Cabernet and Pray

Cabernet & Pray is a podcast for people who still have questions about Jesus but have complicated feelings about the church and Christianity. Hosted by Jeremy Jernigan (a recovering megachurch pastor), each episode pairs a glass of wine with honest conversations about deconstruction, reconstruction, and what it means to explore faith outside the boundaries of the theological mainstream. If you've ever felt like your doubts disqualified you, or wondered whether there's a version of Christianity that can hold your questions without flinching, then you've found your people.

The Congruent Life (with C.E. Jarnagin) | Ep. 72

What do you do when the very people who introduced you to Jesus can no longer recognize the Jesus your faith has led you to? C.E. Jarnagin is a priest, researcher, and author who's asking that exact question in his new book The Congruent Life, and he brings a rare combination of Anglican liturgy, pastoral honesty, and zero tolerance for religious veneer to the conversation. In this episode, Jeremy and Chad work through what it looks like to hold your full humanity inside a faith community, why Christian nationalism and the Jesus of the Gospels are not remotely the same, and how a small church of 160 people (including a dozen former pastors) might actually be doing something the megachurch model couldn't.  Watch the episode on video: https://youtu.be/uTzs1Mo9F2c  ----------------- My new book, The Edge of the Inside, is now available. Finding Beauty in Distinctions (with Bethany Cseh) | Ep. 71

Bethany Cseh is a pastor who spent years standing at a pulpit she wasn't sure she was allowed to occupy, internally justifying each sermon as something other than what it actually was. That tension turned out to be the beginning of a longer, stranger education. In this episode, Bethany joins Jeremy to talk about co-pastoring two completely different churches with her husband, what happened when they tried to merge them into one service, and the counterintuitive theology that emerged from the wreckage: that God is revealed more fully through our distinctions than despite them. They also get into merit badge theology, walking as a spiritual practice, and why John Piper is the last person you want picking out a wine for you. Church as a Public Library (with Beau Stringer) | Ep. 70

Beau Stringer spent years as a lead pastor in evangelical spaces. He's on the other side of that now, working in adult discipleship at one of the largest United Methodist churches in the country and making the case that mainline churches are the best thing most deconstruction-adjacent Christians have never heard of. His image for them: public libraries. Quiet, scattered through communities, not selling anything, full of wisdom, and genuinely open to everyone, including the guy with the shopping cart and all his belongings. In this conversation, Beau and Jeremy dig into how you read the violence of the Old Testament alongside the Sermon on the Mount, why faithfulness sometimes looks like a shrinking church, what happens to a pastor's theology once the job stops limiting his imagination, and why grief might be the most honest response to leaving behind a faith tradition that raised you. Psychological Safety (with Anthony Parrott) | Ep. 69

What does it actually take for a church to be a safe place? Anthony Parrott, co-pastor of Table Church DC, has spent 17 years in ministry and a lifetime accumulating enough theology to know when it stops being honest. In this conversation, he and Jeremy trace a winding path through open and relational theology, trauma competency, why packaging spiritual formation into a program is its own kind of abuse, and what it looks like to pastor a church where the point is not to have it all figured out. Anthony is a guy who will tell you exactly what he thinks about Augustine, John Piper, and a white Malbec he found at Wegmans, and somehow it all fits together. Where Satire Meets Spirituality (with Stuart Delony) | Ep. 68

What happens when a former pastor trades the pulpit for a microphone? In this episode, we sit down with Stuart Delony, host of Snarky Faith and author of The Tribulation Survival Guide, for a conversation that is equal parts hilarious and razor-sharp. Stuart unpacks why fear-based theology is basically a drug dealer's business model, how humor functions as a Trojan horse for spiritual healing, and why the end-times obsession that haunted so many evangelical childhoods is, frankly, more pagan than Christian. Pour yourself a glass — the slippery slope has never been this fun. Faith and the Public Square (with Collin Packer) | Ep. 67

