Celebrate Recovery at Peters Creek Baptist Church
by Craig Amstone
Celebrate Recovery (CR) is a Christ-centered program that helps people overcome hurts, hang-ups, and habits, which can include emotional, spiritual, or relational struggles. CR meetings offer a safe space for sharing experiences and finding support. The program encourages healing from the inside out, fostering spiritual growth and stronger relationships. There are information sessions available to introduce people to CR and its benefits. It emphasizes that everyone faces challenges and that healing happens one step at a time through God's grace and the support of a community.

The Power to Change
Lesson Content: Divine Power vs. WillpowerThe Exhaustion of Self-Help: In the past, we desperately wanted to change our mental health or situations but found ourselves completely unable to do so. We couldn't free ourselves from our hurts, hang-ups, or habits using our own strength. The True Source of Strength: Philippians 4:13 ("I can do all this through Him who gives me strength"). God's strength is not willpower. It's divine power working in and through you.All-Day Hope: Psalm 25:5 ("Guide me in your truth and teach me... my hope is in you all day long"). Anchor your hope in God so deeply that it sustains us through the entire day—not just during a morning prayer, but "all day long," especially when anxiety strikes in the afternoon.Invisible Realities: Many people today believe their doubts and doubt their beliefs. Love, faith, and God's power are invisible, spiritual realities. We can't see the things themselves, but we can see their undeniable, life-changing results in our actions.Earnest Seeking Brings Reward: Hebrews 11:6. When you earnestly seek Him, He fills your livfe with His love, joy, and presence. Right actions naturally follow as a by-product of walking with Jesus Christ.🌟 Celebrate Recovery at Peters Creek Baptist Church📍 6300 Library Road, South Park, PA Fridays at 6:30 PMAlso gathering on Mondays at 7 PM at Crossroads Ministries in Finleyville.➡️ Not local? The Sentence of Death
The Death Sentence: 2 Corinthians 1:9. Paul acknowledges the extreme mental health anguish he felt. In severe depression, it truly feels like a sentence of death. The End of Self-Reliance:The crushing weight of mental illness breaks our illusion of control. We realize we cannot cure our own minds. The God of Resurrection: The end of the verse: "...but on God, who raises the dead is the core of Christian wellness... relying on the God who resurrects dead things. The New Season: We are officially wrapping up Principle One. This coming Tuesday, May 26, we begin a brand new season titled, "Principle Two: The Hope Principle."🌟 Celebrate Recovery at Peters Creek Baptist Church📍 6300 Library Road, South Park, PA Fridays at 6:30 PMAlso gathering on Mondays at 7 PM at Crossroads Ministries in Finleyville.➡️ Not local? Blurred by Grief
Lesson Content: The Physical Toll of GriefThe Weight of Weeping: Psalm 6:6. David admits he is "worn out from sobbing." Christian wellness means acknowledging that severe depression isn't just in your head; it physically hurts. Flooding your bed with tears is a real, agonizing experience.Blurred Vision: Psalm 6:6. "My vision is blurred by grief." Grief literally changes how we view the world, making everything look dark, terrifying, and hopeless.Biblical Permission to Hurt: The Word of God does not ask us to be numb. It is okay to be completely drained by your sorrow. True Christian mental health recovery starts with raw honesty about our pain.Personal Reflection: "Are you carrying a grief so heavy that it is literally blurring your vision and draining your physical body today?"🌟 Celebrate Recovery at Peters Creek Baptist Church📍 6300 Library Road, South Park, PA Fridays at 6:30 PMAlso gathering on Mondays at 7 PM at Crossroads Ministries in Finleyville.➡️ Not local? Shattered Plans
Lesson Content: Mental Health in the DarknessThe Reality of Depression: Job 17:11 ("My days have passed, my plans are shattered"). Job is expressing a very real mental health crisis. Christian wellness means being honest when your plans shatter and your heart breaks, not pretending everything is fine. The Desires of the Heart: Even in the depths of trauma and despair, the Holy Spirit keeps a flicker of hope alive inside of us.Light in the Darkness: Christian mental health recovery means holding on to the truth that darkness isn't permanent. Jesus Christ is the light, and even when we cannot fully see Him, He is near.Personal Reflection: "Have you been carrying the heavy grief of shattered plans, and are you willing to let the Lord sit with you in that darkness today?"🌟 Celebrate Recovery at Peters Creek Baptist Church📍 6300 Library Road, South Park, PA Fridays at 6:30 PMAlso gathering on Mondays at 7 PM at Crossroads Ministries in Finleyville.➡️ Not local? The Illusion of the Right Way
