Give Attendance to Reading

Welcome to Give Attendance to Reading, with Max and Charlie Taylor. This podcast was born out of our love for reading and discussing theology and Christian ministry, and it has grown to include topics such as culture, geo-politics, and practical Christian living. Our goal is to cover the best books in Christian literature, one chapter at a time. By listening in each week, not only will you hear a summary of each book, but you will also get commentary on the topics discussed along with our take on how to apply the information to our everyday lives. Thanks for listening, let’s get into it!

    083. Instruction from the Shepherds

Pilgrim’s Progress by John Bunyan   The tired pilgrims reach the Delectable Mountains where they encounter four shepherds, Knowledge, Experience, Watchful, and Sincere, who resemble faithful pastors imparting wisdom to their flocks. During their time with these four shepherds, Christian and Hopeful are instructed and given timely cautions for the rest of their journey.   Next week we will discuss pages 166-176 to “The Flatterer’s Net” of Pilgrim’s Progress.     Order the next book we will be discussing on the podcast: Stop, In the Name of God: Why Honoring the Sabbath will Transform Your Life by Charlie Kirk   Thriftbooks: Click Here   Amazon: Click Here   We will start this book in April.

    082. Giant Despair and Doubting Castle

Pilgrim’s Progress by John Bunyan   Shortly after their time of reprieve at the River of God, Christian and Hopeful go astray into the By-Path Meadow and are caught by Giant Despair. We get to preview the effects sin has in the life of a believer as the two pilgrims are brutally beaten by Giant Despair and trapped in Doubting Castle. Next week we will see how they escape.   Next week we will discuss pages 156-166 to “Turn-Away’s Destruction” of Pilgrim’s Progress.     Order the next book we will be discussing on the podcast: Stop, In the Name of God: Why Honoring the Sabbath will Transform Your Life by Charlie Kirk   Thriftbooks: Click Here   Amazon: Click Here   We will start this book in April.

    081. Worldly Travelers, Demas, and Lot’s Wife

Pilgrim’s Progress by John Bunyan   As Christian and Hopeful continue their journey, they are confronted by By-Ends and his three companions. After this encounter, they meet Demas beside the path who invites them to turn aside to see a silver mine. Finally, they come across Lot’s wife, who was turned into a pillar of salt. These meetings serve as sobering reminders to Christian and Hopeful as they hurry towards the Celestial City.   Next week we will discuss pages 146-156 to “The Key of Promise” of Pilgrim’s Progress.     Order the next book we will be discussing on the podcast: Stop, In the Name of God: Why Honoring the Sabbath will Transform Your Life by Charlie Kirk   Thriftbooks (recommended): Click Here   Amazon (currently on backorder): Click Here   We will start this book in April.

    080. Faithful is Martyred

Pilgrim’s Progress by John Bunyan   In this section, Faithful is martyred for his faith. His courage and stand for the truth cost him his life, but ultimately he was ushered into the presence of God even before Christian was. May we have the same conviction and spiritual strength in our own lives.   Next week we will discuss pages 134-146 to “The River of God” of Pilgrim’s Progress.

    079. Vanity Fair

Pilgrim’s Progress by John Bunyan   In their journey, Christian and Faithful encounter their old friend Evangelist who gives them wise counsel and exhorts them to withstand the coming trials they were sure to face. Then they head into Vanity Fair, where they meet with new challenges and persecution. We will see what happens to them next week.   Next week we will discuss pages 123-133 of Pilgrim’s Progress.

  6. 82

    078. Talkative’s Hypocrisy Revealed

Pilgrim’s Progress by John Bunyan   Faithful and Christian discuss those who profess Christianity but do not follow it in their hearts. In fact, Christian claims to know Talkative better than he knows himself. The way Faithful speaks to Talkative teaches us a great deal about how we ought to confront those who say the right things but have no desire to follow Christ in their hearts.   Next week we will discuss pages 113-122 of Pilgrim’s Progress.

