His church was thriving, opportunities were multiplying, and by every outward measure, life was “on top.” But amid this success, his inner world was collapsing.After returning from a high-profile speaking event, Carey hit a wall:“It was like I fell off a cliff. I lost motivation, passion, and energy. I met all the symptoms of clinical depression. My body declared a finish line I had refused to acknowledge.”People around him saw the signs. He didn’t. And that’s often the story behind burnout—others notice the warning lights long before we do.Carey describes burnout as “the gap between what you’re capable of and what you’re carrying.” Early in ministry, he assumed that increasing responsibility meant increasing hours. It was an unsustainable equation.Yet today, two decades later, he leads a much larger platform with far more influence—without living exhausted. Why? Because he restructured his life around a biblical rhythm of rest, limits, and intentional focus.Managing Energy, Not Just TimeMany Christians feel that better time management will fix their overload. But as Carey points out, time is a fixed asset—everyone gets the same 24 hours. Energy, however, rises and falls.Every person has what Carey calls a “green zone”—a few hours each day when they are at their best mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. For him, it’s morning. For others, it might be midday or evening.His challenge is simple: Do what you’re best at when you’re at your best.When he writes in his green zone, he gets exponential results. When he tries the same work in his “red zone,” productivity crashes. This principle applies to everyone—from CEOs to parents, pastors, and business owners.Stewarding energy also requires boundaries. That means saying no—not out of selfishness, but out of faithfulness.Carey explains:Saying yes to every request eventually forces you to say no to the people who matter most.Delegation is a spiritual discipline.Some opportunities, even good ones, don’t align with God’s call in a particular season.By categorizing his decisions—like eliminating breakfast meetings that compete with his green zone—Carey reclaimed the margin he had been missing for years.Rest Is Not a Reward—It’s DesignFor many Christians, rest feels like something we “earn” after working ourselves to the edge. Revelation 2:8-9 This is the message from the one who is the First and the Last, who was dead but is now alive: “I know about your suffering and your poverty – but you are rich!” These words introduce the letter to the church in Smyrna. There was no surprise that the first letter went to Ephesus – it was viewed as the most influential of the cities. However, Smyrna was a close rival. It was a busy commercial centre with its own well-protected port. It had been founded long ago as a Greek colony, but in about 600BC it was largely destroyed by an invading army. Hundreds of years later, it was reconstructed, and it became a finely planned city with broad straight avenues and pavements. It was truly a city that had come back to life, so it was more than appropriate that they received a message from the Lord who had passed from death to life. The Lord’s message was that he totally understood where they were coming from. He knew just how much they had suffered and how grindingly poor they were. The word used for suffering describes someone who is crushed under a heavy weight. The word used here to describe their poverty does not refer to having nothing extra, but having nothing at all. They were in a bad way, but the risen Lord assured them that he knew all about it, and he also knew that they were rich. They might not have had riches in worldly terms, but they had real wealth: the Holy Spirit and the blessing of faith. We are continually bombarded with images of human riches. Advertisers have a very clear idea of what it means to be rich, and it has to do with the latest technology, fast cars, grand property, expensive holidays and the like. None of these things are necessarily bad, but they have nothing to do with real wealth. The treasures that last are the ones which only the Lord can give to us, and the Christians of Smyrna needed to look beyond their suffering and poverty to see and enjoy their real wealth. Question In what ways do you consider yourself to be rich? Prayer Loving God, thank you that you know my situation completely and that you show me how to be really rich. Amen

I want you to hear this from me rather than through the grapevine because you are part of my legacy. I've always encouraged people, as you know, to ask, what does this make possible? Well, 3 weeks ago, I thought I was an extraordinarily healthy 76-year-old guy. I eat a clean diet. I don't smoke. I don't drink. I exercise 5 times a week. On December 7, 2023, the doctors discovered I have very advanced pancreatic cancer that had already spread into my liver and into my bones and told me the prognosis is not good at all. Well, this gives me a unique opportunity to live out the principles I have taught all these years. Think about the way that I present life and how to approach things that are unexpected and unwelcome. I tell you to "never let your circumstances determine your attitude." I'm getting an opportunity now to test that out. Did I really believe those things, or was I just giving lip service to some kind of principles that I read in a book somewhere? My legacy is firmly embedded in people like you, people that I've had the privilege of interacting with in the past few years. You are my legacy. You are now the torchbearers of these principles that I borrowed from the previous great thinkers. Joanne and I have lived the life we loved for 55 years together. And we'd loved having the opportunity to inspire others to do the same. We have lived our dreams. I don't have a a bucket list of things I've not done. Anything Joanne and I wanted to do, we've done. I've loved creating new adventures, and now I'm anticipating an incredible spiritual transformation. Thank you for being who you are and for carrying a tiny flame from me to the many who you now have an opportunity to influence.