Lesson Content: The Danger of Self-DeceptionThe Master of Disguise: Proverbs chapter 14:12. A relapse or a poor choice rarely announces itself as a bad idea. Instead, it "appears to be right." It disguises itself as a logical exception, a deserved break, or a safe shortcut. The Lie of Isolation: We talk about how this verse plays out in our recovery routines. The "way that appears to be right" often looks like telling ourselves we don't need a meeting this week, or we don't need to call our sponsor because we are doing fine on our own.Playing the Tape Forward: We cannot just look at the comfortable, appealing beginning of a choice; we have to look honestly at the absolute end of the road.Personal Reflection: "What is a 'safe' path you've been justifying to yourself lately that you know deep down is a trap?"🌟 Celebrate Recovery at Peters Creek Baptist Church📍 6300 Library Road, South Park, PA Fridays at 6:30 PMAlso gathering on Mondays at 7 PM at Crossroads Ministries in Finleyville.➡️ Not local? The Tipping Point
The End of Resources: King David hitting the absolute end of his emotional and physical resources Pain vs. Fear: We only change when our pain finally surpasses our fear. As long as we are more afraid of the truth than we are of the addiction or the habit, we will stay in denial.Facing the Agony: Facing the pain isn't meant to punish us; it’s the only way through it. Denial acts like a numbing agent, but it also traps the infection inside.Personal Inventory: "Of what are you still in denial, or what are you still trying to control in your own power?"The Spiritual Comfort: When we finally face our pain, we don't face it alone. Jesus Christ meets us in the deepest anguish.🌟 Celebrate Recovery at Peters Creek Baptist Church📍 6300 Library Road, South Park, PA Fridays at 6:30 PMAlso gathering on Mondays at 7 PM at Crossroads Ministries in Finleyville.➡️ Not local? The Mirror of Daily Life
Episode 30 Content: The Mirror of Daily LifeThe Micro-Triggers: Daily inconveniences (coworkers getting promoted, a car breaking down) trigger our coping mechanisms. We worry, we pretend it doesn't matter, or we get angry and isolate. The Pride of Comparison: Discuss the trap of looking at the news to feel better about ourselves. The Hypocrisy of Control: Pride blinds us. We are outraged that others won't get help for their unmanageability, while we flatly refuse to reach out for help with our own.🌟 Celebrate Recovery at Peters Creek Baptist Church📍 6300 Library Road, South Park, PA Fridays at 6:30 PMAlso gathering on Mondays at 7 PM at Crossroads Ministries in Finleyville.➡️ Not local? The Illusion of Distance
The "Lost" Reality: We often project our own tendency to pull away onto God, assuming He is the one who left. The Unbreakable Bond: Neither the present, nor the future, nor anything in all creation can separate us from the love of God.Feelings vs. Facts: Separation can feel incredibly real, but it is never permanent. Feelings of isolation are not proof of God's absence. Christ always seeks the lost.Actionable Closeness: What can you do to get closer to God?"🌟 Celebrate Recovery at Peters Creek Baptist Church📍 6300 Library Road, South Park, PA Fridays at 6:30 PMAlso gathering on Mondays at 7 PM at Crossroads Ministries in Finleyville.➡️ Not local? Episode 24 Content: The Fake ExitThe Energy Drain: Trying to escape from pain actually drains away our energy. "Numbing" doesn't just block pain; it blocks our ability to live.Legitimate Ways Out: Contrast the "fake" escapes with the "true escape routes" God provides through His power and grace. Carrying Gaza Gates to the Cross
This episode focuses on the first three verses of Judges Chapter 16. This is a shorter but heavy passage that explores the "gray areas" of our walk—the moments when we think we can flirt with old habits or compromises without consequence, and how God’s mercy often shows up even when we’ve wandered off the path.Local Invitation🌟 Celebrate Recovery at Peters Creek Baptist Church📍 6300 Library Road, South Park, PA Fridays at 6:30 PMAlso gathering on Mondays at 7 PM at Crossroads Ministries in Finleyville.➡️ Not local? Melted Ropes and Living Water
