Getting to Third Space with Lamar and Tom

You know about earworms, right? It’s a piece of music that gets stuck in your brain and won’t leave you alone. (“Baaabeee shark…”) Sorry about that. There are questions that are like earworms, too. In our last podcast our guest, Joel Kauffman, asked us if we are making a difference with Getting to 3rd Space and, if so, how do we know it. His questions have been earworms for us ever since. We started this podcast in September 2023. We are now in our 4th season and we’ve done 68 podcasts, most of them on audio and video. We are not tech savvy guys so we don’t know how to gather all the stats we need to know about our true reach. Because we do this for free, we can’t afford to hire anyone to do this kind of thing for us. So we do the next best thing…we try to make educated guesses based on the stats we can easily find and on feedback from listeners/viewers. Still, our minds have been spinning as we think about if we are having an impact with this podcast. What is the state of our democracy in the U.S. today? What does it mean to be a democracy? Lamar and Tom check in with historian Joel Kauffman on these and other questions. Joel Kauffman is a professor, coach, reader, and world citizen. His interest in the world in which we live has led him to learn more about it through the study of history and in conversations with people from all walks of life. Joel taught courses at Hesston College, including a couple with Lamar, engaged students and pushed them to think more carefully and critically about the world they were inheriting from their elders. In this episode of Getting to 3rd Space, we are going to try and answer a question we are getting more frequently from friends, followers, listeners, and viewers: “But what can I do about the situation in our country?” Frankly, we were a bit stuck. So we went to Perplexity (https://www.perplexity.ai/) and asked it this question: People ask me, about the current social and political situation in the United States, "What can we do?" What can I tell them?Here’s a summary of what we learned (and we’ve put a few links below if you want to learn more): First, don’t give your power away to despair. Feeling hopeless only helps the people who want us numb and quiet. Second, shift your focus to where you have real leverage: local life. Pick one local issue you care about—democracy, climate, housing, gun safety, public schools, racial justice—and commit to one concrete role.Third, invest in relationships. Talk with your neighbors, your faith or civic groups, your coworkers. Listen more than you lecture. Share good information. And finally, use the tools we have. Vote in every election, especially the small ones. Call or write your representatives once a month on the issues that matter to you. If enough of us do small, steady things in one chosen corner of public life, it adds up. Stephen Owens was Lamar & Tom’s first guest on Getting to 3rd Space in the first season of the podcast. About this EpisodeMichael Gaskins is a Philadelphian by birth and heart. In fact, he’ll take a soft, chewy Philly pretzel anytime over cookies. He began his career in television production with CBS, NBC, and CNN affiliates but has found himself drawn to work with incarcerated young men to help them prepare for their re-entry into society as citizens upon their release. For a time he operated a prison ministry to do that work and worked with Prison Fellowship (https://www.prisonfellowship.org/) as an area director. His desire to produce a reality TV show about young men returning to society from a prison sentence led him back to television production. For the past several years he has worked on TV courtroom shows including Relative Justice, Judge Steve Harvey, Tribunal Justice, and Judy Justice. In this conversation we learn more about his journey and the challenges of having open, honest, and civil conversations in the TV and film industry and also with young men in prison. Part 2 of 2. Lamar and Tom talk with Heidi and Guy Burgess who have been life and professional partners for more than 50 years. They received their PhDs in sociology in the same year from the University of Colorado. In the late 1980s they received a grant from the Hewlett Foundation to start a conflict resolution "theory-building center" that is now known as the Conflict Information Consortium. In addition to directing the Consortium, both Guy and Heidi taught peace and conflict at the University of Colorado, the University of Denver, and in George Mason University's School for Conflict Analysis and Resolution, now the Carter School for Peace and Conflict Resolution. As Co-Directors of the Consortium, the Burgesses have been able to self-design rather unusual careers which combined theory building, practice, and teaching using theories and strategies from many disciplines, not just sociology.  Drawn to complexity and systems theory very early by Kenneth Boulding's work, they almost always tried to focus on the big picture, focusing particularly on difficult conflict problems from international conflicts to environmental and public policy conflicts in the United States. Whether we like it, love it, or hate it, we are now in the midst of a full-blown Presidential campaign. The news just keeps happening. After the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump, President Joe Biden decided to end his run for a second term. He endorsed his Vice President, Kamala Harris, and all political parties are now in full campaign mode. As a result, conversations about politics will be unavoidable for most of us. Though we try to avoid politics in our podcast, we are going to try something a bit different. We are going to talk about the issues in the campaign (not the personalities) and offer some suggestions for how you can have similar conversations on political topics. Lamar was the Director of Human Resources at Excel and his leadership role thrust him into the midst of dealing with the shooting and its aftermath on behalf of the company. That’s what we discussed in our last podcast. Today, though, we are going to do a dive into the personal impact of the shooting for Lamar, his family, and his community.  Hesston, Kansas is a Mennonite community. Mennonites are a Christian sect which are often confused with the Amish because they share a religious history. Mennonites are one of three historic “peace” churches in the Christian tradition, the other two being Quakers and Church of Brethren. Lamar and his wife Karla grew up in Mennonite families and raised their children in the Mennonite church. Excel Industries was also owned by a Mennonite family and Hesston College, a Mennonite school, was founded in the community in 1909.  Knowing about these deep, pacifist Mennonite roots of Hesston, Kansas is important for understanding and appreciating both the trauma of the event on the people of the community and, also, how they responded.  If you haven’t had a chance to listen or watch the previous podcast that tells the story of the shooting, we hope you’ll do that before jumping into this one. Lamar and Tom talk with Kansas State Senator Carolyn McGinn In today’s podcast Lamar and Tom welcome Kansas State Senator Carolyn McGinn. Senator McGinn has represented the 31st District as a Republican since 2005. Prior to serving in the Kansas Senate, she was a Sedgwick County Commissioner. She and her husband, Mark, own and operate McGinn’s Grapes and Grain, a family farm outside of Wichita, Kansas.  In 2012 Senator McGinn was one of nine Kansas senators whose seats were targeted by members of the “Right Wing” of the Republican party. She was the only one who was able to retain her seat.  In January 2025, Carolyn McGinn will retire from some 26 years in political life. She and Mark will focus their retirement on using their farm to promote agri-tourism. Welcome to Getting to Third Space with Lamar & Tom! If you are in the United States, it is a holiday (Memorial Day). Tom’s out chasing a golf ball around a local golf course and Lamar is out taking more beautiful photos. At least, that’s what we hope we are doing today. In our absence, we are offering a redux of one of our earliest podcasts from October 21, 2023. We titled it Barriers, Bears, and Gummy Bears.  We won’t say it is a “Best of” Getting to Third Space because we were still learning a lot about doing a podcast. However, the topic is important because it focuses on the barriers that often prevent us from having difficult but important conversations with family, friends, and peers.The barriers we consider are internal barriers - those attitudes, ideas, expectations, even beliefs we hold - that may hold us back from engaging in civil conversation with people whose ideas, opinions, experiences, and lives are different from our own. Then we offer four guidelines for overcoming or “checking” those barriers to make it easier to engage others. About Today’s Episode - A Table Talk on Gun Regulation Today’s show features a Table Talk about gun regulation. You’ll remember that Table Talk is a new, occasional feature that we’ll include in Getting to Third Space. It was inspired by the kitchen table in the farm homes we grew up in where it was a central gathering place. Not only did we eat there, but we played games, entertained guests, and had conversations. Sometimes the conversations were light and fun. Sometimes they were serious conversations about differing ideas and perspectives on important issues. The subjects being tackled in our Table Talks have no simple solution so don’t expect us to resolve anything.
