A chore to get through. But something unexpected happened. The things that have truly stayed with us… are the small ones.In this episode, we talk about how food shopping in the UK has become an experience — a rhythm to the week, a chance to connect with people, and even a moment to slow down and notice life. From popping into the little shops for a few items, to discovering the difference with eggs (yes, eggs), or how to make a big night at home, it’s the little touches and cultural quirks that have made grocery trips surprisingly joyful. It’s also a glimpse into our day-to-day life as a family — watching our daughters enjoy these small routines, feeling the rhythm of British shops, and noticing how these simple moments shape the way we live (and eat).Because in the end, it’s not just about the food.A simple errand that feels anything but simple in the UK. Living in England Changed How We See Everyday

Anglophile: (noun)A person who has a deep appreciation for England — its culture, traditions, countryside, and everyday rhythms of life. For some, it’s the history and landmarks that draw them in; for others, it’s the quieter comforts — birdsong in the morning, daffodils in spring, and a bench perfectly placed to take it all in. When we imagined life in England, we thought the big things would be what made it special — the history, the landmarks, the castles, the iconic places we’d only ever seen in films and photos. But something unexpected happened. The things that have truly stayed with us… are the small ones.In this episode, we talk about Brett’s lifelong love of Britain and what it’s actually felt like experiencing it day to day. While the big-move-moments can sometimes feel overwhelming, it’s the quiet surprises that have made England feel comforting and real — the benches tucked along footpaths, the sudden appearance of daffodils in spring, the sound of birds in the morning, and the feeling that everyday life here invites you to slow down and notice things. It’s also a glimpse into who Brett is — an Anglophile at heart who has always felt drawn to this country — and how those small moments are a big part of why we wanted this life for our daughters.Because in the end, our move wasn’t just about a place. It was about the kind of life we want our children to grow up in — one where the pace slows down enough to notice the little things.Sometimes those little things are exactly what make somewhere feel like home.Thank you for watching, we are so glad you are here!-Gemma & BrettJoin us on our website to keep up to date with all our goings on! How We’re Funding Our First Year in the UK (After Moving from the US)

Six months ago we moved our family from the United States to the United Kingdom — with two little girls, two dogs, and no jobs waiting for us when we arrived. So how are we actually paying for it?In this episode we’re sharing the financial strategy that made the move possible, how we prepared before leaving the US, and the plan we’re using to support our family during our first year living in the UK.Moving countries isn’t just plane tickets and suitcases. What's Changed? US to UK: 6 Months Later

Six months ago, we uprooted our entire lives and moved our family from the US to the UK.At first, everything felt overwhelming and unfamiliar. There were moments we genuinely wondered if we’d ever feel settled — or if this would always feel temporary. But slowly, something shifted. The routines formed (mostly). The logistics got sorted (for the most part). England has started to feel like ours. We stopped feeling like visitors. In this episode, we leave the living room behind and head out into the English countryside — navigating some truly wild weather and a few silly technical hiccups along the way. It’s a lighthearted catch-up set against some of our favourite views. We’re reflecting on what’s changed, what surprised us, what feels normal now, and where our focus is beginning to turn next.So what's different now?Six months in… here’s the honest answer. Thanks for watching!-Gemma & BrettJoin us on our website to keep up to date with all our goings on! Why We Love the NHS and Our American Health Insurance Experience

American health insurance is something we lived with for years, for Brett - his WHOLE life!In this episode, we break down:• What American health insurance actually is• How deductibles, copays, coinsurance, and out-of-pocket maximums really work• Whether it’s possible to avoid surprise medical bills• And why we are so grateful to be experiencing the NHS (National Health Service) We’re not here to bash either system. The United States has world-class medical care and innovation. But the financial structure behind it can be complex — and emotionally stressful — especially when you have children. After experiencing both systems as a US-UK family, we share what surprised us most.If you’ve ever wondered:Can you cap all medical costs in America? Why do surprise bills happen? How does it compare to the NHS?We’re diving into it!Important NoteThis episode reflects our lived experience navigating healthcare in both countries. Insurance policies vary widely by provider and state. Always check your specific plan details or consult a qualified professional for advice tailored to your situation. If this conversation resonates with you, let us know in the comments:What has your experience been with American health insurance or the NHS?Take care!-Gemma & BrettJoin us on our website to keep up to date with all our goings on! Why We Sold Our House, Our Cars, and Moved to the UK

