Freedom from Lust // Matthew 5:27-30

Continuing our Sermon on the Mount series, we take a look at what Jesus has to say about one of the most common struggles today: Lust.Discussion Questions:1. Why do you think Jesus takes lust so seriously?Follow-up: How have you seen the effects of lust or objectification in our culture, your school, or among your friends?2. Jesus calls us to take radical action against sin. What are some things in your life that might be stumbling blocks?Follow-up: What practical steps can you take this week to "omit" those stumbling blocks, even if it’s inconvenient?3. The "R" in CORE stands for "Replace." Why is it important to replace sinful desires with something better instead of just trying to stop sin?Follow-up: What are some ways you can fill your life with a greater love for Jesus so that sin loses its appeal?

  45. 4

People of the Word // Matthew 5:17-20

Continuing our Sermon on the Mount series, we take a look at how Jesus viewed scripture, and how that should shape how His followers do.Discussion Questions:1. What does it mean that Jesus "fulfilled" the Law, and why is that important for us today?Follow-up: If Jesus fulfilled the Law, why should we still care about reading and obeying the Bible?Follow-up: How does understanding that the whole Bible points to Jesus change the way we read it?2. How do people today pick and choose parts of the Bible to follow, and why is that dangerous?Follow-up: Have you ever been tempted to ignore certain parts of Scripture because they seem outdated or uncomfortable?Follow-up: What’s the difference between obeying God’s Word out of love versus out of fear or pressure?3. What is the difference between legalism and true obedience to God?Follow-up: Jesus called out the Pharisees for focusing on rules instead of the heart—how can we make sure we don’t fall into that trap?Follow-up: Are there areas in your life where you obey God just because you "have to" rather than because you truly want to? How can that change?

  46. 3

Salt and Light // Matthew 5:13-16

Continuing in our Sermon on the Mount series, we take a look at Jesus' teaching to His followers about being salt and light, and how it instructs us how to exist as Christians in the world around us.Discussion Questions:What Makes You Different? Jesus says that His followers are the salt of the earth, meaning they are essential and distinct. But He warns that if salt loses its saltiness, it’s useless. If someone looked at your life—how you talk, act, and treat others—would they say you are different because of Jesus? Why or why not? What are some areas where you might be tempted to blend in rather than stand out as a follower of Christ? Are You Hiding Your Light? Jesus calls us the light of the world, meant to shine so others can see and be drawn to Him. But sometimes, we hide our light—whether out of fear, peer pressure, or just comfort. Have you ever held back from talking about your faith, inviting someone to church, or living differently because you were afraid of what others might think? What’s one step you can take this week to let your light shine in a real way? What’s Your Motive? Jesus makes it clear that our good deeds should point people to God, not ourselves. When you do the right thing—whether at school, in sports, or in relationships—what’s your motivation? Are you trying to build your own reputation, or are you trying to make God known? How can you check your heart and make sure your motive is to point people to Him and not just to look religious?
