With sweeping policy changes, government purges, and attacks on civil rights, it's critical to stay informed and take action. Carole lays out five key strategies to help you stay engaged and empowered in the fight for democracy, justice, and equity.Five Ways to Cope in Trump’s World🔹 1. We've Been Here Before...Understanding History History reminds us that America has faced dark times before. From Woodrow Wilson’s racist policies to the rise of the Ku Klux Klan in the 1920s, marginalized communities have always resisted oppression. Carole reflects on how Black leaders and organizations, like Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and the NAACP, have fought for justice—even when government institutions stood against them.🔹 2. The Power of Movements and Lifting Up Our Legacies Elections come and go, but movements create lasting change. Steeped in history going back to the early 1900s, nine Black fraternities and sororities have paved the way to economic progress, educational aptitude, and social relevance throughout Black communities across the United States. They are a part of the National Pan-Hellenic Council, founded in 1930, and it remains a vibrant organization in our nation to this day. I am a proud member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, one of the "Divine Nine." EPISODE #026 Big Shoes To Fill: The Legacies Of Dr. Dorothy Height and Sarah Ann Shaw
As we end our salute to Women's History Month, there are big shoes to fill when the conversation turns to two great Americans. One was a national icon who sat at the table with the great civil rights leaders, including Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The other was a local/regional hero, the first African-American hired as a news reporter for WBZ TV here in Boston. Regardless of their popularity on the national stage, their effectiveness is far-reaching and has had social and economic implications for many years.Dr. Dorothy Height was a trailblazing pioneer whose determination to champion the cause of Black and Brown communities was light years ahead of those who wanted gradual progress. Dr. Height was born in 1912 in Richmond, Virginia, and lived a robust 98 years until her passing in 2010. I knew her as the National President of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., and as my sorority sister. I had the pleasure of meeting her on several occasions and always admired her outrageously beautiful hats.Sarah-Ann Shaw was a fiercely proud and feisty woman of action. Her role in Boston civil rights activities led her to become the first African-American reporter and journalist for WBZ TV, where she served for 31 years from 1969 to 2000. Everyone knew and loved Sarah Ann. You knew that when she reported on the news stories, it would be fair and accurate. She even deliberated on joining the television station because she never wanted to compromise her integrity. That's what we all loved about her.Sarah Ann passed away on March 21, 2024 at the age of 90. Her daughter Klare and their family will hold a memorial service for Sarah-Ann on April 27, 2024, at my church, Bethel AME, in Boston. In preparing for this broadcast I talked to Klare and she reminded me that her mother admired the work I was doing in diversity, equity, and inclusion. I was deeply humbled just to hear those comments. Her legacy was so widespread that a friend and colleague of mine in the United Kingdom read about her in her local newspaper and wanted to know more. The late and great Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm said, "Service is the rent we pay for the privilege of living on this earth." We can all now say that the rent has been paid in full for Dr. Dorothy Height and Sarah-Ann Shaw. May they both rest in power as they continue to inspire us with their earthly actions and deeds.===============SARAH-ANN SHAWBay State Banner:https://baystatebanner.com/2024/03/27/sarah-ann-shaw-the-passing-of-a-boston-news-pioneer/Davis Funeral Homehttps://www.davisofboston.com/obituary/Sarah-Ann-ShawBoston Globehttps://www.bostonglobe.com/2024/03/21/metro/sarah-ann-shaw-obituary-wbz-journalist/?p1=Article_Inline_Related_LinkHistory Makershttps://www.thehistorymakers.org/biography/sarah-ann-shaw-41==========================DR. EPISODE #025 The Truth About Critical Race Theory: What It Is. What It Isn’t. How It’s Been Hijacked.
Critical Race Theory CRT has become a political football tossed around the United States so much that the original concept is unrecognizable to those who originated it in the 1970s. It is a legal framework that examines the complexities of racial discrimination, and it is connected to power, gender, and other societal categories. Contrary to popular opinion, CRT has never been taught in elementary schools, let alone other secondary classrooms. This podcast is designed to separate fact from fiction so that you will be a more informed listener as you share this podcast with others. Episode 021 High Stakes Backlash: CRT, BHM, & DEI Under Attack
The catalyst for today's attacks on diversity, equity, and inclusion began with Donald Trump's Executive Order 13950, signed on September 22, 2020. That ruling prevented diversity training programs from being taught to federal agencies and also banned diversity training for federal contractors. What was ignored by many has now exploded into state legislation around the country that impacts what teachers can and cannot say about diversity, race, racism, sexual orientation, gender identity, Critical Race Theory, and Black History. Florida leads the way with anti-diversity sentiment as Governor Ron DeSantis weaponized these terminologies to fuel his failed presidential campaign.Today's podcast closely examines what has happened over the past four years that has turned my work as a DEI professional into prohibited anti-American sessions of hate. Instead of being silent, my mission is to help educate my podcast audience on the dangers of misinformation in a diverse society. Pay close attention to the policies that are being enacted in States across the country. Determine what course of action you should take to affirm the value of DEI and Black History Month.===========Resources:Critical Race Theorywww.understandcrt.comTrump's Executive Order 13950https://trumpwhitehouse.archives.gov/presidential-actions/executive-order-combating-race-sex-stereotypingWhat Teachers Can and Cannot Teachhttps://www.axios.com/2024/02/01/teachers-black-history-month-crt-backlashBill Ackman and Elon Muskhttps://www.wsj.com/business/dei-diversity-initiatives-advocacy-elon-musk-bill-ackman-b64caeeaGovernor Sarah Huckabee Sanders Anti CRT Executive Orderhttps://governor.arkansas.gov/executive_orders/executive-order-to-prohibit-indoctrination-and-critical-race-theory-in-schoolsEdward Blumhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edward_Blum_(litigant)S. EPISODE 019: Carole’s Journey Crossing The Panama Canal
It started as a dream by French diplomat and businessman Ferdinand de Lesseps in 1880 and finally ended with an American effort that completed the Canal in 1914. More than 25,000 lives were lost building the Panama Canal, many of them Caribbean laborers and others from around the world who died from malaria, yellow fever, snakebites, and other health and occupational accidents incurred in this wild adventure. Prior to the completion of the first Canal, ships and ocean liners would have to go around Cape Horn in South America to get from the Pacific to the Atlantic Ocean(or vice versa). Building the Panama Canal significantly cut the time and cost of delivering products, freight, and people around the world.I had the good fortune of crossing from the Caribbean Sea/Atlantic Ocean side of the Panama Canal to the Pacific Ocean on January 10, 2024, during my South American cruise. It was a thrilling adventure and one I plan on repeating sometime in the future. This crossing only awakened my curiosity to learn more about the region, the history, the culture, the explorations, and the opportunities for the people of Central and South America. That's the value of travel. You want to learn more, do more, and give more as you share your experiences with others.Enjoy this podcast and share it with your friends, family, and colleagues who either know about this historic engineering feat or have only read about it in history books!===============PANAMA CANAL DOUMENTARY FEATURING DAVID McCOLLOUGHhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fzJRUAeF5o0

