Cinepunx Episode 215: Current Cinema Catch Up
BACK TOGETHER AND IT FEELS SO GOOD! Hey friends, welcome to our new episode as we check in on the cinema of today! Basically, we are working to try and record more, and I would LOVE to blame Josh but in reality scheduling has been hard for both of us. Episode is still super good, so no worries, but yes, it is a bit of a catch up so we have something to put out. Still love you though Thanks so much for listening and hanging with us, do me a favor and tell a friend we exist. On this episode we talk about a lot of movies, and we do our usual Wack and on Track gimmick as well. After Josh told me about his experience taking Job to Femtanyl I decided to use one of their songs to open the episode. IT is a bit crazy honestly. Also there is a small sound issue for the first section of the episode. Honestly? My toilet upstairs was running and the mic picked it up a little bit. Sorry buds. Thanks for listening! Episode 214: CAT CHASER (89), NIGHT EYES (90) W/ EVAN VELLELA
CUE THE SEXY SAXAMAPHONE, CINEPUNX IS BACK WITH THEIR OLD FRIEND EVAN VELLELA TO TALK ABOUT SOME DANG EROTIC THRILLERS! It is good to be back. Apologies again for the delay but Josh is a wild man and I was supporting my pastor wife getting ready for the Easter festivities and just life, yah know? Anyway, love you all, and so excited to be back with you, joined by my Ghoul Summer co-host Evan Vellela to discuss two erotic thriller of his choosing: Cat Chaser and Night Eyes. We are so grateful Evan was able to join us and, spoiler, I really enjoyed one of these movies. Look, even if I didn’t love both of these films, it was cool to finally dip out toe into the erotic thriller world and we do discuss some other movies I am hoping to catch up with soon. We also do our usual gimmick of Wack and on Track, and I am not sure anything some up we need to link to but off mic Josh did mention he was playing this PLOW UNITED GIG IN SEPTEMBER, I dunno if it is sold out or not so go check and maybe get a ticket off the dark web. Hey, have you thought about supporting our patreon? I would love it if you did! Thanks for listening! Episode 213: RAD & GLEAMING THE CUBE w/ Reject
I know, I know, you are asking your podcast player of choice out loud, right now, “WHY IS CHRIS REJECT BACK?” Well, it is simply because we love him. Also, LVAC is having some cool sales right now, so get some stuff printed, will yah?? On this extreme sport filled episode, Reject joins us to discuss two tubular films, Rad and Gleaming the Cube. Look, as much as we like to bust on Chris, the reality is he is a great dude who does great work, and you should make him feel cool by checking out LVAC, or DRYROTT, or SQUARE OF OPPOSITION, or whatever. It was actually pretty fun to talk to Chris again; even if he is a giant asshat, he is also pretty great. Kinda. On this episode, we do our usual Wack and On Track and we spend a bit more time discussing the ways DHS is being used to terrorize innocent people. I want to link to a charity, or a community organization, or an ICE WATCH group, but you should probably find a local one to you. I know things are hard right now; do not give up, we can do this together. Like I said, patronize any one of Chris’s scams — I mean, businesses — and let him know we sent yah so he stops harassing us all the time. Thanks friends, love you. Thanks for listening! Episode 212: MIKEY AND NICKY (76)
HOW CAN IT BE? ANTHER DOWN ON THE STREETS EPISODE OF THE INFAMOUS CINEPUNX PODCAST? On this episode we get into a conversation discussing Mikey and Nicky, the 1976 Elaine May written and directed film that sits at the junctions of crime films, buddy films, and crushing tragedies. Josh Cassavetes and Peter Falk really make this film incredible and we spend a chunk of time parsing out what makes this classic Philly film so great. We also spend some time lamenting the fascist take over of the country, discussing some recent cinema, and Josh reminds me of the band I was in during college. It is a cavalcade of unjustified nostalgia and questionable critical insight. Our opener song is of course CROSSED KEYS and the break song is from the band Josh discusses during the episode. NOT GORGEOUS. Ok I think that is it- Thanks for listening! Please spend some time checking out our Patreon and of course, check out the family of shows available at Cinepunx.com. Episode 211: MIDNIGHT RUN & RUNNING ON EMPTY w/ Black Guy Fawkes
CINEPUNX RETURNS FOR THE HOLIDAY SEASON!! On this incredible new episode, we discussed two films recommended by Paul Thomas Anderson, Midnight Run and Running on Empty. Joining us on this cinematic adventure is Blavk Guy Fawkes aka Ian Robinson, and we were delighted to talk to him I won’t waste your time with more apologies about our huge break. If you listen to the episode, you’ll hear why it’s been such a long gap between episodes and there’s some good reasons there but also we’ve just been enjoying life. On top of that it’s the holidays so I have things to do for family and quite honestly my laptop is broken again so until I get that fixed, I won’t be typing anything. Episode 210: 3 WOMEN w/ Annapurna Sriram, Director of FUCKTOYS
OMG OMG OMG I cannot BELIEVE the episode we have for you today. Hey friends, welcome back to another incredible episode of Cinepunx, the podcast that just won’t quit! On this episode we were blessed to welcome writer/director/actor Annapurna Sriram of Fucktoys If for some reason you missed our incredible episode with Justin Pearson discussing how much we loved this movie, you can find it here. I don’t wanna be presumptuous but I am relatively sure Annapurna is like really our friend now, which rules. I never doubted it honestly. On this episode we were so excited not only to discuss some of the making of Fucktoys but also the movie she chose for us to discuss, Robert Altman’s 3 Women. As well as diving deep on both movies, we do our usual Wack and On Track gimmick and discuss all manner of awesome and terrible things. You know, its a podcast, we say stuff and it is cool It was an insane gift to get to talk to Annapurna and I really hope we get to do it again cause she was so fun and interesting to discuss film and life with! You have to see her movie if it comes anywhere near you! Go to the one night screening or festival ASAP and you will not regret it! Our intro song is a weird Big Freedia track (fingers crossed spotify doesn’t nail us for it) and the break song is from Ink & Dagger because of course it is. I cannot remember honestly if there is anything special I needed to post in the notes so just hit me up if I forgot something. Love yall! Thanks for listening! Episode 209: BOUND(96), HONEY DON'T!(25) w/ Adrianna Gober
