A Hotel Called Heartbreak
On August 25, 1955, the El Paso Times reported the death of painter Alvin Krolik under the headline "Story Of Person Who Walked Lonely Street". Krolik himself had penned the line in his unpublished autobiography prior to being shot and killed by local police during an attempted robbery in El Paso, Texas. And so a legend was born... Join us this week in the GXO Podcast as The Generation X Offender retraces the footsteps of budding middle-aged songwriter Mae Boren-Axton, Mom to Hoyt (an accomplished songwriter in his own write a decade later) as she monitors the mania being spread by a hip swiveling, skinny kid from Tupelo as he seduces legions of eager young fans from the stage while simultaneously enraging the boyfriends who accompany them All this and more in the latest installment of the GXO Podcast celebrating 70 years of Rock N Roll (1956-2026) *THE MUSIC 25 year old, Oklahoma born Hoyt Axton, son of Texas born composer Mae Boren-Axton, writes "The Pusher" in 1963. Four years later on May 14, 1967, ground zero for the Summer of Love, Canadian/American, Los Angeles based psychedelic rock band Steppenwolf record their first version of The Pusher live at the Matrix club in San Francisco. The band would go onto re-record the song for their self titled debut album, released January 29, 1968, which would reach number six on Billboard's Album Chart. The album's lead single, "Born To Be Wild" would peak at number two on Billboard's Hot 100 Songs Chart. Both "The Pusher" and "Born To Be Wild" would be included in the 1969 landmark counterculture film Easy Rider the following year. "No No Song" was recorded by Beatle Ringo Starr in late 1974 and released the following year. With a little help from his friends Harry Nilsson on backing vocals, Jesse Ed Davis on electric guitar, Rolling Stones alumni Bobby Keys on sax and Nicky Hopkins on piano, Klaus Voormann from The Beatles' Hamburg days on bass, No No Song went #1 on the US Cash Box Top 100 Chart, #1 in Canada and #3 on the US Billboard Hot 100 Chart. To date, No No Song is Ringo Starr's 7th and last Top 10 hit. "Milkcow Blues Boogie" was originally written and recorded by Kokomo Arnold in 1934 as Milk Cow Blues. The song made Arnold a star and was widely adapted by blues artists as well as Western Swing musicians. Elvis Presley released the song as the A side of his 3rd 45 single for Sun Records on January 8, 1955. After securing the rights to Presley's contract, RCA Records re-issued the song later the same year in December 1955, later including it on Elvis' 1959 album A Date With Elvis. "Heartbreak Hotel" was written by Mae Boren-Axton and Tommy Durden. The song was recorded at RCA Victor January 10, 1956 at 1525 McGavock Street in Nashville and released January 27, 1956. This is Elvis' debut release for RCA Records. Do you have a burning desire to send us an email? Please do! [email protected] Want on our mailing list? Only one weekly email update, we promise! Exposed! 1954-1955 Music Charts
Our tale begins in the mid to late 40s... The 1940s Post War America The Great Cities of the East are full of electricity and light And music... Swing beat is DEAD daddio Bebop and Blues rule! Jump Swing Shout Blues ...but this new thing, as yet, remains undefined Founded in 1894 (solely sheet music back then kids!) Billboard Magazine didn't know what to do with it or what to call it either... Although the area of Harlem, situated within the borough of New York City known as Manhattan, only takes up approximately 1.4 square miles (as reported by the New York City Department of City Planning in March of 2019) Billboard Magazine, began publishing a music chart directed towards the entire African American customer base of the United States in 1942. They called this chart The Harlem Hit Parade. Close to 50 years after the publication's inception, Billboard Magazine decided the African American music consuming demographic mattered, or rather, their money mattered (cue Randy Newman "It's Money That Matters"). Three short years later, Billboard changed the name of the chart to "The Most Played Juke Box Race Records" followed by "Best Selling Retail Race Records" in 1948. These unfortunate (and possibly even hateful) labels used to categorize a type of music are literally, the very definition of racist (look it up). While some historians suggest the term "race" was a self referential term used by African Americans in the early part of the 20th Century, the word came to be considered offensive in the post-war world. This prompted the editorial staff of Billboard Magazine to rename the chart "Rhythm & Blues Chart Listings" in June of 1949... ...which is where our story begins As this exciting new music slithered out of the primordial sludge of post War rhythm and blues, something MAGICAL happened... Previously imposed barriers between people gradually, over time, began to shift and erode. And then... The walls came tumblin' down! (no, we're not British) Back by popular demand, we've extended the Sex segment of our three episode dissemination of "the great civilizing force of the 20th Century, Rock N Roll" Why? Because we love you. We love to love you baby. FCK Valentines Day!