America - We built our lives there. Built careers there. Our daughters were born there. Then we moved to England. Why? This is just our perspective — two parents trying to make the best decision we could with the information and circumstances we had at the time.Sometimes life shifts in ways you didn’t plan. And when it does, it forces you to revisit the questions you’d quietly parked. We weren’t running. We were reassessing. For us, it came down to one simple question:If we were going to reset anyway… where should we reset? We know nowhere's perfect. But for this chapter of our family, this move feels right. If you're navigating big decisions for your family, you’re not alone. Thanks for being on this journey with us!!-Gemma & BrettJoin us on our website to keep up to date with all our goings on! Our First Trip Back to the USA Since Moving Abroad

New Episodes EVERY Monday! We recently went back to America expecting nostalgia, homesickness, and a bit of uncertainty about our decision to move to England. Instead, we were surprised... Not by what we missed, but by how we felt. In this episode, we talk about the days leading up to the trip, what we thought revisiting our recent past might stir up, and the moment halfway through the week when our perspective quietly shifted. We were struck by just how big everything feels in the US (especially when driving), the cost of groceries, and—of course—the weather. We did everything we set out to do: Disney, the Orlando Science Center, performing comedy, and even a visit to our old house. And yet, through it all, something had changed. What we came away with was a simple but powerful realization: where you live matters less than the community you’re surrounded by. Stick around for Brett’s exclusive wedding reception dance moves, our thoughts on the latest series of The Traitors, and something about lipstick on a vicar’s teeth. We had a great time going back and experiencing the kind of week we once imagined before THE BIG MOVE — and this episode captures the moments where we realized why coming back to England felt like coming home!We are glad you're here!-Gemma & BrettYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@HowGreatIsBritainWebsite: www.HowGreatisBritain.com Podcast: https://pod.link/1865420238?view=apps&sort=popularity #expatlife #movingabroad #HomeIsWhereTheHeartIs #BackToTheUS #EnglandLife #FamilyAdventures #TravelReflections #LifeAbroad #ExpatsInEngland #CultureShock #ThemeParkFun #OrlandoAdventures #ParentingAbroad #LifeLessons #CommunityMatters #UKvsUSA #ExpatsJourney #FamilyVlog #PodcastEpisode #LifeReflections #TravelThoughts

    Our First British Christmas

New Episodes EVERY Monday! It's our first family Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and Boxing Day in the UK — and honestly, what an amazing experience! We left our food shopping until very nearly the last minute- only to be pleasantly surprised by Aldi- fully stocked and shockingly affordable (the true Christmas miracle may, in fact, be their vegetable prices). Aldi, if you’re listening, we’re open to sponsorship… and possibly even a name change.Christmas Eve was a bit of everything: baking cookies for Santa, getting dressed up for a church service (our first ever together), and possibly—accidentally—starting a brand new family tradition by ending the night with milkshakes and fast-food burgers. And of course one early present to open before bed!Christmas Day itself was peak cosy. Cold winter walks, gifts from Father Christmas, homemade egg nog, far more Christmas cards than we’re used to, an impressive amount of chocolate, the King’s Speech, and falling asleep to one of our all-time favourite Christmas films.Boxing Day slowed everything right down — pyjamas all day, nibbles for dinner (pigs in blankets, scotch eggs, pineapple and cheese… yes please), and absolutely nowhere to be.We wrap up the episode by bravely discussing Love Actually, fully aware this may divide the comment section (as it does us). This year has been hectic, emotional, exhausting, and incredibly meaningful. Celebrating the Small Wins

