Great Texts of The Bible: Separation from God | 1 Kings 13 | Pastor William Hixson
1 Kings 13 tells a tightly focused story about a man of God from Judah, King Jeroboam, and an old prophet from Bethel, showing how seriously God treats obedience to His word. The chapter unfolds in four movements: a prophecy, a miracle, a deception, and a judgment. Prophecy Against Jeroboam’s Altar (vv. 1–5) A “man of God” arrives at Bethel while Jeroboam is offering incense on his unauthorized altar. He prophesies that a future king of Judah—Josiah—will destroy that altar and desecrate it. As an immediate sign, the altar splits apart and its ashes spill out. When Jeroboam tries to seize the prophet, his hand withers until the prophet prays for him and it is restored. A Command of Total Separation (vv. 6–10) God had given the man of God strict instructions: Do not eat or drink in Bethel. Do not return by the same route. This symbolized total rejection of Jeroboam’s counterfeit worship system. The prophet obeys and refuses the king’s hospitality. The Old Prophet’s Deception (vv. 11–19) An old prophet living in Bethel hears what happened. He finds the man of God and lies to him, claiming an angel told him to bring him home to eat and drink. The man of God believes the lie and breaks God’s command. Judgment on the Man of God (vv. 20–32) While they are eating, God speaks through the old prophet and announces judgment: because the man of God disobeyed the Lord’s direct command, he will die and not be buried in his family tomb. On his journey home, a lion kills him—but does not eat him or harm the donkey—showing this was a divine act, not a random attack. The old prophet retrieves the body, mourns him, and buries him in his own tomb. Jeroboam Still Refuses to Repent (vv. 33–34) Despite the miracles and warnings, Jeroboam continues in idolatry and appoints unauthorized priests. This sin ensures the eventual destruction of his dynasty. Great Texts of The Bible: The Twelve Tribes of Israel | 1 Kings 1-24 | Pastor William Hixson
The 12 tribes of Israel are the family groups descended from the twelve sons of Jacob (whose name God changed to Israel). These tribes became the foundational structure of ancient Israel’s people, land, and identity. The Twelve Sons of Jacob (Israel) Jacob had twelve sons through four women—Leah, Rachel, Bilhah, and Zilpah. Their descendants became the tribes: Reuben Simeon Levi Judah Dan Naphtali Gad Asher Issachar Zebulun Joseph Benjamin How They Became “Twelve” Tribes Although Jacob had twelve sons, the land‑holding tribes are counted slightly differently: Levi did not receive land because they were set apart as priests and temple servants. Joseph’s inheritance was given to his two sons: Ephraim Manasseh This keeps the number of territorial tribes at twelve. Where the Tribes Settled (Book of Joshua) After Joshua led Israel into Canaan, the land was divided among the tribes: Judah — southern region Benjamin — between Judah and Ephraim Ephraim — central hill country Manasseh — both west and east of the Jordan Reuben — east of the Jordan Gad — east of the Jordan Simeon — within Judah’s territory Zebulun, Issachar, Naphtali, Asher — northern regions Dan — originally near the coast, later migrated north Historical Trajectory The tribes first lived as a loose confederation during the period of the Judges. They united under Saul, then David, then Solomon. After Solomon, the kingdom split: Northern Kingdom (Israel) — 10 tribes Southern Kingdom (Judah) — Judah + Benjamin The northern tribes were exiled by Assyria (722 BCE), becoming the “Ten Lost Tribes.” Athens Bible Church presents a consistent identity across its website, podcast platforms, and video channels: a Bible‑centered, Christ‑focused, missions‑minded fellowship serving Athens County, Ohio. What Kings Should Be Doing | Jeremiah 22 | Pastor William Hixson
God holds those in charge to a higher standard; because of the influence they wield over others. The Bible gives its clearest and most detailed rules for kings in Deuteronomy 17:14–20, a passage that lays out God’s requirements for any future king of Israel. These rules emphasize humility, obedience, and dependence on God rather than military power, political alliances, or wealth. Core Biblical Rules for Kings (Deuteronomy 17:14–20) 1. The king must be chosen by God Israel may desire a king “like all the nations,” but the king must be the one the LORD chooses. 2. The king must be an Israelite He cannot be a foreigner; he must be “from among your brothers.” 3. He must not multiply horses Reason: to prevent reliance on military power or foreign alliances instead of God. 4. He must not multiply wives Reason: many wives—especially foreign wives—could turn his heart away from God. (Solomon is the classic example of violating this.) 5. He must not accumulate excessive silver and gold Reason: to prevent pride, greed, and self-reliance. 6. He must write his own copy of the Law The king is required to handwrite a personal copy of the Torah under priestly supervision. 7. He must read the Law daily Purpose: to learn to fear the LORD, to obey God’s commands, to remain humble, to avoid exalting himself above his brothers 8. He must rule with justice and obedience His long-term success and the stability of his kingdom depend on faithful obedience to God’s law. Summary: God’s Vision for a King The biblical king is not meant to be an absolute monarch but a model of covenant faithfulness. His power is intentionally limited so that he remains: humble, obedient, dependent on God, just in judgment, faithful in worship. This passage anticipates both the failures of kings like Saul and Solomon and the ideal kingship fulfilled in Christ. Rules for The Lord’s Supper: Who is Worthy to Join the Feast | Pastor William Hixson
