You're Not Bad With Money, You're Just Exhausted

💤💸 Because exhaustion is expensive. You already know sleep deprivation affects your mood, focus, reaction time, and health. But what most first responders don’t realize is that being chronically exhausted also impacts your financial decisions—and not in a good way.In this episode of Budgets for Badges, we’re diving into the very real connection between sleep, stress, shift work, and money habits. Because when you’re running on caffeine, cortisol, and four hours of broken sleep, your brain starts making decisions based on survival and convenience—not long-term strategy. We talk about:Why sleep deprivation increases impulsive spendingThe “I deserve this” spending cycle after hard shiftsHow exhaustion affects budgeting, communication, and financial disciplineThe overtime/spending loop that keeps many first responders stuckWhy many money fights are actually stress-and-fatigue fights in disguisePractical ways to create financial systems that still work when you’re exhaustedThis episode isn’t about guilt. It’s about awareness.Because you’re not bad with money…you might just be tired.🎧 Tune in and learn why improving your finances might start with improving your sleep.Follow us on IG:Budgets for Badges: https://www.instagram.com/budgetsforbadgesRebecca Jameson: https://www.instagram.com/bluelinemoneycoachChris Harksen-Lucero: https://www.instagram.com/beyondthenumbersbn

Your Retirement Account Called… It Wants Its Money Back

Borrowing from your retirement account sounds responsible, right? No bank. No credit check. You’re “paying yourself back.”What could go wrong? In this episode of Budgets for Badges, we’re breaking down the truth behind borrowing from your future—whether it’s a 457 loan, TSP loan, 401(k), or even tapping into your home equity. Because while it might feel like a smart, controlled move in the moment, the long-term cost is often much bigger than most first responders realize. We talk about:Why borrowing from yourself feels safer than it actually isThe real cost of lost compound growth (and why it matters more than interest)What happens if your career, health, or income changes mid-repaymentThe hidden risks of relying on overtime to “make it work”When borrowing might make sense—and when it’s a red flagBetter alternatives that protect your future instead of pulling from itBecause the truth is… your retirement account isn’t a backup plan for today’s problems. It’s the plan for your future. And every time you dip into it early, you’re asking your future self to work harder to catch up.🎧 Tune in and learn how to protect your long-term wealth—without unintentionally sabotaging it.Follow us on IG:Budgets for Badges: https://www.instagram.com/budgetsforbadgesRebecca Jameson: https://www.instagram.com/bluelinemoneycoachChris Harksen-Lucero: https://www.instagram.com/beyondthenumbersbn

Pride Is Expensive: Cutting Your Losses as a First Responder

In the first responder world, perseverance is a badge of honor. You don’t quit. You push through. You stay committed—no matter what. But when it comes to your finances, that same mindset can quietly cost you thousands. In this episode of Budgets for Badges, we’re diving into the sunk cost fallacy—the tendency to keep investing time, money, and energy into something simply because you’ve already put so much into it. Whether it’s the truck that keeps breaking down, the side hustle that never took off, the house that’s draining your budget, or even a financial decision made years ago, pride can make it incredibly hard to walk away. We’ll explore why first responders are especially vulnerable to this trap, how pride and identity influence financial decisions, and most importantly, how to shift your mindset from “sticking it out” to making smart, forward-looking choices. In this episode, you’ll learn:What the sunk cost fallacy is and how it shows up in everyday financial decisionsWhy first responder culture can make it harder to cut lossesReal-life examples of expensive pride in actionA practical framework to evaluate whether it’s time to walk awayHow to make confident financial decisions without feeling like you’ve “failed”Because cutting your losses isn’t quitting—it’s reallocating your resources to build a stronger future.🎧 Tune in now and learn how to stop letting yesterday’s decisions dictate tomorrow’s financial freedom.Follow us on IG:Budgets for Badges: https://www.instagram.com/budgetsforbadgesRebecca Jameson: https://www.instagram.com/bluelinemoneycoachChris Harksen-Lucero: https://www.instagram.com/beyondthenumbersbn

Your Budget is on Cruise Control...But Who's Directing Traffic?

