101: Legacy Mentor Series: Healing Our Own Birth Story with Jo Kilburn
In this Mentor Legacy series episode, I am introducing you to Hypnobirthing educator and doula Jo Kilburn. Jo welcomed me in as a new educator. We later became President and Vice President of the San Diego Birth Network and loved serving our community together. Jo was one of my early education mentors, modeling non-competitive, hands-on, engaging education. She then went on to show me what "normal" birth looked like - not what has become "normalized" in the birth room of today. Jo shares her 1970s beginnings attending communal home births and explains how birth workers can hold sacred space by adapting to each family's home, boundaries, and energy. She taught me the trick to removing disruptive people in a birth room in a calm and intuitive way so that the mother could stay in her process. Jo also helped me with the art of referring clients to other doulas when I could see that I would not be the best fit. Jo highlights her mentors like Ina May Gaskin, Suzanne Arms, and Anna Verwaal. Anna's message that birth workers often need to heal their own birth stories led into Jo's exploration of her own birth history and her advice to live joyfully and unapologetically. I am excited for you to get to know how Jo helped expand my heart and my ability to connect with birth in a vital way. Let's connect: Have questions or comments for this episode? 100: Gentle Transitions: Planning Ahead Calms The Storm
Today marks our 100th episode (and yes—technology tried to take us out), Ashley couldn't record with me, so I am reading her written intro for the episode. This show's topic is one that we need to begin speaking about and normalizing in our everyday vernacular. While you may want to shy away from this episode, I invite you to lean in and if it's uncomfortable, be curious as to why and see if you are ready to do something about it. In a few weeks my SKOOL classroom will open and "Work on it Wednesdays" begin. More to come in a few weeks but this will lead into our conversation. We are all feeling unprepared and need to be held accountable for getting our shit together - well it starts soon! I share today how my work has expanded from birth into death doula work and aging preparation. Birth and death are the same in so many ways: sacred, vulnerable, and deeply human—and we deserve to talk about them openly. I'm inviting you into the conversations most of us don't want to have: grief, loss, incapacity, and aging. Grief and avoiding the topic doesn't spare us—it just leaves us unprepared. I explain why planning ahead (even just a few key conversations and documents) can make everything 10x easier for the people we love. I also walk you through what I've partially put in place for my own family — POD accounts, trusts, HIPAA/POA/medical directives, passwords—and I share my own end-of-life wishes and the kind of joyful send-off I want. My hope is that we normalize preparation, stop procrastinating, and honor these transitions with more peace, clarity, and love. Let's connect: Have questions or comments for this episode? 099: Andrea's Natural Birth Story: When Baby Has Their Own Plan
I love when 2nd timer parents return to share yet another birth story! Andrea and Juan are back to share their little girls debut into the world and you get to hear the actual 911 call of her arrival! Andrea talks about staying grounded through pregnancy with simple routines like rereading, writing affirmations on the mirror ("your body knows what to do," "your baby knows how to be born"), and focusing on the outcome they wanted while setting fears aside. Andrea also shares how she'd talk to the baby for signs and felt reassured when the baby would move whenever fear came up. Juan believed that the first birth prepped him for whatever this birth had to offer - and he got to put that to the test. The episode reaffirms that your body knows what to do and so does your baby. We still birth with less fear when we go into it educated and well practiced as Andrea and Juan show us in this show. 098: Katarina's Twin Birth: Letting Go of the Plan
Today I sat down with Katarina from Chicago to share her twin birth story and what it taught her about mindset, advocacy, and letting go. Her twin pregnancy was shaped after an early miscarriage made her became more analytical and anxious while trying to conceive. She then got pregnant again and found out she was carrying twins. As a naturopathic doctor, she prepared deeply—through classes, therapy, and hypnobirthing—focusing on the mental and emotional side of birth, not just the physical. And as with most twins - surprises showed up and her birth plans changed within a moment's time. Katarina used our discussion to process and explain what was in her mind throughout her babies' birth. At the end of our talk, what she learned and how she processed it is shared with our listeners. Her biggest takeaway was redefining "natural birth," processing emotions to reduce trauma, prioritizing health over control, and learning how preparation and calm support helped her and Nate parent with confidence. SO many great things in this episode! @yogawithdana Let's connect: Have questions or comments for this episode? 097: Legacy Mentor Series: Jenny West on Trusting Your Voice and Not Getting Stuck in Your Training