  7. 81

    077. The Godly Example of Faithful

Pilgrim’s Progress by John Bunyan   Christian learns of Faithful’s experiences as they journey and talk together, and their fellowship is a great encouragement to one another. As they continue in the way, they  encounter a character named Talkative, who Faithful initially takes a liking to, but who Christian knows better. We will see more on his character next week.   Next week we will discuss pages 103-113 to “Evangelist Joins the Pilgrims” of Pilgrim’s Progress.

  8. 80

    076. The Valley of the Shadow of Death

Pilgrim’s Progress by John Bunyan   The Valley of the Shadow of Death was a terrifying section of Christian’s journey, where he cried out to God in prayer to protect him from the many dangers that surrounded him. After coming through the difficulties, he looked back and could see his course with clarity and understanding. Then he met Faithful who became a companion with him in his journey. As the two of them walked together, they discussed the things Faithful had experienced up to that point.   Next week we will discuss pages 94-103 to “Christian on Talkative’s Character” of Pilgrim’s Progress.

  9. 79

    075. Fighting Apollyon

Pilgrim’s Progress by John Bunyan   The Christian life is full of spiritual warfare, and today we see Christian being equipped with the armor of God, fighting with Apollyon, and entering the Valley of the Shadow of Death. Through the doubts, attacks, and discouragement, Christian clings to God’s Word and stays faithful to his Master. This is a great depiction of the everyday Christian life. May we strive to remain as committed to Christ as Christian was. Thanks for listening!   Next week we will discuss pages 84-94 to “How Moses Treated Faithful” of Pilgrim’s Progress.

  10. 78

    074. Christian’s Fellowship and Spiritual Armor

Pilgrim’s Progress by John Bunyan   While at Palace Beautiful, Christian enjoys edifying conversation, a good meal, and a peaceful night’s rest—all of which prepare him for the arduous journey ahead. It is here that he is fitted with armor to protect him in the way. We see pictures of the church, the Lord’s Supper, sanctification, looking forward to heaven, heroes of the faith, and more. Next week, Christian will be back on the journey towards the Celestial City.   Next week we will discuss pages 75-84 to “The Horrors of the Valley” of Pilgrim’s Progress.

  11. 77

    073. The Difficult Way to Palace Beautiful

Pilgrim’s Progress by John Bunyan   As Christian goes along the way, he encounters sojourners who try taking a shortcut that ends in destruction and some travelers who become discouraged at the dangers of the journey and decide to turn back. Even with a poor decision of his own, Christian continues to trek towards the Celestial City despite the challenges, and at last he comes to the Palace Beautiful where he can safely and comfortably spend the night on his journey.   Next week we will discuss pages 64-74 (to the end of the page) of Pilgrim’s Progress.

  12. 76

    072. Christian Reaches the Cross

Pilgrim’s Progress by John Bunyan   What better section to discuss on the week of Thanksgiving than when Christian arrives at the cross. We have everything to be thankful for in our salvation, as we are reminded when Christian reaches the cross and is freed of his burden. We hope you will take time to thank God for the wondrous gift of salvation this week!   Next week we will discuss pages 54-64 to “Discourse with Piety” of Pilgrim’s Progress.

  13. 75

    071. Gospel Lessons from Interpreter

Pilgrim’s Progress by John Bunyan   Christian makes it to the narrow gate, where he is directed to the house of the Interpreter. While he is there, he hears multiple lessons on the gospel that are helpful for us to internalize. This section sparks some good conversation about the difference between grace and works. When we get all the components of the gospel aligned—faith, grace, repentance, change—it is such a beautiful thing. Pilgrim’s Progress presents all of these really well.   Next week we will discuss pages 45-53 (to the end of the page) of Pilgrim’s Progress.

  14. 74

    070. Christian's Dangerous Detour

Pilgrim’s Progress by John Bunyan   Not long after Christian goes through the Slough of Despond, he encounters Mr. Worldly Wiseman who counsels him to take a shortcut to getting his burden removed. His advice was to go up a steep mountain to the house of Mr. Legality, who lived in the city of Morality. This journey proved perilous to Christian who is finally encountered by Evangelist and instructed to return to the way God’s Word directed.   Next week we will discuss pages 35-45 up to “The Fire of Grace” of Pilgrim’s Progress.

