    UNITY FOR JUSTICE AND PEACE

Preacher - Rev. T. Devaputhiran 21-01-2024 Morning UNITY FOR JUSTICE AND PEACE  Introduction Significance of this day Unity is uniformity Vs. United for a cause           Importance of the three key words in the theme Video on the power of justice   Should Christians be involved in justice related matters? Yes, because God is concerned about justice. Supportive Bible verses: Gn. 4: 10 – the voice of your brother’s blood is crying to me from the ground. Gn. 18: 19 – I have chosen him, that he may command his children and his household after him to keep the way of the Lord by doing righteousness and justice. Ps. 89:14 – righteousness and justice are the foundation of your throne … Is. 1:17 – learn to do good; seek justice, correct oppression; bring justice to the fatherless, plead the widow’s cause. Amos 5:24 – let justice roll down like waters, and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream.  Also see 8:4-6 and 2:6, 7.   What is Justice? Definitions: Fairness in the way people are dealt with; treatment of people in equitable or fair way; genuine respect for people; impartial treatment. Plato defined it as ‘everyone having what belongs to them and doing what they are responsible for.’ ‘In other words, a just person is someone who contributes to society according to their unique abilities and receives what is proportionate to their contribution.’ Four types of Justice: 1.    Distributive justice: Fairness in what people receive; receiving what they deserve. It ranges from goods to attention.   2.    Procedural justice: It means fair, transparent, impartial procedure taken when serving justice. It includes hearing from the accused too.   3.    Restorative justice: It means giving back what one deserves or really owns, from a betrayer.   4.    Retributive justice: It means giving punishment to the offender that aims to dissuade the perpetration of injustice i.e. to prevent future wrong-doings. Sometimes it also aims to give satisfactory peace to the victim and the family.   Social justice: Helping people to have equal access to wealth, education etc. by giving certain privileges to the oppressed and the poor - e.g. Boys of different heights who want to look over a wall to watch a football match – some need wooden stools of different heights. cf. Dt. 15; Lv. 25.   Justice - Righteousness   What are the ways in which we can get involved in matters relating to justice? 1.    Do not involve in unjust acts. Seek justice. Phil. 4:8. 2.    Help people who suffer due to injustice. Dt. 15; Lv. 25 3.    Raise voice against injustice in appropriate forums. Amos 1 & 2. 4.    Get involved in projects of righteousness and set things right. Rm. 6: 13 – present your members to God as instruments for righteousness. 5.    Have courage to suffer while seeking justice. Mt. 5:17.   Video on Prison ministry by Cyril Prabhu.

    Rediscovering and Reliving the Faith

Reformation Sunday Rediscovering and Reliving the Faith Preacher - Rev. T. Devaputhiran, 29th October23 Morning Introduction: Reformation Day: 31st of October, 1517. Three key passages: John chap. 2, 2 Chronicles and the Book of Revelation Chap. 2 A story: “Tell me, why people call me a Christian?” What exactly was reformed in the 16 th century? What are the factors that contributed and effected the reformation movement? Definitions: ‘Make or become better by removing or putting right what is bad or wrong’. “A reformed person is the one who has given up bad ways and is now living a good life.” “Reformation can be defined as a radical change for the better in social, political and religious affairs.” Reformation in the Bible: Noah – Abraham – Moses – Prophets - Jesus Christ – St. Paul The Reformation movement began with Martin Luther (1483-1546)  The supremacy of the Pope was over thrown. God and his living word became the sole authority over all people.  The belief in purgatory was abandoned.  The cult of worshipping saints and Mary were discontinued because Christ is the sole mediator.  The famous slogans in those days were: 1) Faith alone 2) Scripture alone 3) Christ alone 4) Grace alone 5) To God alone be the glory.  Worship of idols and relics were abandoned.  Out of the 7 sacraments only 2 were accepted with the new interpretation of the sacraments.  The Roman Church’s claim to be the sole dispenser of grace was nullified.  The priesthood was stripped of its Quasi-magical pretensions. Priesthood of all believers was emphasized.  The Bible was translated into vernaculars and worship service was conducted not in Latin but in people’s language.  Last, but not the least, the Roman Catholic Fathers and Brothers married the nuns. What about the present day churches? Three areas of reformation: 1. Constant reminder of our apostolic calling – John 2 2. Critical evaluation of our Christian life – Matthew 23 & Luke 11 3. Continuous balancing of the heritage and new expressions of faith - 2 Chr. 34 & Rev. 2