No one is worthy, but if you examine your heart and feel right with God - sit down and join those who love Him. If you are stiff-necked and hard-hearted and not walking in His will - be warned, don't partake. Matthew 26:26–29 “And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed it, and brake it, and gave it to the disciples, and said, Take, eat; this is my body. And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink ye all of it; For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins. But I say unto you, I will not drink henceforth of this fruit of the vine, until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom.” Mark 14:22–25 “And as they did eat, Jesus took bread, and blessed, and brake it, and gave to them, and said, Take, eat: this is my body. And he took the cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them: and they all drank of it. And he said unto them, This is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many. Verily I say unto you, I will drink no more of the fruit of the vine, until that day that I drink it new in the kingdom of God.” Luke 22:19–20 “And he took bread, and gave thanks, and brake it, and gave unto them, saying, This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me. Likewise also the cup after supper, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood, which is shed for you.” Acts 20:7 “And upon the first day of the week, when the disciples came together to break bread, Paul preached unto them…” Acts 2:42 “And they continued stedfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers.” 1 Corinthians 10:16–17 “The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ? For we being many are one bread, and one body: for we are all partakers of that one bread.” 1 Corinthians 11:23–29 “For I have received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you, That the Lord Jesus the same night in which he was betrayed took bread: And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me. After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me. For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord’s death till he come. Wherefore whosoever shall eat this bread, and drink this cup of the Lord, unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord. But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of that cup. For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord’s body.” Athens Bible Church presents a consistent identity across its website, podcast platforms, and video channels: a Bible‑centered, Christ‑focused, missions‑minded fellowship serving Athens County, Ohio. The Resurrection of Jesus: Does it Matter Today | Pastor William Hixson
Jesus warned that many would come using His name and claiming to be the Messiah. Don't be fooled by the great deception and end up in the lake of fire with those it was created for. “For many will come in My name, saying, ‘I am the Christ,’ and will mislead many.” (Matthew 24:5) “Many will come in My name, saying, ‘I am He!’ and will mislead many.” (Mark 13:6) “Do not go after them.” (Luke 21:8) These passages warn that impostors will arise claiming divine authority. False Christs Performing Signs and Wonders Jesus said some deceivers would even perform miracles to appear legitimate. “False Christs and false prophets will arise and will show great signs and wonders, so as to mislead, if possible, even the elect.” (Matthew 24:24) “…to lead astray, if possible, the elect.” (Mark 13:22) This shows that supernatural signs alone are not proof of truth. Warnings About Secret or Hidden Appearances of Christ Jesus warned not to believe claims that the Messiah has appeared in a private or remote location. “If anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the Christ!’ or ‘There!’ do not believe it.” (Matthew 24:23) “Look, He is in the desert… Look, He is in the inner rooms… do not believe it.” (Matthew 24:26) The real return of Jesus will be public and unmistakable. “Another Jesus” Being Preached Paul warned that some would present a distorted version of Jesus. “If someone comes and preaches another Jesus whom we have not preached…” (2 Corinthians 11:4) “False apostles… masquerading as apostles of Christ.” (2 Corinthians 11:13–15) This refers to false teachings that misrepresent who Jesus truly is. The Spirit of Antichrist John warned that many deceivers deny the true identity of Jesus. “Many antichrists have appeared.” (1 John 2:18) “Test the spirits… every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God.” (1 John 4:1–3) This emphasizes the need for discernment. How to Avoid Being Deceived The Bible teaches that believers avoid deception by: Knowing Scripture well Testing every teaching (1 John 4:1) Watching the fruit of leaders (Matthew 7:15–20) Staying faithful to the Jesus revealed in the Gospels Athens Bible Church presents a consistent identity across its website, podcast platforms, and video channels: a Bible‑centered, Christ‑focused, missions‑minded fellowship serving Athens County, Ohio. The Prophet Discouraged by His Own People | Jeremiah 20 | Pastor William Hixson