New Episodes EVERY Monday! As the year comes to a close, we wanted to pause for a moment and take stock of how far we’ve come — not just where we are now, but everything it took to get here.Making an international move while raising two young girls and two dogs has felt like living in the "sticky middle" of where we were and where we hope to be.During this time of moving and settling, there’s always another decision to be made and another thing that needs doing. And while it’s easy to focus on the stress, we’re not always great at stopping to notice the wins — especially the small ones; like finding a vet for the dogs, finding your local supermarket, or knowing where to get that thing we need...then realising these are actually us building a life here! This week’s episode is a little shorter, a little softer, and very much about perspective. We have some laughs, make a plea for egg nog, and what's that about a single bed?! We also share some truly wonderful fan art given to us by a member of our Youtube community, and we are incredibly touched to share a special performance of a classic Christmas carol from the Torrington Silver Band made just for How Great Is Britain - Can you guess this American version? As everything feels hectic at the end of the year, we hope this episode is a reminder — for us and for you — that even when you’re still in the middle of it all, progress is happening - life is happening - it all just takes time. Sometimes you just have to stop long enough to see it.Merry Christmas from our family to yours!Gemma & Brett🌍 Visit www.HowGreatIsBritain.com for updates, resources, and behind-the-scenes content.📺 Watch the full episode on YouTube:https://www.youtube.com/@HowGreatIsBritain#EndOfYearReflection #LifeUpdate #FamilyJourney #Gratitude #SmallWins #MovingAbroad #ExpatFamily #ParentLife #ChristmasEpisode

Christmas Nostalgia in the USA & UK

New Episodes EVERY Monday! This week, we’re sitting down for a cosy chat about Christmas — and realising that even though we both thought we grew up celebrating like everyone else, it turns out our childhood Christmas experiences could be quite different. From subtle British Christmas lights to full-blown American neighbourhood light fights, stockings on the bed versus stockings on the fireplace, nativity plays and Christmas pudding versus holiday concerts and gingerbread houses, we’re comparing what Christmas looked like growing up on opposite sides of the Atlantic. We talk about the traditions that shaped us, the things that surprised us when we experienced Christmas in the other country (Italian food?!), and how we’re now blending British and American Christmases for our girls. Food, decorations, school memories, family quirks — we've got it all right here!Let us know in the comments: what Christmas traditions did you grow up with, and are you blending more than one culture in your celebrations? Our Top 5 Christmas Songs

New Episodes EVERY Monday! We’re back for Part 2 of our Christmas music extravaganza! This time we’re diving into our personal Top 5 Christmas songs, exploring why certain tracks stick with us, and discovering that we each look for something completely different in our festive favourites. Gemma gravitates toward the upbeat, classic British hits she grew up with, while Brett leans into the wintery, reflective songs that made Christmas feel magical as a kid. Before we get into our lists, Gemma and I share a genuinely heartfelt message for anyone who might be finding this time of year difficult. We understand and we are with you. We hope to bring even a little comfort and connection through our little videos. We then start with a quick recap of the UK and US Top 5 charts from the last episode. UK v USA: Who Has the BEST Christmas Songs?

New Episodes EVERY Monday! It’s officially December, which means the stockings have been hung, the festive pyjamas are on, and we’re kicking off a whole month of holiday themed episodes! This week, we’re diving into one of our favourite parts of the season: Christmas music. We begin by talking about how important it was to get all of our Christmas decorations safely over from America, and then swap stories about the songs that shaped our childhood holidays — including the mysterious Christmas track Brett absolutely hated when he was eight but still can’t explain why. (Spoiler: we think we finally get to the bottom of it.)Brett also breaks down his three categories he believes every Christmas song falls into, and we tackle the age-old question of whether Die Hard is actually a Christmas movie. (Don’t get too wild in the comments.)Then it’s dashing through the snow as we go head-to-head in not one but TWO Christmas quizzes: Brett tests Gemma on the UK’s biggest Christmas songs, and Gemma challenges Brett with the most popular American holiday hits. Things get competitive, nostalgic, and opinions fly like tiny reindeer. We wrap Part 1 right after the quizzes, and in part 2 we’ll be revealing our personal Top 5 Christmas songs, along with a few surprises we’ve been saving.Crank up the record player, deck your halls, and get ready to jingle those bells -IT’S CHRIIIIIIIISTMAS!🌍 Visit www.HowGreatIsBritain.com for updates, resources, and behind-the-scenes content.📺 Watch the full episode on YouTube:https://www.youtube.com/@HowGreatIsBritain#ChristmasSongs #UKChristmas #AmericanInUK #ExpatLife #LifeInTheUK #MovingToTheUK #ChristmasMusic #UKvsUSA #BritishChristmas #ChristmasVibes #FestiveSeason #HolidaySpecial #Christmas2025 #TopChristmasSongs #UKYouTubers #DecemberVlog