The Trap of Retaliation: Discuss Samson’s reaction to being betrayed. Frame this as a conversation about the "cycle of resentment"—how "he did this to me, so I’ll do this to him" only leaves everyone burned. Contrast this with Christ’s call to forgiveness and surrender.Bound by Our Own: Focus on the 3,000 men of Judah who came to bind Samson. Talk about the pain of being misunderstood or held back by people who should be on our side.Supernatural Strength: Discuss the Spirit of the Lord coming upon Samson so that the ropes "melted" off his arms. Relate this to the power of the Holy Spirit in recovery—how God can break habits and bondages that seem impossible to escape. The God Who Hears the Thirsty: Focus on the end of the chapter (Ramath-lehi). After the great victory, Samson is dying of thirst and cries out to God. Discuss how God opened the hollow place to provide water. Point to Jesus as the Living Water who meets us when we are at our weakest point, right after our biggest battles.🌟 Celebrate Recovery at Peters Creek Baptist Church📍 6300 Library Road, South Park, PA Fridays at 6:30 PMAlso gathering on Mondays at 7 PM at Crossroads Ministries in Finleyville.➡️ Not local? The Thief of Tomorrow
Episode 23 Content: The Thief of TomorrowThe Trust Gap: Use the lesson text to explain that all worry is ultimately a failure to trust God. Discuss the mental health toll of "fretting" over things outside our control.Focus on the Present: Use Matthew 6:34. Emphasize the "Each day has enough trouble of its own" part. Talk about how recovery can only happen in the "Right Now," while worry tries to live in "The Someday."The Serenity Tool: Discuss the Serenity Prayer as a tactical intervention. Talk about the "Wisdom to know the difference" as a key to mental wellness.Personal Inventory: Ask the listener: "What are you worrying about? Why?" Encourage them to name the specific fear so it loses its power in the dark. The Relationship Cure: Explain that anxiety doesn't fade through "self-talk" alone, but through a growing relationship with Jesus Christ. As we get closer to Him, the shadows of the future look less intimidating.🌟 Celebrate Recovery at Peters Creek Baptist Church📍 6300 Library Road, South Park, PA Fridays at 6:30 PMAlso gathering on Mondays at 7 PM at Crossroads Ministries in Finleyville.➡️ Not local? The "If Only" Trap
Episode 22 Content: The "If Only" TrapThe Fantasyland of Rationalization: Discuss how the mind "reluctantly consents to reality." Discuss the mental health toll of living in a "what if" scenario. It’s a form of denial that feels like reflection but is actually stagnation.Naming the Whispers: Specifically mention the common ones: "If only they hadn’t walked out," "If only I’d stopped drinking sooner," "If only I’d been a better parent." * The Daylight of Truth: Luke chapter 12:2-3. Explain that the "inner rooms" of our minds are often filled with these whispered regrets. Bringing them into the "daylight" of our support group is the only way to stop their power.Consent to Reality: Talk about the relief that comes when we stop fighting the past and start admitting our powerlessness in the present. We can’t change the "if only," but we can change the "what now."The Spiritual Exchange: Discuss how Jesus Christ meets us in the truth of today, not the "maybe" of yesterday. He is the God of the second chance, not the God of the "should have."🌟 Celebrate Recovery at Peters Creek Baptist Church📍 6300 Library Road, South Park, PA Fridays at 6:30 PMAlso gathering on Mondays at 7 PM at Crossroads Ministries in Finleyville.➡️ Not local? The Robber of Pride
The Formula of Pride: Use the lesson's formula: Ignorance + Power + Pride = A Deadly Mixture. Discussion of how this cocktail cuts us off from God and from the very people on our support team. The "False Pride" Trap: Discusses how pride isn't just "thinking you're great." In recovery, false pride is often the mask we wear to hide our powerlessness. It's the "I can handle this myself" lie.The True Self: Uses Proverbs 29:23 to explain that when we invite God’s presence in, there’s no room for pride because He shows us who we really are—loved, but in need of Him.Series Preview: Over the coming weeks, we will look at eight other things that rob us of our serenity, but today is all about the "lowly in spirit" gaining honor. The Solution: Admitting we aren't God isn't a demotion; it's a promotion to a life of grace through Jesus Christ.🌟 Celebrate Recovery at Peters Creek Baptist Church📍 6300 Library Road, South Park, PA Fridays at 6:30 PMAlso gathering on Mondays at 7 PM at Crossroads Ministries in Finleyville.➡️ Not local? Sweetness in the Dead Places