Yup. You read that right. FU*K Valentines Day! Right where the sun don't shine. Angry? Bitter? Spiteful? Nah!!!!!! We're just not buying into the corporate driven cash orgy of spending that tells us all our love isn't valid unless we SPEND! SPEND! SPEND! on February the 14th of every year. VALENTINES DAY! Yuck! The biggest crock since... As always, this one is inclusive and, for EVERYONE (that includes you, you happy loving relationship folks) but today's episode is especially directed towards... All who are hurting and alone today. Today's a tough one. Our darkest, negative voices really do rub our faces in it today, with our isolation and our deeply held ill notions of personal failure. At our worst? Unlovable. Unlikeable. Unable. Unworthy. Don't get us started... We love you. We love you. We love you. You ARE loved. And, in the wise words of Maude herself, uttered through the vessel of Dame Ruth Gordon (we're paraphrasing here): "That's wonderful (Harold!). Now that you know love, go out and love some more! Never let the world deprive you of your right to make an ass of yourself. Otherwise, ya got nothing to talk about in the locker room" - Harold & Maude *THE MUSIC One https://music.apple.com/ca/album/one-mono/1296522456?i=1296522894 from Harrry Nilsson's 3rd album Aerial Ballet. Crooning Reclaimed
Tanner Burns Is Bringing Crooning Back! But what, might you ask, is Crooning? Crooning is a smooth, intimate style of singing that originated in the 1920s. The crooning style was made possible by widespread access to electricity and improvements made to microphones that picked up quieter sounds and a wider range of frequencies than ever before. This dominant popular vocal style coincided with the advent of radio broadcasting and electrical recording. Before widespread use of microphones, singers had to project their voices to the very back of the theater, making for a loud vocal style. Microphones made quieter, more personal, intimate singing possible. Historians believe the suggestion of intimacy in song was wildly attractive to women at the time, especially within the youth subculture known as bobby soxers. The crooning style developed quickly among singers who performed with big bands, reaching its height by the 1940s through to the late 1960s. Al Bowlly and Bing Crosby are often credited with inventing the crooning style, but it was Rudy Vallée who brought about its widespread popularity. From 1929 through to 1939, his highly rated radio program beamed in the sophistication of an exquisite New York City night club, where Vallée stood like a statue, surrounded by handsome, clean-cut collegiate band musicians, sensually cradling a saxophone in his arms. Vallée's first film, The Vagabond Lover, was promoted with the tagline, “Men Hate Him! Women Love Him!" while his success brought press warnings of “this punk from Maine, Vallée, with the dripping voice, required mounted police to beat back crowds of screaming and swooning females". But that was then. This is now. And by now, we mean Tanner Burns now. Prince Edward Island’s darling of the opera set, Burns has turned his gaze towards Crooning and bringing it back! Find out how now! On the latest episode of The GXO, your insider connection into what’s happening, right now! THE MUSIC 20 years before the advent of Crooning, Italian opera singer Enrico Caruso, the very first media superstar of recorded music, became the first person to ever sell a million records with his 1902 recording of the aria "Vesti La Giubba" from the 1892 opera I Pagliacci by Ruggero Leoncavallo written just 10 years prior https://music.apple.com/ca/album/i-pagliacci-recitar-vesti-la-giubba/403362925?i=403362945 Released on G&T Records, this milestone recording solidified Caruso's status as a music industry pioneer "You're A Mean One, Mr. Grinch" was originally written and composed for the 1966 animated television special Dr. Seuss' How The Grinch Stole Christmas. With lyrics by Theodor "Dr. Seuss" Geisel and music composed by Albert Hague, the song was originally performed by Thurl Ravenscroft. Upon its original release, the soundtrack won the Grammy Award For Best Album For Children at the 10th Annual Grammy Awards held February 29, 1968, recognizing accomplishments of musicians for the year 1967. This version sung by Tanner Burns from his 2025 debut EP "A Warm Christmas With Tanner Burns" https://music.apple.com/ca/album/youre-a-mean-one-mr-grinch/1855451403?i=1855451408 "I Only Have Eyes For You" is a song composed by Harry Warren and lyricist Al Dubin. The song was written for the 1934 Warner Brothers musical film Dames and originally sung by Dick Powell. Several other successful recordings of the song were made in 1934. 