Not all things are the idea of those who ultimately do the task. The Bible is very clear on this point - over and over and over. Great Texts of The Bible: The Two Redeemers | Ruth 2 | Pastor William Hixson
There are two redeemers in The Book of Ruth which shadow the ultimate reedemer born generations later. Ruth 4 1 Then went Boaz up to the gate, and sat him down there: and, behold, the kinsman of whom Boaz spake came by; unto whom he said, Ho, such a one! turn aside, sit down here. And he turned aside, and sat down. 2 And he took ten men of the elders of the city, and said, Sit ye down here. And they sat down. 3 And he said unto the kinsman, Naomi, that is come again out of the country of Moab, selleth a parcel of land, which was our brother Elimelech's: 4 And I thought to advertise thee, saying, Buy it before the inhabitants, and before the elders of my people. If thou wilt redeem it, redeem it: but if thou wilt not redeem it, then tell me, that I may know: for there is none to redeem it beside thee; and I am after thee. And he said, I will redeem it. 5 Then said Boaz, What day thou buyest the field of the hand of Naomi, thou must buy it also of Ruth the Moabitess, the wife of the dead, to raise up the name of the dead upon his inheritance. 6 And the kinsman said, I cannot redeem it for myself, lest I mar mine own inheritance: redeem thou my right to thyself; for I cannot redeem it. 7 Now this was the manner in former time in Israel concerning redeeming and concerning changing, for to confirm all things; a man plucked off his shoe, and gave it to his neighbour: and this was a testimony in Israel. 8 Therefore the kinsman said unto Boaz, Buy it for thee. So he drew off his shoe. 9 And Boaz said unto the elders, and unto all the people, Ye are witnesses this day, that I have bought all that was Elimelech's, and all that was Chilion's and Mahlon's, of the hand of Naomi. 10 Moreover Ruth the Moabitess, the wife of Mahlon, have I purchased to be my wife, to raise up the name of the dead upon his inheritance, that the name of the dead be not cut off from among his brethren, and from the gate of his place: ye are witnesses this day. 11 And all the people that were in the gate, and the elders, said, We are witnesses. The Lord make the woman that is come into thine house like Rachel and like Leah, which two did build the house of Israel: and do thou worthily in Ephratah, and be famous in Bethlehem: 12 And let thy house be like the house of Pharez, whom Tamar bare unto Judah, of the seed which the Lord shall give thee of this young woman. 13 So Boaz took Ruth, and she was his wife: and when he went in unto her, the Lord gave her conception, and she bare a son. 14 And the women said unto Naomi, Blessed be the Lord, which hath not left thee this day without a kinsman, that his name may be famous in Israel. 15 And he shall be unto thee a restorer of thy life, and a nourisher of thine old age: for thy daughter in law, which loveth thee, which is better to thee than seven sons, hath born him. 16 And Naomi took the child, and laid it in her bosom, and became nurse unto it. 17 And the women her neighbours gave it a name, saying, There is a son born to Naomi; and they called his name Obed: he is the father of Jesse, the father of David. There is more to the book... Great Texts of The Bible: The Fall of Joshua (Jericho) | Joshua 5:13-15 | Pastor William Hixson
Joshua, the leader of God's people, knows that he isn't really in charge. Neither are you and neither am I; fall down before God and ask what He would have you do. AthensBible.Org https://rumble.com/user/AthensBible https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100067703173871 https://twitter.com/AthensBible https://www.youtube.com/@athensbiblechurch https://athensbibleorg.podbean.com Joshua 5:13-15 (KJV) 1 And it came to pass, when all the kings of the Amorites, which were on the side of Jordan westward, and all the kings of the Canaanites, which were by the sea, heard that the Lord had dried up the waters of Jordan from before the children of Israel, until we were passed over, that their heart melted, neither was there spirit in them any more, because of the children of Israel. 2 At that time the Lord said unto Joshua, Make thee sharp knives, and circumcise again the children of Israel the second time. 3 And Joshua made him sharp knives, and circumcised the children of Israel at the hill of the foreskins. 4 And this is the cause why Joshua did circumcise: All the people that came out of Egypt, that were males, even all the men of war, died in the wilderness by the way, after they came out of Egypt. 5 Now all the people that came out were circumcised: but all the people that were born in the wilderness by the way as they came forth out of Egypt, them they had not circumcised. 