Not Everything Hurts the Same: The Truth About Trauma
We live in a culture that calls everything trauma, but clinically and biblically, that word carries a weight that not every hard experience meets. And when we misuse it, we do more damage than we realize. In this episode of Hope for the Mind, Kristin breaks down what trauma actually is, the clinical definition, the three types, and the four specific markers that have to be present for something to qualify as traumatic. She also brings the Word into it, because scripture has a lot to say about the difference between trials that build us and wounds that need healing. This episode is for you if: You've wondered whether what you're carrying is actually trauma You've used the word loosely and want more clarity You're supporting someone who is hurting and need better language You've been told to "just pray about it" and felt like something was missing You'll leave this episode with a clearer understanding of your own pain, better language to describe it, and the confidence to know when to seek professional support, without shame and without compromising your faith. Hope for the Mind exists at the intersection of faith and mental health — because you deserve both.

Anxiety Isn’t Sin: What God Actually Says About Your Worry
Anxiety is something almost all of us experience… but so many people quietly carry the weight of wondering: “If I feel anxious… does that mean something is wrong with my faith?” In this episode of Hope for the Mind, we gently unpack the truth. Blending both psychological insight and biblical perspective, this conversation breaks down what anxiety actually is, why your body responds the way it does, and what Scripture really says about it. You’ll learn the difference between feeling anxiety and being controlled by it, and why experiencing anxious thoughts does not make you weak, or sinful. Together, we’ll walk through: What anxiety is from a brain and body perspective Common spiritual misunderstandings around anxiety Biblical examples that prove anxiety is not sin How Scripture and psychology actually align Practical, faith-centered ways to respond when anxiety shows up If you’ve ever felt shame, confusion, or guilt around your anxiety, this episode is for you. Most importantly, it invites listeners to approach themselves and others with greater compassion, curiosity, and understanding—because not every struggle is loud, and not every brain works the same way. The True Cost of Media
In this episode of Hope for the Mind, we’re stripping away the “it’s just entertainment” excuse and looking directly at how social media, movies, and music are actively reshaping the way you think. Not just what you feel in a moment—but what you believe is normal, acceptable, and true. We walk through how algorithms study your behavior, how repetition turns lies into “truth,” and how entertainment quietly shifts your definition of right and wrong. You’ll hear about concepts like the illusory truth effect, cultivation theory, echo chambers, and the continued influence effect—all backed by real psychological and media research, not just opinion. You’ll learn: How repeated messages change what your brain accepts as true How long-term media exposure can rewrite your sense of reality How social media echo chambers and confirmation bias lock you into one way of thinking Why misinformation and distorted values still influence you even after you “know better” Practical, biblical steps to guard what gets into your mind and protect your worldview If you’ve ever felt like your thoughts, standards, or convictions have quietly shifted over time, this episode will help you see why—and how to start taking your mind back. Research & Resources Mentioned: Illusory truth effect (repetition increasing perceived truth of statements and headlines) — articles and studies summarized on PubMed Central (PMC), ScienceDirect, and The Decision Lab. Cultivation Theory and long-term media exposure shaping perceptions of reality and social norms — overviews from Simply Psychology and Verywell Mind, plus empirical work discussed via PMC and Montgomery College Pressbooks. Echo chambers and confirmation bias in social media — discussions and studies accessible through EBSCO, PubMed Central (PMC), and Wikipedia entries on echo chambers and confirmation bias. Our Children are Not Okay
Today’s episode isn’t easy—but it’s urgent. Our children are growing up in a world we never had to navigate, and many are silently falling apart under the weight of anxiety, depression, identity confusion, and trauma. In this raw and necessary conversation, I open up about what’s really happening in the lives of our youth—and how the systems meant to support them (home, school, and church) are often missing the mark. We’ll confront the hard truths: why suicide rates among teens are skyrocketing, why emotional disconnection is so prevalent in modern families, and how the Church sometimes fails to create space for real healing. But this episode isn’t just a lament—it’s a call to action. A call for parents to show up differently, for educators to rethink their role, and for churches to become true sanctuaries of hope and restoration. This is a conversation about showing up. About listening. About creating safety. About becoming the hands and heart of Jesus to a generation drowning in silence. If you’re a parent, teacher, pastor, or mentor—this episode is for you. Because it’s not too late. Because our kids are worth fighting for. Because hope is still alive. Follow us on Instagram Find us on Facebook Website

The Problem with Self-Diagnosis
Why does it seem like everyone thinks they have ADHD or Autism these days? In this episode of Hope for the Mind, Kristin unpacks the psychological phenomenon known as the Barnum Effect—the tendency to believe vague, general traits apply specifically to us. With the rise of mental health content online, it's easy to mistake common human struggles for clinical disorders. But not every relatable post equals a diagnosis. Join Kristin as she explores: What the Barnum Effect is and how it tricks us Why self-diagnosing can be harmful, even with good intentions The difference between psychological traits and clinical criteria How to approach your mental health with both wisdom and faith This episode is a must-listen for anyone questioning their identity, sifting through online content, or simply trying to better understand themselves without rushing to a label. ✨ You are more than a diagnosis. Shame: The Lie That Says You're Unlovable
Shame doesn’t whisper—it screams. It tells you that you're unworthy, unlovable, too broken to be healed. But shame is a lie, and it’s time we call it out. In this raw and powerful episode of Hope for the Mind, Kristin opens up about a topic many avoid: shame—how it infects our identity, sabotages relationships, distorts faith, and even leads some to the edge of despair. With biblical insight and psychological depth, she explores how shame differs from guilt, why it thrives in silence, and how even churches—places meant for healing—can become breeding grounds for shame if we’re not careful. From Adam and Eve to the woman at the well, Scripture shows us a God who doesn't run from the ashamed but runs toward them. Shame may try to rewrite your story, but grace has the final word. This episode speaks directly to the heart of anyone who has ever felt “less than,” who hides behind a smile, or who wonders if the world would be better without them. If that’s you—or someone you know—please listen. Please share. And if you’re struggling, don’t do it alone. Call or text 988, or visit hftmpodcast.com for more resources. You are not your past. You are not your pain. You are not your shame. You are loved—and you are needed. Follow us on Instagram Find us on Facebook Website