Hey friends, good to see you! On this episode of CINEPUNX we are joined by our friend and yours, Adrianna, to discuss two sapphic noir films: BOUND and HONEY DON’T! Because Josh so recently expressed his displeasure with one of these movies you might think this episode is some kind of set up, but trust me, that is not what this is. Adrianna is a thoughtful and insightful film expert and she has very interesting things to say about both films and the conversation is a lot of fun. The truth is we love Adrianna so we would have her on to discuss anything at all. I have to apologize though, we recorded this a bit ago but I had to edit this one myself and I just kept putting it off due to life stuff. Sorry friends Honestly, when the world is falling apart and everywhere you look it is easy to forget how good life can be because the evil folks are winning again and again; talking with friends about shit you love is just a gift. Thank you for the gift of your attention to it. I appreciate it greatly. We do all our usual gimmicks as far as wack and on track. I don’t THINK I need to provide any links but hit me up if you want some connects. Our opener song is MINDFORCE and the break song is RIGOROUS INSTITUTION from here in Portland. Ok thanks buds. Episode 208: NEW MOVIE ROUND UP 2025
WE ARE THE HERALDS OF GOOD AND BAD MOVIES, HERE TO ENOUNCE THE DOMINION OF CINEPUNX OVER THIS PODCAST GALAXY! Hey buds, we are back with a new low effort episode for you to enjoy! Look, Josh sees a ton of movies. He gets invited to press screenings constantly and it seemed about time for him to check in and give you the run down on those movies. Now, do I see as many as him? Well in preparation for this episode I went to see a few, but no, generally speaking I cannot even hope to keep to keep up with Josh. JUST FINANCIALLY SPEAKING I COULDN’T DO IT! I will give you all one update since we recorder, I went and saw Highest 2 Lowest and I did NOT love it as much as Josh does on this recording. I dug the lest half of the movie but the film starts off rough for sure. For our regular listeners who could literally not give a fuck about new movies I thank you in advance for your patience on this one. I still think it is a super fun convo though. This episode begins with a track off the new Public Opinion record and the break song is by Yield To None. Both bands are sick, check them out. We also still do wack and on track and discuss some really fun stuff that is you wanna know more about you gotta hit us up, that’s just the facts. Thanks for listening! Episode 207: FUCKTOYS W/ Justin Pearson
WE ARE BACK AND INCREDIBLY EXCITED TO DELIVER THIS EPISODE UNTO YOU! Hey friends, welcome to episode 207 of Cinepunx! Not only do we welcome guest and hopefully new friend Justin Pearson of Swing Kids, Some Girls, Crimson Curse, Three One G records, etc. to the show, but he has brought us the incredibly unique opportunity to discuss a movie so new it is not even really in wide release yet: FUCKTOYS! Additionally we discuss the EVERYTHING IS TERRIBLE classic Doggiewoggiez! Poochiewoochiez! which is incredibly and maybe even impossibly a remake of The Holy Mountain made entirely out of clips from dog related media. The intro and break music for this episode come from two of Justin’s recent projects, Deaf Club and All Leather, and we hope you dig them. Of course, on top of our discussion of these two films we also have all our usual shit talking and shenanigans we hope you enjoy. Huge thanks to the director of Fucktoys, Annapurna Sriram for allowing us to watch a screener of the film for discussion. Huge thanks as well to Justin Pearson for being such a fun, interesting, and gracious guest. It is great when you get the opportunity to interact with someone whose work you respect and discover they are also a great person! Thanks for listening! Cinepunx Episode 206: CITY ON FIRE / SCHOOL ON FIRE or our Ringo Lam Double
CINEPUNX IS BACK WITH ANOTHER EXCITING, RIVETING, EXPLOSIVE and of course SWEATY EPISODE! Here. on episode 206 we burst into your eardrums to take our first tentative steps into the films of Ringo Lam, classic Hong Kong director. We begin this journey with two films in a thematic trilogy but for some reason skipping the second film in that trilogy by discussing City on Fire and School on Fire. While I have some experience with these kinds of films I had never explored Lam’s specific filmography nor had Josh! It was fun discussing these films but we are far from experts. If you check out the two podcasts on our network with our friend Samm Deighan, TWITCH OF THE DEATH NERVE and EROS + MASSACRE you will find some discussion of Lam as well as references to other writers who have covered his work. This represents a beginning of our journey but one I hope we return to soon. Of course we discuss our usual WACK AND ON TRACK gimmick and other shenanigans. ALSO, are you into anime? I am just getting into it and I wanna discuss it with folks who know more than me, get at me. Thanks for listening! Hey friends, you know what it is, it is our NITRATE PICTURE SHOW recap episode. Sorry it is so late, there was a miscommunication between me and Sharkey and editing got delayed and the whole thing got held up. However, here we are! For this recap we are joined by Vinegar Syndrome Archivist Oscar Becher who you can see in the video below talking about dirty work As usual I don’t have a lot to say on this episode having not been but Josh and Oscar really get into it and share a lot of interesting stuff about the fest Of course all our usual shenanigans are present, and honestly Oscar is one of the more interesting and fun to talk to guests we have ever had. Cinepunx Episode 203: SINNERS (25) Or Talking About What Everyone is Talking About
