“Is it just a phase?”… “Am I actually gay?”… “Do you like men or women more?”. Big Bi+ Questions (BBQ) looks to tackle the questions that bi+ people have heard a lot, or questions they’ve asked themselves! Why are these questions so common? How does it make us feel? How have we responded? Why can’t we sit in chairs properly? The hosts have a fun chat about the BBQ of the week with special guests and listener-submitted questions. Is BI+ representation in TV or is it only star trek?
This week on Big Bi+ Questions, we boldly go where plenty of fandom debates have gone before… into the universe of Star Trek and queer representation on television. Tamzyn is joined by Little Jase, Raena, Stevie, Clayton from Geeks Out, and special guest Jon from Hide & Seek. With Raena stepping in as our resident “Trekspert”, we explore how Star Trek has approached gender, sexuality and identity across the decades — from early allegory and coded storytelling to the openly queer characters we’re seeing today. We chat about the risks sci-fi has taken to explore identity, the moments that pushed boundaries (and the ones that didn’t quite land), and why Star Trek has often been ahead of its time when it comes to imagining more inclusive futures. And to wrap things up, everyone around the table shares their two favourite TV shows featuring queer representation — with some heartfelt, surprising and very nerdy picks. Set phasers to fabulous — this one’s for the Trekkies and the queers. The post Is BI+ representation in TV or is it only star trek? appeared first on Big Bi+ Questions.

Are you just doing this for attention?
Are bi+ people really just doing it for attention? On this episode, our guest was L.A. based singer-songwriter Lucy & La Mer, whose music radiates self-love and joy while celebrating multi-gender attracted identity. Lucy let us know about her bi+ identity and activism, as well as her passion for creating music that makes people feel good. Together, we unpacked the harmful stereotype that bi+ people are just doing it for attention, exploring how it shows up differently across genders, how it impacts dating and relationships, and how we can avoid others placing this stereotype on us. Can You Be a Gold Star Bi? (with Stephanie Dogfoot)
This week on Big Bi+ Questions, we’re asking: Can you be a Gold Star Bi? We’re joined by Stephanie Dogfoot — poet, comedian, and cabaret performer bringing their hit Melbourne Fringe show Gold Star Bisexual to life. Together, we unpack where the idea of “gold stars” in queer culture comes from, what it says about validation and purity, and why bisexuality has always been a little too gloriously complicated to fit inside neat labels. Steph shares their story of growing up in Singapore, discovering bi+ identity, and turning that journey into comedy that’s as heartfelt as it is hilarious. We also talk about the bi+ experience across cultures, visibility, and how performance can turn personal identity into community connection. And she share her poem Dear 12 year old self! This week on Big Bi+ Questions, we go on safari — rainbow safari, that is! Join Tamzyn and Raena as they channel their inner David Attenborough to ask: Can you really spot a Bi in the wild? Armed with our Bi+ stereotype quiz, we track down the elusive signs — cuffed jeans, puns, finger guns, and an alarming number of simultaneous beverages — and ask whether any of these truly mean anything at all. Along the way, our guest helps unpack why these jokes stick, what they say about belonging, and how humour and visibility can actually help build community. Hit play for laughter, light-hearted field research, and a dash of truth about bi+ identity,,, LISTEN NOW. What is the importance of Celebrating Bisexual Visibility Day?
Why does visibility matter so much for the bi+ community? Our hosts Jase, Tamzyn and Raena open up about their own perspectives on visibility, from navigating stereotypes to celebrating joy. In this episode of Big Bi+ Questions, we dive into the lived experiences of bisexual sero-discordant (sero-different) relationships — where one partner is HIV+ and the other is HIV-. Our guests, Seth and Cass, join Jase and Tamzyn to share their stories of love, disclosure, stigma, and resilience. We explore what it means to navigate HIV together, the importance of visibility and accurate information, and how stigma can be challenged through openness and connection. Along the way, we talk labels, community, and the changing future of HIV treatment and understanding. What is Bi Imposter Syndrome and How Do We Tackle It?
Have you ever wondered if you’re “bi enough”? Bi imposter syndrome — also called queer imposter syndrome — is that feeling of doubt or fraudulence that can creep in when stereotypes, biphobia and heteronormativity weigh heavily on our sense of self. In this episode of Big Bi+ Questions, we’re joined by Ashley, a registered counsellor specialising in LGBTQIA+ wellbeing, who brings both personal insight and professional experience to the discussion. Together we explore why imposter syndrome shows up in bi+ lives, how it can undermine our relationships and mental health, and the small but powerful steps we can take to challenge it. Ashley shares practical tools for spotting the signs, building community, and replacing doubt with pride and belonging. Repeat along with us: “I am enough. I am valid. I belong.” Connect with Ashley on Instagram at @twogaycounsellors and @thegothcounsellor. Connect with the Big Bi+ Questions team on Instagram @bigbiquestions or email us at [email protected]. Why is there bi+ erasure in the animal kingdom?