DAVID THE KING ALSO REJOICED GREATLY. 4 KEY PHRASES 1. THEY HAD GIVEN WILLINGLY 2. WITH A WHOLE HEART 3. THEY HAD OFFERED FREELY 4. THEY HAD OFFERED … TO THE LORD I THEY HAD GIVEN WILLINGLY I.E. VOLUNTARILY, NOT GRUDGINGLY II COR. 9:7 – EACH ONE MUST DO AS HE HAS MADE UP HIS MIND NOT RELUCTANTLY OR UNDER COMPULSION FOR GOD LOVES A CHEERFUL GIVER. PSALM 116: 12, 13 - WHAT SHALL I RENDER TO THE LORD FOR ALL HIS BENEFITS TO ME? I WILL LIFT UP THE CUP OF SALVATION AND CALL ON THE NAME OF THE LORD, PROVERBS 3: 9, 10 - HONOUR THE LORD WITH YOUR WEALTH AND WITH THE FIRST FRUITS OF ALL YOUR PRODUCE; THEN YOUR BARNS WILL BE FILLED WITH PLENTY, AND YOUR VATS WILL BE BURSTING WITH WINE. II WITH A WHOLE HEART KJV: WITH PERFECT HEART THERE IS A LINK BETWEEN THE OFFERING AND THE LIFE OF GIVER HEBREWS 11: 4 - BY FAITH ABEL OFFERED TO GOD A MORE ACCEPTABLE SACRIFICE THAN CAIN, THROUGH WHICH HE WAS COMMENDED AS RIGHTEOUS, GOD COMMENDING HIM BY ACCEPTING HIS GIFTS. AND THROUGH HIS FAITH, THOUGH HE DIED, HE STILL SPEAKS. GENESIS 4: 3, 4 - IN THE COURSE OF TIME CAIN BROUGHT TO THE LORD AN OFFERING OF THE FRUIT OF THE GROUND, 4 AND ABEL ALSO BROUGHT OF THE FIRSTBORN OF HIS FLOCK AND OF THEIR FAT PORTIONS. AND THE LORD HAD REGARD FOR ABEL AND HIS OFFERING, 5BUT FOR CAIN AND HIS OFFERING HE HAD NO REGARD. v. 7 - THE LORD SAID TO CAIN, “WHY ARE YOU ANGRY, AND WHY HAS YOUR FACE FALLEN? 7 IF YOU DO WELL, WILL YOU NOT BE ACCEPTED? AND IF YOU DO NOT DO WELL, SIN IS CROUCHING AT THE DOOR. ITS DESIRE IS CONTRARY TO YOU, BUT YOU MUST RULE OVER IT. MATTEW 5:23, 24 - SO IF YOU ARE OFFERING YOUR GIFT AT THE ALTAR AND THERE REMEMBER THAT YOUR BROTHER HAS SOMETHING AGAINST YOU, LEAVE YOUR GIFT THERE BEFORE THE ALTAR AND GO. FIRST BE RECONCILED TO YOUR BROTHER, AND THEN COME AND OFFER YOUR GIFT. II COR. 8:5 - THEY GAVE THEMSELVES FIRST TO THE LORD III THEY HAD OFFERED FREELY READ 1 CHR. 29:1-5 2 COR. 8: 3, 4 - FOR THEY GAVE ACCORDING TO THEIR MEANS, AS I CAN TESTIFY, AND BEYOND THEIR MEANS, OF THEIR OWN ACCORD, BEGGING US EARNESTLY FOR THE FAVOUR OF TAKING PART IN THE RELIEF OF THE SAINTS LUKE. 21:4 – FOR, THEY ALL CONTRIBUTED OUT OF THEIR ABUNDANCE, BUT SHE OUT OF HER POVERTY PUT IN ALL SHE HAD TO LIVE ON. WHAT MADE THESE PEOPLE TO GIVE FREELY?

    DISCIPLESHIP AS WITNESS

Rev. Dr. Vinod S. Sailus DISCIPLESHIP AS WITNESS II Kings 2: 1-15 Titus 2:1-15 Psalm 119: 33-48 St. John 3:22-30 1. Discipleship is Taking Pride in the Lord - (Psalm 119: 35) Asking for understanding, negating selfishness, being gracious, confirming the promises, taking the disgrace away, being righteous, steadfast in love, hope, keeping the law, live in liberty, not putting anyone in shame… It is a Positive Pride (Psalm 119: 35) 2. Discipleship is Transforming the Pride into Fear of God - (Titus 2:11) Why: Because God is bringing salvation (Titus 2:11) How: 1. David was afraid of God (I Chronicles 13:12) How: 2. Living Example 3. Discipleship is Transforming Fear of God into Faith in Jesus (St. John 3:28) Confession of John the Baptist (St. John 3:28) ➢ It is a direct confession that John the Baptist also need to have faith in Jesus Christ Why: 1. Because we were originally ineligible (Romans 11:17-18) But if some of the branches were broken off, and you, a wild olive shoot, were grafted in their place to share the rich root of the olive tree, do not boast over the branches. If you do boast, remember that it is not you that support the root, but the root that supports you. How: 2. Living Example 4.1. Discipleship is Going beyond the Faith of your Parents/Leaders (II Kings 2: 9) Elijah said to Elisha, “Tell me what I may do for you, before I am taken from you.” Elisha said, “Please let me inherit a double share of your spirit.” (II Kings 2: 9) 4.2. Discipleship is Going beyond the Faith of your Parents/Leaders (II Kings 2: 9) Jesus Christ had the double faith than his mother Mary (John 2:1-12) Discipleship as Witness When you have the double share of Spirit than your parents, you will become a disciple and then whatever you do become Witness