25 years later, African American doo-wop group The Flamingos would score an international Top 10 hit with their adaptation of the song recorded at New York's famed Bell Sound Studios, at its height, the largest independent recording studio in the United States. in 2011 Rolling Stone magazine placed The Flamingo's version at number 158 on their list of the 500 Greatest Songs Of All Time. Al Jolson recorded his version in 1949 as part of his 1949 Decca Records album Jolson Sings Again https://music.apple.com/ca/album/i-only-have-eyes-for-you/1672654096?i=1672654107 "I Got Plenty o' Nuttin'" is a bass-baritone aria sung by the character Porgy from George Gershwin's 1935 opera Porgy and Bess. The song has been covered by many musicians since the opera's premiere September 30, 1935 at the Colonial Theatre in Boston. Originally sung by African American baritone opera singer and actor Todd Duncan, Bing Crosby would go onto record his version for Decca Records on March 29, 1936, just six months after the opera's world premiere https://music.apple.com/ca/album/i-got-plenty-o-nuttin/1466126322?i=1466126329 "All Or Nothing At All" is a song composed in 1939 by Arthur Altman with lyrics by Jack Lawrence. Originally recorded on August 31, 1939 by the Harry James Orchestra (featuring a vocal solo by 23 year old Frank Sinatra who bandleader James had hired just two month previous to a two year contract at $75 a week). The side, as with all of Sinatra's recordings with James, had weak sales initially and would not become a hit until reissued by Columbia Records four years later when released as product to fill the music void as a result of the 1942-1944 musicians strike. The record went Number One topping the Billboard charts, selling over a million copies compared to the 8,000 sold when originally released. Interestingly, Sinatra went to Number 8 with the song on Billboard's chart for African American music, then called the Harlem Hit Parade https://music.apple.com/ca/album/all-or-nothing-at-all-feat-frank-sinatra/158597471?i=158597564 "Come Fly With Me" was written specifically for Frank Sinatra in 1958 by composer Jimmy Van Heusen and lyricist Sammy Cahn and was the title track of his 1958 album of the same name. Famed arranger Billy May arranged and conducted this swinging pop song, his first of many collaborations with Sinatra over the years. Sinatra At The Sands is Sinatra's first ever live album to be commercially released. Accompanied by the legendary Count Basie And His Orchestra, the album was conducted and arranged by Quincy Jones, recorded live in the Copa Room of the Sands Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada in 1966 https://music.apple.com/ca/album/come-fly-with-me-live-at-the-sands-hotel-and-casino-1966/1440842924?i=1440842927 "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" is an uncredited anonymous traditional English Christmas carol. It is in the Roxburghe Collection (printed in 1847 by John Payne Collier) but can be dated as far back as the 1650s as part of an anonymous manuscript. English solicitor and antiquarian William Sandys is credited with popularizing the carol after including it in his 1833 publication Christmas Carols Ancient And Modern (London, Richard Beckley publisher). This recording taken from A Warm Christmas With Tanner Burns featuring saxophone by Tanner's 16 year old jazz protégé brother Chase Burns https://music.apple.com/ca/album/god-rest-ye-merry-gentlemen/1855451403?i=1855451406 "Silent Night" is a popular Christmas carol composed in 1818 by Franz Gruber to lyrics by Joseph Mohr who had written the piece in the aftermath of the Napoleonic Wars. On Christmas Eve, 1818, Mohr brought his words to Gruber and asked him to compose a melody and guitar accompaniment for that night's mass after river flooding had damaged the church organ. The church was eventually destroyed by repeated flooding and eventually replaced by the Silent Night Chapel in 1924. Stille Nacht was first performed on Christmas Eve, 1818, at Saint Nicholas Church, the parish church of Oberndorf bei Salzburg in the Austrian province of Salzburg. This recording taken from A Warm Christmas With Tanner Burns featuring saxophone by Tanner's 16 year old