HAPPY 11 YEARS TO US AND WELCOME TO OUR NEW EPISODE! I am posting this on May 5th, the day AFTER our 11th birthday but it still counts. In this episode we do something we honestly almost never do, we discuss a movie a lot of people are currently discussing, even on this very podcast network. Look, this discussing current films thing, let alone films that are relevant to culture thing, is not a new trend for us. However, yet another new film has come out that we are both really passionate about so we figured let’s jump on that opportunity. This episode was edited in time for this to come out BEFORE May 4th and the ERO GURO zine release at PhilaMOCA but I didn’t have time to post it. My bad. However, let’s get into this SINNERS discussion. Be forewarned, this is not a spoiler free discussion. We do avoid spoilers initially but it was too difficult to get at what we wanted without at least acknowledging the whole narrative. I think listening after seeing the movie is recommended. It is really great though so def go see it. Also, there are a bunch of things available over at ROUGH CUT FAN CLUB so go order stuff please. OK love you. Thanks for listening! CINEPUNX IS HERE TO ROCK IT! Oh, hey, it’s you and it’s us! Welcome to a new episode of CINEPUNX! Sometimes we get excited about a new movie and have to spend a whole episode gushing about it! Well we hope you like that cause not only did we do it this episode for FREAKY TALES, we did it for the next episode about SINNERS, so there is that. Hey, thanks for coming! We do our usual WACK AND ON TRACK gimmick and I am yet again on record gushing about anime like some sort of weirdo. Do I need to start a podcast about anime from an outsiders perspective? Cinepunx Episode 201: The Horrors of Malformed Mean + Blind Beast w/ SAMM DEIGHAN
WE ARE BACK AND HERE TO EXPLORE THE DEPRAVED BOUNDARIES OF HUMAN FLESH AND IMAGINATION, IT IS A BRAND NEW EPISODE OF CINEPUNX! It finally happened, after numerous requests for her to return, but we are blessed to be joined for the third time by our one and only SAMM DEIGHAN. Chances are you know Samm from her film writing and commentaries for folks like Criterion but I would hope you are as avid listener as I am to her incredible podcast on this very network, EROS + MASSACRE. Whenever Samm joins us she likes to push our boundaries and ask something of us as film viewers and this episode was no different as she lined up two classic Ero Guro films for us to check out, The Horrors of Malformed Men and Blind Beast, both from 1969. This was a really great conversation, and honestly it was a blessing just to catch up with a good friend. We loved talking about these movies and quite honestly without Samm leading us to them I am not sure when we would have given them a chance. Do me a favor and go pick up a copy of her new book, REVOLUTION IN 35MM and if you can check out some of her upcoming programming events, she picks incredible stuff and always has insights to share. This episode was chosen in conjunction with a collaboration between Samm and us over at ROUGH CUT FAN CLUB, so keep an eye out for that as well. Cinepunx Episode 199: FAVORITES OF 2024
WELCOME FRIENDS, COMRADES, FAMBLY, AND FRENEMIES TO ANOTHER GLORIOUS EPISODE OF CINEPUNX! Well, for better or worse here we are in 2025. I have so much to say about survival, resilience, preparing for the worst but also never giving up on hope, but this is not really the place for it. Just know we love you, and we want to be a source of joy for you. 2024 was not a great year for politics, society, the environment, but it WAS a great year for movies (and music btw). so Josh and I decided to spend an episode sharing our love for some great cinema in 2024! This list is not meant to be definitive or comprehensive, personally I missed a ton of films last year, but this is just a chance for us to celebrate some of the movies that moved us. I start the episode giving you all my caveats and apologies, but suffice to say I hope this is not only entertaining but helpful in finding some new movies to check out. Ok love you all. ALL THE THINGS THAT USED TO BE INSIDE OF US…NOW THEY ARE OUTSIDE, or rather, WELCOME to a brand new episode of the one and only CINEPUNX! In celebration of all things spooky and possibly ooky Josh and I take a short journey into Japanese horror with a discussion of Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s Cure. We obviously loved the movie, and spend some time talking about our experience with japane3se horror and the ways this film really bends perception through narrative film making. We hope you enjoy the discussion and if you have any comments or questions hit us up on socials or come chat in our discord. Email [email protected] for a link! We are so grateful to you for joining us on this cinematic journey! Speaking of things we are incredibly grateful for, those include you the listener and the opportunity to do this show for the last decade! To celebrate this incredible opportunity and the gift of all of you, we are hosting a celebratory screening in Philly at the ole PhilaMOCA, you can aquire tickets to said event here and we would love it if you would! We will not only be sharing this incredible Guy Maddin film, but also hanging out, munching on some snacks, and just being friends! Cinepunx Episode 196: OUR NICOLAS CAGE EPISODE W/ MATTY KING
There you are, and here we are, and what do you know it is a new episode of the ole CINEPUNX! So glad you could join us for another foray into the wild world of cinema. On this wonderful episode we welcome Josh’s long time friend and my new friend, Matty King, to discuss the storied and diverse career of one NICOLAS CAGE, an actor whose work elicits a variety of opinions and takes. You won’t be surprised to learn that we and Matty do not have the most common perspective on this often maligned as much as respected thespian. While I acknowledge that Cage has done his fair share of movies that are bad, he is also an incredible performer whose work often elevates an otherwise mediocre film to worth watching. Matty has been on a journey with his partner to watch all of Cage’s films, and is some 80 films deep at this point give or take, and has developed some strong theories around the shape and nature of the man’s career. Besides diving deep on the myth himself we also do our usual wack and on track gimmicks and if you need more info or links feel free to hit us up on socials. Matty was a real joy as a guest, thanks to him for sharing his sharp Cage insights and I hope we can have him again soon. Thanks for listening! Cinepunx Episode 195: MY WINNIPEG
HAIL AND WELL MET HEARTY PODCAST EXPLORER AND WELCOME TO THE MOST CURRENT EPISODE OF CINEPUNX! Hey so, unlike most episode of the last couple years, this was edited, mixed, and mastered by yours truly, Liam O’Donnell. I do not bring that up to boast, no indeed, rather it is a request for aid. If you hear something in this episode that is off, sounds bad, or should have been edited out, let me know. One exception to that request, at one point I harangue Josh about his mouth sounds, however, that is the only part of the episode where I EDITED OUT his mouth sounds so it seems like I have lost my mind entirely, and that made me laugh so I left it. On this episode we begin a journey of discovery for me into the works of Guy Maddin by discussing his 2007 film My Winnipeg. We had a good time with the film, but I promise for our next episode discussing his work I will do a bit more research, just had a rough week leading up to this recording,. This episode was slightly delayed because I had to get up the episode before this one which was VERY delayed. Apologies but I think this means we are ready to be caught up and good to go into the future. We do our usual gimmicks and I don’t THINK there is anything I need to link to but maybe I am just forgetting something. Big ups to the man Doug Tilley for picking our music for this episode cause Canada. Thanks so much for your time and your patience friends. Thanks for listening! Cinepunx Episode 194: CUCKOO and LUZ
