 1998 at the Melbourne Storm. It was teammate Tawera Nikau who helped spark his confidence to find his voice in a team setting, and the culture at Melbourne laid the foundation for the club’s long-term success. We talk about his upbringing, the role of family, and the responsibility rugby league players have to create positive change across PNG and the Pacific. One thing I’ve always admired about Marcus is his willingness to speak to anyone. This is a quality I would like to learn. I really enjoyed this conversation and the stories Marcus shared. Albert Kelly is one of the most naturally gifted rugby league players I’ve ever played with and against — but what people don’t always see is the hard work he puts in behind the scenes to back that talent. In this episode, Albert shares what it was like to grow up in Macksville and Kempsey, NSW, being raised by his hardworking grandparents alongside his younger brother. He speaks with gratitude about the role his cousins played in shaping his skills, and the sacrifices his family made to give him a chance in both school and sport. We talk about what it felt like to win the Challenge Cup in the U.K., the uncertainty that comes with a career in footy, and the mental toll it can take — along with how he works through those tough moments. Albert also shares insights into his self-talk, pre-game rituals, and the value of doing extra work to reach the top level. He also touches on something close to his heart — the need for greater protection of sacred Indigenous sites on this land. This is a raw, honest, and inspiring conversation with a deeply thoughtful player.About David Mead:David played 14 years of professional rugby league, representing the Brisbane Broncos, Gold Coast Titans, Catalans Dragons, and captaining the PNG Kumuls. Alex Johnston: The Man Chasing NRL’s Try-Scoring Record
This conversation was recorded a few years ago, but I’ve updated the description because Alex Johnston is now just six tries away from breaking the all-time NRL try-scoring record — an incredible milestone.Alex has already scored 130 tries in just 160 games, won a premiership in his rookie year, and represented both Australia and Papua New Guinea at international level. His strike rate is rare — and he's still going strong. But this chat goes deeper than his stats. Alex opens up about the person behind the player: his competitive mindset as a kid, the hard work and extra training that shaped him, and why he values education just as much as sport.