  15. 73

    069. Pilgrim’s Journey Begins

Pilgrim’s Progress by John Bunyan   In the opening pages of this allegory, we see Christian recognize his burden, flee from the wrath to come upon the city of Destruction, trudge through the slough of despond, and encounter people who both help and hinder him along the way. It is a good reminder of what genuine repentance looks like and the persuasion our faith should have in our lives. It will be two weeks before we see Christian make it to the cross, but these beginning steps are crucial.   Next week we will discuss pages 24-35 up to “Christian Enters in at the Gate” of Pilgrim’s Progress.

  16. 72

    068. Introduction to Pilgrim’s Progress

Pilgrim’s Progress by John Bunyan   Pilgrim’s Progress is our second book on the show, and we’re excited to read it together. Today we discuss the introduction to this book as well as our own story of starting this podcast. Thanks for listening!   Next week we will discuss pages 13-24 up to “Christian Meets Mr. Worldly Wiseman” of Pilgrim’s Progress.

    067. Vol. 5, Ch. 17: Idolatry

Life in Christ by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones   NEXT BOOK: The Pilgrim’s Progress by John Bunyan (Moody Classics Edition)   LINK: https://www.amazon.com/dp/0802456545?ref_=ppx_hzsearch_conn_dt_b_fed_asin_title_1   What an important note to end this epistle of 1 John on. We all have the tendency to put other things in the place of God—especially ourselves. It is important that we take a serious look at ourselves, at the idols that tempt us, and at our Lord Jesus Christ. With that, we finish this great devotional work by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones. After we take a couple weeks off, we will be back to jump into our next book, Pilgrim’s Progress. Click the link above to order a copy if you want to read along!   Next time we will be starting our new book, Pilgrim’s Progress.

    066. Vol. 5, Ch. 16: Understanding

Life in Christ by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones   NEXT BOOK: The Pilgrim’s Progress by John Bunyan (Moody Classics Edition)   LINK: https://www.amazon.com/dp/0802456545?ref_=ppx_hzsearch_conn_dt_b_fed_asin_title_1   This is such a reassuring verse in 1 John that explains the understanding we can have through Jesus and the Holy Spirit. Knowledge of the truth and objective moral clarity only come through belief in Jesus, for Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life.” We are consoled that one day “the wise will understand.”   Next week we will be discussing the reading from volume 5, chapter 17 of “Life in Christ” by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones (pages 725-735).

  20. 68

    065. Vol. 5, Ch. 15: Of God

Life in Christ by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones   NEXT BOOK: The Pilgrim’s Progress by John Bunyan (Moody Classics Edition)   LINK: https://www.amazon.com/dp/0802456545?ref_=ppx_hzsearch_conn_dt_b_fed_asin_title_1   We talked about the world lying in wickedness last week, but today we are looking at what it means to be “of God.” This is the most important question to settle in your mind because it determines your eternity. We are each either of the world or of God. So what does it mean to be of God? Listen in to hear our discussion.   Next week we will be discussing the reading from volume 5, chapter 16 of “Life in Christ” by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones (pages 713-724).

  21. 67

    064. Vol. 5, Ch. 14: The Life of the World

Life in Christ by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones   NEXT BOOK: The Pilgrim’s Progress by John Bunyan (Moody Classics Edition)   LINK: https://www.amazon.com/dp/0802456545?ref_=ppx_hzsearch_conn_dt_b_fed_asin_title_1   As believers, we are distinct from the world because we have been made the children of God. Many Christians, however, try to live just like the world and not be distinct. This chapter discusses the problems with that outlook and what it means that the world is of the wicked one. We will finish up this verse next week.   Next week we will be discussing the reading from volume 5, chapter 15 of “Life in Christ” by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones (pages 703-712).

  22. 66

    063. Vol. 5, Ch. 13: Safe in the Arms of Jesus

Life in Christ by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones   NEXT BOOK: The Pilgrim’s Progress by John Bunyan (Moody Classics Edition)   LINK: https://www.amazon.com/dp/0802456545?ref_=ppx_hzsearch_conn_dt_b_fed_asin_title_1   The topic of praying for a brother who has fallen into sin (from last episode) brings up the subject of believers’ relationship to sin. It’s not that believers are incapable of sinning, or even that we are capable of ceasing from sin, but that we are no longer defined by a lifestyle of sin. This chapter also gets into human responsibility and God’s preservation. May we have full assurance that we are safe in the arms of Jesus.   Next week we will be discussing the reading from volume 5, chapter 14 of “Life in Christ” by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones (pages 691-701).

