What problem in the world does your KINDNESS to others solve? We live in an unkind world where people are often belittled, made to feel unworthy, less than, beneath consideration, and even deserving of scorn. Your KINDNESS to others gives people their dignity back. It’s a special gift a lot of people don’t see often, yet it communicates very powerfully to others, “You matter.” Boaz was a man who did more than show kindness to others through his acts of service. He WAS a kind person!  The first mention of Boaz in the Bible, and more specifically, the very first words the Bible records him saying, gives us a glimpse of the kind of person he was through the way he greeted others.  † Just then Boaz came from Bethlehem. He said to the reapers, “The Lord be with you.” They answered, “The Lord bless you.” —‭‭Ruth‬ ‭2‬:‭4‬ ‭NRSV‬‬ How many people do you know greet others with this kind of blessing? His kind greeting wasn’t an act. It wasn’t fake. It was genuine! It’s not the kind of exchange one would normally expect to see between an employer and his workers. Rather, this was a grace-filled, blessed greeting. It was the Day of Pentecost… Fifty days earlier, God raised Jesus from the dead. But on the Day of Pentecost, it was announced that Jesus had now been exalted to the place of highest honor in heaven, at God’s right hand. And God the Father, just as He promised, gave Jesus the Son, the Holy Spirit to pour out upon all that the people in attendance saw and heard that day (Acts 2:32-33). Jewish people from all over the known world were there. Completely shocked, they heard Jesus’ disciples praising God and declaring His mighty acts in the languages of the countries where they had been residing. What was coming out of the mouths of Jesus’ disciples were things they should not have been able to speak. It was immediately after Jesus’ LAST WORDS to His disciples. After saying to His disciples that they would receive power when the Holy Spirit came upon them, and that they would be His witnesses in Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and to the ends of the earth (Acts 1:8), Jesus was taken up in a cloud. They watched the whole thing. In fact, they strained to see Him rising into heaven until they could see Him no more. It had been some 40 days since Jesus rose from the dead. Over those 40 days Jesus had been presenting Himself to His followers with many convincing proofs that He was alive! He was also speaking about the Kingdom. He told them not to depart from Jerusalem because something would be coming. When we can learn to embrace the righteousness of God that comes to us through Jesus Christ alone, there is always a way forward. And not only that, the glory of the LORD will protect you from behind! There is no amount of good works, philanthropy, charity or service to others that can serve as a substitute for the precious gift of forgiveness and salvation accomplished through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. † “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.“ Romans‬ ‭3‬:‭23‬ ‭NIV‬‬ It’s not that we shouldn’t do good works, we should. The point here is that we shouldn’t do good works to obtain forgiveness and salvation, but rather we should do good works because in Christ, we are forgiven and have received salvation! The Apostle Paul was once the epitome of what one could become and attain through one’s own works. Passionate about his own religious system of good works, he did everything he could to fulfill every Jewish law there was better than most. Attending to the needs of the Lord, what He deems important for our lives, and what He wants to accomplish through our service to others, still matters in the world we live in.There was so much I wanted to do and get done, but learning to live life with only one kidney was going to be an adjustment. After donating a kidney to my brother, I struggled in the recovery process because my energy levels were not the same as they once were. At times, I became frustrated with myself because I would get tired in the middle of the day. As much as I wanted to keep going, my body would say, “Nope. It’s time for a nap.” I found myself battling discouragement because I couldn’t live up to the expectations I was placing on myself. The frustration and discouragement were only compounded, living in an already life-draining world, with competing agendas vying for whatever time and energy I did have. It was life in this context, that sparked a renewed interest in the Holy Spirit’s presence, strength and power for my daily life. Moreover, I decided that if I was going to spend my time and energy on anything, as limited as it was, I needed to focus it on what God deemed important for my life—how I could best serve Him and serve others. It could very well be the most important, high priority, HIGH PAY-OFF meeting of your day. It may cost you some precious time, energy and planning, but learning to be with Jesus is one of, if not, the first and foremost priority of a servant-leader’s preparation for a successful day of serving others well.  