jazz protégé brother Chase Burns https://music.apple.com/ca/album/silent-night/1855451403?i=1855451407 "Because" (the Guy d'Hardelot & Edward Teschemacher song) is a song originally published in 1900 with music and lyrics by Guy d'Hardelot and English lyrics by dward Teschemacher. Turn of the century tenor opera sensation Enrico Caruso recorded the song in its original French on December 7, 1912. The record was issued by Victor in the USA and His Master's Voice in Europe in 1913. American tenor and actor, Mario Lanza (1921-1959) the first artist to sell two and a half million albums, sang the song when playing Enrico Caruso in the 1951 biopic The Great Caruso, when he was just 30 years old. Lanza would go on to record the song for RCA Victor. His version peaked in the Top 20 Singles at No. 16. On a personal note, this song was my parent's wedding song when they were married July 25, 1945, a full six years before Lanza released his version https://music.apple.com/ca/album/because/400109901?i=400109935 Do you have a burning desire to send The GXO an email? Dr. Martin Luther King: Leader & Legacy
Remembering DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. on his Official Celebration Day Monday, January 19, 2026 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "I don't know what will happen now. We've got some difficult days ahead but it really doesn't matter with me now Because I have been to the mountaintop. I don't mind. Like anybody, I would like to live a long life. Longevity has its place. But I'm not concerned about that now. I just want to do God's will And he has allowed me to go up to the mountaintop And I have looked over And I have seen The Promised Land. I may not get there with you But I want you to know tonight, That we, as a people, Will get to the Promised Land. So I'm happy tonight. I'm not worried about anything. I'm not fearing any man. Mine eyes have seen The Glory Of the coming of the Lord" - Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. April 3, 1968 at the Mason Temple Church of God in Christ Headquarters in Memphis, Tennessee, 24 hours before he was shot dead while standing outside on the second floor balcony of Room 306 of the Lorraine Motel in Memphis. He was just 39 years old. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. - 39 years old when he was shot dead April 4, 1968 Malcolm X - 39 years old when he was shot dead February 21, 1965 Sam Cooke - 33 years old when he was shot dead December 11, 1964 John F. Kennedy - 46 years old when he was shot dead November 22, 1963 Robert F. Cooke first performed " A Change Is Gonna Come" on The Tonight Show With Johnny Carson on February 7, 1964. Cooke initially objected to performing the song that evening on Carson when prompted to by his manager Allen Klein. Cooke noted that the album's release was still one month away and that he had no time to pull together an arrangement within such a short time frame. Klein arranged for RCA to pay for a full string section and Cooke performed the song that Friday on The Tonight Show. Sadly the network did not save the the tape of the performance. Cooke's appearance on Carson that night was overshadowed by The Beatles performance on The Ed Sullivan Show just two days later. The song was issued March 1, 1964 as a track on what would be Cooke's final studio album Ain't That Good News. It would not be issued as a single for another nine months, following Cooke's murder. Cooke elected never to perform the song ever again following its one and only performance on The Tonight Show, both because of the complexity of the arrangement and also because of the ominous nature of the song. On December 11, 1964, two weeks before the single was releases, Sam Cooke was fatally shot at the Hacienda Motel at 91st and South Figueroa streets, 9141 South Figueroa Street in South Central Los Angeles, California. *Little Flame by Carsie Blanton https://music.apple.com/ca/album/the-little-flame-single/1854904398 released December 5, 2025. John & Yoko Some Time In New York City