  23. 65

    062. Vol. 5, Ch. 12: Prayer for the Brethren

Life in Christ by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones   NEXT BOOK: The Pilgrim’s Progress by John Bunyan (Moody Classics Edition)   LINK: https://www.amazon.com/dp/0802456545?ref_=ppx_hzsearch_conn_dt_b_fed_asin_title_1   Continuing the discussion on prayer, today we are looking at prayer for the brethren. It is important that we pray for other believers when we see each other struggling with faults and failures. How do we do that? What should characterize our prayers for each other? And also, who should we not pray for? Listen to our discussion to hear commentary from D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones and our own thoughts.   Next week we will be discussing the reading from volume 5, chapter 13 of “Life in Christ” by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones (pages 681-690).

  24. 64

    061. Vol. 5, Ch. 11: Prayer with Confidence

Life in Christ by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones   NEXT BOOK: Pilgrim’s Progress by John Bunyan (Moody Classics Edition)   LINK: https://www.amazon.com/dp/0802456545?ref_=ppx_hzsearch_conn_dt_b_fed_asin_title_1   Today we discuss how to have greater confidence in prayer, and it is a convicting subject. The encouraging thing is we can have confidence that the Lord hears us and be sure we have the things we ask if we heed these verses. This topic is so impactful. Our hope is that through hearing this discussion and the verses we reference, we will all be challenged to grow our prayer lives and pray for things according to the Lord’s will.   Next week we will be discussing the reading from volume 5, chapter 12 of “Life in Christ” by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones (pages 669-680).

  25. 63

    060. Vol. 5, Ch. 10: The Life of God

Life in Christ by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones   Eternal life is the theme of all of Scripture, and what we discuss today is really one big application from the entire Bible. Christ gives abundant life and He wants us to be sure we know Him. In this chapter, Jones responds to two objections that are raised to having eternal assurance. We discuss the profound and practical aspects that allow us to confidently claim that we have this eternal life.   Next week we will be discussing the reading from volume 5, chapter 11 of “Life in Christ” by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones (pages 657-668).

  26. 62

    059. Vol. 5, Ch. 9: Certain Knowledge

Life in Christ by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones   Assurance of salvation is not only something that is possible for every believer, it is what God intends for us. This is one of John’s great themes throughout this epistle, and he reiterates it here in 1 John 5:13, one of the most well-known verses on assurance. In this episode, we discuss the topic of assurance in general, break down this verse phrase-by-phrase, and offer some personal thoughts and reflections on eternal security and assurance. We will continue the discussion on this topic next week. See you then!   Next week we will be discussing the reading from volume 5, chapter 10 of “Life in Christ” by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones (pages 645-655).

  27. 61

    058. Vol. 5, Ch. 8: Eternal Life

Life in Christ by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones   Today we look at the reasons for believing Jesus of Nazareth is the Messiah and the results of believing this. This follows right after the claim that was mentioned in 1 John 5:6-8 which we have discussed in the previous two episodes. As we look at the support behind this claim, we also get into what gives us confidence in our faith personally, and it all has to do with the testimony of Christ. Thanks for listening!   Next week we will be discussing the reading from volume 5, chapter 9 of “Life in Christ” by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones (pages 637-644).

  28. 60

    057. Vol. 5, Ch. 7: The Three Witnesses

Life in Christ by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones   “And there are three that bear witness in earth, the spirit, and the water, and the blood: and these three agree in one.” Today we discuss what these three witnesses mean and what this represents for us today. God has certainly left sufficient witness that Jesus is the Christ.   Next week we will be discussing the reading from volume 5, chapter 8 of “Life in Christ” by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones (pages 631-636).