And in true British-cottage fashion, Brett continues his ongoing battle with doorframes built several centuries before tall Americans existed. We also touch on Gemma’s birthday celebrations and reflect on how this trip felt like the perfect reset. Our First Impression of England

Now that we’ve been in the UK just over two months, we’re finally settling in enough to share some real first impressions — the things that surprised us, delighted us, and made us rethink what “normal” even means. This week we talk about the beauty of the countryside and the way open spaces are woven into everyday life. It feels like everything is accessible here, from footpaths that cut across farmland to green spaces tucked between villages. We’re pretty sure the nationwide recycling culture plays a big role in how clean and cared-for everything feels, too.We also dive into how small so many buildings are compared to the US, how nothing gets torn down just because it’s old, and the strange-but-lovely contrast of narrow homes surrounded by endless fields. Add in the sense of community — pubs, cafés, tiny bars, and parks that seem purposely built for talking to actual humans — and it’s been genuinely refreshing.Representation and inclusion keep surprising us as well, especially in media and public life — it's interesting to notice how the UK does it differently. We wrap things up with our favourite British superpower: saying something negative in the most positive way imaginable. It’s not what you say… it’s how you say it.We also chat about:How many things do you really have when you say “a couple”?Can Americans get away with saying “quid”?What can you learn about a whole culture from the children’s menu? And with Christmas just around the corner, we’re getting excited for a festive month full of fun videos ahead. Finally, we've heard your recommendations and we are excited to pass those recommendations forward! Thanks for being here — and for letting us share what these first months have looked like from the inside.🎧 New episodes daily🌍 Visit www.HowGreatIsBritain.com for updates, resources, and behind-the-scenes content.📺 Watch the full episode on YouTube:https://www.youtube.com/@HowGreatIsBritain #UKLife #LivingInTheUK #ExpatLifeUK #AmericansInUK #MovingToTheUK #BritishCountryside #UKCulture #BritishLife #UKTravel #DiscoverBritain #LifeInEngland #BritishChristmas #UKHolidays #CulturalDifferences #CommunityLife #SustainableLivingUK #RecyclingUK #CountrysideLiving #EnglandVlog #ExpatFamily #LifeAbroad

    The City of Bristol

🎧 New episodes Every MondayAfter a tough week in England, we finally started to find our rhythm—and Bristol was exactly what we needed. This week, we explore how the city helped us start to focus on something other than the stress of settling in and remember why we made this leap in the first place. From returning the rental car and wandering the streets on foot, to discovering castles, museums, comedy nights, and river walks, Bristol quickly showed us there’s always something to do—and so much to enjoy.Places we visited included M-Shed, the Bristol Old Vic, Cabot Circus, the Bristol Improv Theatre, Victoria Park, the Clifton Suspension Bridge, Blaise Castle, Freedog Soft Play, the Bristol Museum and Art Gallery, Bristol Central Library, Arnolfini Arts, and even a hidden farm right in the heart of the city (Windmill Hill City Farm)! There was still plenty of real life happening in the background (because moving abroad doesn’t pause for sightseeing), but Bristol gave us the chance to breathe, laugh, and just be in England for a bit.So how great is Bristol? Listen and find out!Take care,Gemma & Brett🌍 Visit www.HowGreatIsBritain.com for updates, resources, and behind-the-scenes content.📺 Watch the full episode on YouTube:https://www.youtube.com/@HowGreatIsBritain#BristolUK #MovingToEngland #ExpatLife #MovingAbroad #FromUSAtoUK #LifeInTheUK #UKTravel #VisitBristol #BritishLife #RelocationJourney #FamilyMoveUK #TravelEngland #ExpatJourney #InternationalMove #LifeAbroad

