Episode 23 | How to confidently tell a stranger (or family member) about your story
Hello friend! Welcome to the Faith, Writing & Coffee Chats podcast! Today I am sharing about HOW TO TALK TO A COMPLETE STRANGER (OR A FAMILY MEMBER) ABOUT YOUR WRITING AND YOUR STORY. So like, a dreaded question, I think maybe not all but a lot of writers can feel once they’ve told someone they are a writer, is being asked the question “What is your story about?” You as the writer should know what your story is about, and you do. The problem is how to tell someone what your story is about. This can be a really hard thing to do and I am speaking from experience of talking to complete strangers and family members alike and being asked this question and having no idea what to say. So, I feel like there are a few specific reasons why as a writer you may feel like you don’t know how to answer this question, at least in my experience. So I want to share a few examples of why this can be a hard question and then some helpful tips to beat this and be able to share your story with confidence. You don’t want to miss this episode! Episode 14 | The Thief of Callings & Being Faithful (online era part II)
Hello friend! Welcome to the Faith, Writing & Coffee Chats podcast! Today is part two of the “online era” series I've started. Think of this series as big sister chats and advice on how to be online, manage social media, giving you permission to take breaks and have the time to walk in what God has called you to! Today we are talking all about the thief of callings, prioritizing what’s important in your life and being faithful. We will also be talking about how to have success as a Christian writer = having God at the center of what you do, following Him and what He says, and knowing that ultimately it’s God who gives success. You just have to be faithful in what God has called you to even if that means saying no to things. If you don’t say no, those things that aren’t important (like social media) will become a thief to your calling. We are going to be chatting about all of this and more! You don’t want to miss this episode! Episode 10 | How to write redemption arcs & conversion stories? Story Science of A Christmas Carol
Hello friend! Welcome to the Faith, Writing & Coffee Chats podcast! Do you want to create compelling believable redemption story arcs for your villainous, not quite good, morally gray characters? In today’s episode, we will find out exactly this by studying one of my favorite Christmas novels, A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens!!! I am so excited to be studying this story with you all today as a part of the new podcast series: Story Science—Learning Story from Stories! This is how I have learned writing—by studying stories. If I want to learn how to write a certain story, a story or character arc, world build, dialogue, whatever it is I learn by studying stories. This can be from books, movies, tv shows, even songs. If it is a story then we can learn from it. So today, we will be answering the question: how do you write redemption arcs/stories? AND how to write conversion stories? If you are a faith writer then your redemption story will most likely be a conversion story—a story of coming to faith, of becoming a Christian. Since these two concepts are so linked, I wanted to go into answering both these questions in this episode! In this podcast, you will learn: - Developing backstory to show that hidden spark of good in your negative character, giving them layers and humanity - Giving your character an “aha” and disaster moment combo to help intact their moment of change - Letting your characters have consequences for their choices based on their internal conflict - Backing your character’s change with ACTION - How to make sure your characters change has a CLEAR TRIGGER - My personal favorite way of writing redemption stories: through conversation stories (a character becoming a Christian) In this podcast we will study a real story examples by case studying Scrooge from A Christmas Carol You don’t want to miss this episode! In today’s episode, we are discussing the importance of creating ROLE MODELS especially for young children, middle grade, teen and YA readers. Are role models really that important?