Autopay is set. Subscriptions are renewing. Bills are getting paid. On paper, everything looks like it’s running smoothly. But here’s the real question: is your money on autopilot…or are you just not paying attention? In this episode of Budgets for Badges, we’re diving into the difference between mindless spending and mindful automation. Because while financial autopilot can be a powerful tool for building wealth, it can also quietly hide bad habits, creeping subscriptions, and spending that no longer matches your priorities. We talk about:The psychology behind why automated spending feels “invisible”How autopay can mask financial problems instead of solving themWhy first responder schedules make autopilot both helpful and riskyThe difference between intentional systems and accidental neglectSimple ways to automate your finances without losing controlAutomation should make your financial life easier—not put your budget in the ditch while you’re not looking.Because it’s one thing to put your money on cruise control…but someone still needs to be directing traffic. 🚨💸Follow us on IG:Budgets for Badges: https://www.instagram.com/budgetsforbadgesRebecca Jameson: https://www.instagram.com/bluelinemoneycoachChris Harksen-Lucero: https://www.instagram.com/beyondthenumbersbn

Some months you’re stacking overtime like it’s a competitive sport.Other months you’re staring at your schedule wondering where all the hours (and the money) went.Welcome to financial life as a first responder. In this episode of Budgets for Badges, we’re breaking down the reality of financial seasons—the feast, the famine, and everything in between. The Psychology of Cash vs. Credit: Why Your Wallet Goes 10-8 but Your Card Goes Rogue

Why does spending $100 in cash feel painful…...but spending $100 on a card feels like it barely happened? In this episode of Budgets for Badges, we’re breaking down the psychology behind how we spend money—and why cash, debit, and credit cards hit very differently in the first responder household. When your job runs on adrenaline, stress, sleep deprivation, and convenience, your brain is not exactly wired to make calm financial decisions. And that’s not a character flaw—it’s biology. We talk about:Why cash spending feels more “real” than swiping a cardHow credit cards disconnect pain from purchaseThe role stress, trauma exposure, and fatigue play in impulse spendingWhy first responders are especially vulnerable to “swipe now, regret later” habitsHow money disagreements often stem from psychology, not mathSimple strategies to create awareness without going full cash-envelope chaosThis isn’t an episode about shaming credit cards or telling you to live like it’s 1993. It’s about understanding why your brain does what it does—so you can build systems that actually work with your lifestyle instead of against it.Because your wallet doesn’t need more discipline. It needs better strategy.🎧 Tune in and learn why your brain treats cash like a crisis—and credit like it never happened.Follow us on IG:Budgets for Badges: https://www.instagram.com/budgetsforbadgesRebecca Jameson: https://www.instagram.com/bluelinemoneycoachChris Harksen-Lucero: https://www.instagram.com/beyondthenumbersbn

We’ll also talk about how to mentally and financially prepare for life after shift work—when your new boss might just be your grandkid or a garden.Whether you’re 25 and think you’ve got time, or 50 and suddenly wondering where the last two decades went—this episode is your wake-up call (minus the sirens).Because retiring with dignity shouldn’t require winning the lottery or marrying rich. You’ve earned this.Calculate Your Pension:# of Years You've Worked x Annual % x Ending SalaryFor example, someone who's put in 25 years and can draw 2.5% at retirement with an ending salary of $100,000 looks as follows:25 x 2.5% = 0.6250.625 x $100,000 = $62,500This means, that a person with 25 years in and an ending salary of $100,000 with a 2.5% annual draw on retirement will get $62,500 per year at retirement. Don't forget...this is TAXABLE INCOME. Meaning your actual take-home pay will be less! If you're living off of $100,000 now, can you adjust your lifestyle enough to live off of $62,500? This is why having an alternate retirement account is so damn important!