LOOK OUT EVERYONE, IT IS A WILD EPISODE OF CINEPUNX! On this new and incredible episode of Cinepunx the fellas discuss recent horror film Cuckoo and by proxy the director’s other film Luz! Ok, you guys know I hate starting an episode notes with an apology, but here we are. We recorded this episode AWHILE ago, but our man Sharkey who usually edits these things had issues come up and so I had to edit this one on my own,. So the apology is two fold, one that it was delayed which was Sharkey had a bunch of life stuff come up and could not get to it, and second that it might not sound as good without his expertise so you know, sorry and whatever,. Actually triple sorry to our friends and family over at The Carnage Report cause they recently covered this as well, but I swear it was relevant when we did it so my bad y’all. God I hate that. Otherwise all the deals are the usual, we do our wacks and our on tracks and I am sure none of this is a big surprise but I love you all for listening anyway. Much love friends. Cinepunx Episode 193: X, PEARL, MAXXXINE-The Ti West Episode
Though this episode was recorded on my end in Chicago, I am writing this in Portland so welcome to the internets best bi-coastal film podcast hosted by two punks of color. Is that specific enough for you? SORRY FOR THE LONG DELAY ON THIS EPISODE! With moving and life stuff it took me a bit to get this to Sharkey, him a bit to edit, and then I didn’t realize he had shared it with me for a week. I swear, when we recorded this it was still kind of relevant and so much stuff has happened SINCE we recorded please forgive if we don’t mention something we should have On this new episode we are discussing the trilogy from Delaware’s (?) own Ti West, someone we have not met but we share a few mutuals with. He likely won’t listen to this but if he does, HEY MAN COME ON THE SHOW! Not much to say other than thanks for sticking around, we have a new episode ready to go asap, and we will be back on regular recording now that I have a home and internet. Cinepunx Episode 192: THE SEVENTH CURSE & THE CAT
CINEPUNC BACK AT IT AGAIN WITH THE MOVIE DORK REALNESS. Hey, yo, how fucking sick is The Seventh Curse? Like, crazy sick right? As you hopefully know this year is our tenth anniversary as a podcast and because of that we have been trying to plan fun shit to celebrate. In that spirit Josh and I recently programmed a 4 movie marathon on our Twitch channel and one of the films I chose was the actually incredible The Seventh Curse. It turns out that Josh had never seen it and that particular screening blew him away so we decided we should pair it with another insane film from the same director, The Cat, and just cut loose with the Honk Kong insanity. We do our usual WACK AND ON TRACK gimmick and Josh spend a long time recapping the incredible Nitrate Picture Show at the George Eastman theater, you should check it out. That is about it other then our deep love and appreciation toward your our incredible listeners. Thanks for listening! Cinepunx Episode 191: THE LAST OF SHEILA w/ Alonso Duralde
STEPHEN SONDHEIM! ANTHONY PERKINS! JAMES COBURN! LOTS OF WICKED SCHEMES AND PLANS ON A BOAT WITH RICH PEOPLE! Yes it is a brand new episode of Cinepunx where we welcome the incredible Alonso Duralde to discuss The Last of Sheila! You should know Alonso without introduction but just in case you should check out Linoleum Knife or Maximum Film or Breakfast All Day or his many appearances on Deck The Hallmark, BUT he joined us to promote his new books Hollywood Pride: A Celebration Of LGBTQ+ Representation and Perseverance in Film. Alonso chose for us to discuss the campy and wonderful The Last of Sheila, a film co written by Stephen Sondheim and Anthony Perkins that me and Josh had never seen before! Alonso was a perfect guest, charming and incredibly patient with our Bullshit and we cannot be thankful enough to him for joining us. I don’t know that Josh and I would have found this movie on our own and I was so excited to discuss it. I also grabbed a copy of Alonso’s awesome new book and I am beyond excited to read it. I found out the audio book, read by him, is also available on spotify so check that out as well. Ok thanks so much friends, check out all of Alonso’s stuff so he thinks coming on our show was a good idea, word? word up. Thanks for listening! Cinepunx Episode 190: THE FALL GUY (24)
I KNOW I KNOW DON’T YELL AT ME, WE GOT YOUR NEW EPISODE RIGHT HERE Look, this episode was delayed and I am sorry but here it is and, much to everyone’s chagrin and frustration we are just talking about The Fall Guy. Sometimes there is a rare convergence where Josh and I really enjoy a film that it feels like everyone else on earth hates. It isn’t all the time, but it does happen. Now that I have seen the extended cut of THIS HERE FILM? I think I love it, even though I do admit, it isn’t a perfect movie at all. Look I wanted to get this to you all way before now but life got in the way and here we are so, suffice it to say, here it is and I hope you love love love it. Cinepunx Episode 189: CIVIL WAR (24) w/ Willa-Rae Culpepper
From dehumanization to arms production, For the benefit of a nation or its destruction, Power is power; it’s the law of the land. Hey and welcome to a brand new episode of CINEPUNX!! On this spectacular episode we are joined by scholar and friend of the show Willa-Rae Culpepper to discuss new A24 film Civil War. Culpepper studies conflicts, and brings her incredible expertise as well as a good helping of nerdiness to our conversation. Josh and I both felt like Civil War really missed the mark in some ways, but brought up interesting discussion in others, and Willa was struck by the ways the film reflected the realities on the ground in Civil conflicts. There is also a good bit of discussion about film reception and interpretation as well. If you would like to read a much more extended version of her thoughts on the film you can find that here. I think our conversation covered a lot of area, apologies if I ran my mouth too much, just an interesting topic to me. We of course discuss our usual topics and update on things we love and hate. Cinepunx Episode 188: THE FOUR OF THE APOCALYPSE (Fulci Western Fun)