The Pull of the World: We discuss Samson’s desire for the woman in Timnah. This is not as a lecture on rules, but a conversation about the "desires of the heart" and how we often seek satisfaction in places God didn't intend for us.Strength in the Secret Places: We focus on the encounter with the lion. Samson’s strength came from the Spirit of the Lord coming powerfully upon him. We discuss how, in our own recovery and faith, our greatest battles are often fought when no one else is watching.Sweetness from the Strong: We discuss the honey in the carcass of the lion and use this as a beautiful picture of how God brings "something sweet out of something bitter" and relate this to Christ’s redemptive work—how He takes our deadest, most "lion-like" struggles and turns them into a testimony of His grace. The Warning of the Riddle: We talk about the messiness of Samson’s choices and the consequences of his anger and are honest about sin and brokenness, but always point to the fact that God’s sovereign plan is never thwarted by our mistakes.Local Invitation🌟 Celebrate Recovery at Peters Creek Baptist Church📍 6300 Library Road, South Park, PA Fridays at 6:30 PMAlso gathering on Mondays at 7 PM at Crossroads Ministries in Finleyville.➡️ Not local? The Dawn of Reality
This is the "Action" episode of Principle One. We are moving from the weight of the past to the work of the present.Episode 19 Content: Mental Health & The Breaking of DenialQuestion 1: How can you begin to address your denial? The "Micro-Honesty" approach. It starts with naming one small truth to one safe person. We talk about the mental health shift from Paranoia (protecting the lie) to Peace (owning the truth).Question 2: In what areas are you beginning to face reality? Encourage specific "Grounding." Is it the reality of a bank statement? The reality of a marriage that’s struggling? The reality of a habit that has taken over? The Breaking of Effects: Discussion of what happens when denial breaks. It’s not just "knowing" the truth; it’s feeling the weight of it so you can finally set it down. The Spiritual Anchor: Use John 8:32 (the truth will set you free) . Jesus Christ isn't interested in a "cleaned-up" version of us, but the real us.The Solution: We move from "Hiding" to "Being Found."🌟 Celebrate Recovery at Peters Creek Baptist Church📍 6300 Library Road, South Park, PA Fridays at 6:30 PMAlso gathering on Mondays at 7 PM at Crossroads Ministries in Finleyville.➡️ Not local? Handling the Hurt
Episode 18 Content: Mental Health & The Reflex of RecoveryThe Question: "How do you handle pain and disappointment?"The Reflexes: the ways we try to "handle" it. Do you Minimize? Do you Medicate? Do you Isolate? The Muting Effect: Trying to "shut down" the disappointment doesn't just block the bad stuff—it creates a "grey zone" where you can't feel the good stuff either. It stunts your emotional growth and your connection to God.The Present vs. The Prediction: The mental health trap of "Negative Anticipation"—handling future pain by expecting the worst. Talk about how this robs us of today’s peace. The Spiritual Alternative: 1 Peters 5:7 describes the process of "unloading" those cares onto Jesus Christ instead of trying to "process" them in our own limited strength. The Solution: Moving from "Management" to "Surrender."🌟 Celebrate Recovery at Peters Creek Baptist Church📍 6300 Library Road, South Park, PA Fridays at 6:30 PMAlso gathering on Mondays at 7 PM at Crossroads Ministries in Finleyville.➡️ Not local? The Child’s Armor
Content: Mental Health & Relational BarriersProtection vs. Attention: Some of us became "invisible" to stay safe (withdrawal/compliance), while others became "the performer" or "the rebel" to finally be seen. The "Safety Blanket" that Smothers: These skills were actually good strategies for a child in a difficult home, but they have become destructive patterns for an adult. The Question: "As a child, what coping skills did you use to protect yourself or get attention?"The Mental Health Link (The Pivot): Connecting childhood coping to Hyper-vigilance. If you learned that "perfection" equals "safety," you aren't just tired; you are constantly scanning for threats. You can't relax because you're waiting for the other shoe to drop.Emotional Isolation: We discuss how these skills create a "glass wall." You might be in a room full of people, but if you're still using your childhood "performer" or "invisible" mask, nobody actually knows the real you.The Relational Price: We talk about how these survival skills make intimacy impossible. You can't have a healthy adult relationship if you're still reacting like a scared ten-year-old.The Solution: We identify these old patterns so we can find Authenticity. We trust that Jesus Christ loves the person behind the defense mechanism.🌟 Celebrate Recovery at Peters Creek Baptist Church📍 6300 Library Road, South Park, PA Fridays at 6:30 PMAlso gathering on Mondays at 7 PM at Crossroads Ministries in Finleyville.➡️ Not local? ABOUT THIS SHOW
Celebrate Recovery (CR) is a Christ-centered program that helps people overcome hurts, hang-ups, and habits, which can include emotional, spiritual, or relational struggles.