Jesus hasn’t stopped calling ordinary people, like you and me, to Himself. And at times, it may not be for any other reason than to just be with Him. On one day, it may be just to sit quietly in His presence. On another day, it may be to dive deeply into His Word. And yet on another day, it may be to learn how to be a better person and servant-leader to those He has called you to live, serve and work with. Each day may be different, but one thing remains the same:  When you answer the call to be with Jesus, you won’t leave the same way you came! What is the most important part of a servant-leader’s PREPARATION for serving others well? You don’t need another distraction, worry or frustration. What you need, is a target!There used to be a television show on the History Channel called Top Shot. It was an American reality show in which 16 contestants, split into two teams of eight, would compete against each other in various types of shooting challenges. The winner would receive a $100,000 grand prize along with the coveted title of “Top Shot.” The challenges would often require contestants to navigate through unknown scenarios, shooting various kinds of guns, at all kinds of targets. In every episode, leading to the final episode, contestants would be eliminated based on how close they came to hitting their targets. This is what brought life to the show, bringing viewers back, week after week. The point I want to highlight about Top Shot, is that, without a target, there’s no show! Without a target, there is nothing to shoot at; no new scenario, no competition for contestants to be eliminated, and no reason to keep viewers interested in watching the show. This is WHY learning to fix our eyes upon the Lord is such an important practice for avoiding an otherwise boring and uninteresting life. As the One who gives life to all things and breathes life into every part of our being, there’s no one better to fix our eyes upon, than Jesus! It’s been two years since my brother and I had our kidney transplant surgery. I remember that hard and difficult conversation I had with my brother, Kenny, when he told me his kidneys were failing. I knew he had some kidney problems, I just didn’t realize how bad, it had gotten. Kenny was telling me how he was at peace with God, and that he was ready to go when God felt it was time. It was in that moment, that I thought to myself, “Wait a second. I’m in pretty good health. Maybe he can have one of my kidneys.”My brother never asked me for a kidney. In fact, he told me I needed to really pray about it and talk to my wife, Jill, first. Once Jill and I both had a peace that this was something God wanted me to do, our journey together towards kidney health for my brother began. If I were so honored to speak at the Lord’s funeral, I wouldn’t be able to say enough about what He has done in my life, for my family, and how much He means to me! What about you? Everything she tried, ended in failure and disappointment. There was no money left. She spent it all trying to find a cure. We don’t know her name, but this woman had been suffering from hemorrhages for twelve years.She had no close friends, no one to share her burden with, nor could she foster any meaningful relationships in her condition. Under Old Testament Law, her malady labeled her “unclean.” Thus, she would have been a social outcast from her people. All she wanted was to be healed. I took this picture on the northern shore of the Sea of Galilee in Capernaum, the region where Jesus lived and did the majority of His ministry. It was such a personal and meaningful experience, I thought I would share it with you today along with this week’s devotional question: What does God NEED from you to ACCOMPLISH His work in and through your life today? He didn’t know what to think when Jesus showed up at work that day, but Jesus had a problem.  Crowds were pressing in all around Him. Desperate and hurting, the sick, the blind, the lame, the deaf and brokenhearted were all coming from miles away. They had heard the rumors of a teacher who was healing everyone who came to Him. Hopeful for a change in their lives, a miracle, they wanted to hear what Jesus had to say. Simon Peter didn’t work with crowds. He worked with fish. He and his brother, Andrew, were commercial fisherman who made their living on the water. When Jesus showed up on the shore of the Sea of Galilee where Simon Peter and his brother, and their partners were washing their nets, He found Himself needing a solution for the crowds that were pressing in all around Him. Who are the people whose lives you are intending to SERVE and IMPACT in the year ahead?Moses was a fugitive on the run when he left Egypt at age 40. Born to be a prince, he ended up murdering someone instead. His life should have been over. But God had a different outcome in mind!After he fled from Egypt, the next 40 years of Moses’ life would be spent in the wilderness where he would find a wife and have children. He became a shepherd taking care of his father-in-law’s flocks as well as his own.It was here in this dry, arid place where Moses would learn how to be resourceful in order to care for his family; providing things like food, clothing and shelter; water for both them and their flocks; as well as defending and protecting them from any and all threats. It was in the wilderness where Moses would learn what it meant to serve others and understand how his servant-leadership impacted the lives of those under his care.It would also seem like Moses was content to live out the rest of his life in exile, as a shepherd taking care of his family and flocks in the wilderness. He left his old life in Egypt as a fugitive along with his shattered hopes and dreams. That life was now over, or so he thought. But then God captured Moses’ attention through a burning bush. He called him by name. God did this to resurrect what would have been a shattered hope or broken dream in Moses’ mind. And this encounter with God would not only change the course of his life, but also position Moses to serve and impact millions of people he never would have thought or imagined!  