This past Fall, John Lennon & Yoko Ono's only son, Sean Ono Lennon, released the exhaustive Power To The People 12 disc expanded version of his parent's criminally ignored 1972 radical feminist, agitprop, street wise, cutting edge, urban soul, ghetto funk rock masterpiece Some Time In New York City, With the exception of ONE SONG The one song that has become the ELEPHNANT'S MEMORY BAND in the room. Join us as we explore Sean Ono Lennon's visionary Evolution Documentaries for 9 of the 10 songs from his parents often misunderstood first proper rock n roll album together. and... We let the pieces fall where they may in rescuing the often censored controversial track from obscurity by John & Yoko to complete the missing piece of the puzzle of Sean Ono Lennon's audio love letter to Mom & Dad. Which brings us to the somewhat gratuitous F-bombs dropped by John & Yoko while recording this Masterclass In Agitprop, necessitating the dreaded "E" for EXPLICIT rating. Listener Discretion Is Advised. And... Before you get offended, please remember, it's right there in the name of the podcast. WE LOVE YOU! "LOVE LOVE LOVE" - John Lennon "WAR IS OVER! Throughout his 1989 film classic When Harry Met Sally, distinguished American film director Rob Reiner weaved Harry Connick Jr's very fine version of the song It Had To Be You in and out of the film. But, at the pivotal moment of the film, building up to its climax, Reiner brings in the big guns to get the job done. Sinatra's version of this song is surprisingly rare and can only be found on one album. Sinatra realized late in his career that he had never actually recorded the song It Had To Be You and rectified that with the "Some Things I've Missed" disc from his 1979 triple studio album appropriately titled Trilogy: Past, Present, Future, his third final studio album before his last, L.A. Headline caught your attention? Not to worry, this is not click bait Listen as well reveal how John Lennon's crafty song nicking skills got him in trouble, once again! But this time 'round it's not the LSD toting Dr. Timothy Leary he's pissed off. Or Chuck Berry. But wait! The FUN doesn't stop there... Join us in this episode as we shed some light on circumstances surrounding America's racist conspiracy to wipe out Rock N Roll altogether in the 1950s. Elvis got taken out of the game, drafted into the Army. Chuck Berry got arrested. Eddie Cochrane dies in a suspicious car incident in England. Carl Perkins is put out of commission in another suspicious car incident on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean. Allan Freed, the man responsible for not only giving Rock N Roll its name but also spreading its gospel to the youth of America through the very first rock concerts ever and his nationally syndicated radio show, GETS BUSTED and dies penniless shortly thereafter. 17 year old Latino Tex/Mex heartthrob rock n roller Ritchie Valens. Dead. Airplane crash. 22 year old Buddy Holly, without whom, the world would never have had The Beatles. Dead. Airplane crash. 28 year old The Big Bopper, the veteran of the bunch, riding high in the charts, Top 10 in America with Chantilly Lace. Dead. Airplane crash. 22 year old Jerry Lee Lewis, scorned for singing the Devil's praise with Great Balls of Fire, CANCELLED in sex scandal. Sam Cooke. Singer, songwriter, record producer, arranger, music publisher, record label owner and soon to be casino owner. Shot dead under extremely suspicious circumstances involving two individuals with previous links to crime. Most suspicious of all? Flamboyant and openly gay, African American Little Richard, at the very height of his creative powers and earning potential, quits music altogether, turning his life over to God and the Ministry. Warren Zevon: Enjoy Every Sandwich
Warren Zevon began life the son of "Stumpy" Zevon, a Jewish immigrant born William Zivotofsky in the Ukraine before changing it to Zevon. To feed his family Zevon worked as a bookie handling volume bets and dice games for notorious Los Angeles mobster Mickey Cohen. Zevon ended up working for years in Cohen's gang and was best man at Cohen's wedding. Stumpy's son Warren, once student to the legendary, world renowned classical composer Igor Stravinsky, turned professional musician, singer, songwriter while still in high school, forming a duo whose first single, produced by Bones Howe, reached number 65 on Billboards Pop Chart in April 1966. No bad for a first timer! Soon afterwards, Zevon's parents divorced. He quit high school and, driving a sports car his gangster father won in a card game, moved from Los Angeles to New York to become a folk singer. And so begins the 55 year odyssey from the release of his ironically titled 1970 debut album Wanted Dead Or Alive to his posthumous induction into the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame on November 8, 2025. Join us, along with David Letterman and the man himself, as we retrace the steps of his journey from Stumpy Zevon's kid to Rock N Roll Hall of Fame Inductee. It will be quite apparent after perusing the song titles for today's show that Listener Discretion Is Advised as there is some objectional language used and subject matter not suitable for all audiences. At the tender young age of just 59 short, well lived years, master tunesmith, storyteller, folksinger, barefoot hippie Todd Daniel Snider passed away at his home in East Nashville, Tennessee, of an undiagnosed case of walking pneumonia aggravated by injuries sustained during an assault on his person in Utah. Happy Thanksgiving