WHO IS THAT MYSTERIOUS FIGURE RIDING OVER THE RIDGE IN THE SCINTILLATING EVENING SUN? WHY, IT’S A BRAND NEW EPISODE OF CINEPUNX PARDNER! Hey friends, we have returned to bring you a riveting conversation about one of our favorite directors doing a genre he is not necessarily known for, that is The Four of the Apocalypse directed by Lucio Fulci! We probably spend too long talking, yet again, about not recording regularly but oh well. We’re trying to do it though, so it is what it is. Thanks for sticking with us! If you can see clear to recommending us to a friend we would greatly appreciate it. Find us on socials, huge thanks to a person on Bluesky who, I THINK but don’t know, is named Nadeem, has given a very kind recommendation as well as some other shows on the network. Very grateful for anyone who not only listens but takes the time to tell others about us. Cinepunx Episode 187: THE DUNE EPISODE W/ DAN SCULLY
Bless the Maker and His water. Bless the coming and going of Him. May His passing cleanse the world. May He keep the world for His people or, I mean, rather, WELCOME TO A BRAND NEW EPISODE OF CINEPUNX! This is episode 187 despite WHATEVER we may say during the episode itself, We know we are a little behind the zeitgeist on this one as most of the world has moved on to kaiju battles or whatever, BUT we had delays like making time to see the movie and finding a time our man DAN SCULLY could join us! Dan has been on the show prior but in case you do not know him, he is a comedian and podcaster and just a fun guy who Josh sees a LOT of movies with. Also, despite this episode being late in the national conversation around Dune, I have not been able to stop talking about it and rereading the books and finding interview with Frank Herbert and nerding out on them and just being a bit obsessed. Apologies I guess? I mean the only thing I feel bad about is that most people want to discuss the new film, Dune: Part Two where as I want to discuss DUNE as not even just the books but as a cultural project and it is probably a bit unhinged. We do our usual gimmicks, Dan is a super great guest, and I reach a level of being a dork that is frankly embarrassing. I am also not sure that all of my thoughts and theories about the book are accurate. I think I come across like I know what I am talking about, but actually my hyper fixation, which is often the case, is fueled by a deep feeling I DO NOT know what I am talking about. The finding a solid take on it all is what fuels the focus, but it might come across in the episode like I think I am an expert, which I do not. The music on this episode is inspired by the topic (Shai Hulud) and by a band that I know Dan likes that I do as well (Kid Dynamite). Dan rules, check out his podcasts I LIKE TO MOVIE MOVIE and HOT PROPERTY, and thanks dan for coming on the show! Thanks for listening! NEW EPISODE RIGHT HERE FOR YAH! Sorry for the delay friends but we are back to talk films satirizing the media and the African American experience in honor of AMERICAN FICTION. We take some time to explore HOLLYWOOD SHUFFLE and CB4, one of which we both grew up with in a sense, the other was entirely new to m e and a real pleasant surprise! Because of computer issues and schedule problems this episode has been recorded for quite awhile but I could not get it out till now. Apologies all and thanks for your patience! We hope it is as fun to listen to as it was for us to record! There is probably a lot more to say but I want to get this out ASAP so I will just say thanks for your support and your messages while Josh was in the hospital, and please get at us with ideas for episodes and for guest ideas. My laptop is sill not in working order so typing anything out is a bit of a nightmare, so I apologize. Suffice it to say we were inspire by Godzilla: Minus One to explore more Godzilla films because we both feel like amateurs in this world, so we picked two almost randomly to discuss, and had a GREAT TIME WITH IT! Listen to hear us discuss Godzilla vs Hedorah and Godzilla vs Destroyah, two films from different eras of the Godzilla franchise. There is probably more to say but little time to say it! Just know we love you and our next episode will likely be delayed while Josh deals with some health concerns, but we will try and get you something new as soon as possible. thanks friends! Cinepunx Episode 184: SEX, LIES, AND VIDEOTAPE & SALTBURN
Thank your stars and garters we are finally BACK! On this episode we are discussing a double feature of the classic Steven Soderbergh classic Sex, Lies, and Videotape and controversial new comer Saltburn. We discuss this in much more detail during the episode but it is worth noting that prior to choosing this double feature, Josh had not seen either film and thought, understandably, that they might have more in common. We do in fact find some through lines and generate some fruitful discussion despite the reality that these movies are in fact very different. Thanks so much for listening and telling a friend about us. If you enjoy the show consider joining us on our discord. This was a fun episode, and we hope you enjoy it. Thanks for listening! Cinepunx Episode 183: NEXT GOAL WINS-Two Movies with One Name (14, 23)
NEW EPISODE OF CINEPUNX COMING IN HOT AND FULL OF VINEGAR! Hey friends, and welcome to this kind of sports focused episode of CINEPUNX! On this athletics episode we will be discussing two films ostensibly telling the same story, and explore the ways they compliment or fail each other: NEXT GOAL WINS 2014 & 2023 ! The documentary from 2014 and the recent dramatization directed by Taika Waititi both strive to tell the story of the American Samoa FIFA team who had no scored a single goal in official game play for 18 years, and how their 2013 season changed all of that. It is a beautiful, diverse, and emotional story but do both formats serve that story well? You will have to listen to find out! We definitely had some mixed feelings on these two properties and we are, I think, very honest about what we loved and what we found frustrating about the ways this story gets told. We also do our usual wack and on track gimmicks, and this episode features an intro song from the new films soundtrack as well as a song from the new KATARSI Lp which we highly recommend picking up. As usual please le us know what you think of the episode and hit us up for an invite to join our Discord and extend the conversation even more! Thanks for listening! Cinepunx Episode 182: TIGER ON THE BEAT