This week on Cabernet & Pray, we sit down with Collin Packer for a conversation that feels as honest as it is necessary. Collin shares his journey from fundamentalist pastor to working in the Texas State House, from not voting for 12 years out of theological conviction to wrestling with what it means to let “justice take a side.” We talk about racial reconciliation, political discipleship, the cost of speaking prophetically in church spaces, and why some of the best conversations about faith might happen around a table with bread and wine instead of behind a pulpit. This episode offers a hopeful, deeply practical vision of what a Jesus-shaped presence could look like in our cultural chaos. The Mountains Shall Drip Sweet Wine (with John Anthony Dunne) | Ep. 66

What if the Bible’s most familiar wine stories have been quietly misunderstood all along? In this episode of Cabernet and Pray, Jeremy sits down with New Testament scholar John Anthony Dunne, author of The Mountains Shall Drip Sweet Wine, to uncork what Scripture actually says about alcohol. From the wedding at Cana to the myth of “biblical grape juice,” they explore how modern anxieties have flattened a far richer, more embodied faith. Find out why wine was never just a metaphor, but a theological statement about God’s generosity and presence in the ordinary.  Watch the episode on video: https://youtu.be/PpMW6yzzJmA ----------------- Want to read my upcoming book BEFORE it comes out on March 31, 2026? The Atheist Pentecostal (with Colten Barnaby) | Ep. 65

What happens when someone can no longer believe in God—but still can’t let go of Jesus, Pentecostalism, or the church that formed them? In this episode, Jeremy sits down with Colten Barnaby, who calls himself an “atheist Pentecostal,” to talk honestly about losing faith without losing integrity. They explore church history, certainty vs. honesty, why pretending belief can feel like a moral failure, and how many people leave Christianity not because they hate Jesus, but because God has been presented as a monster. It’s funny, vulnerable, unsettling, and surprisingly hopeful—a conversation for anyone who’s tired of fake answers and still hungry for truth, meaning, and a better imagination for what faith could be. Cathedrals of Connection (with Matt Mattson) | Ep. 64

What if the most sacred spaces in your life aren’t churches at all, but ordinary moments of shared humanity? In this episode of Cabernet and Pray, Jeremy sits down with author and spiritual guide Matthew G. Matson to explore Cathedrals of Connection—a vision of faith that shifts holiness away from institutions and back into the space between people. Over a glass of wine, they talk about decentering programs, resisting performative spirituality, and rediscovering God in silence, conversation, parenting, travel, and the everyday rhythms we usually rush past. It’s an honest and gently subversive conversation for anyone who senses that Christianity has lost something vital—and wonders if connection itself might be where the divine has been hiding all along. Beyond Deconstruction (with James McGrath) | Ep. 63

What comes after deconstruction? In this episode, I sit down with James McGrath to talk about what it looks like to move beyond tearing faith down and begin the slower, braver work of rebuilding it with honesty, humility, and curiosity. We wrestle with Bible scholarship, doubt, certainty, and why faith that looks like Jesus may require fewer answers and more courage. If you’ve ever felt stuck between what you can no longer believe and what you’re not sure you can believe yet, this conversation is an invitation to keep going. The Courage to Differ Graciously (with Brian McLaren) | Ep. 62

What if the real spiritual crisis isn’t disagreement, but how we disagree? In this episode, we explore why certainty has replaced curiosity and why faith so often becomes brittle instead of beautiful. We see what happens when winning arguments matters more than loving people. This isn’t a call to “be nicer,” but a challenge to examine how fear shapes our theology and fractures our communities—and whether following Jesus should make us better at holding tension, not worse. This conversation invites you to practice a courage the church desperately needs right now: the courage to differ graciously. In this episode, I sit down with David Hayward—yes, the Naked Pastor himself—to talk about the root systems beneath our beliefs, the fruit they produce in real life, and why so many of us feel torn between what we were handed and what we’re becoming. If you’ve ever wondered whether God can survive your questions… or if your questions might actually be the doorway into something truer… this conversation is going to hit you right where you live. Between the Pulpit and the Pub (with Gavin Linderman) | Ep. 60