To all of our listeners we would like to wish each and every one of you a healthy, happy, safe and joyful Thanksgiving, regardless of whether you celebrate the harvest feast of gratitude in October or November. We here at Rock N Roll Fashionistas have much to be grateful for... First and foremost we are GRATEFUL for YOU! Yes, YOU! Thank you for listening. Without you there would be no point in doing this at all. We would also like to thank Ray Davies, whose powerful music we have used in this show to help punctuate the season. As far as we can tell, Ray has not licensed either album we have taken our OPENING and CLOSING songs from for distribution. At present there is no way to stream or purchase either one of his albums Other People's Lives (2006) or Working Man's Café (2007). We tried unsuccessfully to identify an official website for Ray in order to contact his organization directly to inquire as to how it is possible to purchase either one of these albums at this time. OPENING TRACK: Morphine Song taken from Ray Davies' 2007 album Working Man's Cafe, originally released on Sir Richard Branson's record label V2 Records CLOSING TRACK: Thanksgiving Day taken from Ray Davies' 2006 album Other People's Lives originally released on Sir Richard Branson's record label V2 Records At present, the Ray Davies albums that are currently available to stream and/or purchase were both originally released by Legacy Records (a division of Sony Music). We're CELEBRATING our very first birthday “the ONLY Rock N Roll podcast you need!” Woodstock weekend 2025. Come along with us for the ride as we retrace our steps towards the hallowed grounds of Bethel, New York, one of Rock N Roll’s most sacred landscapes, the natural amphitheater at Max Yasgur’s dairy farm, the cow pasture that housed a temporary village of half a million kids in the middle of forests and farmland and rolling green hills. Revisit. Regroup. Repeat. Reuse. Expect to be turned on to the secret history of the Music Festival from Ancient Greece to Altamont and beyond. Q: “Where ya headed?” A: “Further” From Hendrix’s triumphant arrival in 1967 at the Monterey International Pop Festival during the Summer Of Love to his late great channeling of a new psychedelic American anthem for the age of Aquarius before the dream was over… A nation awakened from a dream with the arrest of Charles Manson and his deranged family of knife wielding, hippie kids, October,1969. Welcome back to Yoko Ono: 21st Century Icon Part Two - The Conclusion! As promised 7 days ago in the waning minutes of last week's podcast, we pick up where we left off in the Continuing Story of Yoko Ono: 21st Century Icon, artist, performer, thinker, changer of the world! Much of this episode covers Yoko Ono's 5 years in London between 1966 and 1971 including her invitation to appear at the Destruction In Art Symposium in London in September 1966 and her return engagement at the behest of Paul McCartney's beloved hippie bookstore turned art space Indica Gallery. Pepper and the aptly named Summer Of Love that followed its release in 1967. Follow John, Paul, George & Ringo in the early days of 1968 as they bunk down with the Maharishi in Rishikesh, India for two months of mantras, meditation and fun in the sun! Come join the Sunshine Superman himself, Donovan, along with four Beatles, two Beach Boys and a Mia Farrow... Yoko Ono: 21st Century Icon