In this Legacy Mentor episode, I welcome midwife Jenny West, who was one of my first mentors as I came into teaching Hypnobirthing and practicing as a doula. Jenny adds so much good advice for student midwives and parents in this episode. We talk about how different the midwifery model of care can look in home birth versus hospital settings, and why parents need to do their homework and practice using their voice—including saying no or asking to wait. Jenny shares how an early client request led her to become a water birth midwife after witnessing a confident 10 lb 6 oz water birth, and she challenges birth workers not to get stuck in their training. Lots of education comes from what you witness in the birth room in real time and your clients become your best teachers of what "can be" in birth. One of Jenny's mentors, Elizabeth Gilmore's words also fall into this episode about trusting birth while also trusting your skills. Jenny adds some information for student midwives on practicing critical emergency skills until they're second nature, and also navigating the gray areas of decision-making and when to transfer a birth to the hospital. Jenny emphasizes mentorship, peer review, and timely debriefing to reduce trauma, stay present, and help birth workers remain in practice. Let's connect: Have questions or comments for this episode? 096: Camila's Two Empowering Births in Colombia
Today I'm talking with Camila from Colombia (she took Hypnobirthing in 2022) and today she shares both of her birth stories—what it's like navigating a system with a high C-section rate and lots of "stay in bed" hospital rules, and how she still created empowering experiences. We also touch on her fertility journey with Dr. Leah Gordon (coming off birth control, learning her cycle, and rebuilding trust in her body), walking through a loss, and what helped her get pregnant again. Camila breaks down baby #1(Ines) and how staying calm helped her keep her voice and avoid a C-section. Then baby #2 (Arturo): a much faster labor and barely making it to the hospital on time. Camila always kept in mind that she could choose to feel a certain way about something and also how to read the room to see what method of communication would work best to further what she wanted for her birth. Fighting systems is hard but knowing how to work within them is a game changer! And don't miss her biggest postpartum advice: rest way more than you think you need, especially in those first days—nothing matters more than recovery and caring for your baby. Thank you for coming back to share your stories with us. @drleahgordon is the Naturopathic Doctor that Camila worked with. This is the podcast on miscarriage that Camila referenced. 095: Shanna's Birth Story: 42 Weeks & Learning to Surrender
This show has so many parts to it! Shanna and Eric were in my Hypnobirthing series and Eric was so amazed at their process when I picked up their placenta - he could not stop talking about how awesome his wife was! Shanna and I talk through her journey to becoming a mom- a few losses led her and her husband to a fertility clinic, genetic testing, and ultimately IVF. Important information for parents pre-pregnancy - you may want to look at both sets of genes before you begin trying. We also get into what it looked like to prepare for birth with education, a supportive partner, and a doula she truly connected with—plus how those tools helped her advocate with confidence in the hospital. Shanna shares going past her due date, navigating induction conversations, and making real-time decisions when things didn't go exactly according to plan. We talk about the mindset shift of "surrender," what that can look like during labor, and how those lessons carry right into postpartum and early parenting. We wrap with a few practical encouragements around pelvic floor therapy, lining up breastfeeding support, and why being informed can make everything feel less scary—no matter what direction your birth takes. @doula.lydiakay Let's connect: Have questions or comments for this episode? 094: Mentoring Call with Niki: Working Through the "Dry Seasons"
I'm excited for you to meet Niki, a doula in Houston I've known for about three years. Our work together has always centered on birth work as self work—creative, not competitive. Niki is an amazing person who doesn't give up even though it looks easier to throw in the towel. Niki shares her experience with a clique-ish professional scene that has made networking and consistent client flow difficult. This is a common theme with doulas all over the country. We change this by finding other doulas in our area who are feeling the same way and we change it up! If you are feeling that way - I guarantee there are others. We talk about what to do when business feels stuck—why you have to go where the people are (yes, even Facebook groups), how to get clear on your ideal client through an "avatar" exercise, and why mindset and language matter when things don't go your way. We also talk about seasons of rest, and trusting the cycle of life instead of living in "hurry, hurry, panic." If you're a newer doula feeling isolated, struggling to find referrals, or wondering if you're cut out for this, this episode will help you reset your focus, get clearer about who you're here to serve, and keep moving forward—one step at a time. @mydoulaniki Let's connect: Have questions or comments for this episode? 093: Legacy Mentor Series: Roberta Frank on Midwifery, Birth, and Personal Transformation
Today's show kicks off the Legacy Mentor Series with Roberta Frank, a trailblazing midwife whose impact on my life is indescribable. It is an honor getting to share many of my mentors who have passed on their love, time and advice over the years that I have been in birth work. I credit these people for helping to create the Birth Education Center and all that it has offered. In this episode, we discuss the transformative power of birth, the wisdom of midwifery, and the importance of respecting a woman's natural ability to give birth. And once again, Roberta passes on her observations and wisdom from a lifetime of witnessing birth come into the world. Roberta shares her journey from experiencing a traumatic hospital birth to becoming a pioneering midwife, founding the first state-licensed and longest running birth center in California. Best Start Birth Center just recently closed after being in business over 35 years. We discuss the innate knowledge women possess, the critical role of support and respect in the birthing process, and how birth can be a profound healer of past traumas. This conversation is filled with practical advice for families and birth workers, and a powerful message about trusting the processes of life, birth, and death. 092: A Hypnobirthing Home Birth: John and Taylor's Story