What happens when a pastor decides the real mission field isn’t inside the church walls… but somewhere between the pulpit and the pub? In this episode, Gavin Linderman and I dive into the beautifully messy overlap of Anabaptist theology, creativity, and craft beverages. We talk about churches that accidentally turn coffee shops into Christian bookstores with bad espresso, bars that become modern monasteries, and the wild idea that the best conversations about Jesus might happen over a pint rather than in a pew. What if doing the right thing still made you guilty? Hell Bent (with Brian Recker) | Ep. 56

What happens when Christians start rethinking the very idea of hell? In this episode of Cabernet and Pray, we sit down with Brian Recker to ask the questions many of us were told we weren’t allowed to ask. Is hell really eternal conscious torment? What about annihilation? Could universalism actually be more faithful to Jesus? And how do history, culture, and scripture all play into the pictures we’ve inherited? We pour a glass of wine, get honest about our doubts, and wrestle with what kind of God we actually believe in. If good theology is theology that looks like Jesus, then what does that mean for our view of hell? If you’ve ever felt the tension between fear-based religion and the radical love of Jesus, this conversation might be the permission you’ve been waiting for. Theology with Imagination (with Brian Zahnd) | Ep. 46

What happens when one of the most provocative theological voices of our time sits down with a glass of wine and reimagines everything? It’s bold, it’s challenging, and it’s full of grace. Plus, there are a few surprises, like pipe collecting and Scotch favorites. Curiosity and Poor Eyesight | Ep. 45

What if the only thing separating you from deeper faith… is your doubt? In this episode, we uncork the connection between spiritual curiosity and our inability to see clearly — and why that’s not a flaw, but a feature of real theology. Jesus doesn’t demand certainty. #43: What's the Deal with Hell?

Are there different ways to understand hell in Christianity? In this thought-provoking episode, Jeremy tackles one of the most challenging theological concepts that many struggle with. If you've ever questioned traditional teachings about eternal punishment or wondered if there are other interpretations supported by scripture, this episode offers a refreshing perspective that might completely transform your understanding of Christianity.  Click here to watch the episode on video. Key Points: Three Historical Christian Views of Hell: Infernalism/Eternal Conscious Torment: The traditional view where non-believers suffer eternally in hell. Annihilationism: Those who reject God cease to exist after death (also called "soul sleep"). Christian Universalism: Jesus will ultimately save everyone, though some may go through a refining process after death. Principles for Considering Hell: Good theology should look like Jesus Our view should reflect all New Testament writers Christians should have humility about who is "in" or "out" Your view of hell is not an essential part of Christianity Fear of hell is a cheap motivator to follow Jesus Biblical Foundation: The episode references 1 John 4:16 (perfect love casts out fear) and Romans 2:4 (God's kindness leads to repentance) to establish that God motivates through love, not fear. Wine Featured: 2019 Sequoia Grove Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley) with distinctive herbaceous notes (bell pepper, jalapeño) followed by secondary cherry and red fruit flavors. #42: The Spirituality of Wine (with Gisela Kreglinger)

What if drinking wine was more than just a pleasure—it was a spiritual practice? In this episode, we sit down with theologian and wine expert Gisela Kreglinger to explore the deep connections between wine, faith, and community. Growing up in a German winery, Gisela brings a unique perspective on how wine shapes our conversations, our celebrations, and even our theology. From the role of wine in biblical times to the way it fosters deeper human connection today, this episode will challenge the way you think about your next glass. Click here to watch the episode on video. Key Points: Meet Gisela Kreglinger: Theologian, author, and wine expert who grew up on a German winery. Wine as a Spiritual Practice: Wine isn't just for drinking—it can shape conversations, enhance meals, and even act as a form of prayer. Biblical Roots of Wine: Exploring wine’s significance in Scripture, including the Passover tradition of four cups of wine, Noah’s vineyard, and Jesus’ first miracle at the Wedding of Cana. Cultural Differences in Wine Consumption: How European wine traditions differ from America’s relationship with alcohol and why that matters. Holy Tipsiness: The fine line between drinking as an act of joy and overindulgence. Reclaiming Wine in Christian Practice: How churches have distanced themselves from wine and why Gisela believes it’s time to restore its sacred role. Wines in This Episode: 🍷 2020 Coastline Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon (Paso Robles, California) – A fruit-forward yet balanced cab with notes of blackberry, pipe tobacco, and wet gravel. 🍷 Moulin-à-Vent from the Dichon family (Beaujolais, France) – A full-bodied Gamay with rich complexity, imported by Kermit Lynch. Final Thoughts: This episode isn’t just for wine lovers—it’s for anyone interested in the intersection of faith, culture, and connection. #41: Why Christianity is Unfair