6 For the children of Israel walked forty years in the wilderness, till all the people that were men of war, which came out of Egypt, were consumed, because they obeyed not the voice of the Lord: unto whom the Lord sware that he would not shew them the land, which the Lord sware unto their fathers that he would give us, a land that floweth with milk and honey. 7 And their children, whom he raised up in their stead, them Joshua circumcised: for they were uncircumcised, because they had not circumcised them by the way. 8 And it came to pass, when they had done circumcising all the people, that they abode in their places in the camp, till they were whole. 9 And the Lord said unto Joshua, This day have I rolled away the reproach of Egypt from off you. Wherefore the name of the place is called Gilgal unto this day. 10 And the children of Israel encamped in Gilgal, and kept the passover on the fourteenth day of the month at even in the plains of Jericho. 11 And they did eat of the old corn of the land on the morrow after the passover, unleavened cakes, and parched corn in the selfsame day. 12 And the manna ceased on the morrow after they had eaten of the old corn of the land; neither had the children of Israel manna any more; but they did eat of the fruit of the land of Canaan that year. 13 And it came to pass, when Joshua was by Jericho, that he lifted up his eyes and looked, and, behold, there stood a man over against him with his sword drawn in his hand: and Joshua went unto him, and said unto him, Art thou for us, or for our adversaries? 14 And he said, Nay; but as captain of the host of the Lord am I now come. And Joshua fell on his face to the earth, and did worship, and said unto him, What saith my Lord unto his servant? 15 And the captain of the Lord's host said unto Joshua, Loose thy shoe from off thy foot; for the place whereon thou standest is holy. And Joshua did so. Athens Bible Church is an independent, non-denominational fellowship group of believers from many different backgrounds, ages, and walks of life. Can I Have Your Lunch | John 6 | P. J. Morales
Pastor in training, Philip Joshua Morales, gives a heartwarming sermon leading into 2026 to the small crowd of believers who made it to the service tonight at Athens Bible Church. He is a blessing to the world from our Father God. Marietta Bible College is a four-year private Bible School whose purpose is to prepare young men and women for Christian service. https://www.mariettabiblecollege.org John 6:1-14 1 After these things Jesus went over the sea of Galilee, which is the sea of Tiberias. 2 And a great multitude followed him, because they saw his miracles which he did on them that were diseased. 3 And Jesus went up into a mountain, and there he sat with his disciples. 4 And the passover, a feast of the Jews, was nigh. 5 When Jesus then lifted up his eyes, and saw a great company come unto him, he saith unto Philip, Whence shall we buy bread, that these may eat? 6 And this he said to prove him: for he himself knew what he would do. 7 Philip answered him, Two hundred pennyworth of bread is not sufficient for them, that every one of them may take a little. 8 One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, saith unto him, 9 There is a lad here, which hath five barley loaves, and two small fishes: but what are they among so many? 10 And Jesus said, Make the men sit down. Now there was much grass in the place. So the men sat down, in number about five thousand. 11 And Jesus took the loaves; and when he had given thanks, he distributed to the disciples, and the disciples to them that were set down; and likewise of the fishes as much as they would. 12 When they were filled, he said unto his disciples, Gather up the fragments that remain, that nothing be lost. 13 Therefore they gathered them together, and filled twelve baskets with the fragments of the five barley loaves, which remained over and above unto them that had eaten. 14 Then those men, when they had seen the miracle that Jesus did, said, This is of a truth that prophet that should come into the world. Major Texts of The Bible: The Lord is My Strength | Exodus 15 | Pastor William Hixson
Look to God for strength when your flesh is weak and wanting. And he left them, and departed. 5 And when his disciples were come to the other side, they had forgotten to take bread. 6 Then Jesus said unto them, Take heed and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees. 7 And they reasoned among themselves, saying, It is because we have taken no bread. 8 Which when Jesus perceived, he said unto them, O ye of little faith, why reason ye among yourselves, because ye have brought no bread? 9 Do ye not yet understand, neither remember the five loaves of the five thousand, and how many baskets ye took up? 10 Neither the seven loaves of the four thousand, and how many baskets ye took up? 11 How is it that ye do not understand that I spake it not to you concerning bread, that ye should beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees? 12 Then understood they how that he bade them not beware of the leaven of bread, but of the doctrine of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees. 13 When Jesus came into the coasts of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, saying, Whom do men say that I the Son of man am? 14 And they said, Some say that thou art John the Baptist: some, Elias; and others, Jeremias, or one of the prophets. 