In today's episode, we welcome the home birth story of John and Taylor. Taylor and John took Hypnobirthing at the center and John got the full exposure to what birth could actually look like. Taylor saw something about home birth in High School and the idea stuck! Her "crunchy lifestyle" choices shaped her birth plan and helped her find a midwife. John opens up about moving from skepticism to being fully onboard with his role as they navigated their birth journey together. He admits he's NOT the crunchy one in this relationship. With a baby who showed up early and took his time getting here- it was all about preparation and support. Having the right midwife and doula for them, this episode highlights the profound beauty and natural pacing of birthing at home. The "no pressure to perform" model of birth is a key factor in this being so amazing for this family's experience. @sandiegocountymidwives @yourdoula_julie Let's connect: Have questions or comments for this episode? 090: Breastfeeding Prep and Support: More Info from Dr. Morgan Macdermott
In this episode, I am having Dr. Morgan back to really share as much info as possible to get your research inspired and moving for all things Breastfeeding! I think what I have been seeing more and more over the years is a false sense of preparedness when it comes to breastfeeding preparedness. Parents are so focused on labor and delivery education that they skip breastfeeding due to time constraints or simply feeling like the education is not important. After all - haven't we been breastfeeding for thousands of years? How hard could it be? Dr. Morgan Macdermott, is a naturopathic medical doctor specializing in perinatal women's health. There is so much to talk about when it comes to the importance of EARLY breastfeeding education and support. We cover common pitfalls new parents face, the significance of having a lactation consultant, and practical tips for breastfeeding success. This is the first part of our two-part series, with the second part focusing on postpartum recovery and ongoing motherhood support. Dr. Morgan shares invaluable insights and real-life experiences to help get some terminology into your head and hopefully you will share this information with newly pregnant friends so they can be ahead of the game! 089: Kaitlyn's Birth Story: Navigating Denial and Embracing Trust
Today on the podcast, we get to hear Kaitlyn's birth story. Kaitlyn, a doula and new mom, shares her emotional and practical experience of labor and delivery with us. Kaitlyn and her husband came through my Hypnobirthing series and proved that taking a class earlier than you think you should may be your intuition prompting you! She is also a masterful writer so this episode is a mixture of story and conversation! She opens up about her initial denial as labor began and how that shadowed her experience. Kaitlyn's husband, Alex, played a crucial role in advocating for her and their baby, showing the importance of support and teamwork. We also talk about the importance of community support and postpartum preparation. Kaitlyn's raw recount of her journey allows room for the significance of letting go, trusting the process, and embracing the unexpected. Everyone's birth is different and even if we all prepare the same way - we learn and experience what we need, and it's usually unexpected. 088: Doula Insights: Jessica's Lessons from Hypnobirthing Classes
In this last episode of doula education, you get to meet Jessica, a new doula, as she reflects on what she learned from these parents while attending our hypnobirthing class series. Jessica and I discuss each of the five classes. I have loved seeing what each doula has noticed per class because it shows just how much our own lived experiences influence what we are most needing in birth education. The main topics Jessica pulled from the series was the importance of childbirth education, pushing techniques, the role of partners, and all the ways to stay calm and grounded during labor. We also covered personal experiences, including Jessica's own birth stories when she had NO childbirth education and how they shaped her approach as a doula. Perfect for both new and seasoned doulas as well as expecting parents looking for practical birthing advice. 087: How to Support Surrogacy as a Doula, - Part 4
In this episode, we welcome Jamilah back for Part 4 of our Surrogacy series. This show is specifically for doulas but Jamilah also adds in some information for those of you who are considering becoming a surrogate! Supporting a surrogate and the family they are working with has some nuances for sure. Jamilah wants you to feel very prepared from the first interview through the postpartum time. We cover common surrogacy terms, the emotional and physical challenges surrogates face, the necessity of trauma-informed care, and the often overlooked postpartum support. I was also surprised by so much of the information including that most surrogates DON'T hire a doula! It's way more common to hire a postpartum doula for recovery. My mouth is still on the floor from that one! Whether you're a doula, surrogate, or intended parent, this conversation sheds light on the intricate journey of surrogacy and the indispensable role of doulas in fostering a supportive birthing environment. We are back with another Doula education episode - although parents will also learn a lot with these perspectives! In this show, I get to chat with Shannon, a new doula who's bringing her unique perspective as a childless doula. Shannon and I talk about each of the five classes, discussing everything from reframing fears to the beauty of comfort measures and the importance of following your intuition in birth work. Shannon shares her personal journey, bits and pieces from our classes, and how these experiences have empowered her in her doula journey. We also talk about the power of intention with your birth preparation, the significance of understanding your own birth story, and how to be fully present for the families you serve. It's so nice for me as an educator to learn from all of this feedback. I hope you enjoy our conversation and the insights that come with it! 085: Brandi's Birth Story, Education To Go With The Flow