OMG I AM SO GLAD TO SEE YOU! I give you this, a brand new episode of Cinepunx! Your favorite completely unreliable podcast! So sorry all recording has been so spotty, we spend a tiny bit of time covering it on the episode, but suffice to say life has been chaos as of late. I am hoping this episode represents us getting back into a rhythm but who knows. Either way we are excited you are here and very excited to get back into the swing of talking about movies. On this action packed episode we dive into a lesser known Chow Yun-Fat buddy cop film Tiger on the Beat! The film is not often discussed as a classic of Hong Kong action, despite being directed by the absolutely legendary Chia-Liang Liu Is there a reason for that or is it simply a coincidence of history? You will have to listen to find out! Spoiler: THIS MOVIE HAS A GORDON LIU CHAINSAW FIGHT! Fun episode, fun discussion, lots going on in the world right now and taking some time to chat with my buddy Josh was well worth it. We do our usual gimmicks and I don’t think we discuss anything that needs a link but if I am wrong please let me know. We also have a discord but links to the discord expire over time so posting it here won’t be worth it, so go ahead and email us or message us on any number of social media websites. Discord would be a great place to tell us about anything we got wrong on the episode, why we should love or hate this movie, or grill me about my personal feelings on current genocides and what not. As always, we do this cause folks love it, and that brings us great joy. Please share this show and all of our shows with your friends and family, thanks for being the best ever. Cinepunx Episode 180: Some Kind of Wonderful
IT IS TIME FOR OUR TRIUMPHANT RETURN TO THE WORLD OF MOVIE PODCASTING! CINEPUNX IS BACK WITH A BRAND NEW EPISODE DISCUSSING ONE OF LIAM’S TRUE NOSTALGIA FILMS, SOME KIND OF WONDERFUL!! WE know, it has been an interminably long time since we last recorded. I really thought that after I got back from my trip to Philadelphia we would have plenty of opportunities to record but between Josh’s insane schedule and my own surgery at the end of August, we really ran out of time to get a real episode done, so we sort of unintentionally took a month off. For that we apologize. I wanted, as our return episode, this one to be as relaxed as possible and I feel like we achieved that with this this film, even though Josh was not as in love with it as I am. Still, it was a fun and nostalgic discussion, as well as a chance to catch up on some other recent events. Cinepunx Episode 179: ANCHORMAN w/ Benny Horowitz (THE GASLIGHT ANTHEM, TOWN LIAR)
OUR PODCASTING STUDIO SMELLS OF RICH MAHOGANEY AND WE HAVE MANY LEATHER BOUND RECORDS! J/K We don’t have a studio, but also WELCOME TO A BRAND NEW EPISODE OF CINEPUNX! On this truly incredible episode we welcome Josh’s friend and now MY FRIEND TOO, Benny Horowitz who you may know from the band The Gaslight Anthem, Town Liars, either of his two awesome podcasts, and a plethora of other bands—but I was most familiar with his years of booking the legendary Manville Elk’s Lodge. He came to us with the idea of discussing the iconic Will Ferrell classic Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy and how could we not jump with joy? So, if you are at all like me, you might be surprised that Benny is a guest on this episode. Here is the thing friends, Josh Alvarez is just an amazing person and he just says to me hey, Benny wants to come on the show. Well, I had no idea who he meant, cause I don’t know anyone named Benny, but lo and behold he meant the drummer of The Gaslight Anthem who it turns out booked a ton of the shows that were so important to me at the Manville Elk’s Lodge? Like in one text thread Josh just exploded my brain. So then we get on the recording with Benny, who Josh said was awesome, and it turns out the dude is like one of the best guests I think we have ever had? Incredible! When Josh delivers, he really fucking delivers. Huge thanks to Benny for coming on the show and sharing his love for and insights into Anchorman. It was a real gift to have him on as a guest and he was very gracious with his time and with our shenanigans. We open with our usual gimmicks and conversation, and the usual WACK AND ON TRACK. I don’t think we discuss anything too important to link to other than of course his new band, TOWN LIAR, who is awesome and you should click through and check out ASAP. Benny also has two podcasts of his own you should subscribe to right away; GOING OFF TRACK and THE TUNE-UP Thanks again to Benny for being awesome and to all of you for checking out the show! Cinepunx Episode 178: 8 1/2 or Our Fellini Journey Continues
YOU KNOW WHAT IT IS, A NEW EPISODE OF CINEPUNX COMES RAGING AT YOU WITH SOME ITALIAN CINEMA MADNESS! Friends, thank you yet again for joining us on our meandering and pleasant stroll through cinema past and present, with detours on the way through music, pop culture, and life! Some time ago we took our first furtive steps down the winding path of the filmography of Federico Fellini! That episode with good friend of the show Heidi Saman is a great episode and can be found HERE but while we did cover 3 films, it was not the end of our journey, and it did not cover every aspect of Fellini as a figure and director. We really loved this movie, but we also struggle with it and I hope take seriously the questions of how confessional art can absolve creators, and in what ways a work can even obscure the intentions of the creator. We are no experts of course, so please be patient with us! As usual we also do our usual Wack and On Track gimmick, but I don’t think we discuss anything you need links for! It was great to catch up with Josh and we promise to have a new episode to you as soon as we can. If you have any concerns, questions, or comments email us or hit us up on socials! Cinepunx Episode 177: Without You I’m Nothing w/ Adrianna Gober
WELCOME WELCOME WELCOME TO A BRAND SPANKING NEW EPISODE OF CINEPUNX! ON this tour de force of comedy and campy we are joined by our own Adrianna Gober as she educates us on the film version of Sandra Berhard’s one woman show, Without You I’m Nothing We do not shy away from any of the controversy and problematic elements of the film while still giving ample time and respect to the career of Bernhard is both an icon and herself a figure of some controversy. We are not all on the same page about this film, or about Bernhard as a performer, but we definitely have an interesting meeting of the minds about it all. Of course we also do our WACK AND ON TRACK gimmick, I don’t think there is much we need to link to, lemme know if you need some links tho. hanks again to Adrianna for being the best guest and really helping us engage with this interesting film! Cinepunx Episode 176: Nitrate Picture Show w/ Kristen Squire, Rachel Bauer, and Emily Freitag