EPISOLE018: Exploring South America and Cartagena, Colombia with Dani Garcia
Cartagena, Colombia, was the first stop on my South American cruise on the Norwegian Sun. I was delighted that Dani Garcia, my fantastic Tour Guide, allowed me to interview her for my podcast. She'll take us through the city's historical adventures that date back to 1533. From San Pedro Claver, the famous priest who dedicated his life to helping and saving the enslaved people of the region, to Getsemani, the hip and trendy neighborhood of Cartagena, to the Palenque women in their bold and colorful outfits who represent the first free town for Africans in America… Cartagena is an amazing historic representation of the past fused with the present. The fifth largest city in Columbia and the second largest in the region after Barranquilla, Cartagena was founded on June 1, 1533, and named after the city of the same name in Spain. In 1984, its colonial walled city and fortress were designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Mixed architecture includes colonial, republican, and Italian styles intertwined into a rich history that dates back centuries.I purchased my tour on www.getyourguide.com.Dani works for Nexperience Tours that can be found on the Get Your Guide website.Learn more about Norwegian Cruise Line and their upcoming South American tours or journeys around the world at www.ncl.com

He is an attorney in Detroit and caught Covid for the second time from another attorney. He also passed Covid to my sister-in-law, who recovered and flew to Miami to visit their daughter and her family for Thanksgiving. My brother realized that he was not feeling as well as he had expected and went to the doctor, who immediately put him in an ambulance en route to the hospital. My brother ended up having three blood clots that would have killed him had he gotten on the same plane with my sister-in-law! He is doing much better now but will probably be on blood thinners for the rest of his life!So life is a gift. Do all that you can to take care of yourself so that you can live life to the fullest!

EPISODE 015: Soha Speaks! Alexandria, Egypt Tour Guide In Action
During my recent Middle East-Mediterranean cruise, I had a remarkable tour guide named SOHA, who demonstrated her passion and expertise and escorted us through the Alexandria Museum and the Library of Alexandria in Egypt. Her undergraduate and tour guide training prepared her to lead tours in this ancient cross cultural city.It was an exhilarating four-hour tour that captured the cultural integration of the Egyptian, Greek, and, ultimately, Roman influence. The museum contains over 1800 pharaonic, Greco-Roman, and Coptic artifacts located in a restored 20th-century palace. The Library of Alexandria originally dates back to the 3rd century BC under the rule of Ptolemy I Soter and was partially destroyed in 48 BC due to fire ignited by Julius Caesar’s troops. Part library, museum, gallery, and planetarium, it reflects on the impact of Alexander The Great, who founded the city in 332 BCE.We’ll let Soha l