Brandi is here for today's show with her Doula Heather Taylor to share her transformative birth experience. Brandi took Hypnobirthing and all the other birth related classes to feel as prepared as possible. She and her husband asked a ton of questions and were on the same page about their plans for a smooth birth experience. They worked HARD to organize their education information and create backup plans for everything. One of her nly fears was having to give birth on her back and she didn't want to feel stuck. She chose a great hospital, midwives as providers and checked all of her boxes off. Then it was up to her to practice, face any fears and do the inner work to let go and trust her experience. Brandi also shares postpartum tips for care and support. The great part about recording a birth episode with their doula included is Heather is able to share professional insights on the things going on in the background of Brandi's experience. Heather also shares her perspective on this couple's incredible teamwork and openness to go with the flow of the birth. @Doula.Heather.Taylor @Bee_hoppyy Let's connect: Have questions or comments for this episode? 084: Transforming through Childbirth Education: Insights with Doula Gurleen
Hey everyone! We actually have three of these special episodes in our show's lineup! Education is so key for parents but equally as needed for new doulas. As doulas take childbirth education from different instructors, learning different methods - they're ability to meet more needs with the families they serve is undeniable. Every family has such different perspectives and there's not one perfect course for everyone. Understanding what is available in a doula's own location as well as what is available online, is critical for being able to recommend education matches for parents. This show is great for new parents to hear as well as new doulas. In this episode, we welcome Gurleen, a newer doula who recently completed our five-week Hypnobirthing series. Gurleen shares her takeaways from each class, like demystifying birth myths, the importance of connection and touch, and embracing natural body instincts during labor. 083: Our Story of Home Birth: Becca and Kyle
In this episode, Care welcomes back Kyle and introduces Becca as they recount their unique and emotional birth story. Becca called me for classes when she was only two months along and we started her birth prep with that phone call. Her friend Kaitlyn is a doula and prompted her to call early so we could get a handle on her initial anxieties in early pregnancy. Coming from a small town in Nevada this couple had to organize a home birth differently. We talk about the decision to have a home birth at their midwife's home, the intensity of labor, and the unexpected turns that showcase the importance of having a supportive and skilled birth team. Throughout their story, they emphasize the significance of good communication, the value of a supportive community, and being able to adapt to the ever-changing turns of pregnancy, birth, and parenthood. Their experience highlights the unpredictability of birth and the importance of preparation, flexibility, and support systems. We can only plan for so much and that's when the trust and preparation kick in! 082: Birth Education: A Father's Experience
It's a dad show! Kyle wanted his own chance to talk about his journey into fatherhood and next week Becca comes in to share their birth story! In this episode, I get to introduce you to Kyle, a new father and military veteran. When Kyle came into Hypnobirthing, he was initially hesitant and skeptical and it was evident from his face lol! But something switched as classes went on and Kyle shares how understanding his role in the birthing process and demystifying the act of childbirth changed his fear into curiosity and anticipation. Kyle credits the birth education for both he and his wife as the profound change their relationship experienced and his newfound respect for the birthing process. The show highlights the importance of communication, understanding, and mutual support in preparing for parenthood. It's a powerful testament to the impact of thorough birth education, partnership, and emotional intelligence in navigating the journey to parenthood. 079: A Journey Through Hypnobirthing and Parenthood: Angel and Joe's Homebirth Story
In today's episode, I welcome Angel and Joe, first time parents who are sharing their homebirth story. They took all the notes from Hypnobirthing and adapted those tools for their birth. For those of you who haven't considered a homebirth, notice how this process was all about supporting the couple - whatever they needed, their team was on it. The preparation for a homebirth is just as important as it is for a hospital birth but has a personal birth team who is just as invested that it stays low risk and healthy. Natural birth takes planning and extra backup plans so safety and feeling safe is always there. We discuss their initial fears, the various therapies and wellness practices they used before birth, and the detailed events of their labor and birth process. There is a special bit of vulnerability in this show as Angel narrates the emotional and physical journey they experienced during pregnancy. Angel also wrote a Substack series that I will share following this episode that explores a deeper side to this "life journey." Joe describes his side by side role and the miraculous moment of witnessing their child's birth. They also touch on the struggles and eventual triumph in breastfeeding, appreciating the importance of community support and professional guidance. This heartfelt conversation provides a deep dive into the real and raw emotions of parenthood and the significance of preparing for both birth and postpartum life. 075: The Road to Surrogacy, Part 1