What can we learn from Moses’ encounter with God, about the people whose lives God is uniquely calling each of us to SERVE and IMPACT? There was a lot Mary had to take in and process when the Angel Gabriel showed up with a Word from God. This encounter with a heavenly messenger was far from a normal experience for her. In the Bible, we don’t find Mary ever praying for or pursuing an angelic experience. On the contrary, the Bible tells us that quite unexpectedly . . .  † [The angel] came to her and said, “Greetings, favored one! The Lord is with you.” But she was much perplexed by his words and pondered what sort of greeting this might be. The angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God.” Luke‬ ‭1‬:‭28‬-‭30‬ ‭NRSV‬‬ The Angel Gabriel was sent to deliver a Word from God to Mary. But having never seen such an angelic sight in her life, the young teenager was in no condition to receive this Word from God. She was scared, confused and disturbed. Her mind was racing trying to figure out what this angel could possibly mean. What did the angel do? He calmed Mary’s fears by telling her the Lord was with her, and that she had found favor with God. This set the stage for what the Angel Gabriel was about to say next to Mary; the most important Word from God that would not only change Mary’s life forever, but also that of the entire world! What was this Word from God that the Angel Gabriel gave Mary to hold on to for the next year of her life, if not more? What is the level of joy in your life today?We still see bright lights in the sky, over our cities and even better in the outskirts of town. We saw them even in the skies of Cuba, overlooking the historic Hotel Nacional de Cuba, an iconic landmark that has welcomed many of the rich and famous since it first opened back in 1930. Christmas is not widely celebrated in Cuba. You won’t see very many Christmas trees, lights, decorations or presents being exchanged. For most families, money for that would be prioritized for other necessities. It’s what made the lights in the sky over Cuba that much more of a joy to gaze upon with great wonder about what God may be up to. But what we saw in the night sky when this picture was taken, was nothing compared to the star the Magi saw overlooking Bethlehem where the Baby Jesus was born. † When they had heard the king, they set out; and there, ahead of them, went the star that they had seen at its rising, until it stopped over the place where the child was. When they saw that the star had stopped, they were overwhelmed with joy. ‭‭‬‬Matthew‬ ‭2‬:‭9‬-‭10‬ ‭NRSV After a grueling 900-mile trek across the desert in search of this newborn King of the Jews, the Magi finally found Him. Joy overflowed and overwhelmed them. It brought them to their knees in worship, where they opened their treasure chests of gold, frankincense and myrrh. Why is the expressing of Thanksgiving good for the soul? Like most people, in this past year you’ve probably had a number of both good days and bad days. Is there something MORE to be found in your place of REFUGE?A refuge is a place where one feels safe, secure and sheltered from pursuit, danger or trouble. It can also be found outside while enjoying the peace and serenity of God’s creation or an inward place of solitude and silence. Wherever it may be, a healthy place of refuge should provide a space for self-care, rejuvenation and for re-centering our lives.Finding a place of refuge would have been a priority for Ruth and Naomi in their time of mourning. Both were hurting and grieving. Ruth lost her husband. Naomi not only lost her husband, but her two sons as well.The entire village of Bethlehem was in a stir when they arrived from Moab. Broken and bitter about the way things turned out in Moab, Naomi wanted to be called by a new name, “Mara,” which means, bitter. Ruth, on the other hand, mourned her loss in a different way. She decided she would explore and discover what this new place of refuge in the Promised Land of Israel had to offer. It was springtime and the barley harvest was at hand. So her first curious pursuit began with a simple request.† And Ruth the Moabite said to Naomi, “Let me go to the field and glean among the ears of grain, behind someone in whose sight I may find favor.” She said to her, “Go, my daughter.” Ruth‬ ‭2:2‬ ‭NRSV‬The Levitical law of the Israelites called for the reapers of a harvest field to never reap an entire field, but to leave the outer edges for the poor. † When you reap the harvest of your land, you shall not reap to the very edges of your field, or gather the gleanings of your harvest; you shall leave them for the poor and for the alien: I am the Lord your God. What is the difference between TRUSTING God and DEVOTING your life to Him?This is a picture I took from the top of an ancient stone fortress, standing tall on a rocky mesa called Masada in the southern Judean Desert. It’s an impressive sight carved out and built upon cliffs made up of chalk, dolomite and marl strata about 1,300 feet (400 meters) above the Dead Sea. With the mountains of Moab in the background, this desert climate and the surrounding area