The Princess Bride
Inconceivable! This week, The Princess Bride. Rob Reiner’s classic film full of action, adventure, pirates, giants, sword fights and yes even a little kissing. A staple of my childhood that has grown more beloved over time: its sincere embrace of love and friendship, its playful deconstruction of heroic myths, and the way its humour never undercuts its heart is what cements this into a classic. It’s an episode about storytelling itself the kind passed down, rewatched, and recited by heart ending, of course, as all great love stories should...as you wish.References used in the creation of this episode The Princess Bride | Rotten Tomatoeshttps://letterboxd.com/film/the-princess-bride/The Princess Bride movie review (1987) | Roger EbertInside the hilarious making of ‘The Princess Bride’ | New York Post'The Princess Bride' at 30: Rob Reiner, Robin Wright on Cult Classic

Inglourious Basterds (Re-Release)
This week Inglourious Basterds, A year ago I released this episode. A historical fiction film that despite its reimagining elements convey the very dark truth of fascism, its victims, villains and the people who chose to stay silent for their own comfort. You'll hear me talking about what was the upcoming Canadian election, and the beginnings of Trump and his Goon Squad administration. The dog whistles were always there.Yesterday VA ICU RN Alex Pretti was executed on camera by federal agents. The administration is actively lying about the murder despite the fact the footage is available for us to see.“The Party told you to reject the evidence of your eyes and ears. One Battle After Another
It’s all ocean waves this week because Brian returns for One Battle After Another. We unpack the film’s urgent political and cultural themes, drawing clear parallels between its story and what’s happening in America right now. The cycles of division powdered by racism and control that lead to constant ideological warfare. Teyana Taylor’s magnetic performance is truly one of the best of the year, Sean Penn’s volatile intensity cements him as one of the great movie villains, and Chase Infinity’s first film role 🤯 INCREDIBLE. We also dive into Leonardo DiCaprio, and how his performance feels a little phoned in compared to the rest of the cast. The episode wraps with our thoughts on the Best Actor Oscar conversation, and who truly deserves the spotlight this year. Make sure to follow Brian instagram & Tik Tok. Heat
This week I get all the way up in Michael Mann’s 1995 crime epic Heat. I am joined by Drew, aka Mr. Movie Guy from TikTok. We break down the legendary performances from Al Pacino and Robert De Niro, and why their shared scenes have become some of the most iconic moments in film history. We also talk about Pacino’s bold, operatic choices and dare we say ❄️ inspired versus De Niro’s cool minimalism, and how that contrast elevates the film far beyond a standard. The conversation turns to Heat’s puzzling legacy with the Academy, discussing how such an ambitious, technically masterful, and emotionally complex film went largely undervalued during awards season, despite its influence and staying power.References used in the creation of this episode are listed below'Heat' at 25: The Making of a Modern Classichttps://www.imdb.com/title/tt0113277/?ref_=ttpl_ov_bkhttps://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/heat_1995https://letterboxd.com/film/heat-1995/https://www.rogerebert.com/reviews/heat-1995

Kicking off Season 2 with Wicked: For Good. Returning to oz with us is Blake, isn’t it WONDERFUL?! 💚🩷 A fellow theatre kid to help me unpack this one. We had sky-high expectations going into the film. We deep how the film stacks up against the beloved stage musical, what translated beautifully, what surprised us, and where we it fell short. We break down our favourite moments, and the changes we wish had been handled differently. Ultimately, the conversation turns to the film’s strong Glinda-fixation, how it reshapes the story’s balance, impacts Elphaba’s arc, and what that means for the heart of Wicked.

It's a Wonderful Life
This week, I revisit the magic and meaning of It’s a Wonderful Life with returning guest and classic film historian Harry Marks. Together, we dig into the film’s fascinating production history, its rocky journey to becoming a beloved holiday staple, and why its message feels just as relevant today as it did in the 1940s. We explore how the film’s small town setting and big hearted story quietly challenge the facade of the American Dream, revealing a deeply human, almost socialist heart beneath its surface. It is an unflinching look at how capitalism can push people to their breaking point. Jimmy Stewart gives an absolutely groundbreaking performance, shaped by his real-life experiences as a World War II veteran, his raw emotional truth helped redefine screen acting forever. Timeless, moving, and surprisingly modern, this episode looks at why It’s a Wonderful Life still matters. The holidays can be a very dark time for many. Pocahontas
TW: colonialism, violence against Indigenous Peoples, racism, historical rewriting, exploitation of marginalized communities and cultural erasure. Please listen with care. This week I dive into Disney’s 1995 animated film Pocahontas, a controversial entry in the Disney canon. The movie reimagines the real-life story of Matoaka, known as Pocahontas, an Indigenous Powhatan woman whose life and legacy were romanticized and distorted for mainstream audiences. This is a highly problematic film for SO many reasons, including by not limited to romanticizing the tragic story of the real life Pocahontas, the centering of the narrative of John Smith framing him as a hero and the downplaying the horrible impact of the english on Indigenous People. There is NO excuse. I wish Disney had done the research needed to make this film. Beyond casting Indigenous voice actors the care seems to have stopped there, This film could have much more to say if history was even remotely taken into account. The film centres a European perspective rather than the Indigenous one. The real story is far more complex, brutal, a story of survival under colonial pressure and not of romance. There is something to be said for the music conveying the overall message of shared humanity. As a kid the message I received from this film was the importance of environmental protection, finding the beauty in other cultures, and that the land I live on was/is stolen. Although this is positive it does not make up for the films glaring shortcomings. I’ll end this intro with a quote from Roger Ebert “Having led one of the most interesting lives imaginable, Pocahontas serves here as a simplified symbol.” This episode approaches Disney’s Pocahontas with care and honesty. I will talk about its artistry, its impact, and the painful truths behind its story. Please listen at your own comfort level, and take breaks if you need to.