We are excited to introduce you to Jamilah in today's show. Ashley and I just had our headshots taken by Jamilah and her story is just too good not to share! Jamilah is almost due with her surrogate baby and we are discussing the backstory as to why she moved towards surrogacy. In this show, Jamilah shares the inspiring stories of her two birth experiences and how her mindset of fearlessness, instilled by her mother, helped her embrace labor without fear. She shares the birth of her daughter Hazel, navigating through labor with a strong sense of determination and trust in her body. Some amazing parts to that hospital story! Jamilah then talks about the birth of her son Max. Both births were unmedicated with full labor denial. Labor denial is a gift Ashley and I wish we could give every family on a silver platter! Jamilah describes her second birth as a transformational experience marked by the unparalleled care and support she received from San Diego Community Birth Center. Emphasizing the importance of mindset and body autonomy, Jamilah's birth stories are a testament to the beauty and power of birthing with intention and support. @sandiegocommunitybirthcenter @jamilahallencreative Let's connect: Have questions or comments for this episode? 074: Kasondra and Zach's Natural Birth Story
The video for YouTube and Spotify will be up shortly! For now, please enjoy our audio version. In this episode, we have a birth story featuring Zach and Kasondra, a couple who recently welcomed their newborn into the world. In Hypnobirthing class we learned about their love of surfing and always being in the water. Kasondra is also an opera singer so she came into class with expectations on how her breathing techniques would go during labor – and they worked with an added surprise. Throughout the podcast, Kasondra discusses her decisions along the way to support the natural birth she wanted. Zach, talks about what he learned in childbirth classes that helped him create a solid role as a support system during Kasondra's labor. The couple emphasizes the importance of thorough preparation, maintaining a calm and positive attitude, and trusting the process, while highlighting the significance of active communication and teamwork throughout pregnancy and childbirth. They kept things light and fun throughout the unexpected turns of their labor, celebrating joyful moments despite the inherent unpredictability. We end the episode with insights on postpartum recovery and advice for expectant parents, coming back to the power of knowledge, preparation, and a supportive partnership during this transformative life experience. 073: Doulas - The Art of Holding Space and Allowing
In this episode, Ashley and I are talking about the sacred aspects of being a doula and how the ultimate role is to 'hold space' for birthing families. What IS holding space? Since it's different for everyone - we want you to define it for yourself and how it works for each family you serve. We have found over the years that it's incredibly hard to hold space if we find ourselves needing or wanting to control birth outcomes, come into birth work with a savior complex, or if we can't embrace the discomfort that comes with witnessing labor and birth. We share personal experiences and emphasize the importance of sustaining a career in doula work by finding balance and setting aside personal biases. It's about meeting families where they are, supporting them through their journey, and understanding that OUR PRESENCE ALONE is the cornerstone of effective doula support. 072: Embracing the Intensity of Labor
This episode is a workshop-style conversation designed to help you tackle your fears and equip yourself with the tools and mindset needed for a positive birth experience. I'm not gonna lie - this conversation got juicy with ideas and information to reshape your thoughts about pain and gathering the courage to use your abilities to become what you have not. Ashley was on fire in this conversation! In our Hypnobirthing series we challenge the common narrative of avoiding pain, asking why we steer clear of the lessons pain brings. What if you were to accept the pain or discomfort instead of wasting all of your energy trying to avoid it? We believe you should frankly talk about pain during pregnancy, labor, and postpartum. As long as we avoid the topic - we are putting off the ways to prepare for it. The discomfort experienced during labor is subjective to who it is happening to. It's simple for some to manage and harder for others. You can actually work with it if you walk towards it instead of run from it - spoiler alert - it may hurt less! Pain can be such a mental game, shaped by our skills and life experiences. We're talking about the importance of education, mental preparation, and embracing discomfort as a natural part of the labor process. Join us as we unpack strategies for managing labor pain and explore how facing these challenges can transform you into a stronger, more resilient parent. Low pain tolerance comes up A LOT when women talk about wanting to have a natural birth. In fact, tune in next week because we decided to do a full episode on it. 070: Processing Fears: Nikki's Fertility Journey