15 He saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am? 16 And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God. 17 And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven. 18 And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. 19 And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. 20 Then charged he his disciples that they should tell no man that he was Jesus the Christ. 21 From that time forth began Jesus to shew unto his disciples, how that he must go unto Jerusalem, and suffer many things of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised again the third day. 22 Then Peter took him, and began to rebuke him, saying, Be it far from thee, Lord: this shall not be unto thee. 23 But he turned, and said unto Peter, Get thee behind me, Satan: thou art an offence unto me: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but those that be of men. 24 Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. 25 For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it. 26 For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul? 27 For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels; and then he shall reward every man according to his works. 28 Verily I say unto you, There be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the Son of man coming in his kingdom. Behold I Come Quickly | Revelation 22 | Pastor William Hixson
Quick does not mean He is coming right away, like many have believed. What it does mean is that Jesus will show up when the appointed time arrives - instantaneously. Be ready is the warning throughout The Bible. And when I had heard and seen, I fell down to worship before the feet of the angel which shewed me these things. Our Advocate and Propitiation | 1 John 2 | Pastor William Hixson
If you say that you love Him then keep His commandments the best that you can. Strive to be better every day, and in a month. think where you will be? In a year? In a lifetime? AthensBible.Org https://rumble.com/user/AthensBible https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100067703173871 https://twitter.com/AthensBible https://www.youtube.com/@athensbiblechurch https://athensbibleorg.podbean.com 1 John 2 1 My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous: 2 And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world. 3 And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments. 4 He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. 5 But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him. 6 He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked. 7 Brethren, I write no new commandment unto you, but an old commandment which ye had from the beginning. The old commandment is the word which ye have heard from the beginning. 8 Again, a new commandment I write unto you, which thing is true in him and in you: because the darkness is past, and the true light now shineth. 9 He that saith he is in the light, and hateth his brother, is in darkness even until now. 10 He that loveth his brother abideth in the light, and there is none occasion of stumbling in him. 11 But he that hateth his brother is in darkness, and walketh in darkness, and knoweth not whither he goeth, because that darkness hath blinded his eyes. 12 I write unto you, little children, because your sins are forgiven you for his name's sake. 13 I write unto you, fathers, because ye have known him that is from the beginning. I write unto you, young men, because ye have overcome the wicked one. I write unto you, little children, because ye have known the Father. 14 I have written unto you, fathers, because ye have known him that is from the beginning. I have written unto you, young men, because ye are strong, and the word of God abideth in you, and ye have overcome the wicked one. 15 Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. 17 And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever. 18 Little children, it is the last time: and as ye have heard that antichrist shall come, even now are there many antichrists; whereby we know that it is the last time. 19 They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would no doubt have continued with us: but they went out, that they might be made manifest that they were not all of us. 20 But ye have an unction from the Holy One, and ye know all things. 21 I have not written unto you because ye know not the truth, but because ye know it, and that no lie is of the truth. 22 Who is a liar but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist, that denieth the Father and the Son. 23 Whosoever denieth the Son, the same hath not the Father: he that acknowledgeth the Son hath the Father also. 24 Let that therefore abide in you, which ye have heard from the beginning. If that which ye have heard from the beginning shall remain in you, ye also shall continue in the Son, and in the Father. 25 And this is the promise that he hath promised us, even eternal life. 26 These things have I written unto you concerning them that seduce you. 27 But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him. 28 And now, little children, abide in him; that, when he shall appear, we may have confidence, and not be ashamed before him at his coming. 29 If ye know that he is righteous, ye know that every one that doeth righteousness is born of him.