Sinners
KT joins me to dance with the devil this week, together we deep dive Ryan Coogler’s cinematic masterpiece Sinners. This isn't your average vampire musical; it challenges viewers to confront uncomfortable truths about identity, racism, and cultural appropriation. The core take away from this film is that the true horror is the treatment of the black characters and the systemic oppression inflicted on them. We also explore how the movie weaves together the complexities of Irish culture with themes of whitewashing and cultural vampirism, pushing boundaries in its depiction of power, heritage, and authenticity. We discuss how Sinners reflects the tension between reclaiming cultural roots and the exploitation of marginalized narratives for mainstream consumption. With both of us having irish roots like the vampire Remmick. KT and I both acknowledge as two white women there are limitations in our perspective. We approached the creation of this episode with much research and care. We are both committed to the dismantling of systemic racism through learning, reflection and action. The Color Purple (1985)
Ending our Summer of Spielberg with a film that I feel he was the wrong director for.TW: This episode is a heavy one guys. The Color Purple is the 1985 film adaption of Alice Walkers novel of the same name. It deals with topics of child sexual abuse, incest, and spousal abuse. Steven Spielberg a controversial director of this film given the nature of the story being about predominantly African American characters. The film and the book have been criticized by the NAACP for the depiction of black men as abusers with little redeeming qualities. This must be acknowledged and respected. Although Spielberg has been defended and praised heavily by the cast for the last 40 years for his work, and the care he took in telling a story that for them felt sincere, he received criticism from audiences. He also shied away from the queer relationships in the book at his admission of being out of his depth, which is such a pivotal and important part of the novel. I think it’s important to discuss this film, as it has had a huge impact on cinema. I think it’s important to criticize directors for their missteps even when it seems to be done with good intentions. We also need to acknowledge white washing of narratives, and call out when white directors have been given opportunities that were not given to equally talented black directors.Institutional racism needs to be broken down from within, not just from the outside. Steven Spielberg was not the best choice for director for this film, and through this Summer of Spielberg series I feel it would do a disservice to only discuss his wins, I need to cover the controversies of his career as well. Which includes an opportunity that should have been given to someone else.I will try to handle this as sensitively as I can and I want to ensure I take as much care with this review as possible. This is not to take away from the actors in the film that are incredible, including but not limited to Whoopi Goldberg, Danny Glover and Oprah. Their performances are what make this film as good as it is. And they deserves their flowers for their accomplishments in truly making an emotionally moving motion picture.Along with the film itself references used in the creation of this episode are linked belowhttps://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/color_purplehttps://letterboxd.com/film/the-color-purple/https://www.rogerebert.com/reviews/the-color-purple-1985https://www.blackfilm.com/20030321/features/alicewalker.shtmlhttps://www.sfgate.com/books/article/alice-walker-on-the-making-of-the-film-the-color-3000001.phphttps://youtu.be/TN34IySTNlg?si=EwrImCgmfiSdW0DF

This 2022 masterpiece hit so close to home for me, and it has now made it to my Letterboxd Top 4. This film is a 40 million dollar therapy project as declared by Spielberg himself. It lets us as the audience look behind the magic to the real person underneath.Along with this film itself references used in the creation of this episode are listed below.https://www.rogerebert.com/reviews/the-fabelmans-movie-review-2022https://variety.com/2022/film/reviews/the-fabelmans-review-steven-spielberg-1235368194/https://www.cbsnews.com/news/steven-spielberg-on-making-the-fabelmans/https://newsletter.oscars.org/news/post/the-fabelmans-steven-spielberg-academy-conversationshttps://www.smithsonianmag.com/history/the-making-of-steven-spielberg-180981184/

JAWS
Take a bite out of this week's episode on JAWS! We are joined again this week by guest Michael Moroz. Together we unpack this 1975 horror classic, the first ever summer blockbuster. Steven Speilberg's masterful direction keeps you on your toes through the entire movie, strategically hiding the shark until it can make maximum impact. The political themes in this movie of the mayor wanting to keep the beach open in order to protect business above people seems more relevant now more than ever? (Sounds very 2020) So let's dive deep into the waters of Amity…if you dare. Along with the film itself, these were some of the references I used in the creation of this episodehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CYtYIF_g-T4&t=101shttps://www.rogerebert.com/reviews/great-movie-jaws-1975https://www.nytimes.com/1975/06/21/archives/screen-entrapped-by-jaws-of-fear.htmlhttps://abcnews.go.com/US/50th-anniversary-jaws-film-impacted-public-perception-sharks/story?id=122572296

No Country for Old Men
This week on Get Your Popcorn, we dive into No Country for Old Men — a film that thrives on silence, tension, and the terrifying unpredictability of fate. Join me as I unpack the Coen Brothers' chilling masterpiece, which, for the first time, actually won me over. This was my first viewing and the first time I truly connected with a Coen Brothers film and I’ll tell you why. From Javier Bardem’s haunting performance as Anton Chigurh to the oppressive quiet that makes every moment feel like a coin toss with death, we explore how the film weaponizes stillness and strips away traditional storytelling in favor of something far more unsettling. We’ll talk about the film’s refusal to give easy answers, its meditation on inevitability and morality, and why that ending left me sitting in stunned silence. Is fate random? Is evil unstoppable? And can silence be louder than any score?