I begin with a mini disclaimer about the audio and video quality due to the last day of Mercury retrograde. Despite the production challenges, we have an important and heartfelt conversation for you today. I want you to meet Nikki, who is joining my Hypnobirthing series, and this is our first face-to-face talk. Nikki shares her deeply personal and emotional fertility journey, which includes unexpected pregnancies, miscarriages, and the associated medical experiences. Nikki is still early in her pregnancy and so she came today to get some early help in reducing the fears she has around her upcoming birth. The sooner you can address worries and get ideas of how to manage them, the more you can enjoy the remaining weeks with your baby. We are both on the same page with the importance of advocating for oneself in the medical system, and Nikki is already doing that and off to a good start. Nikki is also really good at taking a step back and asking, "why?" when she hears something that doesn't sit right with her. We discuss some solutions and create some ways to practice letting go of her current fears. We emphasize the importance of trusting one's body and intuition, the words we choose to use in preparing for birth, and the transformative nature of motherhood. We hope to provide support and understanding to others on similar journeys. Nikki is also an artist! In this episode, I welcome April to share her labor denial birth story and the journey of overcoming fears related to pregnancy. April opens up about her past struggles with an eating disorder and how it impacted her initial fears of weight gain during pregnancy. This is an issue that many women face in pregnancy and isn't talked about enough in my opinion. April emphasizes the importance of mental health, surrendering control, and trusting one's body and baby throughout the process. She put in the work to figure these things out for herself before labor began. She also talks about the necessity for open communication between partners to navigate postpartum challenges with practical advice. April also talks up her awesome birth support, her husband, doula Lydia and her mom who was also there for the birth. 067: Hannah and Greg's Inspiring Natural Birth and NICU Journey
In this episode, we have an incredible birth story for you. This is a story where Hannah's natural birth was quickly overshadowed by an extensive NICU stay with their son. Hannah and Greg took my Hypnobirthing class early in her pregnancy and did extensive preparation. What started as a planned birth center birth became a hospital transfer due to the baby's early gestation. Hannah had become the "planner for the unplannable" due to her knowing her birth ideals well over a year before she became pregnant. Little did she know that all of that thinking ahead helped her establish great care and an amazing village of support Greg shares how participating in multiple classes helped him support Hannah and plan for different birth scenarios. Together, they discuss the challenges and triumphs of their NICU experience, emphasizing the importance of advocacy, self-care, and staying optimistic. 065: What Goes On My Birth Plan? Creating Effective Birth Preferences
In this episode, we dive into the topic of birth plans, or as we prefer to call them, 'birth preferences.' This is a more energetic view of how to create an plan that fits your family and what's important to you. The internet is filled with templated plans - but how to you keep it specific without overwhelming yourself and the staff? We emphasize the importance of informed consent and how it allows for autonomy during childbirth. We'll cover the difference between hospital and out-of-hospital birth classes and how they can affect your birth plan. Since we don't know what your baby is going to do during labor - we have to go with the flow. That does not mean you just show up with a suitcase at the hospital and wait to see what happens. Quite the opposite. Having solid education about birth, helps you see what's most important for your family and create a plan to personalize the care you receive. If you don't know what the options are - you don't have any. We'll share practical tips for keeping your birth preferences concise, readable, and focused on what's most important to you and your baby. Additionally, we touch on why it's essential to have separate cesarean birth plans and how to communicate your non-negotiables effectively. Whether you're a parent-to-be or a doula supporting expecting families, this episode is filled with insights to help you create a birth environment where you feel respected, heard, and in control. In this episode, Ashley and I are talking about pushing and why we encourage you to advocate for freedom of movement during the pushing phase of labor. You do not have to be on your back and you are "allowed" to move and push in any way that your body is instinctively telling you to push. In Hypnobirthing we have multiple discussions on how to communicate your needs effectively with your birth team, the benefits of moving freely, and the positions that optimize the birthing process. We want you to practice having these conversations with each other during the series and make sure that you and your partner are on the same page with position options and what feels right to your body in the moment. Partners are really good at remembering what you have practiced and how they can help - but it has to be practiced and talked about ahead of time. We also touch upon the challenges posed by traditional medical settings and the history behind common birthing practices. Discover the importance of trusting your instincts, exploring different birthing positions, and communicating your needs without conflict. Be sure to subscribe so you never miss an episode! 062: Alenna's Hypnobirthing Birth Story: A Natural Birth Journey