is virtually uninhabited and undeveloped.It’s highly likely this is the region Naomi and her daughter-in-law Ruth would have traveled through as they made their way back from Moab to Bethlehem, in the Promised Land of Israel, Naomi’s people. Naomi first arrived in Moab with her husband Elimelech, and their two sons, Mahlon and Kilion. It was in the days when there was a severe famine in the land of Israel in which they decided to relocate to Moab. However, after they arrived, the Bible tells us that…† Then Elimelech died, and Naomi was left with her two sons. The two sons married Moabite women. One married a woman named Orpah, and the other a woman named Ruth. But about ten years later, both Mahlon and Kilion died. This left Naomi alone, without her two sons or her husband. Ruth‬ ‭1‬:‭3‬-‭5‬ ‭NLT‬‬But then Naomi heard that the LORD had started blessing His people again with good crops, so she got ready to leave Moab and head back to Bethlehem with her two daughters-in-law, most likely through this desert region pictured above. However on the way, Naomi said to her two daughters-in-law to go back to their own mothers’ home. Orpah and Ruth didn’t want to. They cried and wept together. Naomi kissed them good-bye and Orpah left, but Ruth refused to leave Naomi’s side.† But Ruth replied, “Don’t ask me to leave you and turn back. Wherever you go, I will go; wherever you live, I will live. Your people will be my people, and your God will be my God. Wherever you die, I will die, and there I will be buried. May the Lord punish me severely if I allow anything but death to separate us!” When Naomi saw that Ruth was determined to go with her, she said nothing more. Ruth‬ ‭1‬:‭16‬-‭18‬ ‭NLT‬‬The situation was horrible for this family. All three of these women lost their husbands. Our needs and dreams frequently present challenges and obstacles that need to be overcome in order to move forward.   The problem is our strength and energy levels have limitations. Our mental and emotional resolve, our will power, can only last for so long and take us so far before we find ourselves running on empty.   When we reach that point when we have nothing left in the gas tank, it can make anyone feel weak and vulnerable. No one wants to be made to feel weak or vulnerable. Yet, when the unexpected happens, things we didn’t plan for, unwanted things beyond our control, it’s hard not to feel a little trepidation, worry and concern about what might happen next. The Apostle Paul was no stranger to finding himself in horrible circumstances, hanging on for dear life. In grave danger, there were times when he was often made to feel weak and vulnerable. He faced more than his fair share of adversity and severe hardships. His story includes bouts with physical pain and affliction, mental anguish, not to mention the emotional turmoil of not knowing what might happen next. The things Paul encountered during the course of his life and mission would have easily taken out most people with one shot. But not Paul.  He discovered something about God’s strength that he could draw from especially for those moments in his life when he felt most weak and vulnerable. It was a secret he lived by that enabled him to do things in life he never would have thought possible!  What did Paul discover about God’s strength? And what could this mean for us today? How do you overcome an overburdened life? There are some things in life you were never meant to carry alone!I was in Cuba when I took this picture of a man and his team of oxen. We were looking at a church building that had been severely damaged after a major hurricane had hit the country. When I saw this pair of oxen coming by, yoked together and pulling a cart, I was reminded that there are some things in life we were never meant to carry alone.Life can get real heavy, real quick, when you feel like you’re carrying the weight of the entire world on your shoulders. It can feel like you’re carrying a backpack overloaded with things you think you really need for your journey here on earth. It’s heavy, you know it. But you’re thinking, if I don’t carry this, who will?The truth of the matter, however, is that you were never designed to carry the weight of the entire world on your shoulders.  Jesus Himself said . . . † “My Father has entrusted everything to Me. Just showing up and being in the place where God says He is going to be is huge!  Moses had a BIG problem on his hands when the Israelites found themselves in the wilderness without water. Moses was the one God called to lead them out of Egypt through the Red Sea and into a wilderness where water was scarce. Without water, the people were wondering and complaining among themselves if they had made the right decision to leave Egypt. They began to question Moses’ leadership and even worse, the God whom Moses served. Moses didn’t know what to do. But then he sought the Lord. † The Lord said to Moses, “Walk out in front of the people. Take your staff, the one you used when you struck the water of the Nile, and call some of the elders of Israel to join you. I will stand before you on the rock at Mount Sinai. Strike the rock, and water will come gushing out. Then the people will be able to drink.” So Moses struck the rock as he was told, and water gushed out as the elders looked on. Exodus‬ ‭17:5-6‬ ‭NLT In His response, God did not tell Moses, “This is what I am going to do.” Rather, God told Moses where He was going to be.