Why do so many animals get caught up in the human debate about bisexuality? This week on Big Bi+ Questions, Tamzyn, Little Jase, and Raena are joined by our resident scientist Dr Cat to explore bisexual erasure in the animal kingdom. From bonobos to penguins, lions to Lisa Mitchell’s Animals, we ask: do animals even care about labels, or is that just a human thing? We dive into same-sex behaviour in nature, what it teaches us about diversity, and why anthropomorphising can be both fascinating and misleading. Why are you asking?
The big question in this episode is a little different. It’s not a question that bi+ people get asked a lot and it’s not a question bi+ people ask themselves. It’s a question bi+ people might respond with when asked about their identity – Why are you asking? Raena, Jase, and Dave were joined by JOY presenter CJ, who shared their multi-gender attracted identity journey before we had a chat about how we can respond to questions and comments about our identities. Are bi+ people welcome in the leather community?
Do you want to be part of the leather community but worried you’ll be excluded because you’re multi-gender attracted? Coming out usually doesn’t happen just once, but coming out once can sometimes mean you have to be ‘out’ everywhere. Whilst others may be able to choose where they are ‘out’. Sure, there are some harmful bi+ stereotypes out there but there are a lot of fun ones such as the stereotype that bi+ people can’t sit on chairs properly. On this episode of Big Bi+ Questions, we had a big bi+ chat about where these stereotypes came from, how we feel about them, and how they can help bi+ people feel part of a community. If any of the topics in this episode bring up difficult or intense feelings for you, we encourage you to reach out for support from a trusted friend, community, or mental health professional. Am I Actually A Lesbian?
How do you know if a label still fits? That’s really what this episode’s big question is about – whether that’s someone who currently labels themselves as multi-gender attracted but thinks they might be a lesbian, or someone who labels themselves as lesbian but thinks a multi-gender attracted label might suit them better. The Big Bi+ Questions team were very grateful to be joined by our guest Demetra Giannakopoulos as well as our guest co-host Mia Bizzotto, who shared their experiences and thoughts. How can I be a beautiful ally for the bi+ community?
This episode of Big Bi+ Questions is a little different. Usually the big question of the episode is something bi+ people get asked a lot or a question we ask ourselves. This time around, it’s a question that non-bi+ people might ask: How can I be a beautiful ally for the bi+ community? The Big Bi+ Questions team were grateful to be joined by LGBTQIA+ advocate and educator, Sally Goldner, who shared details of her identity and intersectionality, as well as her love of wrestling, then we had a big chat about how to be a beautiful ally. Am I actually gay?
It’s a question many bi+ people had asked themselves at some point. In this episode, we were joined by Felipe to explore why this question came up, how we have navigated it, and what it might say about internalised bi-phobia, our attraction, and the pressure to “pick a side.” Felipe also shared his journey of discovering his bi+ identity, which involved a move from Colombia to Australia, being supported by Thorne Harbor Health, and finding community with the Melbourne Bisexual Network, now merged with Bisexual Alliance Victoria, becoming a single organisation known as Bi+ Pride Victoria. What label should I pick?
Labels can be empowering, comforting, and a way to connect with community—but they can also feel confusing or limiting. So how do you decide which one (if any) is right for you? Why do bi+ people experience higher rates of poor mental health?
If any of the topics in this episode bring up difficult or intense feelings for you, we encourage you to reach out for support from a trusted friend, community, or mental health professional. You can find a list of organisations you can turn to for support on this page: joy.org.au/support Bi+ people have consistently reported higher rates of mental health challenges compared to both straight and gay/lesbian people, but what are the reasons behind that? In this episode, the Big Bi+ Questions team was joined by relationship counsellor and mental health social worker Anthony Lekkas to unpack this important topic. During the episode, Anthony mentioned a website listing therapists and health practitioners in Victoria, Australia, who have expertise, training, and/or lived experience in various marginalised social groups. You can find the website here: www.vicinclusivepractitioners.com If you want to find out more about the research into bi+ mental health, here are some links to studies: Findings from the Australian ‘Who I Am’ study Findings from a study undertaken in Hong Kong Australian Bureau of Statistics: Mental health findings for LGBTQ+ Australians Connect with us on Instagram @bigbiquestions or email [email protected]. How has bi+ TV representation changed since *that* episode of Sex and the City?
For a long time, bi+ representation on TV was rare—and when it did appear, it often wasn’t great. One infamous example? The Sex and the City episode Boy, Girl, Boy, Girl…, where Carrie and her friends react very poorly to bisexuality. But how far have we come since then? On this episode of Big Bi+ Questions, the team is joined by writer, journalist, and author Patrick Lenton to discuss the evolution of bi+ TV representation. From harmful tropes to more recent portrayals that actually get it right, we dive into how bi+ characters have been depicted over time—and why it matters. Check out Patrick’s work at patricklenton.com and his Substack newsletter, Nonsense. Got a big bi+ question for us to tackle? Are you more straight or more gay?
Are you more straight or more gay? Bi+ people hear this ALL the time, but what does this question even mean and why do some people feel the need to ask it? Is it because they think bisexuality doesn’t exist or maybe because they’re avoiding their own internal identity questioning. On this episode, we’re joined by our special guest Venetia Brissenden, co-host of JOY’s groovy 70’s music show, Living in the 70s.