In our final February love fest episode, I chat with Alenna, who shares her personal Hypnobirthing birth story. From how she and her husband accidentally found Hypnobirthing to what happened on delivery day, Alenna and her husband were on the same page about not using medication and did a lot of proactive practice ahead of time. You may hear about the peanut ball and its magic for the first time in this episode! Alenna did great with remembering to ignore early labor to save energy for the real stuff later. A tip that most of us ignore and then regret later. As a self proclaimed control freak, she allowed herself to go with the flow even as a backup doula was called in because hers was at another birth. Her education and practice enabled her voice to come through and ask the important questions as they presented themselves. Alenna follows up with some great tips and real talk about preparing for birth and postpartum life. Thank you to Seneca for taking the baby and dog on a walk so we could meet up for this conversation - and we missed you! Be sure to subscribe so you never miss an episode! Whether you're planning for a baby or already parenting, this episode is packed with practical advice and heartfelt wisdom. This is the perfect episode to share with a friend who is NOT pregnant yet so they have time to research these principles and see if they are right for them. You can find Jeanne Marie on her website https://voilamontessori.com/ IG @Yourparentingmentor You can find her on YouTube at The Art Of Parenting and her podcast The Art of Parenting is on Apple and Spotify. For her FREE PDF guide for creating a Montessorri nursery Click Here https://voilamontessori.com/nursery-checklist/ The three books mentioned can be found here: https://www.amazon.com/shop/voilamontessori A love letter from your baby-- https://voilamontessori.com/newborns-need-you-to-know/ Quotes from Dr. Maria Montessori's writings: …/… the most important period of life is not the age of university studies, but the first one, the period from birth to the age of six. For that is the time when man's intelligence itself, his greatest implement, is being formed. But not only his intelligence; the full totality of his psychic powers. This new idea has greatly impressed those with some insight into psychic life, and many have begun to study the newborn and the one year old child, who is the creator of the adult's personality. "Children are human beings to whom respect is due, superior to us by reason of their innocence and of the greater possibilities of their future… Let us treat them with all the kindness which we would wish to help to develop in them." "The greatness of the human personality begins at the hour of birth." Let's connect: Have questions or comments for this episode? 060: Connecting with Your Pelvic Floor Health During Pregnancy
In our February love fest we are focusing today on your "nether regions" as we dive into the importance of maintaining a connection with your body during pregnancy. Our guest, Dr. Lauren from Thrive Physical Therapy, shares her experience and expertise on pelvic floor health, from understanding its role and how to keep it flexible and functional, to discussing prenatal pelvic floor therapy. The visuals will best be seen on our YouTube channel. You will see the full scope of the pelvic floor model and see what is done in your first appointment. This is a great baseline for helping you choose a local therapist in your area. As birth educators, we suggest that you get an evaluation of your pelvic floor either before or during pregnancy. It is so important but many don't make the time. Your pelvic muscles bear extra weight from holding your baby for 10 months and then have to push that baby out. Is your pelvic floor it ready? Are you balanced on all sides? Do you have an old tailbone injury from high school cheer that you never addressed? Books and podcasts may tell you to do kegels during pregnancy but so many of us are not connected to what they are supposed to be doing, and how that feels. Having an evaluation ahead of time can make all the difference for your recovery in the postpartum period. We also touch on the significance of pleasure, consent, and the ways to prepare your body for birth. Join us for an informative session that focuses on body awareness, reducing fear, and enhancing your body literacy as you prepare for childbirth. You can find Lauren at ThrivePhysicalTherapy in San Diego(SDThrive.com). And on IG @Thrivephysicaltherapysd. 059: Deepening Connection and Partnership Through the Birth Ceremony with Haize Hawke
We are starting season 3! In this episode, we kick off February with Haize Hawke. As doulas and educators we see a lot of relationship dynamics between couples. Today we are focusing on a similarity that happens with most of our hetero couples. Understanding where men are coming from BEFORE they come into our birth space is a critical piece of information. Our expectations of who and how they should be is sometimes enormously advanced for where we are in birth and in society. Men have only been allowed into the birth space for a relatively short time and there is really no healthy model for how that should look. As we get more educated in connection and vulnerability we can consciously prepare WITH our partners to set attainable expectations that flow moment by moment. Our discussion delves deep into the roles of both partners. Haizes shares strategies for fostering open, loving communication and building a strong, supportive partnership through the transformative journey of childbirth into parenting. The episode highlights the importance of shedding old selves, practicing healthy communication and maintaining a beginner's mind to navigate this profound life experience. You can find Haize for a consultation or Virtual Birth Coaching at HaizeHawke.com. Her practice is in the Los Angeles area and you can DM her on IG or Facebook @IAmHaizeHawke. 058: How to Become a Military Doula and Navigate TriWest/TRICARE Billing in 2025