HELLO FRIENDS AND WELCOME TO A VERY SPECIAL EPISODE OF CINEPUNX! Any long time listeners know that for some years Josh has been atttending a festival at the Dryden Theatre in the George Eastman Museum in Rochester NY called The Nitrate Picture Show! For this episode Josh decided to invite three friends he met at the festival to come on the show so they could have a conversation about the history of the fest, this year’s line up, and just the experience of being a patron of the festival! We are so glad to have had Kristen, Rachel, and Emily on the show! I only met them virtually for this recording but they were fun and interesting conversation partners who jumped into the conversation and immediately had both insight and humor to share. I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as we did having it! For those of you who are not aware, we cover what Nitrate IS in depth on the episode but basically it is a kind of film that provides an incredible image but fell out of usage because it is so flammable. This festival began primarily as an event focused on the idea of preservation and showing films in service of the idea of exhibiting preserved items, but it has evolved to also take into account the content of these preserved artifacts while still taking seriously the work and even art of preservation. If you would like more info on the past programs of the fest you can click here! Thanks for listening, please consider checking out the NITRATE PICTURE SHOW and supporting the work of the George Eastman Museum, and of course a huge huge thanks you to Kristen Squire, Rachel Bauer, and Emily Freitag for joining us on the show and sharing their insights with all of us! Yes, we are not only getting current, but INCREDIBLY nerdy on this one! Now some of you may have read my Across… review here, but in case you haven’t a little spoiler, Josh and I both LOVED it. We had slightly more mixed feelings on GOTG3 but that is more about our love of the one then the other being not fun in it’s own right! Cinepunx Episode 174: THE DAY AFTER (83) & THREADS (84), Talking Nukes w/ Evan Vellela
GATHER YOUR FAMILY AND FRIENDS AND HEAD TO THE CELLAR, A BRAND NEW EPISODE OF CINEPUNX IS IN THE SKIES!! The most harrowing film podcast of the 21st century is back, this time with a delightful and upbeat episode featuring everyone’s favorite punk, Evan Vellela! Evan, being the ray of sunshine he is, chose two truly heartwarming stories of Nuclear Annihilation: The Day After (83) & Threads (84) The fact that these are two of the most depressing films we have ever seen doesn’t stop us from having a great time talking about them! Evan chose a DESTRUCT song and a DECOMP song for the episode, and I think both bands rip and you should check them out if you haven’t! We discuss our usual WACK and ON TRACK gimmick, not much to link from that but if you have any questions do not hesitate to hit us up. WHOA, YOU MADE IT! SO GLAD YOU FOUND THIS, THE 173RD EPISODE OF THE GREATEST PODCAST NO ONE KNOWS, CINEPUNX! Seriously, thanks so much for listening in and being part of the crew. One of our Cinepunx family and patreon supporters Sofia suggested a movie that is in fact NOT the movie we are discussing on this episode but led us to this place, so thanks friend! So, finally, Josh and I delve into the cinematic world of WONG KAR-WEI! We cover it on the episode, but suffice to say we take suggestions from ALL listeners but Patreon supporters are basically GUARANTEED we will cover thei requests unless they make bad faith requests just to mess with us (REJECT!) Anyway, we hope you enjoy this discussion of both a movie and a film maker that we are both barely qualified to delve into but who I think we are falling in love with as we go. Of course we also discuss the usual WACK AND ON TRACK gimmick! I don’t THINK there was anything we needed to link to save two things that are CROSSED KEYS related. CROSSED KEYS APPEARANCE ON WXPN THE SING US HOME FESTIVAL If there is anything you think I forgot which is important let me know, and thanks to everyone who has supported CROSSED KEYS as the new record has come out! You already know this but just a reminder that we appreciate you so so much! Thanks for listening, spend some time checking out our Patreon, and of course check out the family of shows available at Cinepunx.com. Cinepunx Episode 172: NOWHERE (97) w/ Mike Paulshock (Webbed Wing, sun god)
NEW CINEPUNX COMING IN HOT! Hey friends, welcome to episode 172 where we are talking about Nowhere and the film work in genrel of Gregg Araki with musician and one of the nicest fellas in all of Philadelphia, Mike Paulshock! You might know Mike from such bands as Webbed Wing and sun god, or you may be a fan of his podcast Whine & Cheese which is currently on hiatus! You probably don’t know that Mike is a pretty intense fan of Gregg Araki and if not you will be delightfully surprised to hear how excited he is to discuss Nowhere with us! Hey friends, have you ever heard of Paxlovid Rebound? Only about 10% of people who take Paxlovid experience it and guess what? Your boy is one of the lucky few! So, struggling with Covid as I am, I do NOT have the bandwidth to add all the notes about Wack and on Track that I should. We talk about a lot of fun stuff and if you need links to anything specific message us on socials and I will get to it once my dumb symptoms subside. Ok thanks for listening, and huge thanks to our man Mike Paulshock for making time to talk to us. Cinepunx Episode 169: THE KING OF COMEDY (82)
WHAT IS THIS, A BRAND SPANKING NEW EPISODE OF THE GREATEST FILM PODCAST ON THE PLANET HOSTED BY TWO AGING BROWN PUNKS? yeah it’s us, and we are back! If you listen to this show with any regularity you will be justifiably amazed that we have a new episode for you so quickly! You will also notice that we are discussing one film rather than two, and these two things are related! We are trying to record more regularly but offer slightly shorter episodes. Will it work? Who knows, but we are going to try anyway and see what happens. On this episode we decided to return to New Hollywood and discuss a Scorsese film that maybe does not get as much attention as some of his others, The King of Comedy. Recently this incredibly awkward film did enter the public consciousness with some of the direct references to it in Todd Phillip’s Joker (19), but it doesn’t seem like this discussion lead a lot of new people to check out the film. This is true every episode but just to be clear, we are no experts here on Cinepunx. We are exploring films and only occasionally covering things we feel like we have any insight on. More often the show is about us learning new things, and thus if you are a die hard Scorsese fan and you want to let us know something we got definitely wrong, no problem. We would always love to learn more. We do our usual WACK AND ON TRACK gimmick and there is not a ton there we need to link to but here are a few things worth checking out HOME FRONT (Faded State from the new record plays during the break) WEBBED WING NUOVO TESTAMENTO ZULU MENTALITE 81 FAKE NAMES CROSSED KEYS PRE-ORDER EPISODE OF FIRST SEVEN INCH CLUB I was on As usual we are beyond grateful to everyone who listens and supports the show and the network, please check out some of the other amazing shows that are a part of the family, tall a friend, and spend some time hitting us up with your ideas and questions! Cinepunx Episode 168: CYBORG (89) and THE PUNISHER (89) w/ Chris Reject