    Starting Over in the UK

🎧 New episodes Every MondayWhat happens after the excitement of moving abroad wears off? When there’s no car, no permanent home, and no clear sense of what comes next—what does starting over really feel like?In this episode, we share the most emotionally challenging week of our move from the USA to England. After less than a week in Deal, Kent, we leave the coast behind and travel to Bristol, ready to begin the next phase of our UK relocation. What we encounter there, however, is far more difficult—and far more honest—than we expected. This episode explores the emotional reality of moving to England, from culture shock and uncertainty to grief for the life we left behind. We talk openly about the quieter moments of an international move—the fear, the doubt, and the weight of rebuilding from scratch—balanced, as always, with humour, perspective, and two very large cups of tea.If you’re considering moving to England, relocating from the USA to the UK, or navigating expat family life, this episode offers a real, unfiltered look at what the transition can feel like once the adrenaline fades.Take care,Gemma & Brett🌍 Visit www.HowGreatIsBritain.com for updates, resources, and behind-the-scenes content.📺 Watch the full episode on YouTube:https://www.youtube.com/@HowGreatIsBritain#MovingToEngland#FromUSAtoUK#ExpatLife#MovingAbroad#LifeInTheUK#InternationalMove#RelocationJourney#BristolUK#FamilyMoveUK#ExpatJourney#CultureShock#LifeAbroad

But it wasn’t all work. From a magical day at Disney World to an Epic one at Universal, and one final surprise involving tea and dolls, we made space for lots of fun before our goodbye.Through it all, we couldn’t have done any of it without our incredible friends, who showed up again and again to help us finish strong and make sure we actually got on that plane in time.In this episode, we share:• The heartbreak of realizing your childhood is now considered “ancient history”• How Covid ended up affecting the sale of our car• The surprising fate of Brett’s pillows• And did we actually bribe people to come say goodbye to us?Take care,Gemma & BrettWebsite: www.HowGreatIsBritain.com📺 Watch the full video on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@HowGreatIsBritain#HowGreatIs #MovingAbroad #LeavingAmerica #MovingToEngland #ExpatLife #AmericanInUK #FamilyMoveUK #FromUSAtoUK #DogsMovingAbroad #LifeAbroad #ExpatFamily

    Goodbye to Our Family Home

🎧 New episodes Every MondayIt’s the last few days in our family home — and somehow everything is happening all at once. We wrapped up our final garage sale (where even a professional garage-saler wanted our “trash”), only to realize that our “timely” plans were anything but. Cue late nights cleaning until 4:30 a.m., frantic trips to the dump, and donation runs to clear out what was left behind. Then came the big moment: signing the paperwork to sell our house and emptying it out at the very last second — just as the new owner pulled into the driveway. Talk about timing. Now that the house is no longer ours, we’re trying to slow down and play tourists in our own town before our international move to the UK begins. But of course, there are still boxes to sort, forms to fill, and plenty of loose ends to tie up.In this episode of How Great is Britain, we share:• What to do when a professional garage-saler wants your trash• How tiny sunglasses let you get away with anything• The difference between moving internationally vs domestically• And how traumatic is it to throw out those plugs and wires you’ve been holding onto for a decade or moreSo join us as we wrap up one chapter, stumble into the next, and try to catch our breath along the way!Take care,Gemma & Brett📺 Watch the full video on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@HowGreatIsBritain#MovingAbroad #MovingToEngland #ExpatLife #InternationalMove #FamilyMoveUK #SellingOurHouse #MovingWithKids #ExpatFamily #LeavingTheUSA

Our Final Days in This House

🎧 New episodes Every MondayIt’s the final week before moving out of our home, and we’re knee-deep in piles of keep, donate, sell, and why-do-we-have-this-in-the-first-place? From predawn starts to 2 AM finishes, we’ve been hustling to clear out our possessions and memories and literally put them out to sea. And just to make things even more interesting, we accidentally packed our tea mugs—so we’re doing all this without our trusty cups of motivation! In this episode, we explore: • The chaos of sorting and downsizing in one final week • The shipping container surprise that threw our plans off • If a nursery rhyme makes for good hip hop • And what to do when doubt inevitably starts creeping in So pull up a seat (and a big mug—since we can’t), and join us for the latest chapter in this very full, very final week before the big move.