  29. 59

    056. Vol. 5, Ch. 6: The God-Man (Translations and Textual Criticism Discussion)

Life in Christ by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones   Today we respond to the arguments for textual criticism D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones raises in this chapter. Some things we consider include (1) the timeline of the text, (2) the technique of translation, (3) the tenants of textual criticism, (4) the testimony of the translators, and (5) the theology of Scripture itself. We have no personal dislike for anyone who chooses to use a different version of the Bible, but defending the King James translation is something we think is important. Thanks for hearing us out!   Next week we will be discussing the reading from volume 5, chapter 7 of “Life in Christ” by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones (pages 623-629).

  30. 58

    055. Vol. 5, Ch. 5: How Faith Overcomes

Life in Christ by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones   How does faith actually overcome the world? In today’s episode, we look at D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones’ answer to this question from a message he preached at Westminster Chapel in London around 1950. We look at the positional and practical aspects of faith in Christ as well as what to do when we fail in our walk with God and what our faith should ultimately be resting in.   Next week we will be discussing the reading from volume 5, chapter 6 of “Life in Christ” by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones (pages 615-622).

  31. 57

    054. Vol. 5, Ch. 4: Faith in Christ

Life in Christ by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones   When it comes to the world, we must realize that we need to overcome it, and we must go about it the right way. Some don’t seem to realize there is any problem with the world, and others try to remove themselves from the world, but neither approach is what our Lord wants. We must realize that only by our faith in Christ and being born of God have we already overcome the world and we are empowered to continue overcoming it. May we emphasize our relationship to Christ and fill ourselves with things that will build our faith as we live in this world.   Next week we will be discussing the reading from volume 5, chapter 5 of “Life in Christ” by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones (pages 605-613).

  32. 56

    053. Vol. 5, Ch. 3: Overcomers

Life in Christ by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones   How do we view God’s Word and His commandments? What is the world? And what does it mean to be an overcomer? We discuss these questions on today’s episode as we continue through the final volume of this deep dive in 1 John by Martyn Lloyd-Jones.    Next week we will be discussing the reading from volume 5, chapter 4 of “Life in Christ” by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones (pages 595-603).

  33. 55

    052. Vol. 5, Ch. 2: The Wholeness of the Christian Life

Life in Christ by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones   In a slight change of pace, Jones spends the majority of this message on the writing style of John rather than the specific content of this chapter, and it is really good to read and talk about! How can we better view the Christian life as a walk that encompasses every aspect of our lives? How can we take inventory of how we are doing in our growth in Christlikeness? May we live our whole lives for Him.   Next week we will be discussing the reading from volume 5, chapter 3 of “Life in Christ” by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones (pages 585-594).

  34. 54

    051. Vol. 5, Ch. 1: The NT Definition of a Christian

Life in Christ by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones   This is one of our most in-depth conversations on why we disagree with reformed theology, since it comes out so heavily in this chapter. It is good to reflect on the gospel, and defining what a Christian is Biblically is a good exercise in our articulation of sound doctrine. We also discuss the common bond that believers share and our confidence in our eternal security.   Next week we will be discussing the reading from volume 5, chapter 2 of “Life in Christ” by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones (pages 575-584).

  35. 53

    050. Vol. 4, Ch. 15: Members of the Same Family

Life in Christ by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones   Love for the brethren is a natural result if we have experienced the love of God. The struggle oftentimes is moving beyond the thought of love to actually putting that love to practice in our daily lives. It requires viewing people the way God views them, treating each other as the spiritual family we are, and making the choice to esteem each other better than ourselves. May we practice more of this brotherly love as we go throughout our week.   Next week we will be discussing the reading from volume 5, chapter 1 of “Life in Christ” by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones (pages 565-574).

  36. 52

    049. Vol. 4, Ch. 14: Free From Fear

Life in Christ by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones   The topic of how the believer should relate to the fear of the Lord is a deep one, but one with some really important implications for daily life. Should the believer fear the Lord? If so, why? How should the relationship change as the believer matures? Do we fear the judgment? What about assurance of salvation? We tackle all of these questions and more in today’s podcast.   Next week we will be discussing the reading from volume 4, chapter 15 of “Life in Christ” by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones (pages 549-559).