Is karma real? Or does Jesus operate in a way that turns our sense of fairness upside down? In this episode, we dive into one of Jesus’ most radical parables from Matthew 20, exploring why fairness might not be the point—and why that’s actually good news. Grab a glass of wine and join us for a thought-provoking discussion on grace, justice, and what it really means to follow Jesus. Click here to watch the episode on video. Featured Wine:🍷 Destino Red Blend (2019) – Fifth Empire, Portugal A rich and dark blend featuring Touriga Nacional, known for its bold character. Notes of plum and blueberry, balanced with smooth complexity from four different grapes. Key Discussion Points: The Myth of Karma vs. Jesus’ Radical Grace: While karma teaches that you get what you deserve, Jesus flips this idea upside down, offering generosity instead of fairness. The Parable of the Vineyard (Matthew 20): A landowner pays all workers the same wage—whether they worked 12 hours or just one. What does this reveal about God’s character? Fairness vs. Generosity: How do we react when others receive grace that we feel they don’t deserve? Jealousy & God's Kindness: Are we bothered when God blesses those we deem "unworthy"? Personal Reflection: Is Jesus enough for us, or do we need others to "lose" for us to feel like we've won? Takeaway:Instead of keeping score, what if we embraced a world where grace, not fairness, defines our faith? Jesus invites us to welcome others into the vineyard—are we celebrating or gatekeeping? ----------------- Do you want to read the Bible without falling behind? #39: The Worst Chapter in the Bible

What happens when the God of the Old Testament seems unrecognizable next to the Jesus of the New Testament? In this thought-provoking episode of Cabernet and Pray, we tackle what Jeremy calls “the worst chapter in the Bible,” Numbers 31. Together, we confront the shocking themes of revenge, violence, and divine commands that seem incompatible with the love of Jesus. With a glass of Sokol Blosser 2021 Pinot Noir in hand, we explore how ancient contexts and human perceptions of God shape scripture—and what this means for our faith today. Don’t miss this deep dive into the Bible’s most challenging narratives. Click here to watch the episode on video. Wines Featured: Sokol Blosser 2021 Watershed Block Pinot Noir Notes of potting soil, dried leaves, cranberry, raspberry, and clove. A perfect pairing for deep conversations about theology. Key Discussion Points: Introduction to Numbers 31: Jeremy reflects on the challenges faced as a pastor in interpreting the Old Testament. Focus on Numbers 31: a chapter filled with revenge, violence, and troubling divine commands. A Brutal Look at Numbers 31: God commands Moses to wage a war of revenge against the Midianites. Controversial instructions to kill men, women, and boys, sparing only virgin girls, presented as plunder. The unsettling notion of 32 virgins being allocated as God’s share of the spoils. Reconciling Numbers 31 with the Nature of Jesus: The difficulty of aligning Numbers 31 with the nonviolent, sacrificial love exemplified by Jesus. Examples of misinterpretation: Justifying actions like the Crusades by blending Old Testament violence with Christian theology. Historical and Cultural Context: Insights from early church father Origen: When a passage seems unworthy of God, seek deeper spiritual meaning. Greg Boyd’s Cross Vision: God’s willingness to meet people in their context, even when their understanding is limited. Andy Stanley’s Irresistible: The importance of unhitching modern faith from Old Testament practices and covenantal frameworks. A Framework for Interpretation: Jesus as the clearest image of God: “What God looks like when there are no clouds in the way.” Viewing problematic Old Testament passages as reflections of human culture and sin, not divine character. Takeaways for Faith: Christians don’t need to fear difficult scriptures but must read them through the lens of Jesus. Numbers 31 reveals more about ancient Israelites’ worldview than about God’s true nature. The Bible’s ultimate purpose is to point us to Jesus, the unclouded vision of God. Jeremy leaves listeners with the challenge to dig deeper into scripture, trusting that a clearer picture of God emerges through Jesus. Christians can engage with difficult passages and grow a faith rooted in love, humility, and understanding. ----------- Do you want to read the Bible without falling behind? #38: Loving Jesus Too Much