LETS GET INTO SOME MINDLESS 80’S ACTION! On this explosive new episode we welcome the king of the Lehigh Valley, Chris Reject, to talk about two 80s action films that someone would call “classic” and “exciting” and others might call “trash” What do we think? Well I guess you are about to find out! Spoiler, I spend a lot less time harassing and being mean to Chris Reject than you might reasonably think I would! It has been awhile since I talked this extensively to Chris Reject so that might be why I only spent a little bit of time harping on him for liking JCVD so much, but I am sure part of it is knowing how many folks associated with the network also dig on JCVD, a flaw I can only forgive them for because I love them so much. Another aspect though is that the film started it’s life as an Albert Pyun film, and after almost finishing this book about him, I have a lot of affection for him and his work, even the ones that kind of fail. Of course we do our usual WACK AND ON TRACK gimmick and definitely discus some stuff you should google later but instead of all that I am gonna hype up some of Chris’s stuff Of course you all know LVAC Have you checked out the various band shirts available from MERCH BIN Our Chris’s own Bootleg endeavor DRY ROT? I also assume you know he does Wrestling promotions but have you purchased the dvds of the events? He is also doing a screening of GLOW soon if you are in the valley! Ok this much time being kind to Reject is giving me fucking hives. We love you, we kind of love Chris, and we are thankful to everyone who makes the show possible Thanks for listening, spend some time checking out our Patreon, and of course check out the family of shows available at Cinepunx.com. Cinepunx Episode 167: ROGUE ONE & PROSPECT w/ Kaity and Lindsey of NERDS AND BEYOND
TO NERDERY, AND BEYOND! Welcome on and all to the latest episode of the scrappiest podcast around, CINEPUNX! On this Sci-Fi related episode we talk to Kaity and LIndsey of NERDS AND BEYOND! Kaity and LIndsey are nerdy experts on a lot of things, but one of their true passions is STAR WARS and so they have programmed for us a double header of an amazing film in that universe, and an underseen and very under appreciated independent Sci-Fi film featuring Pedro Pascal as well as some other faces who would join the Star Wars universe. There is a ton of stuff covered in this episode ranging from recent films like Next Exit and television like The Last of Us but also revelations like Josh apparently hates period pieces but really dug M3gan It was a ton of fun to talk to these two folks whose work covers such a wide swath of geek culture, and I was truly impressed by their passion and knowledge. They know their stuff! Watching Rogue One after finishing Andor was really interesting, and I was so glad to get a chance to watch and discuss Prospect, a movie I have been interested in since seeing the trailer in 2018. Of course you should check out the site they write for, NERD AND BEYOND, but also toss them a like on Twitter assuming it still exists when you are reading this: Kaity and Lindsey Huge thank you to both of them for joining us, thanks to Josh and Sharkey for putting up with my crazy butt, and thanks to all of you for listening and spreading the word. Please please please rate and review, subscribe, and tell a friend about us, and we will talk at you next time Thanks for listening, spend some time checking out our Patreon, and of course check out the family of shows available at Cinepunx.com. Cinepunx Episode 166: A Very Special Episode w/ Josh Ruben
Every time I write an intro for this podcast there is a voice in my head that just wants me to write the Boys II Men intro from Motown Philly, which I definitely have done before so it would not even be an original idea. WELCOME TO A BRAND NEW EPISODE OF CINEPUNX! This is a very special episode featuring something we don’t usually do on this show, AN INTERVIEW! Josh Ruben joins Lou Diamond Phillips as one of the few folks we have had on for an interview, though when you listen you will discover it was much more like a conversation than a traditional interview. Patreon supporters have heard this audio already as it was released early there, but this also has an introductory section with me and Josh Alvarez. Josh A was not able to join Josh R and I for the conversation so we wanted to record our usual gimmicks to kick it off, so you get your usual fix of our witty and yet mundane banter! For those few of you unfamiliar with Josh’s work you can find his full bio here on his site, but long story short he is an actor and director who most recently was in both A Wounded Fawn and Blood Relatives! He also is known for directing Scare Me, Werewolves Within, and Death to 2021! If you are obsessed with Dropout like Josh A and I are, you may know him from either Game Changer or Make Some Noise, both of which he is unbelievably hilarious on! Folks who know the show well as well as me well know I am not a huge fan of doing interviews, they can feel so formal and in-personal, so I was so delighted that Josh R was such a fun and interesting person to talk to, and I hope our conversation is half as fun to listen to as it was to record! Huge thanks to Josh Ruben for joining me for this talk, and of course I invited him to come back and join us for a regular episode! Thank to all of you for listening, please tell a friend about the show, spread the word, and continue to be awesome. We couldn’t and wouldn’t do this without your awesome support! Ok please share this with all your friends and enemies, we love you so much. Thanks for listening, spend some time checking out our Patreon, and of course check out the family of shows available at Cinepunx.com.