  37. 51

    048. Vol. 4, Ch. 13: That Great Day

Life in Christ by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones   Today we discuss the different resurrections and judgments that are mentioned in Scripture in order to understand our passage in 1 John. We should be motivated by the judgment of Christ, and as believers, it is a comfort to know that we will not have to face the wrath of God. May we look to the judgment of Christ to help us prefect our love for God and for our brethren.   Next week we will be discussing the reading from volume 4, chapter 14 of “Life in Christ” by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones (pages 537-547).

  38. 50

    047. Vol. 4, Ch. 12: Dwelling in Love

Life in Christ by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones   In this episode we talk about defining love, dwelling in love, and displaying love to others without burning out. We think it will be an extremely helpful discussion for believers who are trying to live as Christ did. The topic of love is highly relevant in our increasingly divided culture, and we are glad we got to work through it in this recording. Let us know if you have anything to add to the discussion. You can get in touch through the email that is listed at the bottom of our podcast website.   Next week we will be discussing the reading from volume 4, chapter 13 of “Life in Christ” by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones (pages 527-535).

  39. 49

    046. Vol. 4, Ch. 11: Knowing the Love of God

Life in Christ by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones   We delve into the objective and subjective sides of the love of God in today's conversation, and try to show how both are important. The Christian life must be guided by the truth, but these beliefs should result in real lived experiences for the Believer. There are several specific ways to know the love of God listed in the chapter, and we touch on those as well.   Next week we will be discussing the reading from volume 4, chapter 12 of “Life in Christ” by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones (pages 517-526).

  40. 48

    045. Vol. 4, Ch. 10: The Savior

Life in Christ by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones   Today we get to look at all that Jesus accomplished in our salvation and what it means that He is our Savior. Contrary to the opinion that Jesus is merely a good example for us to follow (which is a hopeless message that leads to despair), Jesus already accomplished our salvation and all we have to do is accept it. The saving work of Christ goes so far beyond His death on the cross for us, we have so much to be thankful for!   Next week we will be discussing the reading from volume 4, chapter 11 of “Life in Christ” by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones (pages 507-516).

  41. 47

    044. Vol. 4, Ch. 9: The Apostolic Witness and Testimony

Life in Christ by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones   God’s Word is certainly everything we need in this life to be sustained and guided in a life of obedience to the Lord. We are excited to discuss this lofty passage that emphasizes the coming of Christ to save us from our sin. We also talk about the role of the Holy Spirit in leading us into truth and the absolute authority of God’s Word. You don’t want to miss this episode!   Next week we will be discussing the reading from volume 4, chapter 10 of “Life in Christ” by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones (pages 497-506).

  42. 46

    043. Vol. 4, Ch. 8: The Fullness of Blessing

Life in Christ by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones   Every believer is on a journey towards sanctification, but that path is not always easy. There will undoubtedly be periods of varying emotions and experiences. That is not to say that some Christians have achieved a higher status or level of spirituality, however. We have all been given the full blessing of the Spirit of God at the one-time event of salvation. What we experience after that point depends on our closeness with our Father and whether we follow correct teaching, have correct motives, and live obediently to the impulses of the Spirit. The life God intends for us is really quite simple to understand, but quite hard to follow in this life. We certainly don’t have it all figured out, but we hope this discussion will resonate with you where you are in your walk with God.   Next week we will be discussing the reading from volume 4, chapter 9 of “Life in Christ” by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones (pages 485-495).

  43. 45

    042. Vol. 4, Ch. 7: The Gift of God’s Spirit

Life in Christ by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones   Continuing on the theme of our assurance, this chapter gives us three aspects of our Christian life: (1) that the essence of the Christian life is abiding in Christ, (2) that we can know that we have eternal life, and (3) that we can know this by the Spirit of God dwelling in us. We also discuss challenges of presenting Christianity properly to the lost around us and the benefits of the Spirit indwelling us.   Next week we will be discussing the reading from volume 4, chapter 8 of “Life in Christ” by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones (pages 473-483).