Tozer’s widow that has sparked a surprising amount of debate among Christians. Join us as we dive into what it truly means to balance a love for God with a love for others, all while sipping on a gorgeous 2021 Archers Crest Pinot Noir. This episode will surely challenge your perspective on faith, relationships, and how we express our devotion. Click here to watch the episode on video. Key Points Event Reminder: The Wine and Whiskey Weekend is February 21–23 in Oregon, featuring tastings and deep conversations about life and faith. Find out more here: https://communionwineco.com/events/wine-and-whiskey/  The A.W. Tozer Debate: Tozer’s widow, Ada, famously stated: “Aiden [Tozer] loved Jesus Christ, but Leonard Odom loves me.” This comment sparks questions about whether a strong love for Jesus can coexist with loving others deeply. Tozer’s writings emphasized the centrality of God, yet his personal relationships provide a complex lens for understanding how faith and love intersect. Key Biblical Insights: Matthew 22:36-39: Jesus teaches that loving God and loving others are equally important. Matthew 25: Acts of love toward others are acts of love toward Jesus. Luke 14:26: Jesus uses hyperbole to stress prioritizing God but not at the expense of failing to love others. Listener Reactions: Varied and passionate responses to the original video included victim-shaming Ada, misinterpretations of biblical texts, and defenses of Tozer’s priorities. Highlights the broader issue of separating love for Jesus from love for people, a dichotomy that the episode argues is unbiblical. Wine Feature: 2021 Archers Crest Pinot Noir from Archery Summit in Oregon. Notes of cranberry, raspberry, clove, and mushroom make this refreshing red a perfect pairing for deep conversation. The Challenge: Loving Jesus means seeing Him in those around us, including our spouses, neighbors, and even adversaries. Can you truly love God without loving people? This episode pushes listeners to evaluate their own faith practices. Call to Action: Pour yourself a glass of wine and reflect on how your love for God translates into love for others. Join us for this candid discussion that blends theology, wine appreciation, and a fresh take on what it means to live out your faith. Cheers to loving well!

Or do you see Jesus as the living "Word of God" that John 1 speaks of? We'll wrestle with these questions and more. In this episode, we'll journey through the rich and often paradoxical imagery of the lion and the lamb as presented in Revelation. We'll contrast the popular expectation of a conquering lion with the profound revelation of Jesus as the sacrificial lamb, the only one worthy to wield God's power. We'll also delve into the tension between desiring a predictable, accessible deity and embracing the wild, unexpected freedom of God. We also reframe the hot-button issue of evangelical deconstruction, examining it through the lens of decoding the propaganda embedded within the religious right's ideology. #26: The Fear Peddlers

Click here to watch the episode on video. Today we're diving into a topic that often stirs deep emotions in the Christian community: fear (and the shame that often follows). We'll unpack the roots of fear, often instilled by religious leaders, and challenge it with biblical insights from 1 Corinthians. We’ll also have an honest conversation about the role of fear in religious teachings and how it can shape our beliefs and actions in unhealthy ways. I’ll share personal stories, including an attempt I saw to convert a tough gentleman with scare tactics, and we’ll reflect on whether such approaches truly align with Christian values. Plus, we’ll explore the notion from 1 John 4 that living in love means living in tune with God and why perfect love expels fear. Join me as we question, reflect, and strive for a faith driven by love, not fear. Cheers! Wine in this episode: 2020 Dominio IV Tempranillo Rosé