In this episode especially for doulas, we are covering the new TriWest transition for serving military families. January of 2025 brings new TRICARE provider agreements and hopefully a more streamlined way for billing and receiving timely payments. Be sure to subscribe to our channel on YouTube to see the slides and visuals. A billing video will be coming as the new system rolls out in January that you won't want to miss. Whether you are a new doula or a seasoned one, you are needed in the military doula space. Lydia, a doula with experience in working with military families and TRICARE, joins me to share her experiences and insights into the TriWest changes, including new qualifications, covered services, and billing procedures. One of the biggest changes is with "out of pocket" charges to families. The episode aims to streamline the process for doulas to serve military families, ensuring they are prepared for the updated system going live in 2025. We also cover the deadlines for getting your previous claims in for clients of 2024. 057: Keeping Your Power Workshop™ - with Traci Doula
In October, we hosted Traci for her 2 day workshop attended by both Doulas and Childbirth Educators. In this episode, Traci Doula returns to our podcast to hear feedback about her impactful workshop 'Keeping Your Power™ for Doulas.' I invited Lydia and Jenna to come on as special guests to tell some of the ways the workshop is shifting their birthwork for the better. Our conversation delves into the importance of doulas understanding their own personal stories/habits from their upbringing and how that shapes their interaction with families and in the birth room. We talk about the importance of establishing solid boundaries, building trust and enhancing their communication skills to better support families. As a childbirth educator who was already teaching advocacy in my classes, this workshop gave me better words and visuals to use that has better brought out the empowerment that parents already hold inside of them. Birthwork is so much deeper than attending a birth and doing a hip squeeze. The emotional, spiritual growth that can spread through your personal life is there for discovery. Traci's workshop opens up those doors and joins people together who are ready to do the work. The episode highlights the power of self-advocacy, centering the family's voice, and the transformative experience of building resilient and empowering births. You can find Traci at https://tracidoula.com/ as well as on IG @doulatraci and on Tiktok @TraciDoula4 This episode wraps up Season 2 and we will see you all in February for a month of connection, sex and communication episodes!! 056: Early Breastfeeding Education with Dr. Morgan MacDermott
In this episode, Dr. Morgan MacDermott joins me to discuss holistic approaches to breastfeeding, and to address common misconceptions and myths. Breastfeeding definitely has a learning curve and needs to be researched well ahead of a baby being in your arms. We somehow miss the memo that there is a whole other world AFTER the labor and birth we have prepared for. Your feeding journey with your baby may even deserve more preparation time. We delve into the importance of prenatal breastfeeding education, understanding latch issues, and the critical role of support systems. Dr. MacDermott shares insights from her own experiences with breastfeeding complications like mastitis and oversupply, offering practical advice and resources for new families. Dr. Morgan, with her incredible support system and knowledge before the birth of her first child, seemed to stump the experts with what problems kept presenting. Dr. Morgan created a Mastitis Ebook to help you prepare early and confidently know where to start with any issues that may arise with breastfeeding. You can purchase that here: https://milkmedicine.com/mastitis-manual/ With Dr. Morgan's real life insights, our conversation emphasizes the need for realistic preparation and the benefits of community support to ensure a successful breastfeeding journey. 054: Katie's VBAC - a Transformative Journey from Hospital to Home Birth
https://www.birtheducationcenter.com/podcast/katies-vbac-a-transformative-journey-from-hospital-to-home-birth/In this episode, Katie contrasts her two births. Her first birth led to a cesarean that was unplanned and unwanted. Katie's hope is that her lessons can serve as teaching tools and warnings for new parents to get educated early, find the best support and be aware that you have intuition when it comes to birthing your baby. Katie discusses what red flags showed up along the way, her regrets in feeling it was too late to switch providers. Katie recognizes where she could have done more as far as education and understanding what "Birth Culture" really looks like in the Untied States. She said it took a lot of therapy and self-awareness to see how her birth unfolded and how that gave her the tools to change things up for the second birth. Her postpartum was tough and she credits that to the trauma that she experienced with her birth. Her choice to give birth at home the second time around was due to the research and data showing how much safer it was for the outcome that she wanted. Once again, her hope is to encourage expectant mothers to educate themselves, interview care providers, and make personalized, informed decisions for a more empowering birth experience. 053: How To Have a VBAC: Part 3, Emotional and Physical Readiness
Episode three of our VBAC series delves into the "journey" of preparing for a Vaginal Birth After Cesarean (VBAC). We cannot emphasize enough the importance of emotional and physical readiness. We want you to look at your stuff- the challenging stuff and the parts that have hurt or disappointment around them. We have found that parents who can be really honest with themselves, possibly look at their birth from other angles and gather more support, have better births the second time around. We talk about the significance of storytelling, ownership of past birth experiences, and the role of vulnerability in healing and growth. We will help you explore the impact of fears, the value of education, and the support from therapies and spiritual practices. This discussion also covers recommendations for resources like Hypnobirthing, VBAC classes, and therapies, offering some solid ideas for those seeking a different birth outcome with empathy and informed decision-making.