Join us this week as we unravel the enigma that is Yoko Ono, mid 20th Century pioneer of the Avant Garde, darling of the early 60s New York underground, admired by the Guggenheims, Marcel Duchamp and associate to John Cage. In this, part one of two, we explore Yoko Ono's earliest beginnings from her birth in 1933 to her wealthy international banker father and the family's long ties to ancient Samurai Warrior-scholars. Having survived the fire bombing of Tokyo during World War Two, a direct attack on innocent civilians killing over 100,000 people and displacing another million rendering them instantly homeless, the Ono's scoured the countryside staving off starvation looking for food, begging, bartering and carrying all of their remaining earthly belongings in a wheelbarrow. All of this AND MORE! In the latest episode of Rock N Roll Fashionistas, contextualizing rock n roll since Woodstock 2024. OPENING TRACK: "Sisters, O Sisters", https://music.apple.com/ca/album/sisters-o-sisters/1440858026?i=1440858350 the Yoko Ono penned original from the 1972 John & Yoko album Some Time In New York City, their fourth collaborative studio album and second live album. David Bowie's Reclamation
In the summer of 1971, a long haired 24 year old hippie folk singer songwriter by the name David Bowie played the very first Glastonbury Music Festival at Worthy Farm in Pilton, Somerset, England. On the 30th anniversary of the storied annual summer music festival Bowie returned, and in doing so, reclaimed a legacy long tarnished by two decades of crass commercialism, hollow success and artistic bankruptcy. Join us as we revisit the final days of an aging, reclusive David Bowie, anxious to shift the narrative from his elderly appearance onto his 26th and final studio album, Blackstar, released on the occasion of his 69th birthday, just two days prior to his death. Explore the reclamation of David Bowie's artistic integrity through his triumphant performance at Glastonbury 2000 as well as the early history of his 70's Glam Rock co-conspirator Marc Bolan, the iconography of Rock N Roll and so much more! The following questions answered: What did Ringo Starr say when asked if he was a Mod or a Rocker? What happy accident resulted in the creation of one of the most pivotal Beatles' album covers? Who was on the very first cover of Rolling Stone magazine, first published in the shadow of the Summer of Love, November 9, 1967? At the very peak of their productivity, which act wrote and recorded four studio albums of original material, circumvented the globe performing two world tours and starred in two feature films all in the span of just 24 months? What is the sound of a Donovan photograph? How 60's British folk music duo Tyrannosaurus Rex transformed into 70s Glam superstars T.Rex and the longest album title in the history of rock n roll... Oasis or Blur? You tell us! All of this AND MORE in the latest episode of Rock N Roll Fashionistas, contextualizing rock n roll since Woodstock 2024. OPENING TRACK: On March 2, 1973 T.Rex released the Marc Bolan penned stand alone singe "20th Century Boy" which peaked at number 3 on the UK singles chart. 30 years later Brit Pop superstars Placebo released their cover of the song on their aptly title Covers album from 2003 https://music.apple.com/ca/album/20th-century-boy/961069038?i=961069094 CLOSING TRACK: Opening title track from Bowie's final album Blackstar, released January 8, 2016 on his final living birthday https://music.apple.com/ca/album/1676286487?i=1676286495 Producer's Note: This episode was originally recorded in chronological order immediately following the release of our "Rock N Roll Movies" episode which first aired Sunday, April 20, 2025. Ellen McIlwaine: School Bus Driver Jammed With Jimi Hendrix
Ellen McIlwaine, one of the greatest practitioners of slide guitar ever, soulful powerhouse vocalist extraordinaire, poet, composer, songstress, lyricist, recording artist, painter, visual artist, interpreter of song and more. She was all that and then some... Join us in our celebration of the life and artistry of this giant amongst musicians, this icon, this goddess... Ellen McIlwaine's life and times explored through the lens of the newly posted CBC Docs YouTube channel music documentary "Goddess Of Slide" from Soul Flicker Films, an Alfonso Maiorana production https://youtu.be/SCTety1hwdI?si=PC2ux8sTlD5_Occr As far back as 1973 the impact of Ellen McIlwaine's presence has been deeply felt and loomed large in the personal life of Rock N Roll Fashionista's host Sean Passmore (AKA "unimportant"). Join Passmore as he outs himself as the guy who made the phone call that changed McIlwaine's life. Passmore sets the record straight on one singular inaccurate fact in this otherwise thoroughly inspiring love letter to McIlwaine who passed away quite suddenly at the age of 75 in 2021, six weeks after receiving a