  44. 44

    041. Vol. 4, Ch. 6: God Dwells In Us

Life in Christ by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones   Jones gets into the mechanics of our verse today, which is a good reminder of what it looks like to conduct deep Bible study. Things like asking the text questions, comparing Scripture with cross-references from itself, and connecting every verse with the context and flow are important Bible study techniques. The main takeaway is the importance of living by faith and loving God because of His love for us. That will produce the love for the brethren that is emphasized here.   Next week we will be discussing the reading from volume 4, chapter 7 of “Life in Christ” by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones (pages 463-472).

    040. Vol. 4, Ch. 5: We Ought Also…

Life in Christ by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones   There are so many benefits to expository study of Scripture. In today’s message from D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones, we see the natural outworking of understanding the love of God. It is important that we understand Christianity is not merely truth to be contemplated, it must be lived. It is so good to incorporate Bible study in your devotions, but may we live out the truths we discover and not just be enamored with the thoughts.   Next week we will be discussing the reading from volume 4, chapter 6 of “Life in Christ” by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones (pages 451-462).

    039. Vol. 4, Ch. 4: The Manifest Love of God

Life in Christ by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones   Link to the One Line A Day 5-year Memory Journal by Chronicle Books on Amazon (no, we don't get any commission if you purchase this...sadly😂)   What a timely reminder of God’s amazing love for us as we head into a new year. Lloyd-Jones argues that a lack of understanding God’s love is one of the greatest needs of our time. This is so important because we will not be able to love one another adequately without first having an appreciation for God’s love for us as displayed in His act of sending Christ to die in our place. We hope the discussion and personal anecdotes cause you to reflect on God’s love more throughout this year. Always remember, we love Him because He loved us first!   Next week we will be discussing the reading from volume 4, chapter 5 of “Life in Christ” by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones (pages 441-450).

    038. Vol. 4, Ch. 3: Born of God

Life in Christ by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones   If you were able to read this chapter, we trust you were encouraged by its contents. On the show we discuss things like the essentialness of brotherly love, the history of Israel’s love for God, the failure of the church at Ephesus in losing their first love, the importance of our love for God and the love of God, as well as the differences between John’s poetic style of writing and Paul’s logical style. If there is one thing that is probably the most important practical takeaway, the challenge to read the gospels cannot be overstressed. Seeing and studying the love of Christ is one of the best ways to replicate it.   Next week we will be discussing the reading from volume 4, chapter 4 of “Life in Christ” by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones (pages 429-439).

    037. Vol. 4, Ch. 2: The All-sufficiency of Christ

Life in Christ by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones   Jones continues discussing the importance of testing the Spirits in this week’s chapter, and he does so by showing the centrality of Christ in our doctrine. He points out that anyone who misrepresents Christ is not of God. This includes getting the virgin birth, incarnation, atonement, or any other teaching of Christ wrong. We discuss the dangers of progressive Christianity and subtle shifts away from sound doctrine that are prevalent in the church today. Don’t let anything detract from Christ.   Next week we will be discussing the reading from volume 4, chapter 3 of “Life in Christ” by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones (pages 419-428).

    036. Vol. 4, Ch. 1: Test the Spirits

Life in Christ by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones   To follow up from last week, we are looking at the importance of not only having the Holy Spirit, but also testing the Spirits. This chapter emphasizes the importance of balance to avoid extremes, how a person’s lived experiences affect their message, and why it sometimes feels as though we are fighting error on multiple fronts from multiple directions. It was a helpful read for both of us, and we hope you enjoy the conversation.   Next week we will be discussing the reading from volume 4, chapter 2 of “Life in Christ” by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones (pages 409-418).

    035. Vol. 3, Ch. 11: The Holy Spirit

Life in Christ by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones   Today we get to talk about the often neglected topic of the Holy Spirit. We discuss how to be surrendered to the Holy Spirit, errors of the charismatic movement, the day of Pentecost, and how the gift of the Holy Spirit pertains to salvation, the Christian, and the church. The Holy Spirit is vital to our spiritual lives and we would do well to study Him and appreciate Him more.   Next week we will be discussing the reading from volume 4, chapter 1 of “Life in Christ” by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones (pages 391-408).