diagnosis of terminal cancer. McIlwaine's music weaves poignantly through Passmore's life through personal recollections and anecdotes of Swami Bill, Brother Tommy and others in the colorful cast of characters from the Rock N Roll Fashionistas universe. Did a teenage Passmore put an impertinent and inappropriate move on the middle-aged McIlwaine while making an embarrassingly inebriated song request in a bar? And did McIlwaine play the song? Would this same song fatefully draw McIlwaine & Passmore together again over a decade later with surprising, life altering results? FIND OUT NOW and SO MUCH MORE on the latest episode of Rock N Roll Fashionistas THE SONGS: Opening Track: "Can't Find My Way Home" is a song written by Steve Winwood that was first released by Blind Faith on their self titled 1969 debut album. They were an English rock supergroup consisting of Winwood, Eric Clapton, Ginger Baker and Ric Grech. They followed the success of each of the member's former bands, including Clapton and Baker's former group Cream and Winwood's former group Traffic but split up after a few months, producing only one album and a three-month summer tour. McIlwaine's cover of the song appears of her debut solo album Honky Tonk Angel released by Polydor Records in 1972 https://music.apple.com/ca/album/cant-find-my-way-home/1444004698?i=1444005078 "Higher Ground" is a song written by Stevie Wonder that first appeared on his 1973 album Innervisions. The song reached number 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and number 1 on the US Hot R&B Singles chart. Wonder wrote and recorded the song in a three-hour burst of creativity in May 1973. McIlwaine's stunning reinterpretation of the song appears on her 1975 3rd album The Real Ellen McIlwaine released by Montreal, Canada label Kot'Ai Records https://music.apple.com/ca/album/higher-ground/932879780?i=932882018 "Down So Low" was written by American R&B and country music singer/songwriter Tracy Nelson. OPENING TRACK: Sure Don't Feel Like Love https://music.apple.com/ca/album/sure-dont-feel-like-love/380593433?i=380593552 by master American songwriter Paul Simon from his 2006 Brian Eno produced album Surprise. Completely unrelated to the theme of this BONUS episode. Due to time limitations we were unable to include this track on our previous episode Paul Simon: 8 Decades so have done so here. CLOSING TRACK: Well, Did You Evah! https://music.apple.com/ca/album/well-did-you-evah/1629181291?i=1629181417 is a song written by Cole Porter for his 1939 musical DuBarry Was A Lady, where it was introduced by Betty Grable and Charles Walters. It is written as a duet, with the pair exchanging bad news, shrugging off and one upping each others stories all in the name of an aloof good time. Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra sang the song in the movie High Society, January 17, 1956. The film is a musical remake of the 1940 screwball comedy film The Philadelphia Story staring Katharine Hepburn, Cary Grant and Jimmy Stewart, itself based on Phillip Barry's 1939 play of the same name. The Sinatra/Crosby duet is likely the most well known version of the song. It was added to the movie late in development, to give the two stars an opportunity to sing together. Punk Rock royalty Debbie Harry and proto punk granddaddy Iggy Pop recorded the song in 1990 for Red Hot + Blue, a compilation album released as part of an urgent call to raise funds and awareness for HIV/AIDS. Red Hot + Blue is the first compilation album from the Red Hot Organization in the Red Hot Benefit Series. It features contemporary pop performers reinterpreting the songs of legendary LGBT Great American Songbook composer Cole Porter. The title of the album originates from Cole Porter's 1936 Broadway musical Red, Hot and Blue staring Ethel Merman, Jimmy Durante and Bob Hope. Released in September 1990, the album sold over a million copies worldwide, raising nearly $1m for the activist group ACT UP (AIDS Coalition To Unleash Power). Heralded as one of the first major AIDS benefits in the music business, this initiative came a full two years before the creation of The Elton John Foundation, itself inspired by the tragic death from AIDS of teenager Ryan White who had, before his passing, forged a strong and meaningful friendship with pop singer Elton John. Released as a single in the UK on December 24, 1990 but not the US. The single reached No. 42 in the UK Singles Chart and No. 29 in the Irish chart.
